EditorialIT IS GOAL SETTING TIME

Christmas is coming, everybody is preparing for the holiday activities and looking forward to the opportunity to meet with family, relatives and friends to celebrate and enjoy this wonderful season. In the last days of the year individuals and companies do the best to end the year by scrambling to achieve the goals they set at the beginning of the year. There is no doubt that now is also the right time to begin working towards setting goals for the New Year.

As parents it is extremely relevant to teach our children the importance of planning and goal setting. It is important that they learn how to set goals that will challenge them. The first step is to imprint on them the culture of discipline, order and achievement.

Remember that positive results are surely the consequence of hard work, perseverance and conviction. You can enjoy your life if you are focused and love everything you do. This is a secret which guarantees that goals and desires become reality.

Enjoy all things you have built, continue working hard and surely good things will come your way if you act with love, ethics and respect.

It is time to thank all of you who have sent us positive comments, positive criticism and congratulations for our three first editions of BEST Magazine. You are a vital part of this challenge and your support and involvement is what enhances our work and keeps our enthusiasm high. Please enjoy our fourth edition.

We hope BEST Magazine continues to be our way of showing passion through professionalism.

We want our readers, clients, and friends to write to us and propose topics to be covered in future editions. Remember that we are a group of entrepreneurs looking to do different and constructive things for all of you.

BEST Group and BEST Magazine wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2015 surrounded with love, health, good goal setting, and all the BEST!

EditorialLA HORA DE LOS LOGROS Y LAS METAS

Winter’s on its way! Get ready by preparing your vehicle and home for colder weather. You can improve your safety, save money and keep comfortable throughout winter

with a few simple steps:

For Your Vehicle: Have you… 1. Had your vehicle serviced? Ask your mechanic to perform an

inspection: Test the battery and brakes, inspect the exhaust,

check the cooling system, check fluids, change the oil, and

make sure all components are working properly. Check the

vehicle’s owner’s manual for information on the correct

fluid types and recommended service intervals.

2. Checked the wiper blades? Inspect your wiper blades to

make sure they’re functional and in good condition. If

you live in an area that typically sees lots of snow and ice,

consider installing winter blades. Store an ice scraper in

the car, and stock up on windshield washer fluid rated to

withstand -30 degrees or lower temperatures.

3. Monitored the fuel line? Today’s ethanol fuels remove small

amounts of water from your fuel system to help prevent

freezing. In addition, you can help keep avoid freeze-ups by

keeping your vehicle in a heated garage, avoiding refueling

while the tanker truck is at the station (water and deposits

from the tanker could end up in your fuel line) and keeping

your gas cap secured. Another solution: Always keep the

tank at least half-full.

4. Inspected the tires? Check for uneven wear, cupping,

sidewall cracking and other damage or deterioration. Also

examine tire treads to make sure the grooves are deep

enough to grip slick surfaces. If your tires fail any of these

tests, replace them with all-season tires, or, in extreme

winter environments, with winter snow tires. Wonder if

your tires have enough tread? Try the penny test: Stick

a penny (Lincoln head first) into one of the grooves that

goes completely around the tire. If you can see the top of

Lincoln’s head, your tread is worn down below 2/32 of an

inch and should be replaced.

5. Stocked the trunk with emergency equipment? Essentials

include: Flares, jumper cables, a shovel, a first-aid kit, a

flashlight, extra batteries, non-perishable snacks and

cold-weather gear.

At Home: Have you…1. Cleaned the gutters? Clear debris from gutters and test

downspouts for drainage to protect against water damage.

2. Trimmed trees? Cut back dead or dying limbs and any

branches that can touch the roof or siding. When it’s windy,

branches can rub or scratch the surfaces of your home and

cause damage. They also could fall during a storm or break

under heavy snow and ice.

3. Stopped the air leaks? Eliminating air leaks will improve

your home’s comfort and efficiency. Your first stops? The

basement and the attic. Attic leaks allow warmed air to

escape, and have the effect of drawing cold air in through

basement leaks. Use a can of spray foam insulation to plug

up the offenders in both areas.

4. Scheduled a heating system inspection? Have your furnace

professionally inspected and cleaned to reduce the risk of

a breakdown and to keep the system running efficiently.

If you have a fireplace, have your chimney professionally

cleaned and inspected and ensure that your damper

opens, closes and seals tightly.

5. Winterized outdoor faucets? Remove all hoses or devices

attached to outdoor spigots. Have in-ground sprinkler

systems blown out, and turn off water to outdoor spigots.

Be sure to drain any water left behind in the pipes.

CHRISTMAS - A TIME FOR A NEW I-TUNEBY CLAUDIA FALQUEZ-WARKENTIN • LAWYER •

The end of 2014 is near, too fast, too soon. Christmas and the holiday cheer is on. You take stock of your tune in life guided by that festive spirit, and the exciting anticipation of making good on your new year’s resolutions ahead of you.

As I check on my own tune, I drift towards the often asked question as to what kind of lawyer I am. After ceremoniously explaining what I do as a Family Law and Estates Lawyer, the elevator speech in a capsule is delivered. The swift arrival of the elevator leaves no time for more.

Everything seems to be rushed nowadays. No time to get to know people. What makes them tick; what drum they beat to; what higher vision moves them.

Christmas is a time that evokes celebration, love and laughter, family gatherings, childhood memories, sing-alongs and a reconnection with the world that surrounds us.

Times have changed and so has the Christmas season we all so cherished.

Take Dave Barry’s joke: “In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it ‘Christmas’ and went to church; the Jews called it ‘Hanukkah’ and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say ‘Merry Christmas!’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah!’ or (to the atheists) ‘Look out for the wall!”

In keeping with Christmas, I am reminded that…“it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go; with candy canes and silver canes aglow, the prettiest sight to see is the holly you see on your own front door”.

