“It’s all about a willingness to try new things, go new places and be surprised by what you find.”

Robert Chavez, the CEO at Hermès since 2000, enjoys working with customers. When he visits one of the Hermès boutiques, he prefers to blend in to the stores’ surroundings; helping shoppers find gifts for themselves or others.

That way, he’s better able to provide quick-response attention to their needs.

“The first thing I look for is the store’s ambience,” he says. “To me, the most important thing is a feeling of warmth and welcoming, and a staff that’s smiling when they’re greeting our clients. If that synergy’s there, I know everything else will be fine.”

Like the Greek God of Commerce that shares a name with the Hermès family and the Hermès brand, Chavez has that rare knack for melding the market’s demands with a constant supply of heavenly goods.

He won’t confirm rumors that vintage Hermès handbags are now selling at auction for as much as $500,000 apiece. Coyly, he doesn’t deny them either.

“The level of media interest in our products is always very high,” Chavez says modestly.

“For six generations, Hermès has earned and maintained a reputation for the highest quality materials and craftsmanship,” Chavez adds for emphasis. “It’s about word-of-mouth. It’s about loyalty. A woman with our Birkin bag or our Kelly bag feels good knowing she can pass it down to her daughter, or even her granddaughter, and it will still be stylish.”

Raised in San Antonio, TX and educated at Princeton, Chavez has a long, accomplished track record in the upscale retail realm.

He spent the late 1970s and early ‘80s as an Executive Trainer and Cosmetics and Home Furnishings buyer for Bloomingdale’s. Then came a five-year stint as a chief merchandiser for Macy’s. He spent most of the ‘90s reviving the Etienne Aigner brand as that company’s CEO.

No phase of the retail game escapes his scrutiny. Exclusivity, he insists, is the key to success and why Hermès intends to remain a family-owned label as opposed to one that’s mass-produced by a conglomerate.

“We have 27 stores in the U.S. and a website,” Chavez explains. “That’s definitely a limited stream of distribution. But it’s something we’re committed to because we don’t want to

be everywhere. Our customers appreciate that. We would not, nor could we supply every store across the country where our products are in demand.”

Sagely and earnestly, he’s led Hermès into key partnerships with entities that validate the brand – like the U.S. Equestrian team – and he’s devoted to charities like the March of Dimes, God’s Love We Deliver and the Luxury Education Foundation.

Hermès was among the first upscale retail tenants to commit to Buckhead Atlanta once it was embraced by the developers at San Diego-based OliverMcMillan.

Even when the construction cranes overhead the first Hermès boutique idled amid winds of doubt about the shopping mecca’s future, Chavez’s confidence in the local customer base and his shared vision with OliverMcMillan of a beautiful streetscape environment, never wavered.

“After all the trials and tribulations, we knew what I call ‘the temporary site’ was right for Hermès,” Chavez reasons. “That’s why we stuck it out. Over those five years while

Buckhead Atlanta was under development, we continued to do well. We established a client base that never stopped coming.”

“The only surprise since we opened at Buckhead Atlanta is the amount of traffic we’ve had,” he says.

“We have a healthy and loyal clientele locally. Going forward, I think this store will draw a broader base both regionally and internationally.”

Hermès is a big part of the heart of Buckhead Atlanta and the location offers much more than handbags and hospitality.

“Now that we’re in a much larger space, we’re able to expand our product mix,” says Chavez. “Before, we didn’t have the space to showcase items like the Hermès bicycle or our home category. Now that we can show more shoes, more silks, more jewelry and so on, the clients are responding positively.”

“My passion is traveling,” Chavez says. “Discovering new places and cultures and languages. I find that very inspiring.”

Every season, Hermès adopts a new comprehensive theme. Fittingly, Chavez says, the theme for spring 2015 is the French concept, Flaneurie.

“It basically means wandering, exploring, discovering, taking walks down different paths not knowing where they’ll lead,” he explains.

“It’s all about a willingness to try new things, go to new places and be surprised by what you find.”

Chavez has lofty expectations for success at Buckhead Atlanta in coming years. But, when asked what item will be featured to entice new shoppers and excite faithful ones this spring, he refers to the most simplistic item among a vast array of fanciful ones.

“The actual stunner is our silk scarf for spring,” Chavez says. “It’s bright, it’s colorful and its patterns are vibrant. It’s what, I think, our Atlanta clients want and need.”

