Lyman Frank Baum was born in 1856 in Chittenango (New York).

He was a sick child, because of a heart condition he suffered from since birth. In 1868, after turning

12, he became a cadet for Peekskill Military Academy, in his home state. As a teenager, he had two

main passions: printing and theatre. In 1882, Baum married Maud Gage,

daughter of one of the most important advocates for women's

emancipation. He also worked for several newspapers, like The

Saturday Pioneer or the Evening Post. In 1897,

publishing house Way and Williams issued a series of stories,

each one based on a children's song, entitled 'Mother Goose in Prose'. On May 15th, 1900 he published

'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', illustrated by Denslow. It was a

total success. Both Baum and Denslow reached the peak of their careers. Later, Baum brought 'The

Wonderful Wizard of Oz' to theatres and kept on writing stories.

In 1910 he moved to Hollywood, where he died nine years later.

'The Wizard of Oz' is the most read and translated American children's novel in the world, and therefore, one of the favourites books of children in every country. This story narrates Dorothy's magical journey following the yellow brick road to Emerald City. She travels with her friends—the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion, searching for the Wizard of Oz. Despite having a different plot than traditional popular stories, it gives the message of defending good against evil and truth against lies.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859, within a family where almost everyone stood out in an artistic discipline. He was

educated in a public school in his home town and later in a Jesuit

school, where he thoroughly studied Latin prose writers and English

classics, mainly Shakespeare. After that, he studied Medicine in the

University of Edinburgh until 1881. In 1886 he finished writing 'A Study

in Scarlet', shaping Sherlock Holmes' character, who would

become the protagonist of many of his stories until 1926 ('The Sign of

the Four,' T'he Hound of the Baskervilles', 'The Adventures of

Sherlock Holmes'...). However, he also created other unique

characters, like Professor Challenger (the protagonist in several novels,

including 'The Lost World'), and he also wrote historical novels, which,

he confessed, were his highest literary aspirations. On 1902, he was knighted by the British government,

and he died from a heart attack in 1930 in Crowborough (England).

Resting on his whalebone leg, Captain Ahab guides the Pequod's crew towards disaster. He is driven by his obsession to kill the white whale, Moby Dick; the Evil's reincarnation that mutilated his body and soul forever. An essential adventure novel, a summary on whalers and the sea, and a classic of universal literature of all times.

Herman Melville was born in New York in 1919. Son of a relatively

successful merchant, he became orphan at 12. At 17, he made his first

trip to Liverpool. He worked as a banker, rural teacher, crew member

of a whaling ship, and a deserter. After being captured by a

cannibalistic tribe, he managed to escape with the help of some

Australian marines, with whom he participated in a mutiny. He went

back to Boston in 1844. His first novels are based on the adventures

he lived. In 1847 he married the daughter of the Supreme Judge of the

state of Massachusetts, with whom he had four children. After 'Moby Dick' failed, he started writing for

two magazines. In 1857 he published 'The Confidence-Man', another failure. He worked as a customs

inspector from 1866 to 1885, and he focused his literary activity on poetry until 1891, the year he died, when he

wrote 'Billy Bud'.

E ver since childhood, Leonardo da Vinci stood out because of his huge curiosity and his great drawing and painting

skills. He was born in Vinci but he soon moved to Florence, where he got admitted in Andrea del Verrocchio's workshop. He was an exceptional artist, and he discussed about things no one else had ever talked about before. He was capable of dreaming and he wanted to make his dreams come true, like trying to fly, for example. He wished to combine imagination and science, creating under the rules of science but without putting emotion away. All of this was reflected in his many notebooks, where he wrote down his impressions, ideas and drawings. Before dying, he left them under the custody of his disciple Francesco Melzi, but it wasn't well into the 19th century when they became truly popular.

Eliacer Cansino was born in Seville in 1954. Writer and Philosophy teacher, he has dedicated his literary work to children and youth. He makes frequent contributions in magazines and reflection forums about children and YA narrative. In 1997, he received the Lazarillo Award for ‘The Velazquez Mystery’. Some of his most relevant books published by Anaya are: Nube y los niños/Cloud and the Children, ‘The pencil that found its name’, ‘Julian is scared’, ‘The Legends of Bécquer told by Eliacer Cansino’ and ‘I, Robinson Sanchez, being shipwrecked’. In 2009, he won the VI Anaya Children and Young Adult Literature Award with the novel ‘A Room in Babel’, which the next year won the National Children and Young Adult Literature Award, granted by the Ministry of Culture. His work has been largely translated to French, German and Japanese.

The first night, Raquel, the instructor in charge, wakes up all twelve participants. Apparently, she found a dead bird on her bed. All fingers accusingly point at Lia. The day before, she had been complaining about how little she liked birds and nature. Lia tries to defend herself, but she will have a hard time finding convincing arguments.

He would reaffirm his poetic trajectory with ‘Lime Sceptre’ (Madrid, Rialp, 1985), which got the second prize in the 1984 Adonais Award; and ‘Steady Fog’ (Madrid, Hiperión, 1989). As a prose writer, he is the author of the children's stories ‘Upsidedown Island’ (Anaya Infantil, 2007), ‘The Words of Water’ (Sopa de Libros, Anaya, 2008) and ‘Love and Snow Gazelle’ (ECU, Alicante, 2008).

Poems inspired by trees, animals, matters of the heart... A multitude of verses that are key to the soul and open the doors of the invisible. Poems dedicated to two brothers, Troche and Moche, who would listen to them full of illusion, a pinch of melancholy, and always with a smile ready on their lips.

A diverse collection of poems full of imagination and references to nature, everyday life, word plays and poet Miguel Hernández.

Diego Arboleda was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1976, and years later he graduated in Hispanic Philology by the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has worked in one of the biggest bookshops in the city. He won twice the Premio de Cuentos Ilustrados Ciudad de Badajoz with illustrator Eugenia Ábalos, and in 2012 he won the Literary Creation Lazarillo Award for ‘Forbidden to Read Lewis Carroll’. With this book, he won the National Children and Young Adult Literature Award in 2014. In collaboration with illustrator Raúl Sagospe, besides ‘Forbidden to Read Lewis Carroll’, he also published ‘A Billion Pipes’, ‘Spiralling Adventures’, ‘Crumpled Papers’ and ‘The Unhunters of Lost Species’.

Some threads are as thick as rope, and others are so thin they are barely visible. Others are made of words, like the ones forming this story. It narrates how the governor, ruler and leader Creto decided to expel magicians, wizards and sorcerers from his city, because he did not like magic very much. And how two sisters, Ana and Ari, became friends with Aton the Giant, who always appeared in their pictures, and helped him solve his huge problem.

A story about absolute power and its injustices, where two girls will use their imagination and intelligence to defeat a wicked dictator.

Gabriel is a quite special child, because he was born deaf. His uncle Miguel, narrator by trade, did not want his nephew to miss any of his stories, so he learnt sign language to be able to communicate with him. He also gives him amazing birthday presents, which he accompanies with his most fantastic and funny stories.

Carles Cano was born in Valencia in 1957. After going through some jobs, he graduated in Valencian Philology and taught in several vocational education high schools for five years. He has also worked in children's Valencian radio and TV shows. That might be the reason why his books are rich in visual images. His ability for storytelling renews the fantasies of ancient narrators —like old times grandmothers, for example— and invites us to follow his steps and return to the old habit of storytelling.

Alfredo Gómez Cerdá has become the winner of the XVI Anaya Award with the original ‘Broken Nymph’. A book for readers aged 14 and older, starring a teenage girl who starts writing a diary as a therapeutic measure to overcome a toxic relationship.

The main character in the novel, Marina, is dating Eugenio, a boy who imposes his will on her, separates her from her friends and controls her on social networks. But one day he ends the relationship, leaving Marina puzzled, as she is still in love with him despite him treating her so badly. After the break-up, one of Eugenio's friends will approach her, looking for something more than friendship.

A novel that addresses teenage love, psychological and physical abuse in a relationship, and the impossibility of keeping away from something that hurt us. A realistic story that lays out a topical issue in our society, through a realistic narrative voice that does not make any concessions.

The jury members stated that the book stands out by its "literary coherence and stren- gth". It is "an introspective story about teenage love, pain, friendship, jealousy, anger... Where the narrator's voice is put into a place with no perspective and no value judgement, with many inte- resting shades of grey". They also pointed out that "it is a moving novel, with a surprising and startling ending, and with which teenagers will both escape from life and face it".
