Editors NoteWhen (not) looking forward to temeratres in the 90s and 100s, I cant imagine why anyone wold willingly sbject themseles to schweather. I for one choose to send the majority of my mid-smmer days in locations with chilly air conditioner, great reading material andcool drinks. Or last isse contained lots of things to do otside, sch as golng and swimming, and this isse is decidedly the oosite. Iknow that most Oklahomans cant bear the thoght of een walking to their cars, so wee left the otdoors fn to some cooler months.

This isse is acked with heartwarming stories of strength and hoe, hilanthroy and commnity serice, een from some nlikelylaces. We hoe that this isse will encorage yo to go ot and sere the commnity in some way, whether it is by yor time or yormoney. Between the Waganer familys story, the hilanthroic missions of some of or faorite local casinos, Stff the Bs or Normanitein the Sotlight Anne Close, there is more than enogh insiring material in this isse to ll yor heart this month. I inite yo to takethe free time yo hae dring Jly to reect on the things that are imortant in yor life, enjoy the little moments soaking the sn withfriends and family, and look for ways that yo can se yor talents to gie back to those arond yo.

Smmer ofcially kicked off Jne 21 and this made me think abot thesring we wraed . Comared to some wild weather years, sring 2014is denitely going down in the books as relatiely tame. After a total of 95tornadoes in the sring of 2013, we only had seen in Oklahoma this year.unfortnately, one of those tornadoes trned deadly in Qaaw, OK, and tothe residents of that town, this year was deastating. The Qaaw tornadowas rated an EF 2 and is crrently the largest tornado we hae had inthe sooner state this year. Thats how it goes sometimes, some years are

absoltely relentless, like 2013, and others are mch more qiet like this yearso far.It is imortant to remember that smmer doesnt mean or tornado threatis oer in Oklahoma. The atmoshere doesnt follow or calendar, andtornadoes hae occrred in all 12 months of the year. The excellent news thisyear is rain chances are contining. We are now in or forth year of droght,bt hae been making some ositie headway oer the ast seeral weeks. The rain chances are still looking decent into the beginning of Jly. We allknow how hot smmers can be in this beatifl state, bt as long as the rainskee coming, the endless trile digit days will stay at bay. Crrent forecastkees the rainy days arond and the extreme heat away.

Im excited to see what the smmer 2014 will hae in store, Im sre hoingfor more rain and lenty of lake weather mixed in.

A Look at Norman High and Norman North First Team All-City players by Chris

While many stdents are enjoying smmeracations, mission tris or rearing for thestart of their next season of athletics, I take alook back and recognize the yong men andwomen that won First Team All-City awardsas recognized by The Oklahoman.

Norman High took down North in the Cross-Town Clash and was led by First TeamAll-City defensie lineman Cade parker.parker, who is walking-on at the uniersityof Oklahoma, broke Norman Highs singleseason sack record and in the Cross-Town game sacked anyone wearing aTimberwoles jersey. Joining parker fromNorman High on the First Team is robablythe most athletic kicker in the state, MattHockett. Hockett did the kicking dtiesfor the Tigers and t the defense in goodosition with booming nts and t ointson the board with long eld goals and extraoints.

After a rn to the state game and losing 32

seniors, who was going to ste for theTimberwoles? Tight end payton princetook oer a big role for the Timberwoles.prince took direct snas and een layeddefensie end when injries deleted theline. prince will be catching asses for theGolden Hrricane in Tlsa. Nick Basqinehad big shoes to ll after losing big seniorsand did not disaoint. Basqine, who will

join parker from Norman High as a walk onfor the uniersity of Oklahoma, showed allleels of skill with seed, hands and jmingability.

Wrestling in the state of Oklahoma issomething many nderestimate. This yearalone, the state had e teams in the nationalto 50 ranked wrestling rograms. LeiBerry, a two time state title holder, wrestled inthe 160 ond class and won a title at Tttlebefore transferring to North and winning atitle in 2013. Berry laced third in his seniorseason and I woldnt be srrised to seeBerry rse his ftre in MMA.

