From Fr. Jon Kirby
Back to Epicureanism?
(Adapted from: “Paul’s witness” by Ruth Glendhill. An inter-view with N.T. Wright. 2 JUNE 2018 | THE TABLET | 13)
“Unless the West reconnects with its ancient Chris-tian narrative it faces catastrophe.” These words of wisdom are from one of the greatest New Testament scholars of our age, Tom Wright (N.T. Wright). He is the former Anglican Bishop of Durham, professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the Univer-sity of St Andrews in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the author of over 80 books. He was raised “in the con-text of middle Anglicanism”. He is forthright, engag-ing and at times passionate as he expresses his alarm to Ruth Glendhill at the direction that our society is taking. “Ten years ago,” he says, “when Pope Bene-dict addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, he said the contemporary post enlightenment secular world was – and this is my phrase, not his – living on borrowed time. He pointed out that the modern human rights movement is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and if you cut off those roots the fruits will go bad, and society will collapse into a cacophony of competing special interest argu-ments. And that’s exactly the point we’ve reached now.” “WE LACK a clear idea of what a modern civil soci-ety ought to look like. And that’s dangerous. Europe has torn itself apart twice in the past hundred years. I don’t think we can say that secularism is the great gospel that is necessarily going to triumph. On the contrary, it seems to me that secularism, if you’re not careful, leads to a pretty dark place. It’s the same dark place that much ancient philosophy was in be-fore the arrival of Christianity. Because, basically, secularism is a modern form of Epicureanism.” Wright, the attentive teacher, explains. “Epicurus was the ancient Greek philosopher who believed that pleasure was the greatest good. And here’s the inter-esting thing: Epicureanism says, if the gods exist, they are a long way away; they don’t bother about us so we don’t need to bother about them. What we have to do is just make ourselves as comfortable as we can. And that’s fine if you are reasonably well off and have got good slaves and a nice little vineyard. But for most people, life is very different.” “Western Europe and North America has been an Epicurean society for the last 200 years,” Wright goes on. “Thomas Jefferson said, ‘I am an Epicure-an.’ The Epicureans were never a majority in ancient Greece, but they have become a majority in the Western world. And, as Benedict pointed out, we have been living on borrowed time, feasting on the fruits of other people’s labor. But the worm has turned. Now the people who we have exploited and
ignored are – quite literally – being washed up on our shores. It is becoming clear that our freedoms and our sophisticated modern comforts have been purchased at a terrible cost for people in many other parts of the world.” “When Paul talked about Jesus as Lord,” Wright goes on, “people’s lives changed. It is too easy to forget how much was changed for the better. I studied an-cient history before I studied theology. And the an-cient Roman world was a pretty brutal place.” Wright reminds me that many of the things we tend to take for granted – that it is right for a society to care for the poor and the sick, and to provide children with an education – are a legacy of a Christian civilization that, in turn, had picked up the Jewish imperative and translated it into something for everybody. In a sense, it was Judaism for the masses.” He says, “again and again through history, it’s been remarkable how, from a Christian point of view, God has raised up people to speak new words. Think of Pope Francis. Nobody saw that coming. Think of Mother Teresa. Nobody saw that coming.” If Paul were to come back today, Wright observes, one of the things that would most shock and alarm him would be the disunity of Christians, particularly in the Unit-ed States, where there are literally thousands of dif-ferent Christian denominations. But what would astonish him more is the insouciance of Christians towards their bitter divisions. “If the Church is not united, why on earth should the world take any notice of what it says?” Wright asks. The root of the prob-lem, he believes, is that “we in the western Churches have, since the eighteenth century, colluded with the Enlightenment idea that religion is a purely private matter, and that it has nothing to do with public life.” “We simply have no narrative to make sense of this,” Wright says. “When the Arab spring happened, there was an assumption among some in the West that all that was needed was to topple a few dictators and then a tolerant, liberal democracy would somehow spring up automatically. The last seven years have shown that that’s simply not how things work. Life is more complicated than that.” “Unless we reconnect with the ancient Christian narrative,” he says, “we will never understand what is happening, let alone to come through to the other side.” “I think if we said to Paul now, looking back in retro-spect: ‘How did you turn the world upside down?’ he would instantly say: ‘It wasn’t me, it was Jesus who did it.’ What Paul is doing is making it happen, mak-ing it work.” Regarding the IT revolution as a vehicle for Christian evangelization, Tom says, “What does the trick, in communicating in Christian terms, is meeting a real human being, who can look at you and pray with you and hug you and smile with you and weep with you.”

Daily Prayer for Our Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
