Dear Friends,This magazine is a private, monthly publication just for you! It is by you and especially for you! Please take the time to look through your neighbor-hood newsletter each month to learn more about the lives and homes of the neighbors around you. As we quickly move through our busy lives each day it is easy to lose touch with our com-munity, but isn’t the friendly atmo-

sphere of this area what drew us to live here in the first place?

This publication is being provided FREE OF CHARGE to you as a homeowner as the cost of producing, printing, and mailing each newsletter is covered by the advertising partners that you see in each issue. We try our best to screen our advertisers to ensure that they can provide the types of services that you may need or want as a homeowner. If you currently utilize a business that does excellent work, please let us know; they may want to reach out to your neighbors as well. Also, if you own or run a business and would like information on reaching your neighbors each month, contact me for advertising information.

Along with the magazine, we will host various social events throughout the year to bring the community together. Join us as

we tour local restaurants and taste divine cuisine, go to fun salon reviews, golf tournaments, and more! I look forward to meeting each of you at our upcoming neighborhood events!

Best regards,Kathleen JoyPublisher, Seville [email protected]

Tom and Kim Stutting of Greenfield Acres

HomeMonthof the

By Kim Stutting

We choose the Gilbert area because my husband and I are from Iowa and Gilbert has that small town feel with all the big town amenities. I love seeing the dairy farms and the corn crops growing. Then right down the street is a great shopping center. The people in Gilbert are so nice and kind.

We were attracted to Greenfield Acres because of the Acre lots.In this neighborhood you have to have 70% grass in your front yard. I love having different styles of homes and it made us feel like we were back in the Mid-West. All the neighbors are friendly and there is always someone there to offer a helping hand. Another big draw for us to build in Greenfield Acres is the beautiful views of the San Tan Mountains.

Our custom house was built in 2004. We wanted a house with lots of space for the kids and for the adults. We built our home to have plenty of room for company and family to hang out in. Our basement is for the kids to have their own space and bring their friends over and enjoy watching a movie in the theater. The Acre is great for family where they can run around and go swimming.

This house is very special to me is because I raised my kids in it and we enjoy having family at our home for BBQs and the holidays.

Seville captured our hearts over 10 years ago when we pur-chased our first home regardless of the 2 dairy farms on Higley and Chandler Heights or that the nearest grocery store was “Safeway” on Power and Queen Creek. Something inside kept telling us this is the neighborhood we needed to be in.

Matt and I ( Jen) moved to Gilbert in 2003 when I was preg-nant with our first baby so Matt could attend dental school at A.T. Still University. We moved from Cedar City, Utah where we both graduated from Southern Utah University.

Within the first months of living in Arizona, our son, Wade (now 9) was born, followed by Seth (now 7) in 2005. Matt graduated dental school in 2007 and opened his first practice, “Vista Dorada Dental,” in Gilbert, in 2008. Since then, Matt has opened 2 other practices in Yuma and Maricopa. We have

also been blessed with 3 more kiddos: Trent (5), Rylee (3), and Casen (1.)

We are a big family with lots of busy, little kids so we take advantage of the amenities Seville has to offer. My favorite is the gym. You may know me as the self-proclaimed “crazy pregnant girl” because I will be at the gym the day I deliver my babies. I might look ridiculous, but I need to do something for my sanity! I love the gym and classes that Seville offers.

We also love to play tennis. Live ball, clinics, lessons, you name it, we’ve done it. How can you not love the pools at Seville? We love to swim at the club. My kids love to do swim team each summer too.

My children have grown up at these parks. When we were in dental school I do not know what I would have done for fun with my babies had we not lived near a park? I cannot even count how many hours we’ve logged in that sand.

I’m a runner and could not choose a better course to train on. The tree-lined streets cannot be beat. Matt, myself and my 2

older boys run and Trent is excited to join the Running Club at Rigg’s Elementary this year, as he is a kindergartener there. We love Rigg’s and love that our children are able to attend an elementary school, close by, with many of their neighborhood friends, which has amazing teachers, fun activities and a com-munity feel that some people can only dream about.

The community feel you get in Seville is truly something special.