The swimming teams in the city of Normanhae a niqe featre that not many teamsexerience. They are both led by the coachof the year Kent Nicholson. Coach Nicholson

has talent at both Norman High and North. The Oklahoman selected Norman NorthsMadie Sarantakos as the female swimmerof the year. The sohomore swimmer isrocient in the bttery and the freestyleand heled the relay teams and NormanNorth girls swimming to win the state title.Freshman Claire Li who swam the seedeent in the 50 M freestyle, took third in thefreestyle and the 100 free while heling twornner- relay teams. Another freshmanfrom North, Tiffany W, took second in the100 bttery, third in the 100 backstroke andwas art of two siler medal relay teams. The girls are loaded for a reeat.

For Coach Nicholson the North boysreeated as the state chamions and wereled by the swimmer of the year Jstin W.The jnior and All-American swimmer wonthe gold in two relays as well as the 100backstroke and the 200 IM while setting staterecords in both. Joining Jstin on the All-CityFirst Team is Alex McMillen, a jnior whotook third in the 50 freestyle and fth in the100 freestyle, as well as articiating in thewinning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

James Dyer, a freshman, took second in the100 freestyle eent and third in the 100 back-stroke and heled in two relay wins. Alongwith Gianlca Di Tano, a senior who wonstate in the 100 backstroke and second in the200 freestyle, the Itialian exchange stdentheled the Timberwoles claim the back-to-back state chamionshi title.

In track and eld, the Tigers and theTimberwoles were well reresented on TheOklahomans All-City Team. For the girls

track and eld teams, Norman Norths BelleWallace was All-City in the 800 and 1,600meter rn, while Norman High ole-alterJlia Hanks reresents the Tigers on the All-City Team. Haley Redwine was a dominateforce in the 3,200 meter rn and was a clearchoice for First Team All-City.

The boys All-City team was led by BenBarrett of Norman North who took home All-City First Team honors in the 1.600 and 3,200meters, as well as Timberwoles ole-alterHeath Stacy.

Cross contry is another eent in whichBen Barrett of Norman North was on TheOklahomans All-City First Team as well beingthe rnner of the year. For the girls All-CityFirst Team was led by the coach of the yearMike Ramsey of Norman North who was inhis nal year before retiring in grand fashion.Coach Ramsey had First Team members inAbbey Mace and Isabella Rose, along withrnner of the year Belle Wallace. HaleyRedwine was strong for the Tigers crosscontry team and she garnered First TeamAll-City honors as well.

The golf teams for both Norman High and

Norman North had good years. ThomasJohnson, a jnior for Norman North, receied First Team All-City honors as wellas freshman Kaitlin Milligan for the LadyTimberwoles. With an early season win inArdmore and a win in the 6A West regionalwith a rond of 69, this yong golfer has a lotto look forward to after a to 10 nish in herrst season of arsity golf.

Baseball here in Norman has seen talentthroghot the years. This season was nodifferent. North looked to retrn to the statetitle game, bt came short in regionalaction. Brad Kinsey, the Wichita Statecommit, took in First Team All-City honors as

the left handed itcher was 10-1 and hminscle 1.28 era in 54.1 innings itcwith 89 strike-ots.

While Norman North won both the boyand the girls state title, Norman High wa talented side for both the boys and thgirls. The Girls All-City First Team wasby coach of the year from Norman NorDon Rother. A 13 game win streak to the year heled ca the teams rst statitle. Coach Rother had Bri Kesterstewho will be laying for the uniersity oAlabama Birmingham Lady Blazers neyear. Bri was a talent that cold lay i

back on defense or hel sh the acefront. Joining Bri was her teammate jHaley Woodard. Woodard is a two timtitle holder in the 400 meter in track asas a talented basketball layer. On theis where Woodard can t it all to se,seed is nmatched in high school socWoodard cold hae been layer of thbt dont think she wont be for it neyear.

For the boys All-City First Team, MaroCichero was the layer of the year. ThSMu bond, two time Gatorade playe

year was smooth on the eld and no swas better than the bicycle kick that leTimberwoles to a ictory oer EdmonMemorial. Cichero was joined on FirsTeam by teammate Jacob Jerles. Jerlseed and creatiity with the ball madedangeros on the offensie attack. The

jnior will be looked on as a leader wTimberwoles look to reeat next yearHockett was on the First Team All-Cityteam as well, his size and strength let dominate and control most mid-eld acWhile he will be laying football for OkState, Hockett wold also be dangerothe Diision 1 soccer ranks.

