Investiture of the 2020 Captains, Vice Captains and Senior Leaders

Student leadership has a high profile at Barrenjoey and our senior school students are pivotal in

setting the tone of the school, creating a positive culture and in enhancing our school spirit and

pride.

Congratulations to the following students who were inducted as the Senior Leaders for 2020 at the Investiture Assembly on September 2.

Alannah Amet

Euan Bates

Zoe Coles

Maja Dalby-Ball Olsen

Will Vallis

In describing themselves for the purpose of the selection process these young people defined

their best features, they commented on the importance of role modelling and promotion of

‘worthy causes’ but… I heard them speak of another point, which is equally important amongst

strong leaders…. selflessly giving of themselves to continually advance the Barrenjoey culture

while being brave enough to challenge the status quo and promise to change the things that

may need changing.

At Monday’s Investiture Assembly the Student Leaders recited the Leadership Pledge, some of which I have included below, as it is a challenge attainable by all Barrenjoey students…

Congratulations

“…and do my best at all times to promote the best interests of my fellow students…

I will set a good example in both word and deed

And I will willingly work with teachers, parents

And students to maintain and promote the good name of

Barrenjoey High School.”

Five weeks ago prospective leaders presented their speeches to the entire Formal Assembly.

Following those speeches the staff, SRC, Executive and students voted for their preferred

Captains and Vice Captains.

I have the privilege to announce these office bearers.

Captains for 2020 will be: Vice Captains for 2020 will be:

Zoe Coles and Euan Bates Maja Dalby-Ball Olson and April Oliver

Zoe EuanAprilMajaI’d like to thank the out-going Captains; Heidi Wiseman and Flynn Maynard, Vice Captains;

Skye Holloway and Zoe Kemp and the other 8 Senior Leaders Lachlan Bates, Ella Brady,

Fergus Cole, Elena Newlyn, Cherie Pont, Layla Salz, Isabella Turner and Zoe Whitlock for being such fine examples to their peers and younger students.

Successful leaders make a difference. I am sure that everyone is aware that our 2019 Senior

Leaders were symbols of a maturing Barrenjoey. The way they conducted themselves at

school, running assemblies, promoting the uniform, acting as role models, representing

Barrenjoey at community and public events such as the ANZAC Day’s Dawn Service and

through organising ‘fundraising’ and promotional initiatives…. most notably this group of leaders

were responsible for surveying the student body to focus the light on needed change while

continuing Barrenjoey’s focus on constant improvement.

You have led well… congratulations!

Have a great week everyone... Ian Bowsher

The Raise Foundation is assisting

adolescents across Pittwater reach their

full potential, providing school students

with volunteer mentors to guide them

through their troubles.

Vicki Condon AM (founder of the Raise

Foundation 2008) wants adolescents to

become ‘resilient, capable and connected’

through the help of the Raise Foundation.

Volunteers needed!

Becoming a mentor is easy – just fill in the application form online and complete the compulsory six

hours of online training then one day of face-to-face training. Mentors are then matched by a

Raise-employed, highly qualified program counsellor to an adolescent from a school close by.

At the moment the foundation has 4,000 volunteer mentors throughout Australia, with many in the

Pittwater Region. Barrenjoey High School has been involved with this program since the beginning

in 2008 and have helped hundreds of students. They are aiming to recruit more than 15,000

volunteers from the community. It’s concept is simple – once a week, on the same day, a mentor

sits with a student to “chat about really anything and everything” The pair set goals together, and

the mentor provides advice, just listens, builds up the student’s confidence, helps them work on

resilience and a whole lot more.

For more information on Raise Foundation or to volunteer please phone: 0406 412 376 or

SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH – PRACTICE JOURNEY

Last week eleven Silver Duke of Edinburgh students along with Ms Clark, successfully completed

their first canoeing trip for the Adventurous Journey component of the Award. The group started

on Wednesday and finished on Friday afternoon at Wisemans Ferry.

The first day the group battled against the strong tides and the wind when travelling to our first

campsite. There were many squeals about the wind capsizing the canoes. After the wind settled

down we finally arrive at our campsite where we all set up our tents and cooked dinner. We were

all exhausted and keen to get into our warm sleeping bags and get out of the wind so we had an

early night.

The second day had a slight change. Due to the strong winds, the group couldn’t canoe to our

next campsite. It was a very windy morning, so we decided as a group to wait till the wind dies

down before going canoeing. While we waited we did dry capsize drills and teamwork scenarios.

Finally the winds settled down and it was time to go canoeing. We all geared up and set off on a

little adventure. The scenery was amazing! The red cliff faces surrounding us, we saw many

jellyfish and even cows. The group found a tunnel in the mangroves, where it really put our

canoeing skills to test, going through narrow paths, having to go under tree branches and having

to dodge rocks. The tide started to rise, so we quickly had to canoe back to the campsite. As the

sun started to set, we all cooked dinner and planned out the next day.

As it started to get dark and there was no wind, the group all agreed on going on a night canoe.

Everyone was very excited, so we all put warm clothes on, grabbed our head torches, all geared

up and were ready to go. The moon on the water was amazing, we all raft up and turned our head

torches off and listened to the night wildlife and looked at the stars. We paddle back to camp, put

all the equipment away and then got into our warm clothes and beds.

The third and final day saw us paddling with the tide, no wind and the sun!!! Hurrah! The morning

started off a little bit colder than the other mornings with frost on some of our tents, but it warmed

up quickly with the sun and no wind. It was an amazing day and perfect conditions to canoe in.

We are packed up and started our journey back to Wisemans Ferry. We were all sad that the trip

was over, excited for a warm shower and cosy beds and full of the best memories!

Year 12 Construction

During Week 6, Barrenjoey’s Year 12

Construction class completed one of

their final practical assessment

tasks. This involved preparing,

placing and finishing a concrete slab.

This new pathway is now operational

and allows access down the eastern

side of A Block and is one of the

many yearly activities to enrich

VET learning experiences of our

students. This task is the culmination

of almost 2 years of study learning

and engaging in a variety of skills

and content relevant to the

construction industry and is a great

course if students are considering

entering this field, post education."