“Surround yourself with the things you love. Discard the rest.” – Unknown

Delightfully distinctive in its scope, Jonathan Adler first made its debut in 1994 with a ceramic collection at Barney’s New York. Since then, the brand has grown to comprise home furnishings, home décor, lighting,

textiles, rugs, decorative pillows, art and more. Jonathan Adler invites its clients to “build a timelessly chic foundation, then accessorize with abandon.” Inspired by mid-century modern art and pop culture, it’s

no wonder that this design company that touts “style, craft and joy” has locations on Madison Avenue in New York, near the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, and on Melrose Avenue in

Los Angeles. We are proud to add the iconic Peachtree Road in Atlanta to that list, as Buckhead Atlanta serves as Jonathan Adler’s newest location. jonathanadler.com

he day starts at 6 a.m., before dawn on a crisp November day in Atlanta. Laspata DeCaro, a New York-based creative agency known for storytelling with its high fashion photographs and branding campaigns, has been in Atlanta for several days, getting ready for the

multi-location shoot at several locations in Atlanta. Throughout their nearly 30 year career, Rocco Laspata and Charles DeCaro have had

the privilege of working with virtually every world-renowned model as well as bold-faced personalities including Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julianne Moore, Faith Hill and Janet Jackson. Their award winning work has graced the pages of international fashion and lifestyle publications. The two work as a team and function as co-creative directors. Rocco is the photographer while Charles art directs at his computer screen, which is part of a high-tech set up on each shoot. “We’re seeing the same thing simultaneously…Rocco through the lens and me at the computer,” says Charles. “In this digital age, you have the benefit of seeing in real time that your aesthetic for a campaign is realized.” Rocco adds, “The visual narrative and consumer connectivity are crucial components in our branding strategy. For this shoot we knew

in advance we wanted to capture Atlanta and the nuances that are important to the city: the parks, the Aquarium, the homes, the school children, and express the glamour of a couple exploring this world-class metropolis. It’s beyond gratifying when the resulting imagery communicates the intended dynamic.”

“We love working with friends who share our creative vision,” said Hillary Crowe, Chief Culture Officer of OliverMcMillan. “Rocco and Charles have worked on several of our developments. We chose them

for their extraordinary fashion portfolio, and over the years we have appreciated their work and the artistic touch that they bring to each photograph.”

Mary Kathryn Wells, Director of Marketing for Buckhead Atlanta, adds that many of the retailers at Buckhead Atlanta have worked with Laspata DeCaro. “They trust Charles and Rocco, and it is exciting for them to participate in a photo shoot of this nature for that reason,” she said. “Our retailers are all very protective of their brands – the models, clothes and locations – and want to make sure the photographs that we produce for Buckhead Atlanta are up to the standards of their brands.”

Wells adds, “The looks we photographed are in high demand. Some of our clothes came from Europe and didn’t arrive until the day of the shoot.”

SWAN HOUSEA close-by neighbor of Buckhead Atlanta, Swan House, is the first location of the day. Architect Philip Trammell Shutze designed the Swan House for Edward Inman and his wife Emily in 1924, adapting Italian and English classical styles. After Mrs. Inman’s death in 1966, the Atlanta Historical Society purchased the house, furnishings and 28-acre estate, and opened it to the public.

The team has to be out of the house by 11 a.m., when it opens to visitors. While the crew works on a shot in a side garden where Autumn leaves are swept from the bushes, retired Delta pilot Richard Fonda drives up to the front of the house in his 1955 MG TF and model Viktoriya Sasonkina is then styled in a retro look to show off Christian Louboutin heels. The vision is stunning.

PACE ACADEMYThe team packs up and travels a short distance to Pace Academy, a college preparatory school about a mile from Buckhead Atlanta. Pace Academy, which opened in 1958, has 1,085 students, says Caitlin Jones, Director of Communications. She and Headmaster, Fred Assaf and Kris Palmerton, Director of Athletics, join the crew on the upper football field. As the Laspata DeCaro lighting team sets up for a stadium lighting effect, Lindsay Lewis, owner of L Two Productions, the Atlanta-based company in charge of local logistics, goes out on the field to prepare the cheerleaders for the shot.

“The girls are so excited for this afternoon. They work so hard and this is a wonderful treat for them,” says Headmaster Assaf. “We are proud of our students and this is a fun way to represent Pace in the community.”

“We love working with friends who share our creative vision.”

THE MODELS

THE GEORGIA AQUARIUMThe next day begins at the Georgia Aquarium with shoots in the in-credible Oceans Ballroom and Ocean Voyager exhibit. The Georgia Aquarium houses more than 100,000 sea creatures, representing 500 species, all of which reside in 10 million gallons of marine and fresh water. It is the second largest aquarium in the world.