This time a year ago, a ision was born to delier freshroasted, qality coffee to a local consmer. This dreambecame Flatlander coffee, a local gro that tirelessly roastsfresh, delicios coffee that is sold at coffee shos arondNorman. A qartet of friends, polly and Cameron Har andLei and Emily Wilkins, came together with an idea to roasttheir own coffee and came with the name Flatlander toreinforce the idea of it being locally roasted right here in theatland of Norman, OK. Knowing little abot coffee roasting, polly Har conslted her brother, who had already been inthe ractice of roasting his own coffee at home. When theteam started, they only had a drm roaster small enogh toroast less than a ond of coffee at a time. Bt desite thesehmble beginnings, in the last year the Flatlander Coffee Co.team has created something really great!

Jst this ast month, Flatlander Coffee celebrated their one-year anniersary with a hge celebration at their commer-cial location at 1140 N. Flood. The celebration inclded liemsic, an oen hose tor of their location, free coffee anda hge sale on bagged coffee. The focal oint of the cele-bration was the iewing of the comanys new drm roaster. When the team rst started they were interested in roast-ing coffee withot going into a lot of debt, so they started a

fndraising drie on kickstarter.com to hel fnd their newlarger drm. The camaign aid off and they were able toraise enogh money to get the roaster, thanks to the gener-os hel of their sorters. At the anniersary oen hose, the Flatlander team showed off their new roaster as a tokenof thanks to those who had heled them make their dreamhaen.

So whats next for Flatlander? polly Har shared her drewith me for the ftre of Flatlander. She hoes in the ftto oen a location where consmers can come and interwith the Flatlander team. Right now they hae a commesace to roast the coffee, bt no sace for cstomers tocome and engage with the roasters and their rodcts. pwants to establish relationshis with the farmers that grothe coffee so that she can connect her cstomers with thcoffee from the grond to the c. Additionally, she hoehold cing classes and roasting classes to edcate Nomanites on the ossibilities of what great coffee can be At the end of the day, the Flatlander mission is to alwayslier fresh-roasted coffee to local consmersno one wato order coffee that was roasted halfway across the conand arries stale, so the Flatlander team waits to roast ycoffee ntil yo order it, to ensre that it arries to yo ateak of freshness.

Now I bet yore wondering where yo can get a c of tlocally conscios brew. First, yo can order it off their weat www.atlandercoffeeco.com and theyll send it right todoor. Or, if yo dont want to wait for it to be deliered anyo need a c right now (as I did after I got off the honwith polly), yo can head oer to Caf plaid on Cams

Corner. Caf plaid exclsiely sells Flatlander coffee, soyoe eer tried plaids coffee, now yo know why its sdelicios! Additionally, Crimson and Whied Cream, alson Cams Corner, featres a local brew from Flatlandeonce a month, so if yo haen into C&WC, ask when thbe sering it next! The Flatlander team ts their heart ineery bag of coffee they roast, so sto by and try some ayoll see why Flatlander has qickly become Normansfaorite roaster.

The Waganer family eagerly awaited the birth of baby Libbye Marshall in May of 2012. They were shocked to nd ot jsa month later that little Libbye had an extremely rare kidney disorder called Congenital Nehrotic Syndrome. When Janary of 2014 came and Libbye was nally bigenogh to be t on the kidney translant waiting list, thefamily had hoe that Libbye wold be able to receie trans-lants and recoer. unfortnately, jst a few weeks afterbeing on the list Libbye became seriosly ill and was diag-nosed with a ery nasty bacterial infection called eritonitis.Becase of the danger of the infection, the doctors had toremoe her from the waiting list ntil she has been infec-tion-free for six months. As of now, she has abot for moremonths ntil she can een be eligible to go on the waiting

list again, which, of corse, will entail another lengthy wait-ing rocess. Libbyes mother, Kelli Marshall, is hoing thatshe will be a donor match so that she can donate one of herkidneys to her little girl.

Rather than arahrasing my conersation with Kelli, it wasso itally imortant to my (and yor) nderstanding of thestrggles of the family that I wanted it here in its entirety. Here is Kellis ersectie on Libbyes ordeal:

I have had the opportunity in my career (Speech Therapist

and Co-Owner of Todays Therapy Solutions) to become

close with many parents of children with disabilities. I have

always thought I somewhat understood, but never reallyknew the struggle. The last two years have taught me more

than I could have ever imagined. I know now not to sweatthe small stuff (no matter how clich that sounds). I know to

kiss and hug and say I love you more often. I understandthat everyone is facing a challenge & very few really know

how challenging your struggle really is.

