    On behalf of the Learning Teacher Network I wish

    you warmly welcome to the networks 7th Internao-

    nal Conference, which has the tle Leadership for

    an Inclusive and Sustainable World. Alike previous

    conferences, the event will be a golden opportunity forgaining new knowledge and sharing experience with

    colleagues in a good and friendly atmosphere in an

    internaonal seng.

    Within the framework of learning, this years confe-

    rence addresses two main ingredients of educaon

    and training: Leadership and Educaon for sustaina-

    ble development (ESD). High prole keynote speakers

    and a large number of professionals from all levels of

    educaon and training gather together to exchange

    front-line knowledge and good pracce. Already nowI would like to express my appreciaon of the more

    than 70 presenters from 19 countries who will contri-

    bute with sessions, altogether ensuring that the con-

    ference will be an extraordinary venue for learning

    and internaonal collaboraon.

    I hope that also you will join this important

    event of the year and take the opportunity to

    parcipate in the coming smulang and know-

    ledge building discussions. The conference will

    be a unique opportunity for networking and formaking new connecons for the future.

    This me the conference is located to Berlin,

    which is one of Europe's most charming cies. I

    am convinced that each one parcipang at the

    gest cylindrical aquarium, where a multude of tropical sh reside in

    Leading Learning Organizaons to Excellence

    Professor J. Wessel Ganzevoort joined KPMG in 1970 as a management consultant. He stu-

    died business administraon, economics and social psychology. Since 1982 he served KPMG

    in various management posions: as chairman of the Dutch pracce, as chairman of KPMGs

    European consulng acvies and as deputy chairman for global consulng. From 1994 to

    1996 he was president of the Netherlands Associaon of Management consultancy Firms

    (ROA).

    From 1996 to 1999 Wessel Ganzevoort was responsible for KPMG Inspire Foundaon, an

    innovaon and research center of KPMG. Since 1998 he teaches organizaon dynamics and

    innovaon at the University of Amsterdam. Since he le KPMG in January 2000 he has been

    non execuve chairman and boardmember of several companies and instuons and is ac-

    ve as a boardroom consultant and coach for topteams and individual execuves. His areasof experse are strategy, leadership and organizaon development.

    AT THE TEMPLE UNIVERSITY IN PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA

    Ethical Educaonal Leadership: Decision MakingJoan Poliner Shapiro is Professor of Educaonal Administraon at Temple Universitys College

    of Educaon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Previously, she served as Associate Dean for

    Research and as Chair of her department at Temple. She also has been Co-Director of Womens

    Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, taught in secondary schools in the United States and

    United Kingdom, and supervised intern teachers. Currently, she is the Vice President of Temples

    Faculty Senate and the Co-Founder of the New DEEL (Democrac Ethical Educaonal Leader-

    ship). She holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and completed post-doctoral

    work at the University of Londons Instute of Educaon. Most recently, she received the Lind-

    back Disnguished Teaching Award and the University Council of Educaonal Administraons

    Master Professor Award. She has co-authored six books and wrien over 50 journal arcles andchapters in edited books. Her work focuses on gender issues and ethical leadership in educaon.

    Astronaut and Prof. Christer FuglesangESA ASTRONAUT AND PROFESSOR OF EXPERIMENTAL PARTICLE PHYSICS

    Flying in Space, for the Benet of Earth

    ESA - and former NASA - astronaut Christer Fuglsang is docent and aliated professor of experi-

    mental parcle physics at Kungliga Tekniska Hgskolan, Stockholm Sweden. He has received spe-

    cial honours as Honorary Doctorate from Ume University, Sweden; Honorary Doctorate from

    the University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia; NASA Space Flight Medal; and the H.M. the Swedish

    Kings Medal.

    In 1989, he became a Senior Fellow of CERN, where he worked as head of the parcle iden-

    caon subdetector. In November 1990, Fuglesang obtained a posion at the Manne Siegbahn

    Instute of Physics, Stockholm. In 1992, Fuglesang was selected to join the European Astronaut

    Corps, where he completed basic training at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) the following

    year. In 1993, he commenced training at GCTC in preparaon for their ight engineer tasks, extra-

    vehicular acvies (spacewalks) and operaon of the Soyuz spacecra. In 1995 he was selectedas member of Crew 2 for the Euromir 95 mission, where aer in 1996 he underwent specialized

    training on Soyuz operaons for undocking, atmospheric re-entry and landing.

