Dear Black Diamond Members: As June has arrived many of you are traveling. Matt has put together an informative article this month that lets you know many of the things that are going on from an agronomical perspective. We are committed to improving the golf course conditions, not just short term but long term healthy turf conditions. As summer has arrived so has the slow season for the clubhouse. Brad and I will be starting a “Gold Standard” training program for all F & B staff members. It is our goal to provide the ultimate service in the dining room for our members. He will also be putting together an F&B member survey to get your thoughts on your food and beverage experience and what your food and beverage needs are. Traffic is still continuing at the Welcome Center, if you see some new faces walking around, stop and introduce yourself and welcome them. We had one new transfer member this past month Mr. & Mrs. Michael Brough. Let’s give them a warm Black Diamond welcome.

Dear Black Diamond Members,

On behalf of the IMG Junior Golf Tour, I want to thank you for your hospitality in hosting our Tour Championship on the Quarry May 17-18.

As the premier event on our schedule and the capstone on a tournament season that saw 18 events across four different states, the Quarry provided a truly memorable setting to close out the season.

In seven years of running national-level junior golf events, I can sincerely say that Black Diamond is one of my favorite tournament venues. From the challenge and great condition of the golf course to the hospitality of the staff and membership on site, you all have a lot to be proud of. Our staff had the pleasure to interact with quite a few members at the event and everyone was gracious, hospitable and genuinely interested in the event.

Special thanks to those members who graciously volunteered their time to assist with shuttling the players between holes!

Our staff, members and parents truly appreciate the club’s continued support of junior golf!

The IMG Junior Golf Tour hosted the 2014 Tour Championship which took place on May 17-18, where it named

Players of the Year in four age divisions. The event fielded 78 players from 12 states and 14 countries, battling for the coveted division titles. In the Boys 15-18 division, Chile’s Claudio Correa, a South Florida commit, carded a final round 68 (-4) to complete a four-stroke win over Kavan Eubank of Bradenton, Fla. Correa finished with a total four-under 140, but it was not enough to stake his claim to the Boys 15-18 Player of the Year honors, which went to Spencer Schultz of Bradenton, Fla. Schultz finished fourth, but it was just enough to hang on for Player of the Year by a slim 30-point margin. On his way to becoming Player of the Year, Schultz was a model of consistency with seven top-five finishes on the year with one victory at Laurel Oak in January.

In the Girls 15-18 division, Erica Stoner of Ocala, Fla. edged out Jacqueline Bendrick of Mercer Island, Wash. in a one-hole sudden-death playoff to win the Girls 15-18 division. Stoner and Bendrick completed regulation tied at six-over 150, and the win marked Stoner’s second of the year after earning her first win at Victoria Hills in March. Stoner would finish fourth overall in the Player of the Year standings. The runaway winner of the Girls 15-18 division was Thailand’s Jaravee Boonchant who tallied five wins and three runner-up finishes in nine starts.

The Boys 11-14 division at Black Diamond went to Max Coutsolioutsos of Lakewood Ranch, Fla. with solid rounds of 76, 72 to notch his first-career Tour victory in his first start. Jason Jin of Windermere, Fla. finished in fourth place at the event, but took the Boys 11-14 Player of the Year honors with a massive lead in the points standings. On the year, Jin notched five wins and three runner-up finishes in nine starts.

In the Girls 11-14 division, Nancy Lian of Lake Mary, Fla. rolled through the competition with a three-over 147 total. The win marked Lian’s first of the year in

her third-career Tour start. Lian’s win, however, would not affect the top of the standings in the division where Australia’s Caitlin Cotterill stood alone with an insurmountable lead to become the Girls 11-14 Player of the Year. Through the year, Cotterill finished in the top-three in all nine of her starts with two wins and four runner-up finishes.

A Message from Matt DiMaseDirector of Golf Course Maintenance

Attention Members:

As we turn the calendar to June, this is the time of year when “transition” is in full swing. On the courses we are seeing very little rye grass left and the Bermuda is beginning to fill in.

Below is an update on several items I want to mention to everyone:

1. New pump station has been installed for the Quarry and Ranch Courses. This includes 4 new 75 horsepower motors and pumps as well as all new assemblies.

2. We began Curfew treatment in May. This is a soil fumigant to treat Nematodes. The Highlands Tees and Fairways were completed May 16th and the Ranch Tees and Fairways were completed on May 29th. The Quarry is scheduled in June.

3. We are in the final phases of a revised water permit from the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

4. We are officially in compliance regarding our old permitted ground water usage. Black Diamond was out of compliance dating back to 2009, and since my arrival we have had to reduce our usage significantly to show an annual average of less then what we were permitted to make up for the overage.