I never know how I would handle it if someone spoke of my

childs mortality. She was only six weeks old. As a mom,all you know is that you will ght. I myself do it, I watch my

mom do it with my brother and I watch every mother I knowght for their children...you just ght harder when everything

is on the line. I mean EVERYTHING. Life is on the line. Iremember one night when she was only around 6 weeks oldand we were in the hospital she and I were alone in the

tiny room at dark and I was talking to her as she was sleep-

ing. I told her I dont expect you to ght for me. I want you

here, I need you here, but I will be okay if you cant ght. Butbaby girl, if you ght this, I will ght even harder. Do it for

you, ght for yourself. I did it to release her, if she neededto be released. I did it to encourage her, everyone needs

encouragement. Ive said those words to her at one timeor another during every hospitalization and every time, shehas fought. She has fought for herself. She is the toughest,

bravest, most inspiring kid I know.

Jst a year into the Waganer familys trials with little Libbye,Libbyes other ncle, Jstin Waganer, went into the doc-tor after exeriencing nasea and chest ains. Accordingto Jstins brother, Jason, in a matter of hors what wasrst thoght to be nemonia was discoered to be a largegraefrit-sized canceros tmor in his chest wall. Js-tin nderwent contless tests, and eentally the doctorsdetermined that Jstin had an extremely rare tye of cancercalled Askins Sarcoma. As a reslt, Jstin has ndergone15+ ronds of high-dosage chemotheray, long hositaliza-

tions and srgery to remoe arts of the tmor. unfortnly, abot two months ago it was discoered that additiontmors had grown in the area where the srgery was doand he was sent to Hostons MD Anderson center to aggressie treatment. I had hoed to seak with Jstin, dring the time of the article he was in Hoston for anothextensie rond of chemotheray.

Jason exlains that the difclty of Jstins condition extefar beyond the hysical: At the time of his diagnosis, Js

was the single roider of income to a family of e (withthree children ages e and nder). De to the aggressinatre of his chemo treatments, he was forced to immedately go on disability. Jst six weeks into his disability, hiemloyer of 6+ years laid him off and he was forced to gnemloyment. Becase of the incredible nancial stresreslting from Jstin and Libbyes treatments, the familydecided to look for hel from the commnity.

In May of 2013, the family and friends of the Waganers on a golf tornament here in Norman to raise money to cJstin and Libbyes treatment. It was an incredible scceand the family is crrently organizing a second annal go

For a few glorios weeks in Aril and May, StART Norman, an exeriment sing the arts to reintegrate the olace into commnity, transformed Main Street between Webster and Santa Fe Aenes.

StART Norman trned Main Street into a ibrant, engaging commnity for citizens and artists alike. The soth side was with food, art and fn. vendors sold ice cream and artwork, and there were msic and games in the yard at the corner oMain and Santa Fe. The north side inclded a cycle track, bike arking and otdoor seating. More imortantly, the old lm

beryard at the corner of Main and Webster was renoated and retooled as an artists stdio where sontaneos works ofwere created.

The arts were reresented excetionally well at StART Norman. Art exhibits and erformances inclded an oomah bandNorman singers, sidewalk chalk art, oetry reading, Namron players Theatre, the Norman pblic Library, lie ainting, lscreenings, writing workshos, woodworking rojects, oen mics, the Sketchbook project and the Songwriters AssociatioNorman.

One examle of the artisans who articiated in StART Norman is Bob Manseld. Manseld was the accordionist for theoomah band that layed Aril 12. His bigger contribtion, thogh, was a demonstration concert on the accordion, coethe instrment from its inention in the mid-1800s forward. The concert was abot an hor and fteen mintes long and tred accordion msic by the decade.

We had eleen different instrments in the concert, accordions as well as sqeezeboxes, Manseld said. While the conwas ersonally satisfying, Manseld did say he wished StART Norman had been better attended.

