FR La musique pour tous. Voilà ce qu’était le principe des « Concerts populaires » fondés à Bruxelles afin d’offrir l’accès à la musique classique à un large public. Nous célébrons cette année le 150e anniversaire de cette initiative unique, qui ne naquit pas en ville par hasard. C’est la raison pour laquelle l’« Urban Vibes », tel un fil rouge, traverse notre programmation.

De nombreux compositeurs s’inspirèrent de la frénésie de la vie urbaine. Comment dissocier Telemann et le Hambourg du XVIIIe siècle ? Haydn partit pour Londres une première fois en 1791 et Dvořák, Rachmaninov et Bartók s’installèrent à New York. Cette saison, nous aurons l’occasion d’entendre à BOZAR l’une des symphonies londoniennes de Haydn et la Symphonie du Nouveau Monde de Dvořák. An American in Paris de Gershwin et City Noir de John Adams présentent également des liens forts avec la ville.

À Bruxelles, des œuvres de Stravinsky et de Prokofiev furent créées au Palais des Beaux-Arts. Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov et Grieg vinrent spécialement pour les « Concerts populaires », initiative du compositeur belge Adolphe Samuel qui voulait faire connaître la musique classique au public le plus large possible. La classe moyenne urbaine ouvrit la voie avant d’être suivie par de larges couches de la population.

Après l’étape intermédiaire de la Société philharmonique, les « Concerts populaires » sont aujourd’hui devenus BOZAR MUSIC. Le département musique de BOZAR, dans un souci constant d’accessibilité et d’ouverture, a non seulement vu son public s’enrichir et se diversifier, mais également sa programmation s’élargir. Au cours des décennies, les possibilités de choix et de combinaisons n’ont cessé d’augmenter. En feuilletant cette brochure, vous constaterez très vite qu’il y en a pour tous les goûts, et que ce n’est pas un vain mot.

Les formules d’abonnement sont de deux types : l’abonnement permanent et l’abonnement saisonnier. Dans la première catégorie, vous trouverez les valeurs sûres, comme « Orchestres internationaux », « Baroque de poche » ou « Récitals au Palais ». Une vingtaine de catégories proposées depuis de nombreuses années, opportunément classées par genre et par effectif.

Le second groupe consiste en abonnements dont nous modifions le contenu chaque saison, notamment en fonction des thèmes annuels. Cette saison, notre thème central est « Urban Vibes ». Nous proposons également « Bach Heritage », un tout nouvel abonnement thématique qui trace l’influence de Bach sur les compositeurs des générations suivantes. Ce festival est placé entre les mains expertes de Philippe Herreweghe, l’un de nos cinq artistes en résidence, tout comme le Quatuor Ébène, Elisabeth Leonskaya, Valer Sabadus et Sol Gabetta, que nous mettons à l’honneur avec un « portrait ».

NL Muziek voor iedereen. Dat was 150 jaar geleden het uitgangspunt van de ‘concerts populaires’ die in Brussel werden opgericht zodat een breed publiek van klassieke muziek kon genieten. We vieren dit seizoen de 150e verjaardag van dit unieke initiatief, dat niet toevallig in de stad ontstond. Vandaar dat Urban Vibes als rode draad door onze programmering lopen.

Het bruisende stadsleven was voor talloze componisten een inspiratiebron. Telemann kan je niet los denken van het 18e-eeuwse Hamburg. Haydn trok in 1791 voor een eerste keer naar Londen en Dvořák, Rachmaninov en Bartók verhuisden naar New York. Dit seizoen hoor je bij BOZAR een van Haydns Londense symfonieën en Dvořáks symfonie Uit de Nieuwe Wereld. Ook Gershwins An American in Paris of City Noir van John Adams verwijzen duidelijk naar de stad.

In Brussel gingen werken van Stravinski en Prokofjev in première in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten. Strauss, Rimski-Korsakov en Grieg kwamen speciaal langs voor de ‘concerts populaires’. Die concerten waren een initiatief van de Belgische componist Adolphe Samuel. Hij wilde een zo groot mogelijk publiek vertrouwd maken met klassieke muziek. De stedelijke middenklasse baande de weg en brede lagen van de bevolking volgden.

De ‘concerts populaires’ ontpopten zich, via een tussenstap als de Filharmonische Vereniging, tot BOZAR MUSIC. De muziekafdeling

van BOZAR zit nog altijd op de lijn van meer toegankelijkheid en openheid. Niet alleen het publiek werd talrijker en kleurrijker, ook de programmering werd breder. De evolutie van onze abonnementen en formules weerspiegelt de verbreding van zowel het muziekaanbod als het publiek. De afgelopen decennia namen de keuze- en combinatiemogelijkheden toe. Als je door dit boekje bladert, is het snel duidelijk dat ‘voor elk wat wils’ bij ons geen holle frase is.