Beware the Grinch though.

“Why, for fifty-three years I’ve put up with it now!”“I MUST stop this Christmas from coming! But HOW?”Then he got an idea! An awful idea!THE GRINCH GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. But I think that the most likely reason of all,May have been that his heart was two sizes too small”.

Do not despair that Maria is on her way.

« Con mi burrito Sabanero voy camino de Belen; Con mi cuatrico voy cantando mi burrito va trotando, si me ven voy camino de Belen ».

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”

The Little Drummer boy knew the meaning well enough: “He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum, me and my drum. Don’t let them tell you you’re not good enough; Don’t let them tell you you’re not strong enough; me and my drum we’re gonna change the world”.

“Peace on earth pa rum pum pum pum - can it be, see the day of glory, every child must be made aware and made to care, care enough and to give the love that he can.” Change the world indeed Bing Crosby and David Bowie hit in magical notes: “I pray my wish will come true for my child and your child too – you’ll see the day of glory when men of good will…. live in peace again”. Melancholy strikes. “Christmas Eve will find me, where the love light gleams. I will be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams” - Maria’s Sound of Music is quick to the rescue: “when the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I just simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad”. Laura Ingalls Wilder strikes the perfect chords: “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.”

Wilder reminds me to I-tune that elevator speech and rekindle the fire that drives who I am in the work that I do: fierce about protecting my client’s rights, passionate about long lasting resolutions to conflict and creative problem solving; a free spirit I shall always remain. Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad Prospero Año y Felicidad. I want to wish you all a happy Christmas from the bottom of my heart!

Peace on Earth to All.

BECOMING A REAL ESTATE INVESTOR-PART2 BY FRANCISCO GARZON

ECONOMY AND FINANCE ECONOMÍA Y FINANZAS

The second part of the series ‘Becoming a real estate investor’ will become the base so that next year you may begin your role as an investor. Your residential home will be the leverage to begin building your investment portfolio.

Upon deciding what to buy, the budget will be an important step in defining the type of investment and associated risk. The expected return on investment will also be important along with knowing to be clear about cash flow, impact on tax and other issues. It is an exciting and extensive subject. Some options and types of investments to consider:

Residential Properties for rent: the main objective is that they will pay themselves over time. These properties may be apartments, condos or freehold properties. These properties range from a residential unit to multi-unit residentials such as buildings. From bachelors to homes with more than 5 rooms. An investor that is just beginning usually starts with single unit residential properties, Duplex, ‘Triplex’ or ‘Fourplex’. The last two are options that require higher budget and a higher level of administration. Properties with more than 4 residential units are considered commercial buildings and the issue of financial approvals will be considered as commercial properties.

Properties to Renovate: This implies a higher level of risk, and requires additional initial capital to spend on renovations. Needs to structure a team of qualified professionals: The real estate broker to buy and sell the property; plumbers;

electricians; builders; and specialists in roofing, windows, floors, etc. Must be aware of regulations, zoning, how to process permits, etc. If you buy, renovate and sell, referred to as flipping process, you must be aware of risk and be able to accept and deal with delays in construction, permits and/or timing for selling of the property. It is important to get well located properties, under conditions allowing for renovations; or in areas that have a tendency to be renovated and revitalized and sale price will be on market value for the area. The margin of return can be very interesting. Renovations can range from cosmetic issues to extensions, large demolition and reconstruction. Some topics in renovations have better impact and do not need necessarily high budget. Get well informed.

Commercial Property: In this field the topic is extremely broad, commercial properties may be retail space, warehouses, land, businesses, etc. They may be independent properties “freehold” or condominiums located in malls, commercial or industrial plazas. Costs per square area, risks, zoning, permits and approval process may differ from residential properties. Returns and different conditions apply than do for residential rents and liquidity when sold is different. It is an incredibly wide and diverse investment option. However, it requires more capital and implication in taxes such HST.

New residential properties: Can be houses or apartments. Deposit schemes and times vary with builders, usually having to pay in advance 15% in the first 180 days. Delivery times can often be a nightmare. Beware of buying what is leftover! It may be a good deal or a huge problem. The properties are given in occupancy while common elements, sidewalks, driveways, backyards and amenities (for condos) are still under construction. In the case of apartments, you must remember that there exists temporary occupation which generally does not allow you to rent / sell within that period which generates a loss of earnings from 3 months to 1 year. New properties when they are investments have an impact on sales tax “HST”. Purchase costs are also different. It is important to consult a real estate broker and /or attorney to avoid any surprises.

In the next issue of this series as investors we will deal with:

• Being a good landlord • Profiles of tenants by type of investment property;• Selecting a good tenant and tips on how to administrate

your property.

RRSP (Registered Retirement Saving Plan):An RRSP is a great way to save for retirement while also helping to save on taxes now and in the future. Canadians can defer federal and provincial income tax until retirement when their tax rates are likely to be much lower. Any interest, dividends or capital gains earned inside an RRSP are also allowed to grow tax-free. At retirement the accumulated savings is turned into income. The RRSP must be transferred to a RRIF (Registered Retirement Income Fund) or to an Annuity (payments for life).

Anyone 71 years of age or younger who reports earned income for tax purposes can contribute to an RRSP. Even children are allowed to have RRSPs, as long as they meet the earned income requirement. The federal government limits how much can be contributed to an RRSP. The annual contribution cannot exceed 18% of the income earned for the previous year or $24,930 in 2015 whichever is less. You don’t lose contribution room if you don’t contribute; the room carries forward and is added to contribution room in the next year. Let me give you an example of how this magic works:

An employee has very few ways to decrease the amount he/she pays in taxes. Let’s see some examples:

1. Child care (goes to the spouse with the lower income, so doesn’t help too much).2. Union dues: small amount.3. Health care costs: only a small percentage.4. Donations: only a small percentage.5. Education: only a small percentage.6. RRSP’s is the most efficient for the dollar you invest: in the example above, if you make $ 90,000 and maximize your RRSP’s every year for the next 20 years, you save in taxes $184,737, making your investments for retirement $ 780,664.