Desite lower-than-anticiated attendance, existing bsinesses, like Sweet Basil, Elsie and the Bead Sho, benettedthe tick of eole and commerce in the area, as did seeral o- shos from merchants like Eat At Local, Das BooCam and Mariosa Coffee Roastery. Frthermore, many of the artisans exhibiting at StART Norman were able to introdthemseles and their work to a broader cross-section of the commnity. perhas most encoraging, the next generation introdced to the arts throgh a ariety of family art actiities dring StART Norman, inclding an alminm foil scltreactiity that is still featred on StART Normans Twitter feed (@STARTnorman).

For a 90s kid like me, there was nothingbetter than a new Lisa Frank folder and a ack of glitter gel ens. many Oklahoma families, thogh, coming with the extra moneyto ay for the school slies for their children can be a strggle.Always looking to remain inoled in the commnity, the united Wof Norman contines to sort the Stff the Bs fndraiser to heease the brden of these families in need by raising money to roschool slies for local children.

The fndraisers committee is comrised entirely high school stdents with some assistance from local rotary clbsand adlt adisors. 2014 marks the fth year for the Norman StffBs fndraiser.

Main Street from 10 a.m. to 1 .m. will be able to easily sot the eent gien that, of corse, the fndraisers school bs will be arked otside the mall! Last year oer$18,000 was raised for Stff the Bs according to Diane Mrhree

Between 700 and 1,children hae consistently been heled by this fndraising effort. For 2014, olnteers hoe to garner an additional $2,000 for a totfndraising goal of $20,000. It takes aroximately $30 to stff abackack fll of school slies for one child, so een the smallescontribtions hae a large imact.

Low-income families in need of the assistance Stff the Bs roican register for the rogram from Jly 14 -18 at the Bethel BatistMltirose Bilding located at 1132 McGee in Norman. Inteested families mst bring crrent roof of income (inclding TANFSSI, DHS, child sort, etc.), crrent roof of residence, socialsecrity cards for all family members and a crrent driers licensehoto identication card. The school sly distribtion is set to tlace on Agst 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the same location.

If any school slies and fnds are left oer after distribtion, theunited Way receies referrals from conselors to ensre that all othe items make their way into the hands of children in need. Theitems being roided inclde crayons, Kleenex, encils, siral notbooks, scissors, watercolors, markers, gle sticks, folders, eraserencil shareners, encil bags, ens, combination locks, comos

notebooks, colored encils, 1 inch binders, diiders, notebook aconstrction aer, dry erase markers and school boxes.

The high school stdents t a lot of time and effort into this ro-gram, says Ms. Mrhree. They realize that children in Normanshold hae the adantage of starting school with all the slies they need to be sccessfl. They make that haen throgh StffBs.

As the exectie director of the hilanthroic arm of Norman Regional Health System, Anne works togarner nancial sort from commnity members in order to kee Normans hosital system to incredibly high standards.unbeknownst to many, Norman Regional Health System is actally a non-rot health system, meaning that eery dollar thnot sent on organizational and stafng costs goes directly back to the rograms and facilities of the hosital. Anne seres a board of 28 members and Mayor Cindy Rosenthal where they solicit the nancial sort that kees or hositals rnning

The Barony of Namron is a member gro of the Society for CreatAnachronism, or SCA, which allows folks the chance to immerse thseles in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The local organizatiobeen arond for oer three decades and was formed by a gro whad attended the Medieal Fair in Norman.

The SCA incldes oer 30,000 members, and the Knowne World, is comrised of 19 kingdoms. Each kingdom has a nmber of baronies, shires and other local gros (www.baronyofnamron.org).

The Barony of Namron is in the Kingdom of Ansteorra, which is corised of modern day Oklahoma and Texas, and they hold tons ofeents eery week that are oen to the blic and free of charge.

The gro rides itself on accrately recreating the arios arts ancrafts, dress and actiities of re-17 centry cltres (600-1600 A.Members get to choose what articlar cltre or time eriod they to ortray, and get the oortnity to ofcially register their own he(symbol or crest) and name. Both the heraldry and name are reiefor their athenticity to the eriod before they can be aroed. Indthe amont of effort that these indiidals t into accrately deicthe Middle Ages is mind-blowing.

So I had to see it in erson.