    In 1996 at NASA, Fuglesang entered the Mission Specialist Class at NASA's Johnson Space Center

    (JSC), Houston. He qualied for ight assignment as a Mission Specialist in 1998 and was also

    awarded the Russian 'Soyuz Return Commander' cercate, which qualies him to command a

    three-person Soyuz capsule on its return from space.

    Following the assignment from and preparaons since 2002, from December 9-22, 2006, Christer

    Fuglesang ew as a Mission Specialist on Space Shule Discovery on STS-116 to the Internaonal

    Space Staon (ISS). Fuglesang parcipated in his second spaceight from August 29 to Septem-

    ber 12, 2009 as a Mission Specialist on Space Shule Discovery on STS-128 to the InternaonalSpace Staon. A veteran of two spaceights, Christer Fuglesang has logged over 641 hours in

    space, including 5 Extravehicular acvies (EVAs; spacewalks) totalling 31 hours and 54 minutes.

    This presentaon will provide a framework to help educators make ethical decisions. It will introduce parcipants to theMulple Ethical Paradigms of jusce, crique, care and the profession, developed by Joan Poliner Shapiro and JacquelineA. Steovich. It will also provide examples, using two ethical dilemmas, of how to ulize the paradigms. One case willfocus on making decisions involving gender issues and the other will deal with deciding what to do under very turbulentcondions. In the laer case, Turbulence Theory, designed by Steven Jay Gross, will be introduced. The hope is that thoseeducators who aend the presentaon will feel more condent about making challenging ethical decisions in the future.

    Charles Hopkins is currently the UNESCO Chair at York University in Toronto, Canada where

    he coordinates an internaonal network of teacher educaon instuons from 55 countries

    collaboravely working upon the reorientaon of elementary and secondary teacher educa-

    on to address sustainable development. Hopkins is also a United Naons University (UNU)

    Chair on Educaon for Sustainable Development, developing Regional Centers of Experse

    in (ESD) globally.

    Charles, as a former Superintendent with the Toronto Board of Educaon and as a long me

    leader in the elds of educaon and ESD, lectures and meets with educaon leaders around

    the world.

    Keynote Address

    Flying in space, for the benet of EarthProf. Christer Fuglesang, ESAOrbing around Earth, 350 km up in space, and looking down on our beauful world, one cannot avoid thinking abouthow fragile it seems in some respects. The atmosphere, in parcular, looks very thin. In a space staon we have torecycle and reuse as much as possible and sustainability is a prerequisite. In some sense Earth is just a very large spacevehicle and many interesng and thoughul analogies can be made. Humankind might have learnt more about Earthand our place in the universe from observaons in space than from any other source of data. Another aspect of spaceights is the teamwork and preparaons necessary for successful space missions. For example, on ISS we were 13 peoplefrom 5 countries and we worked together without the slightest fricon solving many problems. You dont see bordersbetween countries from space and you wish all people on Earth could do the same.

    leadership structures which support and facilita-

    te learning and by doing this in collaboraon with

    the learners themselves we can arrive at muchmore meaningful academic and vocaonal lear-

    by which learning can be 'designed' rather than

    portant issues for 21st century learners such as

    The UN Decade of Educaon for Sustainable De-

    velopment has reached the midway point. At the

    midpoint review held in Bonn, ministers of edu-

    caon and other senior formal educaon ocials

    from around the world met to capture what had

    been accomplish, what had been learned to date

    and what remained to be accomplished in the

    remaining half Decade. Much of this discussion

    regarding the way forward for formal educaon

    was captured in the Bonn Declaraon. This Decla-

    raon is a road map draed by 30 senior ocials

    represenng the 6 UN regions worldwide.