Employee, 45 years old:

Now let’s see how you can get the income at retirement:

1. If you are married, the Federal Legislation allows you to split all sources of retirement income with your spouse, making the tax bracket lower.2. Even though RRSP’s become income at retirement and is fully taxed, most people will have a lower income at retirement than they have in their productive years, paying less taxes.3. Per each dollar of retirement income you need a minimum of $14 saved before taxes.

4. Taxes you pay at retirement are much lower than what you paid in your productive years, making the investments in RRSP a lot of sense.

Now, let’s compare with other type of investments:

TFSA vs. RRSP?TFSA is a great way to save for any purpose like emergency funds or retirement. Any investment income accumulated is tax free. You don’t save any taxes at the time of investing but when you use the money will all be tax free. You only can invest $5,500 dollars a year to a maximum of $ 31,000 (carry over previous years). If you are in a high tax bracket today, you should maximize your RRSP’s first and start with TFSA’s. If your tax bracket is not too high, let’s say income less than $50,000, so TFSA’s would make sense.

PAY OFF THE MORTGAGE vs RRSP?With the interest rates at the lowest point in 20 years (close to 3%), why bother paying off the mortgage? Aside from having peace of mind, there are no other advantages. From an investment perspective it makes more sense to invest in RRSP’s as your investments grow 30% to 40% right away plus the investment return which should be higher than 3% in the long run, if it is well diversified and with a good asset allocation (equity, bonds, fixed income).

Remember the deadline to invest in RRSP: March 1st 2015. CALL ME TODAY FOR MORE INFORMATION !!!

HABLEMOS ACERCA DEL EFILE-NETFILE

LET’S TALK ABOUT EFILE-NETFILE

BY /POR HENRY LOPEZ BBA, CPM

W hen your tax return is done, now what? If you’ve hired someone to prepare it for you, you have the option of EFILING your return. EFILE is an automated system that allows approved electronic filers to electronically deliver

individual income tax return information to the CRA.

You can’t EFILE your tax return yourself. You must first have your return prepared by an approved electronic filer. Most firms that offer tax preparation services are registered to EFILE returns, if you prepare your tax return by yourself you can use NETFILE service to transmit your taxes electronically but more restrictions are applicable.

The majority of Canadian taxpayers can have their return electronically filed. Individuals who can’t EFILE – NETFILE, include non-residents, individuals who came to or left Canada during the tax year, individuals who have declared bankruptcy, and people who have to pay income tax to more than one province or territory. Tax returns of deceased individuals cannot be EFILED either.

What are the benefits of EFILING?

Most people like EFILING their return because they get their assess ments and refunds faster. In fact, the wait is cut to two weeks from the usual four to six if you’re a procrastinator and file toward the end of April. If you’re one of those who file in the middle of March, you may actually see your refund in just over a week! Also, because electronically transmitting your return saves the CRA from having to manually input your data, it reduces the likelihood of data entry errors. Last but not least, EFILING saves you a stamp

Are chances of an audit lower if I EFILE?

EFILED returns are selected for review using the same criteria as paper-filed returns. So if you’re worried about an audit, don’t think you can reduce your odds by EFILING your return.

when you EFILE, the CRA may contact you asking for backup information for some of your claims.

The most common requests are for childcare, medical, and donation receipts. The CRA tries to select only returns for which they think there is a higher probability of non-compliance, but this is not always the case. Don’t panic, however, if you receive a request to send more information. It doesn’t mean you’re being audited.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST DEMYSTIFIED

There is nothing worse that can happen to a lawyer, or his or client, than for a conflict of interest to arise in the middle of an action or financial transaction.

What exactly is a conflict of interest, how do they occur and what are the legal consequences?

Simply put a conflict of interest arises when the lawyer is put in a position where there are competing interests or conflicting instructions that the lawyer is expected to serve, protect or follow.

The most common example is a conflict of interest between two or more clients that the lawyer is representing. For example a couple that is buying a property may come to some disagreement as to a particular aspect of the property or the transaction. An example of such a conflict concerns the manner in which the couple will be taking title to the property. One of the might want the title to be registered with him or her owing a specified percentage of the title where the other might want to own the property together with a right of survivorship. Unless the couple is able to resolve their competing expectations or desires so that they speak with one voice, the lawyer is unable to take any further steps in the transaction since he cannot act without instructions. A related conflict in a typical real estate transaction occurs between the buyer and the mortgage lender. In most cases, the real estate lawyer is representing the buyer and the bank. This is usually not problematic because the buyer and the bank have common interests: that the title to the property be free of defects, liens and encumbrances, that the buyers receive what they bargained for, etc.; however, in many cases, the bank’s mortgage commitment will include many conditions that the buyer must satisfy in order for the bank to advance the mortgage funds on the date of closing. The most common of these being that the buyer must be putting down a certain sum of money from his or her own resources and not from borrowed funds.

In the event that the lawyer becomes aware that the buyers are not strictly satisfying any condition in the commitment he is duty-bound to inform the bank, even if the buyer specifically instructs him not to do so.

Given that the lawyer will not be able to take any further steps in the transaction or proceeding the consequences of such conflicts can be extremely problematic and expensive for the clients as they may be prejudiced in the transaction and be exposed to liability for failing to discharge their obligations under contract in the case of a transaction, or to the court or adverse parties in the case of court proceedings.

A less frequent type of conflict of interest is where the lawyer’s own interests are in conflict with those of the client. Under such circumstances, the lawyer has an interest in a particular result being realized and cannot objectively and impartially advise or represent the client, because it is presumed that he cannot set his interest aside or prefer the interests of the client to his own.

