Happenings
The weather in January has picked up where December left off. It was said that this was the coldest December on record and one only has to see the 19 days that were in the 30s and created frost delays and sent many back indoors to find other recreation activities.
In December and January we took a few of the days to clean up some of the areas on the 15th hole of the Quarry and removed some of the more invasive plant species which are considered undesirable to this area. Trees such as the Chinese Tallowtree, also called Popcorntree were removed and the cogongrasses were mowed down along with the other wild flower plants. Our plan is to let these areas come back in the growing season and the wild flower population that has occurred naturally will come back fuller. We have also cleaned up along the lake to open the shoreline to anyone who might want to go down and cast a line in the water.
The cogongrass will return here as well, but I do feel that we made some improvement removing the tallowtree and a lot of vines that were choking out other vegetation.
Course conditions are like the temperatures. When we have the frost and severe cold weather even the overseeding shrivels up and the cart traffic patterns show up more. The greens are great if you like speed and not so good if you don’t have a smooth putting stroke. We have added some seed to the greens to try to increase the density slightly. Unfortunately, the weather has not cooperated and the seed didn’t germinate. I look forward to some slightly warmer temperatures when the overseeding will tiller out more and become a bit more aggressive. We can always obtain speed through our management practices of the turf.

Black Diamond Rider Cup 2011
All Black Diamond Members are invited to sign up for their choice of country. The United States Guys and Dolls will be dressed in their traditional red, white and blue and the Irish Saints and Sinners will be dressed in green, orange and white.
There will be four nine-hole matches: Scramble, Team Better Ball, Chapman Two Ball and Individual matches. All matches will be with partners of the same gender and facing opponents with similar handicaps. Tee times will be 10:00 am to 2:00 pm each day.
On Wednesday, March 16th there will be dinner menus featuring selections of Irish and USA cuisine open to participants and all Members of the Club and their guests. Several selections of Irish brew and Irish whiskey will be available for the traditional celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
On Thursday, March 17th the Rider Cup dinner will be held for all participants and any non-playing spouses. The entry fee includes Thursday dinner. Menu and cost will be posted on the sign up sheet. The prize for the winning team is the raising of their national flag by their opponents while singing the winning team’s themed anthem.
This is a fun event for all members of Black Diamond with dress and cart decoration in country theme and colors. Sign up sheets will go up February 11th. Members who are out of town may phone the Golf Shop after that date to place their entry.

We want to extend a special thank you to Faeth Houle, our Hospitality Chair. Her creative and fun centerpieces greet us as we come off the course, particularly on a recent cold Tuesday.
Some of our BDLGA members volunteered to help with the Future Collegian World Tour. From January 14-16, 81 players (15 girls, 66 boys) from 14 countries were playing our courses. Two Black Diamond members had family in the field. Matthew Cichoski, the grandson of Judy and Steve Tanner, and John Burns, the son of Leslie and John Burns, were playing in this event.
Don’t forget our current food drive continuing through April in support of SOS – Serving Our Savior.

The Black Diamond Investment Club announces the Winners of Their 2010 Market Forecasting Contest.

In January 2010, the Black Diamond Investment Club (BDIC) members put their market forecasting skills to the test. Each member forecasted what the end-of-year numbers would be on the following indices: DOW, S&P 500, NASDAQ, OIL, GOLD, 3 month Treasury Bill, 10 year Treasury Note and the Prime Rate.
A putt-off was used to break the tie for third place, with Kevin Conway out-putting Kay Funkhouser, Ed Baltensberger and Bill Bristol.
An annual contribution to the Black Diamond Foundation was made with the contest winnings and some of the trading profits from the Club.
Since inception in 2002, the Club has outperformed its Blended Index.
The Club has openings for new members. Anyone interested in joining the Club should contact Kevin Conway or any Club members.

Thank You SPECIAL GESTURE BY BLACK DIAMOND RESIDENTSIt has come to our attention from friends of Citrus Memorial that part-time Black Diamond residents, Bob and Mona Ketcham, do much more than come down and enjoy the warm weather, sunshine and golfing. When not up North running their family business they spend time here and have also gotten involved charitably with Black Diamond’s community partner Citrus Memorial Health System.
It was reported they enjoyed and were very impressed with a tour of Citrus Memorial’s comprehensive Heart Center when delivering a donation. The donation resulted from the sale of an extra piece of land they owned in Black Diamond and had auctioned off for charitable benefit to the hospital.

The Black Diamond Jr. Volunteer Corps is coming up on our first anniversary. We have truly come a long way and are excited to think where this next year will take us. Together as a group we have logged an estimated 260 hours of community service. When you consider that we are a small group of Middle and High School students, we play sports, take music lessons, have part-time jobs, are involved with other groups, attend church, all along keeping up with our studies and our grades, this is no small feat! Our group was featured in the St. Petersburg Times, Citrus Sunday edition in November. The article noted that we were “a group of youth excited to lend a helping hand to feed those less fortunate.” That goes right along with our Mission Statement, “to make a positive difference within our community.” We are always interested in new ideas on how we can make an impact on those in need. It’s not all work though. We do take time out to have fun. We recently went
on a Geocache hunt in the Withlacoochee Forest. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. On our hike, we explored caves, enjoyed the outdoors and each other’s company. Oh, we also located the cache! We picked through the loot and then left a treasure behind. As part of the Geocaching mission (Cache in Trash out), we collected two garbage bags of litter left behind in the forest. We had a blast! Our groups’ pet project is “Blessings in a Backpack.” We volunteer one week a month to fill backpacks for Hernando and Homosassa Elementary students that participate in the Federal Assisted Free Lunch and Breakfast Program. “Blessings in a Backpack” is run by volunteers and sole purpose is to provide Citrus County Elementary children with weekend nutritious food. You may recall the “orange flyers” in your paper boxes. The Peanut Butter Drive that the BDJVC put on, netted 440 pounds! We supplied
peanut butter for the year, thanks to the residents of Black Diamond. On Saturday, April 2, 2011 we will co-host the First Annual “Blessings in a Backpack” 5K Run/1 mile Walk Event in Hernando. Together with Citrus County “Blessings in a Backpack,” our goal is to raise the $80.00 that will feed a child for an entire school year, for every eligible elementary school child in Citrus County. 100% of funds raised are used to purchase food to fill the backpacks. If there is any interest in sponsorship, registering for the race or even just getting involved with the volunteer work that will be necessary to make this event successful, please contact us at: [email protected]. Trees, Sunrises, Sunsets & Frosty Mornings First trees – we planted 2 new red bud trees in January in the teeing area of #6 Highlands. This brings us to 33 new trees in the last 2 years. All are going to improve the courses and will not affect the growth of grasses on the tees and greens. All of these trees have been donated by members from either our Audubon funds or memorials from golfing groups. Our thanks to all. Second are some sunrise, sunset and frosty pictures which you might enjoy. I am out there every morning and evening enjoying these beautiful gifts from God and encourage you to do the same.

On February 17th the book group will be discussing Ian McEwan’s Solar at 4:00 pm in the boardroom. This humorous novel chronicles a series of catastrophes in the personal life of Michael Beard who then decides to harness the power of the sun to save the planet.
