In an effort to provide high quality programs that meet the needs of swimmers and nonswimmers alike, the Recreation Department offers the Red Cross Swim Program. This is a complete learn-to-swim program, from Parent & Tot through to Adults & Leadership. The program stresses in water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills and also incorporates valuable water safety education that will last a lifetime. If you are unsure of the level your child should take, please refer to the Levels Guide in the Community Guide, or call the Recreation Department at 613-966-4632.
Swimming Lesson Schedules and Cancellations: Every effort is made by the Recreation, Culture & Community Services Department to keep lessons scheduled as advertised. However, due to low registration numbers and wait-lists, we may have to cancel and/or combine some classes. We will make every effort to notify, in advance, if swimming lessons are cancelled. On occasion, cancellations may happen on short notice due to unexpected situations such as pool fouling, facility cancellations, power failure, or mechanical diffi culties. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. For weather cancellations, we will make the decision that day and cancellations will be announced on the radio as well as posted on the City website.
Evaluations: Swimming lessons follow progressive evaluations and recognize that everyone learns at a different pace. Please realize that your child may need to repeat a level to ensure that they have mastered all of the required skills. This will help to make your child a stronger more competent swimmer. If you have any questions, please contact 613-966-4632.
Notes for Parents/Guardians: Please ensure that your child has gone to the bathroom, and has had a shower before entering the pool. Please ensure that your child wears proper swimming diapers if necessary. If your child has been ill or nauseous, it is recommended that you do not send them to class. It is suggested that your child avoid eating at least one hour prior to swimming lessons. If there is a fouling of the pool, we are required to close the pool.

Here are some tips for you to help your children get the physical activity they need:
Ask caregivers to use active transportation as much as possible (walk to/from school, stores, etc.).
Restrict television viewing and video and computer games during the after-school period (3–6 p.m.).
Encourage your children to participate in intramural activities after school.
Become aware of the different options for safe parks and playgrounds in your community.
Send children to school in clothes that promote physical activity and are appropriate to play in.
Choose active video gaming to replace sedentary activities as long as your child is actually moving.
Volunteer to supervise during recess or the lunch hour and assist in coaching after school activities.
Investigate the availability of programs being offered at YMCA/YWCA, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, parks and recreation departments, etc.
Visit participACTION.com/afterschool to find resources and tips on physical activities for all ages, including safety information.
ACTIVE EVERY DAYCanadian kids can move more – especially after school! Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that children and youth get at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily in order to live healthier, happier lives. You heard right – that’s every day. Kids should participate in vigor-ous-intensity activities and muscle- and bone-strengthening activities at least three days per week.
“F” TO “A”Let’s challenge our kids to get more active and see how they measure up. ParticipACTION has provided an activity guide packed with fun ideas for active things to do after school. Your children can do any of these activities on their own or with you, a caregiver or friends. Have your kids track their daily physical activity. At the end of the week, see how many days they’ve hit 60 minutes per day. Use the handy chart to assign a weekly mark.
Get ready, set, go! Look for the activity tracker on the back page of the after-school activity guide. Post one for each child in the house and see who can have the most fun getting an A.