I met with Jakob Krieg, the Knights Marshal and Dety Senesat Sellers Rec Center in OKC, and he exlained to me the basics oChialric Fighting. There were many different cltres and roles reresented at the ractice. There were knights and soldiers from JaRssia and poland, as well as a herald, and many other membersthe barony there that night. The intricacy of the armor that the memhad on was astonding. The mask of the Jaanese ghter looked something from a moie set, and many of the ghters wore fll armchainmail and all. The weaons we sed were thick sticks of rattanery exible, yet drable, material similar to bamboo. The combata

ght ntil one erson sstains a good hit that wold hae seerelyinjred them if real weaons were inoled.

Jakob got me sited , and I tried my hand at some Chialric FigI had a rattan sword and a metal shield, arm and leg ads, all embzoned with my honorary heraldry, the screaming weasel. My instrlet me know what a soft and hard hit was, and after some coachingallowed me the oortnity to wallo him.

Mostly, I jst hit his shield.

Bt its not jst ghting. The Barony of Namron has lots of eentsaailable to the blic. At the Chialric Fighting practice, women w

gathered in a room, working on calligrahy and ainting scrolls to ot as certicates of achieement at the next gathering. Eerythingfrom singing and oetry, to axe throwing and eriod msic can be at a tyical SCA eent, and eeryone is inited to join in.

Sometimes kids cant deend on their foster families to gie them eerything they need for a normal childhood. If they wago on a rafting tri or een receie Christmas resents, sometimes their families need to look for otside sort.

Interestingly, Ou football fandom is a main sorce of fnding to gie these kids a normal childhood.

If fans want a sneak eak at how Ous next football season is going to an ot, they can by tickets to a smmer lnche

where Bob Stoos and his coaching staff gie a sort of state of the nion address abot Ou football, says Tracy Crtis, blic relations chair for the Cleeland Conty Adisory Board.

The adience has the chance to ask qestions, Crtis said. Thats a whole lot of fn becase its not ery often that aroom fll of eole gets to ask Bob qestions.

All of the roceedings from ticket sales, as well as a rafe and lie action at the eent, go to the adisory board to sfoster kids throghot the year.

The adisory boards main rogram to hel foster kids is a Secret Santa. Eery Christmas, the adisory board asks fostekids to send them wish lists, and then the board sends eole ot with abot $125 to flll each childs gift wishes. If we dont make the money then the kids dont get the resents and the exeriences, Crtis said.

Sometimes heling foster kids hae a normal childhood simly means roiding essentials like beds.

Sometimes when a kid has to moe in with a foster family, its an emergency sitation and the family doesnt hae time toreare their home for the new child. So the adisory board has started roiding beds, bed frames and bnk beds.

It sed to be that we were bying, yo know, rafting tris and things like that, bt more and more were bying beds, becase eole dont hae anywhere to slee, Crtis said.

Crtis said the adisory board is trying to raise $90,000 at this years Coaches Lncheon a lofty goal, bt a necessary since the board has seen a major increase in the nmber of foster kids in Cleeland Conty.Last year the adisory board roided Christmas gifts for oer 700 kids.

Thats a hge increase in kids that need hel oer years ast, Crtis said. Were jst hoefl that the commnity will rognize what a hge need there is with these children and that folks will ste and hel s ot.Local bsinesses will sonsor resering tables at the lncheon, bt indiidals can by tickets as well. Tickets cost $35 findiidals, $425 for a half table and $700 for a fll table.

The Coaches Lncheon will take lace at 11 a.m. Jly 30 at Jorney Chrch in Norman. Contact Jaci Williams at (405) 35999 for inqiries abot becoming a sonsor, and isit the adisorys website, cabok.org, for more information.

    A Look Back at the

    Sooner Sluggers Seasons

Smmer has set in and the sorts season for the collegiateyear is behind s. The start of another school year and ofcorse another football season at the uniersity of Oklahomais on its way.

The Sooner softball and baseball teams hae a historyof sccess jst like the gridiron boys. patty Gasso andher Sooner softball team were the defending NationalChamions and looked to reeat. Coach Gasso had aretrning gro that wold gie her a chance.

The Sooners strggled early in the year. They were layingto talent bt this reared them for the rn they wold

make late in the season. The Sooners lost slgger LarenChamberlain for almost 30 games and the Sooners soonfond new leaders. The Sooners were named Big 12Chamions once again and rolled into NCAA Regionalswhere they wold host.

The Sooners took care of bsiness defeating Bryant 14-4,and t an end to Texas A&M for the second straight yearin Norman beating the Aggies 9-8 and 11-6. That gae theSooners a chance to host a ser regional and face the teamthey defeated for the National Chamion title last year, theTennessee volnteers.

