Term 2 Week 8
14 June, 2017
Year 9 Student Cerise Mabbott
becoming a Forensic Scientist for a day.
See the full story on page 7
1. Set Goals. Goal setting is used by top level athletes, successful business people and
achievers in all fields. Setting goals gives you long term vision and short term motivation. By
setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of
those goals. Sometimes, you might be on the wrong path, but just change direction, alternate
the plan, and keep moving towards that goal…and don’t stop until you get there.
SUCCESS
Whether it is Year 12 and the HSC or Year 9 half yearly examinations – this is good advice for all of us who want a chance at success.
3. Phone a Friend. You can learn a lot from others. Find someone who has accomplished what
you want to accomplish and get their advice. If someone has done really well on an assignment
find out how they did it. Your teachers are your best resource for learning but your family and
friends can also help you.
4. Ignore the Naysayers. These are the people who are discouraging to your dreams, visions
and goals. These people are dream snatchers and can put a quick end to your goals and
progress. Don’t let anyone else determine who and what you can be.
5. Celebrate Your Achievements. At school we try and celebrate your success through letters,
awards and presentations. When you achieve your goals celebrate your accomplishments along
the way. Do not be afraid to fail….be more afraid of not trying.
6. Accept Responsibility. It’s not up to someone else to make you successful. You are ultimately
responsible for your own success. Mum and Dad aren’t there to tell you to do your homework -
or remind you to study. Teachers will help you, but only if you ask. They’re not mind-readers.
Accept responsibility for what needs to get done and ask for assistance when needed.
2. Own Your Calendar. Get and use a calendar. Write things down.
Time management is a crucial component to your success. There
are many things to juggle like having assignments due, study time,
social events, exam preparation, part time work and seeing your
family and friends. Establish what needs to be done and then
“chunk” it into manageable pieces each day. Planning ahead will
assist you in not feeling overwhelmed.
7. Stay Positive. You will face many challenges and make mistakes
along the learning journey. All you need to do is learn from your
mistakes and see them not as a negative but something that has
helped your understanding. You need to remain positive and
understand that you might be a beginner today but a world changer tomorrow.
There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.

Mr Seymour’s Weekly Science Fact!
The world’s highest mountain
is Mauna Kea, Hawaii at
10,200 meters from base to
peak. Only the top 4,205
metres is above the ocean, the
rest is underwater. Mount
Everest, at 8,848 metres is the
highest point above sea level.
YEAR 9 FORENSIC SCIENCE INCURSION
Year 9 was recently involved in a Forensic Science incursion in the Hall. They were given the task
of trying to determine the cause of death of a person. Armed with their wits and powers of
deduction the students analysed forensic evidence gathered at and around the crime scene
where the person was found. They compared footprints, fingerprints, DNA, drug analysis, phone
records and other evidence gathered at the scene. Eventually they were able to determine the
events leading up to and probable cause of death of the person.
Well it was a cosy group of seven International Students who took off across the mountains on
Friday to experience the Aussie bush. Blessed with blue skies and not-so-cold weather we
headed into the Blue Mountains.
After a refreshing snooze, whereby the girls magically awoke in the cool surrounds of
Wentworth Falls, we headed down to the track to take in the majesty of these gorgeous falls.
Staggered by the height of the falls we stood amazed and in awe of the swirling cockatoos and
deepening shadows as the sun did its best to touch the valley floor.
Then it was onto the obligatory visit to our splendid Three Sisters, where the girls marvelled at
their distinctive shape contrasted to the blue haze of the Jamieson Valley. Lunch was had in
Katoomba and after seeing the sights we headed back to the bus for another refreshing
snooze.
Although, my sleeping beauties managed to sleep their way through the stunning Magpie
Hollow Rd and Mutton Falls Way, they did wake once again in time to see our stop for the night,
Yarrabin, reveal its cosy self as we rounded the final bend on our journey.
Not wanting to miss the opportunity to watch the sun go down over Western NSW, we walked
up Burns Rd to the crest. A 360 degree view over O’Connell and out to Bathurst was enhanced
by the gentle sounds of the Aussie bush getting ready for sleep. A soft breeze and the bleating
of sheep with the back notes of a currawong heralded the close of day. We wished upon the
first star, waited for the Southern Cross to show us the way and then we headed back to Yarrabin for dinner.
International Students go Bush
After a hearty breakfast the girls donned riding gear
and met their horses. Blaze, Bailey, Dan and
others carried us through the forest of golden
gums. We learnt to trot and to control our steads
and even managed to disturb a small mob of greys.
The sun shone, the breeze was kind and we
relaxed to the gentle rhythm of our horses.

Barrenjoey’s Mobile Phone Policy
The School recognises that there are times when it is genuinely appropriate and useful
for students to have access to a mobile phone or similar electronic device – for example,
to contact parents in emergencies or to confirm or change a collection time after school.
It is not necessary, nor acceptable, however, for mobile phones to be switched on or used
during lessons.
The following ‘common sense’ rules apply with respect to mobile phones:
•Courtesy, consideration of and respect for others are paramount at all times.
•They are brought to and kept at school, and used entirely at the owner’s risk. The School
cannot accept any responsibility for theft, loss, damage or health effects (potential or
actual) resulting from mobile phone use. Students and parents should recognise,
however, that mobile phones are a highly prized target for theft and, accordingly, phones
should always be stored in a safe and secure place.
•Parents and students are asked to respect the learning environment. Mobile phones, like
all devices, must be used only under teacher direction for educational purposes. They
should not be used in any manner or place that is disruptive to the normal routines of the
School or to other people. This includes the sending and receiving of phone calls, text
messages or data, taking of photographs or video or using social media.
•These guidelines also refer to the use of mobile phones during field trips, detentions,
excursions or other supervised activities.
The following consequences may apply to policy breaches:
•Confiscation by the teacher for the remainder of the lesson and a negative Sentral entry.
•Repeat offences lead to confiscation for the day. The phone is sent to the front office.
The phone will be secured by the Front Office staff and the student’s name will be
recorded. The phone/device will be signed out to the student at the end of the school day.
•More serious offences will be managed under the Barrenjoey Wellbeing Policy.