I also want to mention the Highland Fairways in this newsletter. First, I am aware of the visible dirt and bare spots. I intentionally sprayed out the Rye Grass, Poa Annua, and any other weed back in late April. This was to eliminate any future Poa Annua from reproducing thus producing more seed heads which will set in the soil and possibly cause an outbreak next year. Historically Poa Annua has been a problem at Black Diamond and we are working with top agronomists and University Professors who support the decision to “spray-out” our over-seed like we did. We will begin spraying pre-emergent’s earlier this year for the Poa Annua and that will help with the control in the fall and winter.

Following the herbicide application we applied fertilizer, completed Curfew, and then fertilized again. I am happy with the results and the end goal is to have a healthy stand of Bermuda during the summer months and going into over-seed with a reduction of Poa Annua in the late fall throughout the winter.

We will continue to work our plan to improve course conditions. We have worked diligently on insect control since my arrival and I have seen populations of fire ants, mole crickets, and grubs reduced. This is due to the slitting in of the insecticide around Feb/March. We became the largest treated golf course in the State of Florida this year and will continue to treat 300+ acres annually. We also completed back to back

summers with nematode treatments on Fairways and Tees on all courses and our last Nematode Assay shows a significant reduction. Our greens programs have improved the overall turf conditions on the greens. With a full growing season on all greens this summer we are seeing problematic areas begin to improve. We did have several areas where we needed to do repair work. With our 10 acres of greens on property, we “patched” or sodded less then 2000 square feet and areas are mending well. We had mechanical damage on 2 greens which were sodded (17 Quarry and 13 Quarry), and had a disease break out on the Ranch Course causing us to replace turf that did not recover after treatment.

We will continue to work on projects this summer that include DRA clean up, tree trimming, and reconstruction of drainage on several holes.

tion We have entered our summer Holiday Tournament season here at Black Diamond. These

tournaments are always fun as their “cookout” flavor and all the red, white and blue attire make for festive participation. So although our numbers shrink when our “snowbirds”

leave we still maintain our sense of family.

And it’s not just the seasons that change. We now have a brand new way to look at our Black Diamond golf courses thanks to the newly designated hole allocations.

The BDLGA invited Skip Johnson, Chairman of the Black Diamond Handicap Committee and Pam Vlcko, a member of his committee as well as our BDLGA, to address us with a presentation on May 20th to help our members understand the process and reasoning behind these new “ratings.” For those of you who were not present…we took notes! If you have questions we can e-mail you a copy of what we learned.

Our BDLGA is here to serve our members so please remember that suggestions and requests are always welcomed and considered and are never dismissed out of hand.

Black Diamond Foundation College of Central Florida Scholarship Recipients

Thank You for “Making a Difference”

Over the years, Black Diamond Foundation has donated over $100,000 to the College of Central Florida (CCF) specifically to provide scholarships for deserving Citrus County students who need financial assistance to complete their post-secondary education. There’s no better way to describe the difference your Foundation contributions make in the lives of these students than hear it directly from them. Below are heartfelt thank-you notes from CCF’s 2014 Black Diamond Foundation scholarship recipients.

The Black Diamond Foundation scholarship has been a huge blessing to me. Thanks to you, I have been able to complete the schooling required to become an EMT, and I am currently taking classes in order to become a paramedic. This scholarship is the reason that I am going to be able to change lives and help people. I am truly grateful. ~Trevor V.

Attending a college close to home has worked out for me because it gives me the opportunity to stay connected to my family. Recipe of the Month - Chef KennyGrilled Flank Steak with an Avocado & Hearts of Palm Salad

Serves 8Steak

6 cloves garlic, minced1/2 small hot pepper, such as jalapeño or serrano, minced2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil1/4 teaspoon kosher salt2 pounds flank steak

Salad1 head Boston Bibb lettuce (or for crisper taste, Hearts of Romaine)1/2 cup halved cherry tomatoes1/2 cup chopped red bell peppers1 can/jar of hearts of palm, chopped1 ripe avocado, chopped2 green onions, chopped

Cilantro Vinaigrette

1. Preheat grill to high. 2. To prepare steak: Combine garlic, hot pepper, oil and salt in a small bowl.

Rub the mixture on both sides of steak. Marinate for 30 minutes.3. Meanwhile, add chopped lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, hearts of palm and

avocado to a salad bowl.4. Combine all of the first seven vinaigrette ingredients in a small food

processor and blend until everything is very finely chopped. Gradually add the olive oil and blend until smooth. Salt and pepper to taste.

5. Grill the steak for 4-6 minutes per side until medium rare. Allow to rest for 10 minutes and slice thin against the grain.

6. Toss the hearts of palm salad with the vinaigrette and top each serving with grilled steak.