Again, the result of such a conflict is that the lawyer will have to cease acting for the client and put the client to the expense and inconvenience of retaining another lawyer.

In order to avoid being caught in a conflict of interest the Law Society of Upper Canada has enacted Rules of Conduct and guidelines to assist the lawyer to identify possible conflicts of interest before they occur. Once the lawyer becomes aware of the possible conflict he is bound to disclose the conflict to the client and to recommend that the client retain another lawyer.

In some circumstances, the client, not the lawyer, can waive the conflict of interest in which case the lawyer can continue to act; however, it is unwise to do so as the full extent of the effect of the conflict and the legal import thereof may not be so readily foreseeable at the time that the decision to waive the conflict is made. Prudence dictates that lawyers should never act in the face of a potential conflict, regardless of how much the client wants them to or the potential inconvenience and expense of finding

another lawyer.

Consider it when planning your future

You might think: you will not have to pay penalties, you are staying in your house for ever, and you know you are getting the best interest rate and deal possible, you think you will keep your mortgage for the whole term, so why should you care? The truth is that life, jobs, interest rates and needs change whether you want it or not. Because life happens, you need to get your mortgage with the best conditions just to be saved.

Penalties and their calculations are a very standard part of the contract you did or will sign to get a mortgage. To help you understand why penalties are calculated differently by each lender we need to talk about “Posted Rates”.

Let’s see, Which mortgage would you rather get?

much the same deal; same rate, term, dates, and kind of mortgage, there is a huge different in the penalty they will have to pay if they need to cancel their mortgages. Why? Because John’s lender uses POSTED RATES while Mary’s lender doesn’t. John’s lender used a discount of 2.05% to go from 5.24% to the final 3.19% rate, and applies this same discount to calculate the penalty. That’s the reason why John has to pay $15,968.22 to break his contract. Mary’s lender offered her the best rate they had at the moment (the same 3.19%) and DOES NOT USE posted rates and discounts, Mary will have to pay only $3,169.35, Mary’s lender doesn’t apply any discount to calculate the penalty (pic 1).

If you’d like to avoid huge penalties in the future, you need to make sure your lender doesn’t use POSTED RATES and big discounts. You will know if that is the case when the lender advertises the rates in this format (pic 2).

If the lender you are trying to get your mortgage with has this kind of “Special Offers”, try to get advice from a mortgage broker willing to care for your wellbeing in the long run.

If you are currently thinking about refinancing your mortgage, make sure you know the penalty you will have to pay ahead of time; I have known so many people that are stuck with a mortgage and a lender because it doesn’t make sense to pay such a huge amount of money to break their contracts.

It is the right time for people, families, companies, entrepreneurs and in general all those who walk and breathe to define what they want to achieve in 2015. It’s as simple as asking, where are we going? If you are doing the right things all the while setting clear and

challenging goals, surely you will be rewarded.

This article would be more complete upon contemplating the economic, social and political environment to make a definition of an overall strategic plan that would be most correct. But this article does not intend to give a

lecture on Strategic Planning, but rather a call to action that we must learn to set goals and objectives to achieve increasingly better results. The idea is to do something simple and well taught applicable to everyone, particularly to families

and entrepreneurs.

It is common to hear consultants, CEOs,

managers, business coaches comment on the importance of defining objectives, the importance of having a plan of work, be it a family plan, a business plan, or a strategic plan. Numerous studies prove that goals are met to the extent that they are defined correctly and frequently monitored. It is definitely important to have written goals. You have to review them frequently. That’s a simple key to meet your goals and stay on track.

NUMEROUS STUDIES PROVE THAT GOALS ARE MET TO THE EXTENT THAT THEY ARE DEFINED CORRECTLY AND FREQUENTLY MONITORED.The main problem faced by companies, entrepreneurs

and people is knowing how to properly define what they want to achieve in a particular period. This is the cornerstone of the process. Then you need to define work plans or actions that are aimed at ensuring that the objectives are achieved.

Another common problem in defining objectives is the confusion of terminology. Goals with actions,

functions, visions and missions, strategies are confused etc. I’ve taken the liberty of making a definition of

concepts them looking very simple:

BY FRANCISCO GARZON

CONQUERING 2015Planning and Goal Setting

Page 23: Best magazine edition winter

23THE BEST MAGAZINE WINTER 2014

CONQUERING 2015Planning and Goal Setting

Objectives: something to achieve measurable should be

demanding but achievable and should be achieved within a

specific time

Actions: are the tasks that support the achievement of the

defined objectives.

Functions: The specific role that a person must take to

implement the actions and achieve objectives.

Mission: The rationale of the business in the short term

(1-3 years)

Vision: we expect the business to be recognized in the long

term (5-10 years).

Strategy: differentiator or path is decided to reach to achieve

the objectives based on the correct implementation of actions,

functions with excellent workmanship. In particular, it is what

connects all previous concepts.

I hope this is a basic guide for this time of year you achieve

a well-structured set goals that will enable personal and / or

professional growth and a better quality of life. Do not try to do

something complex and useless, but a work material usable

and easily accessible. It is intended that doing a simple exercise,

and thanks to examples or seek basic guidelines we support the

pursuit of excellence and growth in what we do as individuals in

a society.

DO NOT TRY TO DO SOMETHING COMPLEX AND USELESS, BUT A WORK MATERIAL USABLE AND EASILY ACCESSIBLEHere are some ideas of goals personally and family.

You should find that they are quite specific with limits,

demanding and sacrifice. For this you can exercise family

viewing everyone who wants and putting it in writing or

graphically leaning magazines and newspapers. This should

give us satisfaction and union. Ideal for a family plan has

objectives in the following topics:

Professional Growth and career advancement: What

are you looking for? Be realistic but also very demanding with

yourself. A promotion. An increase in salary. Change position.

