Sewer / Stormwater Overflow Monitoring and Alarm System

Every water authority has experienced the issue of a sewer overflow at some stage. Spills can now be prevented and blockagesdetected early with the sewer overflow monitoring and alarm

device called Blok-Aid®. How does it work? By installing Blok-Aid®

in sewer or stormwater manholes, high sewer and stormwater levels can be detected as the level rises. An alarm is then automati-cally activated which identifies the manhole either through theSupervisory Control and Acquisition Data (SCADA) system ordirect to a mobile phone or email address. Field maintenance canthen be dispatched to rectify the situation before a spill occurs.With a 10 year battery life and the ability to configure the unit

from your desktop, Blok-Aid® is low voltage and completelysealed, so not only do you have peace of mind that your networkis being monitored, but the device is certified Intrinsically Safe (IS).

Blok-Aid® helps to insure against Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) events and allows Sewer Managers to respond.Blok-Aid® is so fast acting that the contact closure could operate Bascule gates downstream to prevent disaster. InKuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Blok-Aid® was used to control the flood gates for the Smart Tunnel - a 43.3 Ft (13.2Meter) diameter tunnel that is used for both auto traffic and as a tunnel for flood water in storm events. InQueens, New York City, Blok-Aid® is currently being used to predict Storm Surge and unusual tidal events likeHurricane Sandy. In Singapore a network of 950 Blok-Aid® devices were installed. InstallationThe main unit is installed on the sidewall within the manhole, as close tothe surface of the entrance, withoutinterfering with manhole access andclosing of the manhole cover.The float switches must NOT bepositioned within the pipe flow,which may result in improper opera-tions and even possible damage tothe float switches as horizontalforces in the flow will cause thefloats to knock against the concretemanhole walls.

Operation1. Once the water level starts to

rise, the float will start to tilt. (H1float switch is referenced in thethird example above).

2. When the water level reachesthe top of the cable weight, thefloat switch reaches its thresholdtilt angle.

3. When the float threshold tiltangle is maintained for approxi-mately 30 seconds or more,ALARM STATE will be reached, aText Message (SMS) will be sentfrom the unit to pre-defined Cellphone number(s) at the STPSCADA BaseStation.

4) BaseStation will then process andbroadcast the relevant informa-tion to the assigned STP staff.

5) When the water level subsidesand float tilt angle drops belowthreshold, RETURN TO STATEwill be reached, another TextMessage (SMS) will be sent.