In August of last year, one of my worst nightmares came true when I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. I had an army of my friends from Seville standing behind me, when I was facing brain surgery with the possibility of leaving behind my husband and five young children. I knew some of the people in my army very well, others I had never met, but all of them were praying and caring for my family and me. We had meals, gifts, notes, and a lot of love constantly flowing in for months. After brain surgery and cancer treatment that I am still undergoing, I feel very strong and thankful to be where I am today. Matt and I made one of the best choices we’ve ever made to live in Seville many years ago.

The Assistant Chef d'equipe on the West Coast for the United States Equestrian Team, will be here in Gilbert on Septem-ber 14 & 15, 2013. You will not find Ber-nie Traurig in any kitchen, as Asst. Chef d’equipe, to George Morris (considered the Founding Father of Hunt Seat Equi-tation), Bernie will be found in the horse arena sharing his amazing riding experi-ence with enthusiastic riders and Olym-pic hopefuls of all ages. Chef d’equipe is a French word meaning “Forman of the Team”. That’s quite the title and he has earned every letter of it.

Bernie is a decorated rider winning 48 Show Jumping Grand Prix's, as a Junior, he won both the AHSA Medal and ASPA Maclay Finals , and in 2009 he was inducted into the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame,. Bernie Traurig is one of the few riders in the world to successfully compete and achieve the top level of competition in all three of the International Equestrian Olympic disciplines, Show Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing. He has over half a century of experience, knowledge, and success to share in his online Coaching site and in person doing clinics around the world. In September, we are pleased to let you know that Bernie will be at Horse Shoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek and then dining at Gilbert’s exqui-site Seville Golf and & Country Club.

The Arizona Hunter Jumper Association (AHJA), and the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), teamed up

together to bring Bernie to our state for a FREE member clinic. This clinic is a way to give back and to say thank you too its members. We, think it’s a great way to get some excitement around this amazing sport. All members are welcome to audit / observe the clinic and 24 lucky mem-bers will be selected to be a part of the clinics participates. A life time opportu-nity, for sure. Participating Members are chosen through the presentation of a let-ter to the selection committee introduc-ing themselves, their equestrian goals and what they hope to achieve from the clinic. So come on out and meet our Chef. He

is serving up a buffet of tips and tech-niques you won’t want to miss.

The menu at Sushi Creek features a wide array of great selec-tions, make only from the freshest and highest quality ingredi-ents, with something sure to please every member of your group. Our group had some sushi fans and some that were not. So they provided us with a wonderful selection of raw and cooked items to enjoy. They even have an “I hate sushi” menu with burgers and fries! The kids loved the variety and the adults were pleased to finally know there is a pleasant and close restaurant the whole family can enjoy. They even have happy hour and a to-go menu!

“Experience Quality in Our Neighborhood!”

Sushi Creek is located at 21805 S. Ellsworth Road #B103, on the NE corner of Ellworth & Ocotillo Roads. For more information please contact 480.677.4333 or visit, www.sushi-creek.com.

PreveNtioN iS the BeSt MediciNe – Why you ShouLd coNSider a corPorate truStee

By Becky Cholewka

Revocable living trusts are a powerful and commonly used estate planning tool. Whenever a trust is created, there is also an accompanying position created called the trustee. The trustee is a person or entity appointed within the trust document that is responsible for the administration and management of the trust.

The trustmaker usually names himself or herself as the current trustee. But if the trustmaker becomes incapacitated, or when the trustmaker passes away, a backup trustee called a "successor trustee" must take over the responsibility of managing the trust. Many people who create trusts default to a child, family member, or close personal friend to be their successor trustee. In some sit-uations, the hiring of a corporate trustee may be a wise decision.

avoiding Family Strife Sometimes, folks know when creating their trust and estate plan that their family or beneficiaries are not going to get along after their death. One way to reduce family friction is to appoint a corporate trustee. The corpo-rate trustee brings objectivity and neutrality to what can be an already volatile family situation.

When a family member or friend is chosen to be the successor trustee, others involved may feel jealous they were not cho-sen for the role or they may not like the way the trust is being handled. Sometimes a family member that is chosen to be the trustee is resentful of the position because of the time commit-ment and the negative family reactions. When a third party, corporate trustee is in charge, they are in a better position to navigate these complicated family dynamics.

