Term 4 Week 2
22nd October, 2020
WELCOME BACK TO TERM 4
Dear Parents/Carers and the Barrenjoey High School Community,
Welcome back to school for an exciting and productive Term 4! Schools are typically busy
during this time with the completion of units of work for the year, marking assessments, writing
reports and continuing to support the wellbeing and learning needs of all students.
Thank you for all of your warm welcomes for my recent
appointment as your new Principal. The Department of Education
has a very thorough process of appointing Principals to schools
and it is an absolute privilege and pleasure to have been offered
this position. I have worked across numerous schools throughout
my career, including full and partial selective schools,
comprehensive co-educational and single-sex schools and
schools that require high levels of wellbeing and learning support,
therefore, I hope to bring this broad educational experience to
Barrenjoey High School.
My wife also works in education and our families have a long history of teaching. I am a strong
advocate of Public Education and have had the absolute privilege of having worked with Ian
Bowsher and other members of Barrenjoey High School prior to my arrival. I have always been
inspired by the great work that school has achieved, the strong belief in the well-rounded student
and the positive parent/carer support throughout the journey of their child’s schooling. I hope tocontinue this culture of the school in years to come.
Some parents have already asked me what my vision is for the future of the school – my answer to
them was simple, “it’s a shared one!”. As a Principal, my job is to continue to create the conditions
to unleash the potential of all staff, students and the wider school community to enhance and
improve teaching and learning outcomes. My overall goal and vision is to continue to offer the
widest possible curriculum, ensuring that students have the option of learning a diverse range of
subjects to drive their passion and commitment for deep learning. My desire is to see students to
continue to strive for excellence, to be well-informed global citizens, with a strong sense of social
justice and be ready for whatever lies ahead of them for their future careers and personal lives.
Here at Barrenjoey High School, we have already created a strong basis that supports students in
unlocking their potential and ensuring that they are respecting their learning environment, being
punctual and ready for class and striving for continuous improvement, through our Positive
Behaviour for Learning values. What I would like to see, is the continued tapping in to the minds of
the future – the students. With innovative learning structures like the already created Senior
Flexible day, what other curriculum opportunities would students like to see in the school, perhaps
learning together with students across Year groups and Stages, extending their knowledge and
experiences, and forming mentoring and leadership roles supporting other students with their
learning?
I am an avid life-long learner who continually likes to improve my own working practices. My
leadership style is to support staff along their professional career, whether that be exploring the
authentic teaching and learning experiences, having access to the latest technological devices
and supporting staff with their administration, organisational, professional development and
leadership aspirations. My goal and vision is to continue to work with teaching and non-teaching
staff, ensuring that this workplace is a school that encourages difference of opinion whilst
maintaining mutual respect, having a workplace that is a safe and supportive and one that
continues to celebrate the teaching and learning experiences created by our staff.
I am looking forward to meeting you
all, especially when we beat this
crazy pandemic and we can start
having you back on the school
grounds and celebrating the
wonderful work of your
children/wards with our staff.
Finally, as I write this welcome, our
Year 12 are commencing their first
HSC examination, an exciting and
nervous time for them, especially
due to this challenging year. We wish
them all the best for the coming
weeks and look forward to
celebrating their achievements later
in the year.

On Wednesday 24th September, our Barrenjoey Junior
Debating team won their final round-robin debate against
Pittwater High School! In this final debate for the term,
Barrenjoey argued the negative that Year 7 and 8 students
should learn self-defence at school.
It was an extremely close debate and Barrenjoey effectively
argued some strong points around promoting non-violent
behaviour and the importance of learning how to defend
one’s self against cyberbullying rather than physical attacks,
as this is a more prevalent issue.
Congratulations to the entire Junior Debating team on a
successful season!

CURIOUS CREATURES WILD MINDS
Welcome to Book Week 2020. Taking a look at our favourite reads, it does seem that our staff are
very curious and do indeed have wild minds.
As an English teacher, reading is like eating for me. It is the stuff that nourishes my mind and heart.
The pathos of John Steinbeck’s writing infused itself into my bones and since then I have always
seen books as a window into one’s soul. After Steinbeck came Dickens. I know he can take a page
to describe, what others might only be bothered to pen in a line or two – but that detail! Those
insights! That humour! It’s worth wading through every word. It seems many of us have loved “Boy
Swallows Universe”, “Harry Potter”, “Pillars of the Earth” and some excellent non-fiction choices
too such as “Dark Emu”.
Ms Boardman and I have had a wonderful time compiling our colleagues’ Book Week posters. We
have been delighted by some of their choices, amused and bemused by others and gone back
down memory lane with quite a few.
This week the students are able to see into the curious and wild minds of their teachers and school
support staff by merely walking from one classroom to another. Each classroom door is adorned
with the covers of a range of familiar favourites and yet to be discovered treasures.
So join our ‘book club’ and pick up a book. Who knows what delights are inscribed within its
covers?