Change of company. Grow your business. Start a new business.

Education: Preparation makes the difference. You have to

learn every day. Focus on their preferences or shortcomings

that would work. Music, sports or other hobbies. It helps to

have better quality of life and family. Never too late to start

something new.

Family: Make it something specific to your family, may be

aimed at improving their quality of life with them, to spend

more time, etc. The family is the base engine to help fulfill

everything you want. Think about activities at the couple or

with the whole family.

Health: Everything related to balance food, exercise, good

habits etc., should be a concrete and achievable objective. Over

the years people begin to make aware of this, but sometimes

later. We must begin now!

Savings: Thinking ahead is key for you to develop specific

savings goals. You start with small goals will achieve the great

goal. My grandfather said “He who spares a match every day do

not understand economics”

Holidays: They are Key to recharge batteries. Change of scenery,

meet new places, resting is important. Set a specific goal, sure

visit special places, learn from history or just live unforgettable

moments with your family or friends. This renewed energy.

In the belove table if a correct definition of performance

indicators is achieved, it will be easier defining specific objectives

and actions to be implemented. It is very certain that this

adequately support the development of the plan has been

defined.

Let the New Year is the time to clear your mind and define the

Now overlook the definition of objectives for entrepreneurs.

This is often a complicated subject by informality in their

business management. It is not easy to define objectives, often

do not know where to start. The truth is that it should be like

any company.

The overall business objectives will be the basis to define the

specific objectives in other areas of the business.

Start by defining the issues and critical business indicators,

which make it much easier to define objectives.

Growth in value (sales money $$), volume (according to the

type of product or service) and profitability.

Using four different businesses as examples identified some

critical factors for growth that should be used when defining

business objectives.

visiones o misiones, estrategias etc.

Page 26: Best magazine edition winter

26 THE BEST MAGAZINE WINTER 2014

corto plazo (1 a 3 años)

Visión: lo que esperamos que el negocio

sea en el largo plazo (5 a 10 años).

Estrategia: aspecto diferenciador o

y gracias a ejemplos o guías básicas

concreto y realizable. Con

los años las personas

comienzan a hacer

consciencia de esto, pero

a veces es tarde. Hay que

comenzar ya!

Ahorro: Pensar en el futuro es

clave para que usted desarrolle

objetivos concretos de ahorro. Comenzar

con metas pequeñas llevará a lograr el

gran objetivo.

definir objetivos, muchas veces no saben

Page 27: Best magazine edition winter

27THE BEST MAGAZINE WINTER 2014

When we look to buy art for our home or office, we usually turn to paintings, (acrylics? watercolours? oils? mixed media?), even sculptures and photographs are often considered. Unfortunately, we never look for textile or fibre art when we hope to find

the perfect piece for a specific space.

As fibre artist with more than 30 years of experience, I feel strongly about the fascinating medium of textile art, specifically in form of tapestries.

WHAT IS A TAPESTRY?

A tapestry is one of the most ancient textile techniques. Without going too much into specifics, let it just be said that tapestry is defined as weft-faced weaving, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work. This is contrary to cloth weaving, where both the warp and the weft threads may be visible.

Tapestry weaving was practiced as long ago as 3000 B.C. However, the “Golden Age” of tapestry weaving happened during the 12th and 13th century - - mostly due to its portability. (Le Corbusier once called tapestries “nomadic murals”). Tapestries could be rolled up and transported from one residence (castle, church) to another. They were displayed in churches on special occasions or draped on the walls of castles for insulation during the winter.

They served as educational illustrations as well as decorative display. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a rich tapestry panel (also called a “baldachin”), woven with symbolic emblems, a motto or coat of arms was hung behind or draped over a throne as symbol of authority.

TAPESTRY AS ART FORM

This begs the question: Was tapestry actually an art form? If it was, is it still a viable art? There is a tendency to compare

the art of tapestry to that of painting. However, the distance between those two art forms is considerable.

While tapestry is a manual craft, subject to a model (though not exclusively), painting is an art form that enjoys complete, creative freedom. One might say that tapestry lacks a certain spontaneity - - yet it is

exactly those characteristics which distinguish it from painting that

contribute to its richness and provide it with immense

artistic impact.

There was a time when tapestry was a collective art and could

be compared to the performance of a symphony.

The “composer” was the cartoon painter and the weavers

were the “musicians”. And yet, when one transposes a painted cartoon into the woven work, the weaver – now both artisan AND artist - - must call upon the skills of years of training and even individual personality, to capture every nuance of the

tapestry design.

TAPESTRY TODAY

As art, tapestry becomes the media with which to explore and develop possibilities: it is a glorious combination of aesthetics, concepts and techniques. Contemporary fibre art is interesting

and vital precisely because it exists in the space between the rigid and divisive category of craft and art. Tapestries are no longer classified as either function/educational or aesthetic, but have become interpretations and expressions of individuals. As such, they exist on a new plane. Through these textiles, individuals are able to demonstrate a balance of design and craft. While we recognize that an avant-garde approach is always important in art, there is also a need for good, sober, contemporary work that satisfies design for mass consumption. Ultimately, it is its variety and versatility that characterizes the renaissance of tapestry production.

I am glad to experience the revival of the art of tapestry. In the process, it is also breaking free of dogmatism as the contemporary movement is tolerant of all kinds of content. Tapestry has now conquered elements that have fractured previous, strict traditional, European techniques. A vast universe of textures, colours and sensorial stimulus has made possible the exploration of new ideas for tapestry projects. Tapestry now easily straddles the huge chasm between craft and art.

Tapestry weavers prove with their work that excellent knowledge of the craft of weaving is not enough. One has to be able to express aesthetically what fills the human soul. This has always been at the centre of the artistic element.

HOW TO COMMISSION A TAPESTRY?