What about the Cost? Avoiding the cost of a corporate trustee is one of the most common reasons people chose a family member or friend as the successor trustee. While there are costs associated with a corporate trustee, (usually a percentage of the assets under management) many individual successor trustees end up hiring other professionals to help them administer the trust. It is not uncommon for an individual trustee to hire an accountant, finan-cial advisor, tax planner, or attorney to help with properly executing the trust. It costs money to hire these other professionals including flat fees, hourly fees, and/or a percentage of the assets under man-agement. The corporate trustee may have many products available under one roof for one price, making the cost to administer the trust with a corporate trustee lower than one may think.

Corporate Trustees have expertise A corporate trustee is an experienced professional trustee. While individual trustees may be highly educated and competent, they normally do not have the time or technical knowledge to properly execute the terms of the trust in a timely and efficient manner. A corporate trustee understands the importance of accountability to the trust’s beneficiaries and already has systems in place for accurate recordkeeping and reporting.

A corporate trustee may also act as a co-trustee with the succes-sor family member trustee. This may ensure the family member is comfortable in acting in this important role as they can rely on the expertise of the corporate trustee. It also adds a neutral party into a volatile family situation.

A corporate trustee brings objectivity, experience, and expertise at a time that is often wrought with emotion. Why leave that burden on your family and friends when a little planning on the front-end can prevent tension, headache, and heartache on the back-end? Prevention just may be what your Doctor ( Juris Doctor) orders.

All pet owners know that their pets are special. Ours are no excep-tion. They are always there to greet you when you come home from school or work, they are always happy to see you even when your day has been tough, they never let you down when life seems to, they get excited over the smallest things like a cup of food, a small biscuit, or a tennis ball. They can change your mood from grumpy to happy just by wagging their tail and looking at you a certain way. They have taught our kids responsibilities and how to treat all animals. Pets, no matter what kind, can always enrich our lives as long as we treat them well.

Proud owners: Rick, Renee, Cameron and Cassie Page

Darra is a Police K9 work dog. She is 6 years old now; we got her 3 years ago after Rick retired his previous K9 and needed a new energetic dog for work. Funny thing is, Darra was origi-nally named “Dora” but Rick did not like the name for a Police K9 so he changed it just a little in order to not confuse the dog and save himself some grief from his fellow co-workers.

Darra is special because she is a Police K9 and goes to work with Rick every day. This dog is full of energy but when she’s home she is able to flip the switch and go into pet mode. She is very protective of this family and loves the kids. You will always find her sleeping in one of their beds at night or in the hall between both kids rooms. One of her favorite things to do at home is dive in the pool. We found that if her toy sinks to the bottom of the pool, Darra will circle it, take a breath and then swim straight down to the bottom of the pool (5 feet) and get her toy. She will do this for hours until you put her inside or kennel her.

We got Bailey 5 years ago, after the passing of a previous dog. We knew we wanted a calm Lab, which is hard to find, so we searched for a while before finding the perfect parents and litter. We knew he was the perfect fit for our family right when we met the owner/breeder and the parents.

Bailey is a very smart dog. He has taught himself to open doors and let himself in or out of the house or into the garage. Bailey stands on his hind legs, uses his paw to push the handle down and then walks the door open or walks the door back, depend-ing on which way he goes. It took us a while to figure out how he was getting outside when we were at work but soon figured it out after pretending to leave and watching him in action. Needless to say, we have had to change a few door handles so he would stay inside the house and the yard.

Anything extraordinary/unique that your Company does: Our biggest passion is protecting families. Only 1 in 4 Americans has created a Will, let alone a comprehensive estate plan. Most people don't realize that the majority of documents in an estate plan provide protection to their loved ones, not only after they die, but also when they are alive.

For example, my mother suffered a major heart attack two days before Christmas. The only reason she is alive is because she was already in the emergency room. (Thank you Mercy Gilbert!) I was panicked when I was waiting to hear whether she needed open heart surgery. But I was also comforted by the fact that I knew exactly what my mom's wishes were because she had created a Living Will. And I knew exactly where her Medical Power of Attorney and HIPAA release documents were if I needed them.

How did you decide on this industry? My Father passed away when I was 19. I have personally seen how planning, or poor planning, can affect loved ones. My biggest heartache is to see clients in need of our probate or crisis services. These services would truly not be necessary if people would take time to plan on the front end. The simple fact is we will all die. Some of us may also become incapacitated later in life. Our mission is to encourage individu-als and families to take the steps to protect themselves and their family. What could more important? We all tell our spouse and children we love them. But actions speak louder than words.