Ou beat Tennessee in game one 8-1 before falling in gametwo 4-0 after many lengthy delays. Game three arried andonce again it was the Sooners ower slggers that led theway as Ou won 8-2, nching a ticket to ASA and a chanceto reeat as National Chams.

Thosands acked into ASA Hall of Fame Stadim for theSooners rst game, and it was a familiar foe, the uniersityof Alabama, and their ace Jaclyn Traina. Shelby pendlyhit a home rn off Traina and gae the Sooners hoe.unfortnately, Traina sht down the Sooner bats for the restof the night and Alabama won 6-2.

The Sooners took care of Loisiana-Lafayette 3-1 tosend the Rajn Cajns home. Coach Gasso and herSooners took on the nmber one seed, the Oregon Dcks, and fell 4-2. While the Sooners didnt win the NationalChamionshi again this year, with retrning layers LarenChamberlain, Kelsey Steens, Georgia Casey and Kady Selfleading the Sooners, we shold be faored to retrn to ASAHall of Fame Stadim in search of another national title.

For pete Hghes who came in to take oer for the dearSnny Galloway, hoes were high this Sooner baseballseason. It was the 20 year anniersary of the 1994 SooNational Title win oer Georgia Tech. The season was alearning exerience for the layers, coaches and the Sofans. The baseball team foght and clawed its way to a 29 record this year.

There were s and downs throghot the season for thSooners. Yong talent and layers were thrown into bigroles and forced to ste . The Big 12 roed to be atogher challenge than exected, with for teams hostinser regionals and three of those teams making their w

to Omaha and the College World Series.

For Coach Hghes and the Sooners, gys like Mac Jamwho batted .330 this year after only seeing nine aearalast year led the team. Sheldon Nese and Niko Bentewere yong layers that roed to hae a sark for thisteam. There are some Big 12 coaches who hae said, bthe time he leaes Ou, Nese cold be the best right hahitter the Big 12 has eer seen.

The Sooners reformed well in the non-conference seaseen thogh defense strggled and they were looking tosolid itching, something they wold strggle with all yea

The Sooner baseball team foght against OSu, TCu,Texas and Texas Tech, all teams that made it to the seregional rond. While the Sooner baseball team showedimroement, the record and wins didnt hae the shine many baseball sorters like.

Coach Hghes and the Sooners made it into the Big 12tornament, something the Longhorns failed to do for theast two years. Ou was the nmber eight seed and hadlay Oklahoma State for the sixth time, and it wold not the last. The Cowboys beat the Sooners 13-4 and forceSooners in the losers bracket. Ou then took care of TexTech in dramatic fashion, and that set game seen ofBedlam Series this year. OSu won again, reailing 11ths ending the Sooner season.

While this was not the year the layers, coaches or fanswanted, dont worry, Ou baseball is in good hands withCoach Hghes. With both Nese and Bentello comingback, the Sooner baseball team will be back for more. IfOu can nd solid itching and a better defense, this cobe a team that makes a dee rn frther than the Big 12tornament.

Sseko Designs is one iece of the larger ictre of bringing imoerished eole into safe and nancially stable sitationwithot charityfair trade. Fair trade began as a concet; the idea that, gien the roer tools and enironment, eolein third-world contries can thrie throgh bsinesses that allow them to sell their rodcts all oer the world. Fair trade

deeloed into a concrete moement when the Fair Trade Federation was fonded in 1994, and later pal Rice fondedTrade uSA in 1998. These organizations, while categorized as nonrots, emhasize that they are not roiding charity;are giing others a way to escae oerty and indeendently maintain their lifestyles.

Althogh the moement is yong, fair trade has swet the nation, and now there are ofcially 319 Fair Trade Towns. Noraccomlished fair trade stats imressiely early as it was the 17th town to be labeled as sch. As otlined by Fair TradeuSAs website, here are the reqirements to be certied as a Fair Trade Town.