When you decide on the kind of tapestry you will put in your home or office, there are several things to consider:

1. SPACE* | 2. BUDGET | 3. DESIGN*Where will the tapestry be displayed (aesthetic location & thought of conservation)

The artist/weaver will suggest ideas and designs for you to consider, depending on the information you provide regarding the above three points. Usually, a 50% down payment is required at the time of the commission and 50% upon delivery and installation. The artist will also advise on how to preserve the piece (cleaning, manipulating, etc.)

The tapestry installed and ready to create a warm and wonderful space in every home!

I was reminded again this past week how the unknown can unexpectedly put a damper on one’s travel plans. In this case I am referring to the long security lines at Chicago’s Midway Airport, with lines extending outside the building.

Add to this area weather, mechanical breakdowns, onboard emergencies and who knows what else, and there is little wonder why travel these days is so frequently related to stress and related discomforts.

But I have some good news for you. This doesn’t have to define you and your travel miscues. There is a better way and I am about to share it with you.

Since the knee-jerk phrase “not enough time” seems to be the answer to just about every short-fall today, you are about to put your previously lamented down-time to good use. Here are just five ways for you to get yourself and your thinking back on track.

The next time you find yourself sitting in an airport lounge waiting to hear anything over the loud speaker that resembles good news, here is what I want you to do:

Take out that book you have been trying to find time to read and knock of a few pages.

Sit upright in your chair, pull in your stomach muscles and do 100 toe raises.

Take out those blank postcards you have been carrying around in your bag and write a handful of brief, meaningful, from-the-heart notes to a loved one.

Close your eyes and reflect for a few minutes on how lucky you are. (Count your blessings and feel some legitimate gratitude.)

People watch. This may be the most fun trying to figure out what their story is and how and why they are in this god-forsaken airport. Do this after your toe raises and after you have written your postcards and read a chapter in your book.

The trick is to turn “down-time” into “up-time.” Once you get the hang of this, you will find wait delays in doctor’s offices, train stations or anywhere else your forward motion is halted, a time you will actually look forward to.

My name is Lorena ... I am a travel professional ... this is my story ... and I’m sticking to it.

There Is No Such Thing As Travel Delays

2. Paga tus cuentas a tiempo.

3. Cumple tus promesas. Si no has cumplido, pregúntate por qué tienes resistencia.

We’re often asked what camera settings need to be used for Christmas photography, and it’s no surprise why.

Christmas is arguably the best time of the year for photography. Lights everywhere, photo ops galore, family and friends around to be unwitting models–it has all the trappings of a photogenic time of year.

Here we’ll offer some tips for taking photos during the Christmas season:

The big questions here are when to photograph Christmas lights and what settings to use. Reasonable minds may differ on this, but my preference is photographing Christmas lights against a dark, night sky. I think the contrast created between the black of the sky and the color of the lights looks better than an ambient blue hour against lights.

Many photographers prefer this earlier-evening shots because this makes it easier to balance the exposure, without anything underexposed. This makes sense, and if you agree with this philosophy, you’ll want to start taking your photos as soon as the sun is completely down.

I think the dark of a night sky against vibrant Christmas lights makes a shot “pop” more, plus any additional detail that’s needed can be recovered by brightening the shadows in post processing.

When photographing landscapes or scenes of Christmas lights on a tripod, I typically go into full manual mode and adjust aperture and ISO as I see fit. I always set my ISO to 100 and then adjust my aperture depending upon the scene and the intensity of the lights. Usually, I use f/8 to f/16 for my aperture. Which aperture, precisely, depends upon the lens, whether I want a star effect (read below), and if there are crowds that I want to blur out of the shot. For shutter speed, I put the camera into “bulb” mode and leave the shutter open for as long as I feel appropriate. (If you want, start out with the camera at 30” before switching to bulb mode, so I have an idea of what it thinks is a reasonable exposure.) Sometimes this requires guessing, checking, and re-shooting (if the guess is way off ), but it also teaches you to eyeball a scene and approximate exposure based upon what you see. This may or may not be a valuable skill (probably not), but it’s my preference.

If you aren’t familiar with those concepts and just stick in auto mode, I (as always)

highly recommend reading basic concepts of camera setting before try it out.If you’re shooting handheld, I would recommend trying to brace the camera as best as possible, and using a moderate shutter speed (1/30th to 1/10th of a second), wide open aperture (the lowest number your camera has; it should be around f/2.8), and high ISO (ISO 800 to ISO 1600). The slower your shutter speed, the greater the possibility for blurry shots, so shoot in burst mode and trash the blurry shots (this is what I would do) or raise your ISO and increase the shutter speed for a greater percentage of crisp shots.

I understand that photograph at night is not easy at the beginning, but I encourage you to keep trying. Night photography is one of my favorites and they are outstanding.

Based on Tom Bricker blog post.

One of the biggest c h a l l e n g e s for women in business is to come up with how to balance their time. It is well known

that lack of time can be a nightmare for most of us as we embark on a new venture. We are not only trying to start a business from scratch, (with all the challenges we face during those early stages of creation) but also we are saturated with a variety of responsibilities.

Being moms, wives or partners, we cannot afford to walk away from our responsibilities in order to start building our dream business. Therefore the only viable option is to find a balance between being in business while also acting as a full time team member.

Even though there is not a perfect formula to balance your life with your business, here is my major entrepreneurship lesson as a business coach that may help you figure out the balance that really works for you.

Make a meaningful “to do list”

If you are the kind of person that really loves writing an endless list of tasks but rarely goes about completing any of them, then you need to add meaning to the process. Begin by listing the “must do” tasks and timing each one, ask yourself:

How long does it take for me to get the task done? A “must do” task is an activity that you cannot postpone. As doing laundry or cooking dinner, these “must do” tasks have to be done. In order to do that effectively, I ask you to be realistic and do not assign too much time for any of your tasks.