We delen de abonnementformules op in twee grote groepen: de permanente en de seizoensabonnementen. In die eerste categorie vind je de vaste waarden, zoals de ‘wereldorkesten’, ‘barok in zakformaat’ en de ‘recitals in het Paleis’. Op die manier zijn er al vele jaren een twintigtal vertrouwde categorieën, zinnige opdelingen volgens genre en bezetting. De tweede groep bestaat uit abonnementen die we elk seizoen anders invullen. Het zijn formules met jaarthema’s. Deze editie is er uiteraard Urban Vibes, het centrale thema van het seizoen. We stellen je ook Bach Heritage voor. Dit gloednieuwe thema-abonnement gaat de invloed na van Bach op latere componisten. Philippe Herreweghe leidt het festival in goede banen. Hij is een van onze vijf artiesten in residentie. Ook het Quatuor Ebène, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Valer Sabadus en Sol Gabetta zijn kunstenaars die we dit jaar met een ‘portret’ in de kijker zetten.

EN Music for everyone: 150 years ago, that was the thinking behind the “concerts populaires” launched in Brussels to make it possible for a broad public to enjoy classical music. This season, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of that magnificent project. It was not by chance that such an initiative saw the light of day in the city. Hence, the choice of “Urban Vibes” as the thread running right through our programming for this season.

The bustle of city life has been a source of inspiration for innumerable composers. Telemann cannot be imagined without 18th-century Hamburg. Haydn travelled to London for the first time in 179;

Dvořák, Rakhmaninov, and Bartók moved to New York. This season, BOZAR offers you an opportunity to hear one of Haydn’s “London” symphonies, as well as Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. Gershwin’s An American in Paris and City Noir by John Adams also clearly have links to the city.

In Brussels, works by Stravinsky and Prokofiev were premiered at the Centre for Fine Arts, while Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Grieg made special visits for the “concerts populaires”. The concerts were the brainchild of the Belgian composer Adolphe Samuel, who wanted to familiarise as broad a public as possible with classical music. The urban middle class led the way and broad sections of the population followed.

After some years as the Philharmonic Society, the “concerts populaires” turned into today’s BOZAR MUSIC, the Music Department of BOZAR, which still upholds the principles of increasing accessibility and openness. Not only have audiences become more numerous and more varied, but our programming has also become broader. The evolution of our subscription series and formulas reflects the broadening of both the public and the range of music on offer. The choices and combinations available have increased over recent decades. As you leaf through this booklet, you will soon realise that “something for everybody” is no empty boast.

We have divided the subscription formulas into two main categories: permanent subscriptions and those specific to the season. In the first category you will find old favourites such as “International orchestras”, “Pocket baroque”, and the “Recitals at the Palais”. In this category, there has been a score or so of subscription options over many years, arranged according to genre and line-up.

The second category is made up of subscriptions that vary from season to season; they reflect the themes of a particular season. This season, that includes “Urban Vibes”, the central theme of the season. We also present “Bach Heritage”, a brand new thematic subscription that explores Bach’s influence on later composers in a festival under the guidance of Philippe Herreweghe — who is also one of our five artists in residence. Each of the other four — the Quatuor Ebène, Elisabeth Leonskaya, Valer Sabadus, and Sol Gabetta — is also the subject of a special “portrait”.

FR Écouter la plus belle des musiques, tout près des interprètes, comme dans la salle de concert du Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles. Tant de grands artistes sont montés sur cette scène au cours de la riche histoire de ce monument protégé !

C’est en 1827 que le roi Guillaume Ier fonda l’école de musique. Cinq ans plus tard, cette institution francophone pour les musiciens, inspirée de l’exemple du Conservatoire de Paris, fut rebaptisée Conservatoire royal de musique. Elle fut ensuite divisée administrativement entre entités francophone et néerlandophone en 1967, mais les élèves et les professeurs continuèrent à partager les mêmes bâtiments. De très nombreux étudiants, originaires des quatre coins du monde, y apprennent leur métier. Et viennent y écouter leurs célèbres modèles. En collaboration avec le Conservatoire, BOZAR organise chaque année des master-classes exceptionnelles avec les plus grands artistes.

Bientôt, l’état déplorable du bâtiment historique ne sera plus qu’un mauvais souvenir. Les gouvernements fédéral, flamand et wallon sont parvenus à un accord sur le financement de la restauration. En attendant, continuez à profiter de notre programmation, servie par des musiciens talentueux !

NL Luisteren naar de mooiste muziek, dicht bij de uitvoerders. Dat kan nog altijd in de concertzaal van het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel. Talloze grote artiesten stonden er op het podium in de loop van de rijke geschiedenis van dit beschermde monument.