Tell us about your family. I grew up in California and worked my way through college at Disneyland. After graduation, my husband and I moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where I survived "10 winters." We moved to the Valley of the Sun in 2003 to thaw out. My husband, Rick, and I have been married for 20 years and we have a 4-year-old son, William. We enjoy swimming in our pool, family bike rides, playing with our dogs in our parks, action movies, travel, and cooking. I'm also addicted to watching NCIS!

Describe what your Company does: Our team provides education, protection, and peace of mind to individuals and families in the areas of Estate Planning, Medicaid planning, Asset Protection, Bankruptcy, and uncontested Family Law matters. We love educating members of our commu-

nity and often do seminars at churches, social groups, or places of employment on a variety of topics. We also support veterans by supporting programs such as Operation Welcome Home.

What prompted you to start your own business? I thought individuals and families in the southeast valley deserved passionate and trusted legal counsel in their own back yard. I wanted to provide local ser-vices in the community I call home. My clients are my neighbors... and that is how we at Team Cholewka try to treat them.

Portofino

Portofino is a very unique 30 home, gated community with homes ranging from 4500 sf. – 7,000 sf. sitting amongst

the community of Seville Golf & Country Club. Portofino is a charming community with a private gate off of Higley Road as well as a resident’s private gate allowing children to walk directly into the Riggs Elementary playground. Originally used as a citrus orchard, Portofino’s developers carved out 30 “country acre” homesites approximately 10 years ago and the develop-ment was sold out immediately. The citrus trees remain part of the community’s charm yet today and the irrigation is still in place, which is a very distinct difference for these types of large home sites. Many homeowners at Portofino have customized their large backyards installing huge, resort-style pools, full tennis and sport courts, English gardens, children’s play areas, detached garages, ramadas galore, putting greens, ponds and so much more. The home plans in Portofino were developed with families in mind, boasting 4, 5 and 6 bedroom homes with plen-ty of space to spread out and unique center courtyards as the feature that most people remember. Portofino is one of Seville’s exclusive neighborhoods and is mostly sought out for its close proximity to Riggs Elementary, the new Higley retail centers and of course it’s walking distance to one of Arizona’s nicest country clubs, Seville Golf & Country Club.

He motivates you to believe that there are no limits, and that each and every game is ours to win if we have it in our hearts. Most of all, Coach Jason instills the meaning of TEAM. In every drill, in every activity, every time on the ice, he reminds us that we each play an important role that makes up this “team”. When a teammate makes a mistake, we all support that player by being alongside him to pay the price for the mistake. In turn, we all share in the successes of each of our teammates.

The first season I played for Jason was my first year as a travel hockey player. To play travel, each player participates in an intense and stressful four days of tryouts hoping to get noticed. We give it all we got, to show the Coaches what makes us special. This is the time to slip in that wicked shot you’d been practicing. Of course, you have to make sure someone is watch-ing. Coach Jason called me into a private room after the fourth day. It felt like a visit to the principal’s office, only I was excited to be going. Scared, but excited. Coach talked about his style of coaching, his desires and goals for the season and asked me if I was interested in helping him take his team to the state finals. With a handshake, we sealed the deal. How crazy was that? A highly respected coach asked “ME” if I wanted to help him and the team get to the state finals. That was my first season with Coach Jason and the Polar Bears.

The second season with Coach Jason was this past year. I was a bit out of shape. Well not out of shape, but out of Coach Jason’s defini-tion of “shape.” So I had a lot of work to do for tryouts this season. I received the call. Jason was looking for someone like me to join the team. I remember it like it was yesterday how much being a member of the team, meant to coach. And I too was excited to play on his AHU Knights; Peewee AA team this season.

So fast forward to today. We are in the most important tourna-ment ever… Our team is 2-0 (that’s two wins, and zero losses for those who aren’t familiar with sports scoring), we are playing our cross town rivals; the Bob Cats. We’ve played them before. It’s always been a physical game, but this one was different. This one was more important. We both had our reasons for wanting

to win. It was an extremely physical game for a non-checking league. The referees weren’t calling many penalties. That’s pretty typical for tournaments as they want the game to be exciting and fair. A slam in the corner could be heard from across the rink. Wow, they didn’t call that check. Another take down cen-ter ice. Or was that a collision? One minute left in the game. We are winning by one goal. I had the puck against the boards. BANG! What was that, I thought to myself. I was down on the ice. I couldn’t breathe. I collapsed to the ice again. I could hear my dad; who was working the penalty box; yelling “Stay down.” I went back down. What happened?