Remember that you only have between 16 to 17 hours a day. Once you have set aside time for your “must do” list follow by

listing the “want to do” tasks. These are the activities that you really enjoy doing; and figuring out why you want to do them. A valid “want to do” task has to do with its purpose or meaning.

This meaning is a set of goals that you want to achieve as a person or as an

entrepreneur. Let say, you love baking cupcakes for your children, ask yourself: is this task helping me to improve something myself or, contributing to upgrade my business? By answering such questions you are finding meaning on what you are doing. Once you have set your “must do” and “want to do” tasks, follow by cutting out those tasks that do not have any meaning. Voila! Now you have a more realistic and shortest “to do

list’.There is not right or wrong way to build a meaningful “to do list”. However, be aware about how you spend your day going about your life and business for your life and business makes a big difference in how you will feel at the end of the day. Spending your time wisely can make or break a business and determine

whether or not you get to bed on time.

How to Do an Email BLAST

An email blast is otherwise known as an email that you send to a mailing list or large group of people, who are usually known as your subscribers. Since email blasts are often sent to hundreds or thousands

of subscribers, the blasts are normally managed using email marketing software or web applications. When sending an email blast, you must write engaging and relevant content that grabs the attention of your readers, and adhere to guidelines and rules regarding spam. You can then use email marketing software or Internet applications to help manage and send your email blast. Continue reading this article to learn about the steps involved with creating and sending an email blast.

METHOD 1: WRITING THE EMAIL BLAST

DEVELOP A SUBJECT TITLE THAT IS INTERESTING AND ATTENTION-GRABBING.

The subject title must appear intriguing and exciting enough to encourage readers to open the email.Keep the subject title relevant to the content within the body of the article. This will prevent your readers from feeling tricked if they open your email and find that the content is not relevant to the title.

WRITE A SHORT, DIRECT MESSAGE IN YOUR EMAIL BLAST.

Readers are more likely to become engaged in your announcement if you can keep the message brief and direct.Provide basic details or snippets of information in your email, then embed links within the body of your email so readers can move on to your website for further reading or to purchase your service or product.

EXPLAIN TO READERS WHY YOUR MESSAGE IS IMPORTANT OR HOW IT WILL BENEFIT THEM.

For example, if you sell products that are currently on sale, inform readers that they can visit your website to buy holiday gifts for their friends and family at discounted prices.

INSTRUCT READERS HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE INFORMATION IN THE EMAIL BLAST.

When your subscribers read the email, they should understand how to follow-up or use the information presented in the email to contact you or buy your services or products.

• Provide instructions to readers on ways they can purchase your product, such as including a link to the checkout page of your website, or by providing your telephone number, address, or other contact information.

CREATE A SENSE OF URGENCY IN YOUR EMAIL BLAST.

If readers are under the impression they must act immediately to take advantage of your services or products, they will most likely follow your instructions and continue on to your website.

• Offer your readers a time-sensitive coupon code or promotion that will encourage them to use or purchase your services and products immediately.

METHOD 2: FOLLOWING SPAM GUIDELINES

SEND EMAIL BLASTS TO YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE ONLY.

This practice is likely to result in more participation or higher sales activity from your readers when you send blasts to those who willingly subscribed to your content.

• Send the blasts to readers who signed up for your newsletters, blog posts, updates, announcements, and other correspondence through your website, organization, or place of business.

WORLD & PEOPLE

Page 41: Best magazine edition winter

41THE BEST MAGAZINE WINTER 2014

PROVIDE A WAY FOR READERS TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM YOUR EMAILS.

Although this practice may not seem beneficial from a business standpoint, most countries and regions require you to provide your readers with a way to stop receiving your emails in the event they change their minds or no longer want to be associated with your organization.

• Include a link at the bottom of your email blast that allows readers to unsubscribe from your emails and other correspondence.

FORMAT YOUR EMAIL BLASTS IN A WAY THAT PREVENTS EMAIL CLIENTS AND READERS FROM MARKING YOUR MESSAGES AS SPAM.

Certain keywords and formats will trigger spam alerts in email clients or influence readers to mark your messages as spam; which will prevent future messages from being delivered to those recipients indefinitely.

• Refrain from using formatting techniques such as writing in all caps, crowding the message body with multiple links, placing images only in the message body, and ending sentences with multiple exclamation points.

• Refrain from using keywords that discuss “urgent matters,” money-back guarantees, major “breakthroughs,” and the phrase “click here.”

METHOD 3: EMAIL MARKETING SOFTWARE

USE THE EMAIL MARKETING SOFTWARE OR APPLICATION TO SEND YOUR EMAIL BLAST.

This procedure will vary greatly depending on the software or application you decide to use.

• Follow the directions provided by the email marketing service or software manufacturer to determine how to send email blasts using that specific software.

Civilizations, wars, politics and economics, all these factors contribute to the challenge of the environment today, “pollution “. Only when shown high growth of diseases in populations or stand high levels of pollution affecting public health, or recognized actors, environmentalists

“Bringing home a pollution controller”.

Plants are the universal and natural air filters, oxygen producers and healthy promoters. When you breathe, your body takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. During photosyn-

thesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This opposite pattern of gas use, makes plants and people natural partners. Adding plants to interior spaces can increase

oxygen levels.

Plants remove toxins from air, according to NASA research, up to 87 percent of volatile organic compounds – including substances like formaldehyde (present

in rugs, vinyl, grocery bags), benzene and trichloroethylene (both found in man-made fibers, inks, solvents and paint).

