Krieger, founded in 1946, is well established in theproduction of mixing & homogenising equipment.In the early sixties, a concept combining two speedmixing and homogenising in one machine was pio-neered by Krieger. Three Independent Mixing Elements A pioneering innovation is the homogeniser whichrotates clockwise and anticlockwise, thus changingthe product flow in the vessel and creating a vortex.Powder and other ingredients can be added from thetop and is then directly drawn into the clockwise andanticlockwise rotating homogeniser, resulting in anoptimal dispersion of the added ingredients.

The Molto Mat has three mixing elements:

The outer agitating arm, fitted with wall scrapers, ensures a per-fect heat transfer from vessel wall to product.

The counter-rotating inner agitating tool. This can be a paddlemixer or a high speed shear blade.

A homogeniser based on the rotor-stator principle. Differentdesigns are available (low shear/high flow, high shear/low flow,variable gaps, etc.)

To achieve the ultimate mixing possibilities, all three mixing ele-ments can be driven individually with separate speed controls.

The Krieger Molto Mat comes with counter-rotating agitatingtools which are placed in the centre of the vessel. Due to theirspecial design the tools generate a "controlled product flow".This guarantees that every particle of the product follows a pre-determined flow pattern the same number of times within a giventime. Eccentrically fitted agitators are unable to provide a guar-anteed flow pattern.

The homogeniser reduces the size of the product particles to afew microns. The Krieger homogeniser guarantees superior quality, long product life, and a viscosity level that remains thesame in each production batch if required.

Vessel DesignOne of the key features of the new Molto Mat rangeis the entirely "crevice free interior" and the use of"smooth cleanable angles". The crevice free interiorand the smooth angles provide a perfect processingenvironment for cleaning and sterilisation proce-dures.

CleaningAn integrated CIP system has the advantage that thetime needed to prepare the machine for the nextbatch is minimised and therefore valuable productiontime is saved.

To get the most out of your Molto Mat’s cleaning abilities, Krieger offers a wide variety of CIP add-onslike:

● Recirculation pipework and pumps● Detergent preparation tanks and dosage pumps● Water preparation tanks ● CIP software● Instruments to measure water quality

These features can be combined to form a cus-tomised CIP system.

Water consumption is low due to the special CIPdesign. The CIP system is controled by PLC resultingin a fast and efficient system that can be entirely validated.In order that you achieve best cleaning results,Krieger provides you with the necessary informationsuch as type of detergent to be used for your product,use of pre-rinses, required wash time, and best pro-cessing temperature.

Sterile ProcessingDuring the last few years, Krieger – in cooperationwith several renowned customers – has gained someexcellent experience in the field of sterile processing. Highly sterile processes require that a guaranteedsterilisation temperature is maintained for a definedperiod in the whole production system and that therisk of product contaminations through periodical sys-

tem errors in the mechanical processing cycle is elim-inated or clearly indicated (e.g. particles from usageof seals, dirt particles in small gaps, sterility leaks inthe cooling water of mechanical seals, etc.). WithKrieger’s technology, the Molto Mat can easily beupgraded to process products in these highly sterileconditions.

Controlled Single Sealing Point

The Krieger counter-rotating gearbox with integratedCIP and SIP system reduces the critical sealing pointsencountered in processing equipment to only one.This remaining sealing point has two mechanicalseals and can be fully sterilised. The mechanicalseals can run dry with special high-speed mechanicalseals or can be cooled with a sterile liquid.

The entire sterilisation process of this gearbox can bemonitored and documented before and during theproduction process providing the highest "sterilityassurance level" available on the market today.

To facilitate the opera-tion of the machines andto avoid operator errors,Krieger mixing &homogenising systemscan be controlled by PLC.Different recipes with allthe specific require-ments necessary for theproduction process can be stored on the machine’sPLC or on a connected computer. The CIP and SIPprocesses can be integrated with the option to cleanthe machine overnight. Different automation plat-forms can be chosen in order to integrate best withthe customer’s existing automation philosophy.New is the PC based recipe handler and data logger.After establishing a link between the PLC of themachine and a remote PC, complete recipes can bewritten and filed in the recipe handler software. Theselected recipes can then be transferred to the PLCof the Molto Mat where they are available for the oper-ator. With the link in place the PC functions as a datalogger during the production process, registering alloperations, alarms and manual operator interven-tions for each processed batch (executed recipe).

The recorded information is compatible with MSOffice® software. The recipe handler and data loggerare a real support for the production of validation documents.

Automation/PLC Controls – Recipe Handler & Data Logger

Molto Mat LinkAnother useful help in the scale-up and validationprocess is provided by the Molto Mat Link. The MoltoMat Link is a software that enables the transfer of thedata captured or produced by means of the recipehandler from one machine to another PC (mostly overa network) which can write this data to the PLC of thenext machine. As such the databases produced inresearch and laboratory can directly be transferred toproduction machines by means of the Molto Mat Link.Due to our Molto Mat Link, Krieger customers canfacilitate the scale-up process and save valuable timein the validation process.

Powder Feed StationThe powder feed station is specially built to add largequantities of powder to liquids and semi-solids. Thesystem brings the product flow into a jet stream inwhich the powder is continuously injected. The pow-der is then carried off in particles in the jet stream

and is moisturised simultaneously. The mobile sta-tion can be used with every Molto Mat or with sepa-rate vessels. The powder feed station is the ideal toolfor smooth and fast powder introduction with exactlyrepeatable results and colours. Both liquids and pow-ders can be added.Important applications are pharmaceutical syrupsand suspensions, decorative cosmetics, and a widerange of food applications.

External Homogeniser CVTR

The in-line homogeniser CVTR homogenises the prod-uct flow by creating a heavy turbulence in which theproduct is bounced back and forth between the CVTRhousing and an interlocked toothed face plate. Thisintense product movement onto the specially shapededges of the face plate creates a superblyhomogenised product of which the resulting drop sizecan be exactly defined by varying the space betweenhomogeniser housing and face plate.

In comparison with traditional external homogenisersthat cut the product (rotor/stator principle) the CVTRworks on a natural principle "action and reaction" todecrease the particle size of the product. The CVTRis therefore ideal to process shear sensitive prod-ucts. As the construction has no motors and specialsealing points, the CVTR is the ideal homogeniser forsterile applications. The external homogeniser CVTRcan be used in a recirculation pipework with any exist-ing vessel, together with the powder feed unit ortogether with the Molto Mat in controlled single seal-ing point design.

In the large Jet Feed Injector the powder is injected into thegenerated jet stream.