    Charles Hopkins chaired the draing commiee

    and will share insight and discuss the key recom-

    mendaons as they apply to teachers, schools

    and school systems.

    from this research, the student expereince and

    In 2008 14,9% young people in Europe le school

    with at most lower secondary school. An upper

    secondary school educaon is generally consi-

    dered as a minimum for taking part in a know-

    school leavers need to come back to educaon as

    adults to complete upper secondary school edu-

    caon. Researches point to a posive relaonship

    between educaon level and a reduced risk for

    unemployment and more training opportunies.

    understanding and ensuring links are made bet-

    Flying in space, for the benet on Earth

    Astronaut and Prof. Christer FuglesangOrbing around Earth, 350 km up in space, andlooking down on our beauful world, one cannot

    avoid thinking about how fragile it seems in some

    respects. The atmosphere, in parcular, looks

    very thin. In a space staon we have to recycle

    and reuse as much as possible and sustainabi-

    lity is a prerequisite. In some sense Earth is just

    a very large space vehicle and many interesng

    and thoughul analogies can be made. Human-

    kind might have learnt more about Earth and our

    place in the universe from observaons in space

    than from any other source of data. Another as-

    pect of space ights is the teamwork and prepa-

    raons necessary for successful space missions.These would certainly also be good to apply more

    on Earth. For example, on ISS we were 13 people

    from 5 countries and we worked together wit-

    hout the slightest fricon solving many problems.

    You dont see borders between countries from

    space and you wish all people on Earth could do

    the same.

    In a hyper complex society with more and more

    With both the US and the Europe dealing with

    an ever increasing mulcultural environment,

    promong understanding between the peoples

    their interacons is paramount. In order to meet

    this challenge a new generaon of globally litera-

    te educators and educaonal leaders is needed.

    Faced with a rigidly proscripve teacher educa-

    on program and a mandate to create more

    globally literate teachers, one teacher educaon

    program in the US has created an innovave new

    program which will prepare students to become

    eecve teachers and equip them to be able to

    understand and appreciate a global perspecve.

    The Department of Early Childhood Educaon

    in the College of Educaon at Georgia State Uni-

    versity in Atlanta , Georgia USA is designing an

    undergraduate teacher educaon program in

    which students complete all required courses and

    school pracces while spending a signicant por-on of their program overseas engaged in course-

    work and school pracce. In an Open Session

    discussion format, this new program will be des-

    cribed and discussed. Feedback will be solicited

    from session parcipants. In addion, a general

    discussion about internaonalizaon of teacher

    educaon programs in the US and the unique

    problems involved will be held.

    The project has been running for ten years in

    Sweden, for Swedish school teams, with very

    How to implement democrac governance in

    secondary schools in concrete terms? We shall

    present the rst results about a New school go-

    vernance experimentaon that we are leading

    for one-year now, based on reecve pracce

    This acon research has been designed in 2009 to

    meet the needs of School Headteachers and thekey assumpons of sustainable development. We

    are exploring the percepon that sta and stu-

    dents have of the implementaon of sustainable

    development in their school and the way in which

    it could be developed to gain in eecveness, co-

    herence and empowerment. During the session

    we shall present our theorecal framework and

    a concrete example of the impact of this acon

    research on the governance of the agricultural

    college of Nantes-Saint Herblain (FR).

    In this project Facebook is used to inform future

    students of the teacher training college. We star-

    ted a group on Facebook where current and for-

    mer students and teachers give a realisc image

    of studying at the teacher training college: the

    members of the group post comments, pictures,

    videos

    On Facebook there is a link to a website that al-

    lows future students to test the level of their na-

    ve language. They can also make exercises in or-

    der to be well prepared when they start studying.

    We give special aenon to boys and immigrant

    students because they are underrepresented in

    the teacher training college. In this way we want

    to use facebook as a social learning network, sup-

    porng informal learning.

    In the project MY LIFE MY STYLE MY FUTURE

    pupils of two 6th forms of two Viennese schools

    analysed their own lifestyles and those of other

    teenagers by using social research methods.This paper presents insights in juvenile lifestyles

    and in quantave and qualitave results of the

    pupils' (self-)exploraon. It highlights how the te-

    enagers became aware of dierences in lifestyles,

    what they learned about (the connecon of their

    lifestyle to) sustainability and how they expres-

    sed their own ideas about sustainability via social

    media and graphic design.