Different studies have shown that sickness rates fell by more than 60 percent in offices with plants improving health by reducing fatigue and stress. In average one larger plant every 100 square feet could be placed indoors to purify air or similar results are achieve with two smaller plants (4- to 5-inch pots). THE WONDER TOUCH OF CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY PART I

BY/POR EDWIN GALEANO

There is magic in touch…

In my last article, I had discussed the importance our emotions

have on our lives and most importantly our health. There

is a connection that Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST) creates

between our body and our emotions through what is called

Somato-Emotional-Release; therefore

our inner knowing and understanding

of our emotions are represented

through our bodies and therfore serves

as our connection towards self healing.

What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)

In order to discuss CST we need to refer

to the Cranial Sacral System (CSS) which

is related to the central nervous system.

The CSS is compose by the membrane,

the meninges, that encapsulates the

brain and the spinal cord from the

cranium all the way to the sacrum.

This membrane has three layers; the

central layer is important for the therapy

because it carries the cerebro-spinal

fluid within.

The movement of this fluid creates what is known as the

cranio-sacral rhythm and it is through this rhythm that CST is

able to evaluate and treat the CSS. This rhythm moves at a rate

of 10 to 12 cycles per minute. People who have been through

trauma can benefit from the balancing of the subtle expansion

and contraction of the rhythm originating from the centre of

the body.

CST uses a very light and gentle touch of about five grams of

pressure to connect to the rhythm that can be palpated

throughout the body. CST helps the body to initiate a new

pathway towards self-healing; it stimulates normalization

through its direct relationship with the central nervous system.

Once, CST helps relax the central nervous system, numerous

functions in the body take effect

towards relaxation, balancing and

healing.

CST is widely used as a wellness modality

for people to connect with themselves,

their emotions and their physical body.

It has been used effectively in the

treatment for head, neck and back pain,

constipation, hypertension, jaw

dysfunction, neurological conditions

and joint inflammations. Also, chronic

fatigue, fibromyalgia, tension related

conditions, and emotional difficulties.

In essence, CST helps relax the

central nervous system and release

restrictions or obstructions within this

membrane. Because of its gentle access to the very core of the

body, it contributes to positive outcomes on multiple aches,

pains, illnesses and emotional self awareness. People report

experiencing sensations of lightness, floating, calmness, inner

peace, as well as better sleep, increased elimination, increased

mobility and mental clarity.

In the next article I will be talking more in dept about specific

cases and the relationship of CranioSacral Therapy and its

interesting effects...

You may find it hard to believe that fat is essential to your health, but it’s true. Without fat, our bodies can’t function properly. And without the proper kinds

of fats in our diet, our eye health also may suffer. Omega-3 fatty acids include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicoapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in the maintenance of general health by providing energy, supporting cellular structures, and mediating many physiological processes.

The best food sources of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids are cold-water fish, which are high in both DHA and EPA.

Examples include sardines, herring, salmon and tuna. Wild-caught varieties usually are better than “farmed” fish, which typically are subject to higher levels of pollutants and chemicals.

Several studies suggest omega-3 fatty acids may help protect adult eyes from dry eye syndrome. Dry eye symptoms are caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. This lack of lubrication can cause persistent dryness, scratching, burning in eyes or a foreign body sensation.

Tear quality is essential for good eye health. Poor tear quality can cause a wide range of symptoms from eye pain to impaired vision and a compromised quality of life. Improving the omega-3-lipid component of the tear leads to better tear composition and better lubrication for the eye

The recommended daily dose of total EPA and DHA is at least 1000 milligrams per day.

Many believe that all commercially available Omega-3 supplements have essentially equivalent ingredients. Fish oils and flax seeds

usually have only small amounts of EPA and DHA. One would have to take many more of them a day in order to get the recommended daily amount of EPA and DHA.

Choosing to take an omega-3 will provide your body the necessary nutrients for optimal tear composition and overall eye health. Choosing the right omega-3 is just as important. Omega-3’s rich in EPA and DHA in their natural triglyceride form will enhance your therapeutic outcome.

WHY SHOULD YOU INSTALL SECURITY CAMERAS AT HOME

BY JORGE BAQUERO

The safety of our property is one of our primary concerns in life. At times, we may not feel safe even in our own homes. Crimes do not only

take place at the streets. It now comes into residential areas, inside our homes.

How can we ensure the safety of our homes while we sleep at night or while we are on travel? With the advancement of technology, you can now feel at ease without worrying for the safety of your home. Home security technologies like security alarms, spy cameras, wired and wireless security systems and other monitoring devices, can help detect criminal activity in your house. This is an investment you should make.

Why install Security Cameras At Home?

Home security cameras are one of the most well-known

gadgets that you can equip your home with. To install them, you can seek help from qualified

IT Company. Home security cameras might

not prevent burglars from breaking into your property,

but it offers you a particular level of peace, realizing that everything

going on inside your home and its premises are well recorded.

Installing a home security camera in full view is one way to ward off and discourage burglars as camera recordings can be transmitted to a neighborhood security receiving station and monitored by authorities who can immediately respond to untoward incidents in your residential premise. Security cameras in full sight can also discourage robbers from pursuing the crime because homeowners can use camera recordings as evidence of crime in court.

Considering these things in mind, making your home safer requires more than just a home security camera. Along with cameras, door alarms, beware-of-dog signs, and motion activated stoplights are all ways to protect you and your family. A fake camera could even help deter criminals if placed in

strategic locations. With the abundance of affordable home security systems available, a safe home is something that is becoming a realistic goal. You should implement safety measures not only to protect your property and keep your family safety, but also to give you a peace of mind.

How many security cameras do you need at home? It would depend on the size of your residential premise, the number of rooms and entrances and exits, and how intensively and extensively you want every corner monitored.

But the number of cameras should not be your one and only consideration. The number of security cameras at home would still be useless if these cameras are not backed up by a solid home security system with people who can monitor and respond immediately to untoward incidents at your home should the need arise.

Installing Your Security Camera is a great solution to your security challenges. If you would want to install a security camera at home, you should approach reliable IT Company for service.