“The ambiance is spectacular.” says Rocco. “We were all mesmerized by the majesty of the location.”

ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDENIt is lightly raining when the crew arrives to gather in the Atlanta Bo-tanical Garden’s Mershon Hall, but by the time the shot is set up, the sun is out and everyone moves out to the Japanese Garden, a lovely, meditative place, with a wrought-iron table covered with greenery and roses with the dozens of lit diptyque rose candles diffusing a sweet scent. Model Viktoriya sits behind the table looking like a goddess. “There are those magical moments when the fantasy in your head becomes a reality.” says Charles.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden fosters appreciation, understanding and stewardship of plants and nature. It is a living museum featuring exhibits and cultural events such as Art in the Garden, Fuqua Conservatory, Children’s Gardens, Fuqua Orchid Center and Concerts in the Garden.

LE BILBOUQUETThe shoot is almost over when late in the day, the crew arrives at Le Bilboquet, the open-air bistro that is a centerpiece of Buckhead Atlanta. When all is ready, the models, both dressed in items from Scoop NYC, settle at a table inside the restaurant where the authentic French bistro ambiance combined with the glamorous models creates an image of romance and sophistication depicting an evening spent at Buckhead Atlanta.

The day ends as Buckhead Atlanta fills with visitors meeting friends and family for a memorable evening at Buckhead Atlanta.

“There are those magical moments when the fantasy...becomes a reality.” VIKTORIYA SASONKINA

When asked what it’s like to see herself on larger-than-life graph-ics at Buckhead Atlanta, Viktoriya answers, “My first thought was I need to take a picture of it and send it to my grandmother in Odessa.”

RYAN COOPER

At the time of the shoot, Ryan was also in the midst of filming the first episodes of MTV’s murder-mystery Eye Candy, noting that he did not know yet if his character is innocent. When asked if he would mind if he turns out to be a murderer in the series, he says, “Oh, I hope so!

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN BEAUTÉ

The story began with a stroke of red nail colour applied to the sole of a shoe, and the legend continues

with the introduction of nail lacquer. Et voila! The signature Rouge Louboutin was born.

Following on the heels of the Rouge Louboutin, there are 30 additional colours, all inspired by iconic Louboutin shoes and

grouped in three families of 10: The Pops (shown here), The Noirs and The Nudes. To showcase these groups, it was important to

highlight and differentiate them with a design accent...

THE POPS: Nothing allowed the bright colours to stand out more than the silver cap.

THE NOIRS: Made up of blacks, intense blues, dark browns and greens, Christian chose a gunmetal cap to best showcase

these deep tones.

THE NUDES: Named after a recent capsule collection of the same name, the rose gold cap emphasises

the varying nude tones. From vanillas to chocolates to soft pinks and khakis.

PACE ACADEMY a global education for every graduate

Pace Academy’s Isdell Center for Global Leadership creates prepared, confident citizens of the world.

Oh, the Places They’ll Go

This year, Pace Academy’s Isdell Center for Global Leadership has or will offer study tours to Japan, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Germany, New York City, Patagonia, China, Romania, Italy, Spain, France, India, Cambridge, Botswana, Namibia, Greece, Dominican Republic, Australia and Costa Rica.Learn more about the ICGL at paceacademy.org/icgl

hen Pace Academy students returned to school this past fall, they faced a fun and formidable task: understanding water.

The endeavor is part of the Buckhead school’s Isdell Center for Global Leadership (ICGL), a program launched in August 2014 that supports and enhances Pace Academy’s mission to create prepared, confident citizens of the world.

“In implementing the ICGL, our goal was to remain at the forefront of teaching and learning, and to develop young men and women who not only have a deep understanding of the world and the people around them, but who also want to be successful while making a positive difference,” says Pace Academy Headmaster Fred Assaf.

Therefore, from the time a student enters Pace Academy’s doors until graduation, all educational experiences are viewed through an overarching global lens. The ICGL fosters this culture of global learning and leadership by exploring an annual global theme. Education around themes is supported in Pace Academy’s Lower, Middle and Upper Schools by curricular, co-curricular and hands-on activities, as well as a scholar-in-residence program, leadership fellowships, internships and study tours.

The inaugural theme is water.

