BARRENJOEY SUPPORTS FIRE-RAVAGEDMOGO PUBLIC SCHOOL

On Thursday 20th February, Barrenjoey High School came together to support Mogo Public

School. Local bands, The Rions and Marvell performed for over 200 students in the school

hall. The highlight of the evening was both bands performing Marvell’s hit, Come a Little

Closer. Jesse from Marvell said the band was thrilled to participate in the evening and have

built a close bond with The Rions over the last year. Noah Buckley from The Rions felt that the

hall “went off!” for both bands.

Kalinda Hawson, P&C President said “for some of these kids it is their first rock concert. Year

7s and Year 12s were all in the ‘mosh pit’ dancing together. So thrilling to see.”

The other thrill of the night was how many people donated their time so freely. Seventeen

teachers from Barrenjoey attended to help run the event, Barrenjoey parents were there too.

Duncan Ritchie donated all his lighting and sound equipment and time to ensure that the night

looked and sounded incredible. Both bands appeared without a fee. Ronny Berg from Creek

Street Photography came and captured the bands and students so we will have professional

photos of the night. The SRC students cooked the bbq and donated all their time and money

from the sales for the evening. Retro Birdie donated the profits from the sale of ice-creams.

Mogo Public School students and staff were affected by the recent bushfires and Barrenjoey

Principal, Ian Bowsher, contacted Mogo Principal, Lyndall Schuchmann, to offer financial

support for the kids.

Mogo Public School is a 150 year old timber built school surrounded by old growth forest that

the kids lovingly called the 'enchanted forest'. The school has 33 students from K-6 including

12 Aboriginal students, 3 classes, 4 teachers and two Admin / support staff. It is a very tight

community.

When the fires came the fire trucks spent 3 hours continuously spraying water on the heritage

timber buildings to save them which they managed to do. As Lyndall explained the 'fire lick'

marks are all over the blistered paint - it came that close.

While the school buildings were saved the town and surrounding bush was destroyed. The

school lost their heritage forest and all its gardens (it is simply a small cluster of buildings in a

black landscape). The chicken coop and outdoor learning space which the kids loved were

also obliterated. Six of the school kids lost their homes and almost all other families homes

were damaged in some way or another.

To help the students, the school has created a Breakfast Club for all, the students have lunch

packs made for them and costs associated with fees, book packs, photographs and

swimming carnival have all been waived.

The Today show donated $60k to establish the gardens, and in an act of generosity and a

lesson for its children the school community has decided to 'give back' by growing vegetables

in the new gardens so they can give the produce to the Mogo Zoo which is also in ongoing

need of support and care for its animals.

'It was lovely having so many people come in and help and understand the philosophy of this

garden, which is all about giving back, Ms Schuchmann said.

'We feel so fortunate to have so many people that wanted to help us and we felt it was

important that this garden is all about giving - giving edible plants for animals to Mogo Zoo,

giving to the school canteen, and giving produce to the students and their families.'

As the Mogo kids lost their Christmas holidays Barrenjoey was asked to donate the funds

raised on the night to give all the kids and staff a Big Day Out. We are aiming to pay for bus

hire, food and a comedy show in Nowra.

The P&C raised $2500, and this week Peter M read that we had a short fall and came into the

school and generously donated $500 bringing the total to $3,000. The children will get their

day out! What a wonderful community we have!

SWIMMING CARNIVAL – What an awesome day!

Congratulations to all the students and staff who attended yesterday’s

Swimming Carnival at Ku-Ring-Gai Fitness Centre. It was a great turn out

from all years 411 students. With the wonderful weather, bright Hawaiian

theme the students got into the spirit and had a wonderful time. Here is a

breakdown of how many students attended yesterday. Well done! Lets aim

for lots more next year!All the results from yesterday’s carnival

will be in next week’s Peninsula Press.

FEEL GOOD STORY – Congratulations Fynn Year 7

To The Principal - Barrenjoey High School,

This morning while walking to school in Park Avenue, a student in

Year 7 from your school noticed an expensive Fitbit sports watch on

the nature strip outside my house. The student's name was Fynn

and he was part of a group of young BHS boys and girls on their

way to school.

Fynn knocked on the door to report his find. As it turned out the

watch belonged to a neighbour so I was able to return it.

As a retired teacher, who did a practice teaching stint at Barrenjoey

in the 1970s, and subsequently taught on the Northern beaches for

many years I was most impressed with the honesty and public

spiritedness of your well dressed students. You and your staff are to

be congratulated.

YEAR 8 – FUTURE PROOFING STUDY

Dear Parents and Carers,

We’re excited to announce that our school will be participating in Australia’s largest ever

wellbeing trial for high schoolers. We’ll be working with the Black Dog Institute and UNSW

alongside more than 100 other schools to build the most comprehensive picture yet of the

mental health and wellbeing of Australian teenagers.

The ‘Future Proofing Study’ is kicking off at the beginning of Term 2. As this is a large

population-based trial, all Year 8 are encouraged to sign up. Students in the trial will complete

mental health programs using apps and complete surveys at school about their health and

wellbeing until Year 12.

Students will need parent permission and a smartphone to participate.

The research team at Black Dog will be hosting several live webinars for parents to learn more

BARRENJOEY P & C NEWS

The Barrenjoey P&C met last week and Ian Bowsher presented the start of the school

year. Changes to staffing and the HSC results. Changes to assessments for 2020 along with

examination changes.

Other points of interest were:

• Working Bee – First Working Bee is set for Saturday 28 March

• New Parent Welcome evening – was in the Performance Space. There was a good

turnout of people and a presentation was made to all the new parents showing the ways to

interact with the school via the website, intranet and parent portal. Thank you to Nicki

Inger, Simon Bateson, Christy Bishop, Susie Thompson and Jenny Parkes for help in

running the event. Special thanks to all the teachers who attended.

• Little Shop of Horrors – Barrenjoey will be holding a stage show in Term 3 21-31stJuly

• Full Moon Market, Music by the Sea – August 28th

• March 11 – Koko – Family Movie Night. Bring cushions or bean bags, enjoy a sausage

sizzle and ice-cream. Tissues will be supplied!

Band Report – the Band reported the Number of students in Concert Band 46 including 16 year

7 students. Good mix of years 7-12 and nice balance of instruments. Performance planning for

the year is in progress and a calendar of performance dates including tour will be made available

to parents later this term. Tour dates and location currently being discussed.

BEST START – YEAR 7 (on tomorrow)

Dear Parents and Carers,

Best Start Year 7 is an online assessment for students that helps provide information for teachers on the

literacy and numeracy skills of students at the beginning of Year 7.

The Best Start Year 7 assessment will take place at our school on Thursday 27th February in class

time.

The assessment, covers key literacy and numeracy skills that are important to a student’s success in all

subjects in high school. Students come to high school with a range of experiences, skills and abilities in

literacy and numeracy. It is important that teachers have current information about their students so that

they can plan programs and lessons that best support the learning needs of every student.

There are two online tests which take 40mins each. The first test will be a literacy test and take place in

period 2. The second test will be a numeracy test and take place in period 3.

Students will need to bring their BYOD device, fully charged, and a set of headphones. If a student

does not have a device, one will be provided for them.

No preparation is needed for this assessment. Its purpose is to provide our teachers with additional

information to best support the teaching of your child.