On May 19, 2010, thanks to the action gro Norman Fair Trade, Norman achieed fair trade stats. Howeer, many citiremain in the dark abot Normans dedication to fair trade. Dozens of fair trade rodcts sit on the sheles of Norman stnbeknownst to many shoers. Finding fair trade rodcts is as simle as stoing by Caf plaid or een Starbcks anasking for fair trade tea or coffee. Both Antiqe Garden and Stash carry arios fair trade items as well. Additionally, thegrocery stores are lined with tea, coffee, sgar and chocolate marked with the Fair Trade uSA logo. This logo certies throdct was created in safe labor conditions in a third-world contry in which eole were aid fair wages.

Normans fair trade feer has trickled onto Ous cams and ignited the organization called Sooners for Fair Trade. Thissmall gro of stdents, fonded by Kayli Bollinger, has already made a hge imact and attracted attention from nationfair trade organizations. Recently they assed a resoltion throgh stdent goernment that sets a goal for the cams tbecome e ercent fair trade. Members of the gro, like social media chair Madeline Greer, hold fair trade ideals closetheir hearts.

I denitely like that fair trade is beneting eole. Like coffee, for examle. Im going to by coffee, I might as well by cthat hels someone, Greer said.

Fair trade items hae become exonentially more aailable, esecially to a commnity like Norman that has becomeconscios of its rchases. The only barrier between fair trade rodcts and cstomers is the lack of awareness.

    44 ON THE CORNER: FASHION

A local Fair Trade steering committee is formed that meets on a reglar basis. The aim of the committee is toincrease awareness of and demand for Fair Trade rodcts throgh edcation, otreach and eents.

A range of Fair Trade rodcts is aailable in local stores, cafs and other enes. These inclde Fair TradeCertied rodcts and rodcts sold by retailers that are members of the Fair Trade Federation.

Fair Trade rodcts are sed by a nmber of local organizations sch as laces of worshi, schools, hositals andofces.

The local camaign attracts media attention and isible blic sort, inclding ress and radio. The town and city concil ass a resoltion sorting Fair Trade and the local camaign.

    OU Football

Stadium Expansion Multi-Million Dollar RenovationsNews broke earlier this May that Dean Bleins conrmed that a new roject for the exansion of the Gaylord FamilyOklahoma Memorial Stadim was in the works and wold be aroed and annonced at a ftre Board of Regentsmeeting.

plans were rojected to be anywhere between $350-400 million. The roject wold see an exansion of the seating

on the soth end of the stadim, as well as grades to the training facilities and weight room and dated sitesand ress box. The roject is rmored to begin after the last home game against OSu on Dec. 6, 2014, with thegrand oening hoeflly taking lace in time for the home oener against Akron the year following. The bowl beingcreated in the soth end zone shold create anywhere from 8,000-10,000 more seats, and with the waiting list forseason tickets growing each year, the Ou Athletic Deartment is sre to ll eery single one .

I was able to get an insider iew into the polos architectral renderings for the Gaylord Family OklahomaMemorial Stadim exansion roject. polos is resonsible for sch sorts enes as Sn Life Stadim for theMiami Dolhins in 1987, which was the rst ene to featre clb seating, and Oriole park at Camden Yards, whichwon the American Institte of Architects National Honor Awards for both rban design and architectre, jst to namea cole. Their work is tremendos, and their list of achieements is honestly too long for this article.

I receied a acket from a trsted sorce who had access to the stadim exansion roject. That acket containedfor roosed exteriors for the soth end exansion of the stadim. In each, the bowl on the soth end is closed ,and an entrance to the stadim has been added that sills ot into an oal drieway that connects to Lindsey Street. The new entrance and rondabot, lets call it, effectiely eats some of the ractice eld located on the corner ofJenkins and Lindsey, bt all of the architectral renderings featre two ractice elds rnning north and soth to thewest of the new soth entrance.

The bowl addition looks to be the same height as the north end, with the crrent soth end zone section remainingessentially the same, rising aboe the entrance. The for roosals were broken into two basic gros: tworenderings featring water fontains in the soth entrance, along with extensie brick and rock featres, and tworenderings withot fontains, featring exteriors made mostly of windows.

The roosal that my sorce described as haing the most otential to ass the coming ote featred the

rondabot coming off of Lindsey Street, jst before Jenkins, that winds in a circle arond a massie water fontainot front. On both sides of the soth entrance, trees line the sidewalks as a natral barrier to the ractice elds onthe left, and the green sace on the right. Moing north from the fontain is an otdoor entranceway mch like thenorth entrance, with a big concrete gathering area, featring another smaller water featre.