The ICGL leadership team selected as its first visiting scholar Charles Fishman. An award-winning journalist and author of The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water and New York Times bestseller The Wal-Mart Effect, Fishman spent a week on the Pace Academy campus in September.

From early morning meetings to dinnertime discussions, Fishman talked solely about “the most familiar substance in our lives,” encouraging all those with whom he spoke to consider the important role water plays in their day-to-day existence.

His visit kicked off the water conversation and, since then, students and faculty have heard from guest speakers, raised funds for water relief organizations, participated in water fun days, written essays regarding pertinent issues, explored solutions to water problems, and generally increased their knowledge and awareness of the important subject.

During his time in Atlanta, Fishman also met with Pace Academy’s first class of Global Leaders, four students who, after a competitive application process, were selected to spend the school year exploring water through travel, research and customized learning experiences.

In the fall, these Global Leaders, and three faculty advisors, hit the road – or, rather, the river – to explore the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola rivers in Georgia and Florida in an attempt to understand the decades-old water wars between Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

In March, the group traveled to the Rio Bravo del Norte in Mexico, and they’ll explore Southern Africa’s Okavango River Delta over the summer.

“Water issues seem really complicated,” says Global Leader Sarah Lettes, a senior, “but most people we’ve spoken to believe that physical limitations aren’t the biggest obstacle in solving the water problems, but rather a lack of conversation. Everyone – from dam and mill operators to oyster harvesters – has strong reasons to need water and wants to have a real, productive conversation.”

And that productive conversation, Pace Academy’s leaders say, is the point.

“As the world becomes increasingly complex and interconnected, we want to make sure we provide students with meaningful opportunities to explore the connection between learning and life in the wider world,” says ICGL Director Trish Anderson.

With the Kentucky Derby approaching, Czaplicki is offering her own take on the Mint Julep, called the Blackjack. It features coffee bean-and vanilla-infused bourbon, muddled fresh mint and simple syrup. Fourteen beers are available on tap, and a larger format beer program is expected to launch soon.

DORAKU SUSHIAn izakaya or Japanese gastropub, Doraku offers both traditional and fusion dishes. There’s sushi and sake, as well as teriyaki and tempura options. Menu items include pan-seared sesame citrus tuna, yaki soba noodle stir-fry, steamed mussels, and Asian ribeye. There’s traditional miso soup and seaweed salad, salmon carpaccio, rainbow rolls and tuna avocado tartare, too.

Don’t hesitate to order a cocktail at the bar. There are plenty of fruity options that fit well with the nice weather. Enjoy a strawberry Asian Mojito, a Mango Jalapeno Martini, or an Asian Pear Sake-tini.

GYPSY KITCHENA see-and-be-seen hotspot, Gypsy Kitchen combines a whimsical atmosphere with Spanish and Moroccan influences. The eats are designed to be shared. There’s boquerones, garlic shrimp, and lamb kefta tagine, to name a few.

But the real highlight is the drinks. Designed by bar manager Michael Searles, the Seville Rose stands out for its mix of vodka, roses, egg white, lemon and soda. Made with small batch Mississippi vodka, it contains hints of ginger, rose petals and candied lemon zest.

pring Awakening

It’s not just bears that hibernate. Every year when springtime hits, Atlantans come out in droves. Whether it’s the warm air, the flowers blooming or the allure of seasonal delicacies fresh from the farm, spring means a busy time for local restaurants. Here’s what you can look forward to at Buckhead Atlanta restaurants this season.

LE BILBOQUETThis French bistro – located smack in the center of Buckhead Atlanta – stems from New York City’s Upper East Side, where it first opened in 1986. (The New York outpost moved to Midtown Manhattan in 2013.) General Manager Jon Skinner oversees the Atlanta location, along with Maître d’ Ilona Knopfler, who brings French heritage and 25 years of international hospitality experience to the restaurant.

Le Bilboquet’s signature dishes are perfect for springtime. Lighter options include steamed mussels in white wine sauce, crab meat and avocado salad, tuna tartare and halibut Riviera. Enjoy them with a cocktail or glass of wine as you watch the passersby.

QING MUWith the tagline “Use Your Noodle,” Qing Mu is a Chinese noodle shop that allows diners to customize their meals. The focus is handmade noodles served in soup, and diners can add in vegetables, meat, chicken, seafood, tofu and/or duck. You choose the level of spice, and wontons, dumplings and salad are available on the side.

Don’t know what to order? The signature dish, the Qing Mu noodle, is comprised of ramen, Qing Mu original broth, pork belly char siu, thinly sliced beef, hot spring egg, bok choy and bean sprouts. Five other pre-designed selections are available, too.