My teammates were on one knee, coach Jason was leaning over me asking questions to see how I was.” No, that doesn’t hurt.” “Yes, I can wiggle my toes… I think I can get up”, were all my responses to his questions. As Coach helped me from the ice he said “well noth-ing’s changed, you are still ugly”. See how he is, when I should be crying, he has me laughing. Safety first, then let’s get back to work. That’s Coach. My team finished the game as I headed to the hos-pital. It was confirmed, I separated my shoulder, but my team won the game. We are now 3-0 in the tournament!

As I left the hospital with a sling on my arm, we headed to the rink. I was so excited to support my team on the bench even though I wouldn’t be playing. The first period was over; we were only up two to zero. As coach Jason says “A two goal lead is the most dangerous lead in hockey.” Then, the flood gates opened. We put up three more goals. “We can’t stop playing now!” coach exclaimed. We chanted our team name, “Knights, Knights, Knights.” Then the puck dropped and it was time to put up a couple more on the scoreboard. We scored one right out of the gates then the others came following one, by one. I could see how happy coach Jason was. Up with a score of 9-0, I decided at the next whistle to surprise the team. I went into the penalty box and laced up my skates for the awards ceremony. I could help the team carry that banner around the rink with my good arm. I needed to. We are a team. We pay the price together and we celebrate together. Just like Coach taught us. It was hard to say goodbye to my favorite coach and I am thankful for every-thing he has done for me. Every time I am at the ice rink, I will look up to see that banner and be reminded that without Coach, I wouldn’t have the speed, endurance, shooting skills or Sports-manship I have today.

It meant everything, to everyone! To the players that were handpicked from seasons past and present, to our parents who day after day, night after night dragged us to practice, to games, to hockey charity events, and stressful tryouts, and to me. I had a spot all picked out, on my bedroom wall; to display a picture of the team skating on the ice with the winning BANNER. But most of all, it meant everything to Coach! Coach Jason is retiring after this tournament. This is his very last chance to win the banner and to display his team in the rafters at the ice rink for all to see and admire. We needed to get this banner for him!Jason is my favorite coach. He’s the type of coach that pushes you beyond what you consider your limits and your boundaries.

Did you know that 1 out of every 5 children in the US is over-weight and this number continues to rise? Many reasons con-tribute to this but the most common are lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating. We as parents are our kids’ biggest role model and can help with this by packing their lunches every day, keeping our kids active through after school activities and limit-ing the amount of video games they play each week.

vIDeo gameS: • According to a survey conducted on 1,000 5th, 8th & 11th

graders-- boys spend twice as much time playing video games than girls? 23 hours per week versus 12 hours per week.

• Girls consistently prefer classic board games, card-dice games,

quiz-trivia games, arcade games and puzzle games. Boys prefer fighters, shooters, sports, fantasy role-playing games, action adventure games and strategy games.

• Video games and other inactive games are okay in modera-tion. Parents should limit the amount of time their kids are allowed to spend playing the wii, Xbox, Playstation, etc.

exeRCISINg WITh ouR ChIlDReN: • Did you know that keeping our kids active is not only essen-

tial for their physical well-being but also their mental? • Exercising with our children also helps us adults to stay active

as well.• Spending quality time can build lifelong memories. Chil-

dren’s habits are created by their parents and if we can set the example, our kids will follow in our footsteps.

• Some examples that will help kids become more active include walking the dogs, riding bikes, swimming, playing active games like dodgeball, wiffle ball, tag, hide & go seek, etc.

eaTINg healThIeR• Preparation and planning is the key to healthy eating. Plan

your menu and do all of your shopping for the week on Sun-day. This ensures you have all fresh ingredients.

• Keep the lunch healthy. Stay away from chips, chocolate spreads and candies. Sugar can make it hard for kids to focus while in the classroom.

• Make sure to pack a balanced lunch with protein, healthy fats/carbs, fruits and veggies.

• Don’t forget an ice pack to keep the food cool, especially in this Arizona heat and lots of water.

