bringing the fun into fundraising: leader's notes in partnership with www.scouts.org.uk/natwest

IntroductionIt’s through raising money that Scouting can provide its mix of fun and adventure for young people across the UK.

From cake sales to barbecues, sponsored silences to holding a five-a-side football tournament, fundraising can be a great way for Beaver Scouts to make a difference to their local community and support their own activities.

The Scout Association have teamed up with NatWest to produce this resource for Beaver Scouts to help them learn about how to budget and look after money.

It will help you deliver an impartial programme of activities. There is also an activity pack which should be provided to each Beaver as further support. The activities in their packs relate to those outlined here, but parts of them can also be done at home.

These resources should help Beavers to develop confidence in themselves and their own ideas, explore ways of managing their own money, and be great fun.

This pack will help Beavers learn more about:

• What fundraising is and what charities there are in the UK

• The different issues that charities try to resolve

• How to fundraise

It’s part of a series of five NatWest-sponsored activity packs covering a series of money management skills in simple ways to include in your programme:

• Money and your life

• Staying on budget

• Be part of an event

• What is a business?

• Bringing the fun into fundraising

activity: charity true or false How much do your Beavers know about charities and fundraising in the UK?

Now is the time to test their knowledge with our charity true or false game.

how to do the activity

1. Write down the word ‘true’ on one piece of paper and ‘false’ on another. Stick them on opposite walls of the meeting place (5 minutes).

2. Read out the questions below to the Beavers. The Beavers run to one side of the room depending on whether they think the answer is true or false. The Beavers should only have a few seconds to make up their minds.

3. Once the Beavers have made up their minds as to whether a statement is true or false, reveal the answer (15 minutes).

true or false statements

1) Scouting is over 100 years old True. Scouting was formed by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907.

2) 200,000 children live in poverty in the UK False. The figure is 4 million.

3) Poverty means being very poor True. Poverty means not having enough money to be able to make choices or do the things you want to.

4) The largest fundraising charity in the UK is Comic Relief False. The largest fundraising charity in the UK is Cancer Research UK.

5) The London Marathon raised over £50 million for charity in 2011. True. The London Marathon raised £51.8 million for charity in 2011.

6) Scouting is run by volunteers. True.

7) Volunteers get paid to help people. False. Volunteers are people who give their time for free to help people.

8) There are more charities in the UK than you can fit football fans in Wembley Stadium. True.

9) The average person in the UK gives over £10 to charity every month. True. The average person in the UK gives £12 to charity every month.

My dad ran to raise money. It was for Children In Need. I saw him on the TV with Pudsey.

activity: do a good turnThis activity will help the Beaver Scouts to get involved in some fundraising in a simple way.

It will also show them that there are lots of different things they can do to raise money.

how to do the activity

1. Before the meeting, decide on a reason to raise money for the Colony. It could be a for a day trip you want to go on, or for some new equipment.

2. Ask the Beavers to write the reason in the circles on their good turn sheet contained within their activity pack. Or you could ask them to draw a small picture in each circle that represents why they are raising money (10 minutes).

3. When they have all finished, sit them down and talk to them about what a good turn is – it might be helping with the washing-up or helping to clean the house. Also talk about the event or equipment for which they are going to raise the money. Explain that each time they do a good turn at home they should collect and tape a coin to one of the circles on the sheet (10 minutes).

4. The Beavers should then take the sheet home and, after a period of time decided by you, bring it back with the coins taped onto it.

5. Thank the Beaver Scouts and their families for the money.

I help my dad in the garden for pocket money. But if it gets too cold we clean the house.

Fund-raising - do a good turn Fund-raising - poster fun

WORK IN

PROGRESS

bringing the fun into fundraising: leader's notes in partnership with www.scouts.org.uk/natwest

activity: Poster funTo publicise a fundraising event you don’t need fancy equipment or loads of time, you just need some creative ideas.

In this activity the Beaver Scouts can come up with an idea for a poster to promote a fundraising event.

how to do the activity

1. Tell your Beaver Scouts about an upcoming fundraising event for the Scout Group. Maybe you’ve got a cake sale coming up or a barbecue? If you don’t have a real event coming up you can just make one up (5 minutes).

2. Ask the Beaver Scouts to design a poster for the event in the space within their activity packs. Remind them that the poster should be eye catching and tell people something about the event, including the time, the place and the date (15 minutes).

3. Once they have finished make sure you put all the posters up on display in the meeting place, or make colour photocopies of them to use to promote the event.

We held a cake sale. My dad helped me bake a cake for it and I made some posters. We sold them at school to raise money for a trip to London.