THE SOUTHERN GENTLEMANA gastropub, The Southern Gentleman has a more staid design with large leather booths and white marble countertops. The menu offers snacks like deviled eggs and pimento cheese gougeres, as well as a culotte steak and a burger with pork and bacon-bourbon jam.

When guests want something lighter, executive chef Randy Lewis recommends the sunflower salad. He utilizes every part of the sunflower, from the petals and heart to the sprouts and oil. He even uses local honey to candy the seeds, and then tosses it all in a nutty brown butter vinaigrette.

THIRTEEN PIESAs the name suggests, this Texas-born pizza joint offers just over a dozen pies daily. There’s garlic and sage white, lardo red (with Calabrian chili!) and Parma prosciutto, among others. There’s no telling what the special 13th pie will be on any given day, but if you’re looking for something seasonal, look no further than the pasta special. At the height of English pea season, Thirteen Pies is offering pan-fried potato gnocchi with English pea puree and pea tendrils. Like all of the pastas, the gnocchi is made in-house.

Looking to lighten things up as bathing suit season approaches? Thirteen Pies offers an assortment of salads, ranging from shaved vegetable and apple to the Georgia Bibb with goat cheese and red wine vinaigrette.

hake Shack CEO Randy Garutti’s favorite phrase is “whoever wrote the rule that…” It’s one he and Union Square Hospitality founder Danny Meyer used when creating the original Shake Shack – a hot dog cart in New York City’s Madison Square Park. The duo realized that there was no rule that said they couldn’t

use all-natural, hormone- and antibiotic-free beef at a park-side shack, and the industry was changed forever.

Back then, Garutti was Chief Operating Officer of Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG). Madison Square Park had fallen into disrepair, and a local artist was putting together an exhibit to raise money for it. Since USHG owned two restaurants nearby, the artist asked Garutti and Meyer to create a hot dog cart to benefit the park.

“For three years we made the food in our fancy French kitchen [at Eleven Madison Park] and every penny went to the park,” Garutti says. “After that, the city asked if we wanted to run a full-time kiosk there. That was the birth of Shake Shack.”

Today, there are more than sixty Shake Shack locations worldwide, and Garutti, who got his start at a New Jersey bagel shop at age 13, is in

charge of them all. He has a degree from Cornell University, he worked in Aspen, Maui and Seattle, and managed Tabla and Union Square Cafe, but it’s the USHG culture and mindset that he says keeps employees the happiest. “We teach the technical skills but hire for the emotional skills,” he says. “We have fun training. We call it leadership development. Our goal is to graduate people to different jobs.”

When he’s not traveling to Shake Shack openings, Garutti resides in New York with his wife and three young children. He eats at Shake Shack about once a week—the SmokeShack bacon burger is his favorite.

He balances all those burgers with frequent bike rides and enjoys practicing Bikram yoga. When he’s not working or exercising, he’s coaching his children’s Little League teams.

At the office, Garutti spends his time strategizing growth opportunities and sharing values and expectations with his team. “The bigger we get, the smaller we need to act,” he says, adding that the focus of the Atlanta team is making the Shake Shack there the best mirror of the Buckhead community possible.

Shake Shackspring menu items:Whether window shopping or enjoying the sun on the rooftop patio, Shake Shack offers seasonal frozen custards to satisfy your sweet tooth. Flavors include strawberry cheesecake in May and strawberry almond and cherry streusel in June. These rich and creamy desserts are spun fresh daily and can be ordered in a cup or cone, spun into a milkshake or blended into a concrete with other mix-ins.

To that end, Shake Shack has created a large rooftop deck to take advantage of Atlanta’s fair weather, and specifically chose the Buckhead Atlanta location because “being on Peachtree Road is the iconic place to be,” Garutti says.

The Atlanta menu features local specialties like the caramel-peach Peachtree shake, and two “concretes” (frozen custard with premium mix-ins) use local products – one even has an entire slice of Holeman & Finch pecan pie!

“We’ve been blown away at the response Atlanta fans have had,” he says.

When asked if there are other Atlanta locations in Shake Shack’s future, Garutti is tight-lipped. “Right now we’re concentrating on one burger at a time in Buckhead,” he says. Carly Cooper

Hungry for more? Shake Shack offers all-natural Angus beef burgers and hot dogs, crinkle cut fries and even a couple of treats for pups.

For those ages 21 and up, there’s beer and wine, too.