• Make it easy to eat. Bite size sandwiches and wraps are always best. Keep it small and simple.

Where do you teach: I am the owner and director as well as one of the lead teachers at Seeds of Knowledge Preschool at Seville Golf and Country Club. In this wonderful phonics based program, little ones learn the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors and many more preschool concepts through fun activi-ties, music, exercise, skill building work, crafts and play. Our teachers promote fun while learning in their classrooms and we pride ourselves as being an affordable community friendly preschool where friendships are made and families come together. We don’t only work in Seville we live here too. We truly care about the kids and our families because they literally are our neighbors and friends. We welcome families to come in and be a part of our classroom whenever they would like and always have open lines of communication with parents. We really are your old fashion neighborhood Preschool! Seeds of Knowledge is a state licensed preschool currently enjoying its tenth year of operation. All of the teachers are degreed educa-tors with years of teaching experience and a true appreciation for preschoolers! We are happily tucked away in the beautiful Seville Sports Club and currently offer many class options for Preschoolers 2 ½ - 5 years old.

What Prompted You To Become A Teacher: I knew I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I received my degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois Univer-sity in 1989. Throughout college I taught at Sunny Meadow Preschool in the 4yr. old program. After graduation I taught at Marion Hills Elementary school for three years before starting a personal training business with my husband, where I was able to teach exercise and nutrition to my clients. Although our busi-ness was very rewarding I am really happy about my decision to return to the teaching field with such a great staff of teachers.

Do You Have A Favorite Subject You Teach: I love to teach Art! Art teaches so many skills like colors, shapes, spatial con-cepts, writing, cutting, even math and science in a fun and cre-

ative way. I love being creative! I am usually crafting, designing, decorating or coming up with some new preschool craft.

Tell Us About You: I grew up in Chicago and moved to Seville just about 10 years ago. I have two daughters ages 16 and 13 and have been married for 22 years to my husband, Ken.

Can Shabby Really Be Chic?

and faded old chintz sofas, curtains, and old paintwork resided. The early forms of shabby chic were rather grand however; now, it has evolved into taking inspiration from this style and melding it in with the new. These inspirations range from 18th century Swedish painted decoration, French Chateaus as well as heavy influences from Mediterranean cultures such as Provence, Tuscany and Greece.

Recycling old furniture and fabrics is an important aspect of this look. Shabby chic items are often heavily painted through the years, with many layers showing through revealing time-worn areas. Today, this style is imitated by using faux painting techniques and distressing. Elaborate furniture appliqués depict-ing flower swags and garlands, cherubs, as well as the addition of mismatched knobs or handles are often added. Fabrics are inspired by old French linens and tend to be cottons ranging in color from pure whites, ecru, worn out pastel colors, floral pat-terns, cotton ticking patterns, and earth tones, are all typical of shabby chic style. It is a soft, relaxed, feminine, romantic style of decorating that looks comfortable, warm and inviting.

Many Antique (also known as vintage) pieces such as pie safes, jugs, milk cans and baskets, tin signs and jelly cupboards are popular in shabby chic décor. Hints from French-style interior design often appear in shabby chic homes in the forms of Roco-co-style lighting fixtures, furniture or wall paneling.

The original shabby chic interiors were usually considered in themselves works of art. For those that love the comfort of history and the hidden beauty in strange old pieces, this is the style for you.

There has been a recent boom in the desire for things that are antique, vintage inspired and shabby chic. For many, those words mean old, worn and smells like grandma’s house! How-ever, there is an art to this look and it is far from grandmas!

This style originated in Great Britain, and is reminiscent of the type of décor once found in large country homes where worn

in the Middle EastFOuR WEEKS Backpacking

tour&travel

A backpacking adventure in the Middle East can be eye-opening, exciting, and at times challenging. As you explore sites of immense religious, cultural and his-torical significance, you will further your education and gain insights into other less familiar cultures and ways of life. Backpacking through the Middle East is an adventure and you're likely to experience some incredible hospitality, sample delectable cuisine and meet fascinating people along the way.

Fly into Istanbul in Turkey, a city at the crossroads of East and West. The perfect introduction to the Middle East, Istanbul is both westernized and familiar, while at the same time it's exotic and enchanting.