Koning Willem I was de oprichter van de

muziekschool in 1827. Vijf jaar later werd ze herdoopt tot Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium, een Franstalig opleidingsinstituut voor muzikanten, naar het voorbeeld van het Parijse Conservatorium. De instelling werd in 1967 administratief gesplitst in een Franstalige en Vlaamse afdeling, maar de studenten en professoren bleven dezelfde gebouwen delen. Talloze studenten, uit alle hoeken van de wereld, leren hier het metier. Zij komen uiteraard ook luisteren naar hun gerenommeerde voorbeelden. Samen met het Conservatorium organiseert BOZAR bovendien elk jaar unieke masterclasses met enkele van de grootste artiesten.

Aan de deplorabele toestand van het historische gebouw komt in de nabije toekomst een einde. De federale, Vlaamse en Franstalige overheden hebben een akkoord bereikt over de financiering van de restauratie. Ondertussen kan je van heel dichtbij blijven genieten van prachtige muziek, gespeeld door begaafde muzikanten.

King William I founded the music school in 1827. Five years later, it was renamed the Royal Music Conservatory, as a training institute for musicians, operating in French and inspired by the model of the Paris Conservatory. Although the institution was administratively divided in 1967 into French- and Dutch-speaking sections, the students and teachers continued to share the same buildings. A great many students, from every corner of the world, learn their trade here; they also come, of course, to listen to their renowned role models. In addition, every year, in cooperation with the Conservatory, BOZAR organises special masterclasses with some of the greatest artists.

The deplorable condition of this historic building is due to be rectified in the near future: the federal, Flemish, and French-speaking authorities have reached agreement on the funding of its restoration. In the meantime, you can continue to enjoy wonderful music, from close up, as played by outstanding musicians.

thèMES À BOZAR, les étoiles de demain sont à l’œuvre. Les jeunes musiciens du Quatuor Ébène et le contre-ténor Valer Sabadus débordent de talent. C’est avec joie que nous vous les présentons et que nous les mettons à l’honneur avec un portrait. Les piliers de la musique classique que sont Elisabeth Leonskaja, Philippe Herreweghe et Sol Gabetta sont chez nous comme à la maison. Un abonnement spécifique vous permet de suivre chacun de nos cinq artistes en résidence.

Nos abonnements de saison proposent également des formules spéciales basées sur des thèmes. Herreweghe prend la direction d’un tout nouveau festival, Bach Heritage, qui vous fait découvrir l’influence de Bach sur les générations suivantes. Un abonnement est centré sur la ville, la thématique centrale de la saison : Urban Vibes. De tout temps, les villes ont été une source inépuisable de créativité. thEMA’SBij BOZAR hoor je de sterren van morgen al aan het werk. De jonge muzikanten van het Quatuor Ebène en contratenor Valer Sabadus barsten van het talent. We laten je graag met hen kennismaken en plaatsen ze in de kijker met een portret. Ook gevestigde waarden van de klassieke muziek als Elisabeth Leonskaja, Philippe Herreweghe en Sol Gabetta zijn kind aan huis bij BOZAR. Je kan elk van onze vijf artiesten in residentie volgen met een abonnement.

Onze seizoensabonnementen bevatten ook speciale formules op basis van thema’s. Herreweghe neemt de leiding over een gloednieuw festival, Bach Heritage. Daarin ontdek je de invloed van Bach op componisten na hem. Ook rond de stad, de insteek van dit seizoen, presenteren we een abonnement onder de noemer Urban Vibes. Steden zijn altijd een onuitputtelijke bron van creativiteit geweest. Talloze componisten hebben de zinderende energie van de stad omgezet in prachtige werken. thEMESBOZAR lets you hear tomorrow’s stars — today. The extraordinarily talented young musicians of the Quatuor Ebène and the counter-tenor Valer Sabadus, for example. We are delighted to have the opportunity to introduce them to you in our special portraits. Leading lights of classical music such as Elisabeth Leonskaja, Philippe Herreweghe, and Sol Gabetta are, of course, already old friends of BOZAR’s. You can follow each of our five artists in residence via a subscription.

Our season subscription offers also include special formulas that focus on particular themes. Herreweghe takes on the leadership of a brand new festival, Bach Heritage, in which you can discover Bach’s influence on later composers. The city, the thread running right through this season, is the theme of another subscription, Urban Vibes. Cities have always been inexhaustible sources of creativity and innumerable composers have expressed the vibrant energy of the city in magnificent works. Over eight fascinating concerts, you can discover why cities like Vienna, Dresden, and St Petersburg are inextricably bound up with music.