Happy Reading!
ECOJOEY
OUR PLAN AND OUR ACTION
A Plastic ocean
Soft plastic is extremely lightweight and easily makes its way to the ocean. By 2025, there will be
one tonne of plastic for every three tonne of fish. Imagine a world where there is more plastic in
the ocean than fish.
Barrenjoey High School have joined a like-minded community of waste warriors committed to
reducing plastic pollution in the ocean.
We have now installed a soft plastics bin in B Block which is collected weekly by our ECOJOEY
student leaders and taken to REDCYCLE at Avalon Woolworths.
We aim to collect soft plastic to remove it from our landfill and use it as a resource. Our plan is to
purchase outdoor seating made from soft plastics.
Please feel free to drop off soft plastics to our bin – We want to think of this waste as a resource,
not just landfill.
Use the following information sheets to see what you can drop off in our soft plastics bin.
This year's theme is
'INTO THE WILD'.
We invite students in 2020 to
explore this theme in imaginative
and original ways in their
compositions. The term 'wild' can
be applied equally to animal,
human, and setting, offering many
creative possibilities for
interpreting this brief.

LEARNING HUB LOWDOWN
The Learning Hub is buzzing in Term 4 with Year 12’s making the most of last week, studying,
completing practice tests and consolidating notes in the Senior Study. All the staff in the
Learning Hub wish them the best for their HSC and study spaces will continue to be available
for them throughout the next 4 weeks.
Now that we have been running for a term we’re finally getting to the finer details of decorating
with the addition of plants in the Hub. The benefits of plants in learning spaces are numerous.
They:
reduce stress
increase productivity
reduce sickness and absence rates
make workspaces more attractive
clean the air
reduce noise levels boost creativity
We’ve been lucky
enough to start our
collection with a few
donations and we
would love to
continue to build on
this. If any parents
have hardy indoor
plants that we can
put on display to
enhance our
student’s learning
environment, please
bring any donations to the front office.

Did you know that there are many rare elements used inside mobile phones including gold, copper,
silver, lithium and cobalt. These elements have to be mined – but supplies are limited. Coltran is an
example of a mineral being mined in central Africa, but gorillas’ forest homes are being destroyed
to support the growing mobile phone industry.
Recycling your mobile phone can help to reduce demand for these rare elements, and also save
gorilla habitats.
SRC – DO YOU HAVE AN OLD MOBILE PHONE?
The Barrenjoey SRC
and Ecojoey are keen
to support Taronga
Zoo’s phone recycling
initiative. All you need
to do is bring in your
old mobile phones to
the office at
Barrenjoey and we will
do the rest! Let’s see
how many mobile
phones we can recycle
in Term 4. We are
setting our target at100.

BARRENJOEY BEES – Introducing our new Queens!
This week, I moved a swarm that I managed to trap during the holidays
into one of our hives this week. (B1) This swarm was Queenless so it
was necessary to purchase a mated Queen to continue the colony.
On Thursday morning Queen Milena was installed and should be
released by the workers over the weekend and she should quickly go
to work laying eggs to build up her colony. Keep up the great work
Queen Milena! Such a buzzy bee!
Our second Hive (B2) has a swarm of bees that were collected
from outside the Avalon Post Office and kindly donated by Giles
Stoddard of Avalon Honey. It’s new Queen Bee - Queen Claire
seems to have taken a liking to her new residence and is very
busy making herself a home!
Well done Queen Claire!

UNDER 15 MANLY SHIELD CRICKET
Early rain delayed the start of play in our game played at Kitchener Park, Mona Vale on
Monday 19 October. Sadly, what followed was a procession of 8 ducks, sadly trudging off the
field, without troubling the scorer. Thankfully, sundries of 17 was boosted by some
unconventional batting & entertaining commentary from Matt Challis, who batted throughout
most of our innings & top scored with with 9 not out. Hunter Meredith hit our solitary boundary
on his way to scoring the remaining 5 runs Barrenjoey scored while amassing a total of 30.
Mater Maria passed our paltry total with a minimum of difficulty, assisted by some
very ordinary fielding early on. An improved focus in the field, resulted in 2 impressive run outs
by Nick Hope and Harley Vallis, capably assisted by great glove work from our wicket keeper,
Lucas Hamann. Sam Pace bowled particularly well & was unlucky to secure only one wicket.
Other wicket takers were Hunter Meredith (2), Finn Arnold with his tweakers & Nick Hope.
Good bowling performances were also displayed by Sam Cooper, Harley Vallis, Oscar
Haynes, Charlie Ward, Josh Tallis and Riley Osborn who did a fine job as Skipper.
The shot of the day was undoubtedly the amazing effort of Nick Hope landing his cap perfectly
on the melon of Mr Scheffers.
To all players, many thanks for your efforts today. Your energy, enthusiasm, cooperation,
sportsmanship & positive attitude were greatly appreciated. Despite the result, it was anabsolute pleasure to enjoy a day of cricket with you. Player of the Match – The Duck!