Cappadocia: The natural beauty of Central Turkey is breathtak-ing. Goreme is a good base for a few days sampling delicious Turkish cuisine, walking through the spectacular landscape of "fairy chimney" rock formations and exploring churches cut in rock by the early Christians.

Aleppo: Syria probably contains almost everything that comes to mind when you think of the Middle East: legendary Arabic hospitality, mouth-watering mezze, conservative Islam and rich history and culture. The people there are some of the friendliest in the world, and to really get a feel for the place, spend some time in the cafes and markets (souks).

Damascus: A must on any Middle Eastern traveler’s itinerary. A few days can be spent in the coffee shops and souks of Damascus, sipping intense Arabic coffee to the sound of the Muslim call to prayer. The Umayyad Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the world and the architectural beauty is awe-inspiring.

Palmyra: If you're into ruins, you won't want to skip Palmyra. These ruins of one of the ancient world's most important cen-ters of culture are located at an oasis in the Syrian Desert, and you can get there by bus or taxi from Damascus.

Jerusalem: The old city contains sites of huge historic and cultural significance to Jews, Christians and Muslims. A visit to Jerusalem provides an opportunity to explore sites of historic and religious interest, while also gaining an understanding of the background and the issues surrounding the present-day conflict.

Dead Sea: Easily accessible from Jerusalem, Ein Gedi is an oasis on the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth. Due to the salt content, the human body will float on the Dead Sea, an experience not to be missed.

Tel Aviv: Known as “the city that doesn't stop” because of its reputation for partying, Tel Aviv is the heart of secular Israel and the economic and commercial center. The highlight is the sandy Mediterranean coastline and the fantastic beach scene where you can relax for a day or two before boarding your flight home.

Assuming you travel independently as a backpacker, this 4 week itinerary through the Middle East is likely to cost in the region of $1500-$2000 if you travel and share rooms with a partner and in the region of $2400-$2700 if you travel on your own.

INCReaSe aWaReNeSS — When it comes to financial fraud and scams, many seniors think: “It can’t happen to me.” But the facts suggest otherwise: Some 20 percent of Americans over the age of 65 admit to having been victimized by financial swindles, according to a survey by the non-profit Investor Protection Trust. Let your loved ones know that no one in their age group is immune to financial predators.

guaRD pRIvaTe INFoRmaTIoN — Ask your parents or grandparents to not divulge personal information over the

phone. In fact, urge them to get caller ID, if they don’t have it already, and tell them that if they don’t recognize the number, don’t answer. Legitimate callers are more likely to leave mes-sages than scammers.

Don’t send money. Exhort your parents or grandparents to never wire money to a random account — no exceptions.

IgNoRe “lImITeD-TIme oFFeRS” — Your loved ones should ignore callers, mailers or emails that demand they act imme-diately. These offers are often overblown at best and may be fraudulent at worst.

DoN’T TRuST “No RISk” oFFeRS — Financial offers that sound too good to be true are likely just that — untrue. Legitimate investments carry both potential risks and rewards.

avoID “DeBT-SeTTlemeNT” ClaImS — If your older loved ones have debt problems, they may be especially susceptible to offers that claim to “clear up” all their debts. But there’s no quick fix to this problem and any caller who claims otherwise is likely being deceitful. Encourage your parents or grandparents to discuss their debt situation with an honest, professional debt counselor or a financial advisor.

Here’s one more thing you can do to help your parents or grandparents avoid financial fraud: If they don’t already work with a trusted, qualified financial professional, introduce them to one. If your parents have a relationship with such a profes-sional, they will be less likely to listen to any questionable, unso-licited offers than if they were trying to manage their finances on their own.

You’re in a good position to know how much, or how little, help your elderly loved ones may need in terms of avoiding financial abuse. So be willing to do whatever it takes to help them enjoy their retirement years comfortably.

It’s unfortunate, but true: The elderly population may be the most vulnerable group in our society. In fact, in an effort to call attention to the problems of physical, emotional and financial abuse of the elderly, the united Nations has designated June 15 as World elder abuse awareness Day. If you have older parents, or even grandparents, can you do to anything to help prevent them from being victimized, especially with regard to their finances?

actually, there’s a lot you can do. First and foremost, you need to maintain good communications and a trusting relationship with your older family members. as long as these elements are present, you should feel free to make the following suggestions:
