We don’t want to drown in taxes

Whenever anyone asks me what I think needsto be done to salvage our sector I say that we needto get the Italian economy back on its feet. Without the supportof a healthy economy it is hard to imagine citizens feeling secureenough to purchase a boat or any other kind of “toy.” The recipeof the experts, economic op-ed writers in particular, who spendtheir time preaching and writing articles in important financialnewspapers instead of actually doing anything, have so far castthemselves as bankruptcy administrators and have brought usto where we are today. I, whounderstand very little abouteconomics, think that if we donot make some drastic cuts inpublic spending and lowertaxes, we are not going to getvery far. Italy rates fifth to laston the chart of fiscal oppres-sion. A negative record, asusual. Out of 83 countries, Italycame in 79th: out of EU countries, only Belgium and Germanyare worse off, or rather were worse off, now that “Monti’s cure”has left us worse off than even Germany. In Italy only 56% ofincome ends up in the workers’ pockets, after which he still hasto pay property, gasoline, TV, automobile taxes and so forth. In Chile, Hong Kong, Korea, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Tai-wan, and even Venezuela, workers pocket more than 80%. InArgentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, The Czech Republic, Esto-nia, Japan, New Zealand, over 70%. In Austria, France, Ireland,Israel, Luxemburg, Holland, Spain, the UK and the USA, about65%, like in the ex-socialist paradises of Northern Europe: Fin-land, Norway, Denmark, Sweden. In 93% of countries, the statewithholds less than 40%: we are on the tail-end with the other7%. If we take all the possible deductions into consideration, which are minimal in Italy, we slip down even further on the list.I don’t know about Croatia and Slovenia, the other two coun-tries on the bottom of the list with us, but it is well known that inBelgium and Germany citizens pay a lot, but see it pay off in

terms of services and infrastructure, to the contrary of our expe-rience here in Italy. The highest costs for the worst services: ifthe country of Italy were a business, it would have been forcedto close down long ago. We are not only victims of fiscaloppression; we are also severely penalized by a convoluted andinefficient bureaucracy. Entrepreneurs in Italy have to wend theirway through lengthy, inefficient and expensive processes, in par-ticular if they need to go to court or get building permits. Add tothis the uniquely Italian propensity to approach things obliquely,

to slip through the cracks andavoid being clear, linear, direct.I happened to be present, dur-ing NavigaMI, the excellentevent held yearly on the Naviglicanal system in Milan, whensomeone was asking the priceof a rubber raft. “Excuse me,I’d like to know the cost of a 4-5 meter dinghy.” Already the

use of the term “dinghy” says a lot about this potential boater’sexperience, but what got me thinking was that to the initial ask-ing price, calculated on the spot, you would need to add thecosts of the boarding ladder and other accessories required forrafting, like for example an outboard motor and the VAT taxes. The potential rafter thanked the man and left. I doubt he will everpurchase a raft. Without blaming the person promoting his prod-uct, because that’s they way everybody does it, I thought thatthose of us who actually know how it is - and when I say “us” Imean those who work at the magazines, the boatyards, thedealerships and institutions of the sector - we need to be clear-er and more direct about the costs involved in owning a boat. Ifyou go to a car dealer, he doesn’t say that the car costs tenthousand euros, but then you have to add the cost of the tires, the emergency warning triangle, the steering wheel and salestax. Why not sell turn-key, package-deal, ready-to-sail boats? It would be a sign of transparency and maturity in our industry.

Francesco Michienzi

“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in abucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.” Winston Churchill

counsel almost exclusively of their ownprejudices and whims.”

Plastic andOceansThe idea of Boyan Slat, anaerospace engineeringstudent in theNetherlands as young as19-years old, couldchange the future ofmarine pollution causedby plastic. Ocean CleanupArray is the name of thisambitious project, is asystem which wouldallow the removal ofdebris from the five oceantrash vortexes, takingadvantage of the circularcurrents and making useof a fleet of platforms, equipped with enormousfloating booms whichforce the accumulation ofplastic in their direction. At this point, they wouldbe separated by plankton, filtered and gathered intoa recycling container.Using beams instead ofthe nets usually used toclean water would alsoprotect marine life frombeing captured, as themovement of the forks, guided by the currents, would be slow enough toallow the organismsenough time to flee. Theplatforms could bepowered by sun, currentand wave energy. A keyfeature of the system liesin the fact that theplatforms do not interferewith the passage of ships, for example arrangingthem parallel to the route.

Increasingly “protected”mammals

Sea Lions in the USA2013 in the United States is, unfortunately, a record year for sealion strandings. The scientists of the National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration (NOAA) still do not know the rea-son why almost 1,300 sick specimens ending up stranded onthe coast of Southern California since the beginning of the year. They are for the most part baby sea lions born last summer andfound in a dire state of malnutrition: some specimens weigh lessthan 9 kilograms, whereas they should way over 22. This is anunprecedented fact that reminded researchers of the peak seenin California in 1998, from the warming of waters caused byEl Niño.

The Marine Mammals Protection Act (a law enacted inthe United States with the aim of protecting whales, dolphins, seals and other marine mammals) has

realized important results, as shown by a recent report.According to this publication, the law, which wasenacted in 1972 by Nixon, has preventedextinctions which had seemed by that point unavoidable, prohibiting the hunting, capturing and “molesting” ofmarine mammals. Examining the data of the populations ofover 200 specimens, the scientists discovered that while forsome species the road towards recovery is still long, othershave experienced a new growth. “We saw notablerecoveries of some populations, such as the gray seals ofNew England and lions and marine elephants along thePacific Coast,” said Andrew Read, professor of biology atDuke University of Durham.

The Chinese boat market

ARCHEB34 June 2013

Although the effects of the international eco-nomic crisis have been felt here, too, the Chi-nese shipbuilding industry continues to grow. The demand for recreational craft continues to rise, as evi-denced by import and export data. The internal market, inturn, is experiencing an increase in production with manydomestic boat builders exhibiting new models at boat showsaround the country. China is currently one of the three countries in the world with thegreatest number of shipyards devoting much of their productionto manufacturing pleasure boats. Many of these shipbuildingcompanies are foreign-owned (including the ones in Hong Kongand Taiwan) or belong to the state. The small to medium sizedyards specialize in turning out a large number of boats (fromsmall fishing boats to day cruisers). Chinese production is basi-cally competitive only for boats less than 24 meters in length,

since building larger craft requires a higher level of competencethan most Chinese shipyards are capable of yet. Most of the production facilities are concentrated in the east-ern regions, Shandong and Guangdong, specifically in thecities of Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai (Shandong) and Zhuhaiand Shenzhen (Guangdong).According to international standards, the quality of yachtsproduced in China is still considered low, but local compa-nies are very rapidly acquiring cutting-edge technologiesenabling them to compete with countries all over the worldat every level, even in design. The hardware and accessories industry, however, already hasan excellent market share, especially thanks to lower pro-duction costs compared to other countries. China is not onlymanufacturing small, on-board hardware, but also engines(although 80% of these are still imported), electronics,

Import-exportSince 2010, imports and exports have been recording sig-nificant growth. The European crisis has not affected themarket especially for imports, which grew by 45.2%, from161.02 million dollars in 2011 to 233.80 million dollars in

2012. The total number of importedyachts in China is 3,144, coming

from 33 countries, with mostof them being purchased in

boats.Imports of pleasure yachts for a

country like China are relatively small, for a variety of rea-sons including the fact that many owners buy and use theirboats in Hong Kong (excluded from Chinese statistics),and many distributors, therefore, tend to be based in HongKong. Italy’s pleasure boat exports to China valued 62,820,000dollars, or 26.9% of total imports, establishing itself as amajor importer, with 67 (an increase of 59.5%) yachtsimported here in 2012. Half of these were small yachts, while the other half ranged between small to mediumsized, with 84.6% motoryachts, 14.8% dinghies and 0.7%sailboats. As far as sales are concerned, the market is dominat-ed by distributors and agents acting both locally and spread-ing into regions where pleasure boating is concentrated. Many, however, are close to Hong Kong, where many cus-tomers have their place of business and often, consequent-ly, where they prefer to keep their yachts. Even though theboating industry is rapidly expanding, there is a shortage ofexperienced salespeople, with adequate knowledge andexperience of the industry and of the boats themselves.

importation of Chinese-made products, for a value of 4.23million euro. Exports increased by 17%, from 223.85 million in 2011, to261.97 million in 2012. Most of this increase can be attrib-uted to exports of small to medium boats, superyachts, and also to a great extent, to foreign investment in jointventures or WFOE (Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise).Small boats, jet skis and dinghies (which fall into the"other" category on the graphs) account for 51% ofexports, while 39% are dinghies, 7% are sailboats and only

3% motor yachts. The five top rankingdestinations for exports are the

USA, Hong Kong, Australia,Russia and the UK. In partic-

ular, America remains at theforefront of countriesimporting from China, reaching 54.56 million dol-

lars (+6%) in 2012. Italy is in15th place (up from 8th in

2011), representing 1.6% ofexports for 4.23 million dollars.

Opportunity AnalysisChina could potentially be a strong production base withits benefits of reduced labor and production costs, asmuch as 20-30% lower than in Europe or the U.S. Thedomestic market is recovering remarkably well from theperiod of crisis which began in 2009, and is expected tocontinue to grow substantially over the next decade. costs that this country offers is an excellent opportunity forthis sector, especially for superyacht production, which hasyet to be developed here. The long term prospects pres-ent an enticing challenge for Italian players, keeping inmind the strong support local government offers themarine industry and the exponential growth of individ-uals with a high income. The difficulty for those who want to investin this country lies in the fact that fewChinese, even if they could afford to,buy yachts, but the interest in thissector is undoubtedly growing. There are many divergencesbetween the tastes of Chinese andWestern boat owners (for example, inChina the boats are used as “entertain-ment centers” with gaming tables andkaraoke). In general, China is not perceived by American and Euro-pean boat owners as capable of offering high quality prod-uct, making it difficult to provide short-term guidance forpurchasing decisions in this area. However, there arealready several foreign-owned boat yards here ready torespond to possible increase in demand for boats by Chi-nese customers. Therefore proper evaluation must bemade regarding increased competitiveness on the onehand and, on the other hand, the high rate of importation(40%).

There are a variety of options to be considered beforeestablishing a business in China. Creating a partnershipwith distributors or setting up branch office are interesting,low-risk ways to enter the market giving you help youunderstand and evaluate the market directly. You can alsoset up a FICE (Foreign Invested Commercial Enterprise), a

WFOE or a joint venture, giving the company a greatdeal of control over supply and distribution

around China. This is also a useful long termstrategy for manufacturing directly in China. In conclusion, here are few general obser-vations: yachting in China is still at an earlystage but interest is growing and bringingwith it an increase in the number of clubs,

boat shows and marinas under construction. The number of yachts being exported in recent

years has also been on the rise (except in 2009),especially small-medium hulls. Foreign investors are

taking advantage of the lower labor costs and betting onfuture success. Naturally, they still need to improve thequality of products, but there is no doubt that great stridesare already being made especially within larger companiesin China. European boat builders have been approachingthis market looking to establish joint ventures with localcompanies, not only for manufacturing but also in terms ofdesign and cutting-edge technology. This phenomenon ison the rise and is a clear indication of the probable trendsover the next few years.

This is the second time that LunaRossa has triumphed in theNeapolitan city and the five crew memberswho sailed the Swordfish to victory were hailedlike stars by spectators with even greater enthu-siasm than last year. The circuit of regattasknown as the “world series” saw AC45 multihullyachts compete in a variety of locations aroundthe world, getting the teams ready for the LouisVuitton Cup, the Defender Series (if necessary)

and for the finals of the America’s Cup. Each portion of theACWS is made up of both fleet and match races, putting the

With a wing-sail over 20 meters high, she handles extremely wellthrough a wide wind range, from 5 to 30 knots. Whilecapable of closing speeds of up to 30 knots, the AC45was designed to remain nimble enough to handle thetight race courses planned by America’s Cup RaceManagement (ACRM). The challenge was to design aboat that would not only meet the racing criteria, butcould also fit inside a 40-foot container, which is theshipping vessel for the America’s Cup World Series.

Slingsby, in the match race finale. “This win was the only way toforget our mistake in the match racing,” said Bruni, “The fleet racewin really means a lot to me. We had an opportunity for the dou-ble win, but just missed out. I can’t thank my crew enough, PaulCampbell-James, Max Sirena, Xabi Fernandez and Manuel Mod-ena. They did a great job today.” Slingsby delivered on his stated goal: to secure the overall2012-2013 America’s Cup World Series season championshipfor ORACLE TEAM USA, all the more satisfying as that cham-pionship was paired with winning match racing title as well.Ending in second place in the overall classification of the 2012-2013 circuit was the Luna Rossa Piranha. Under the leadershipof Chris Draper, the crew triumphed in the Neapolitan waterslast year, winning fourth position in the fleet race there this year.“Based on the results the day before, we had been hoping todo better,” said helmsman Draper, “but we are very pleased inany case to have mounted the podium of the America’s CupWorld Series 2012-2013, since the competition was particularlytough.”Patrizio Bertelli, Team Principal of the Luna Rossa Challenge2013, had this to say, “I am very pleased with the progress theteam made during the training period in New Zealand and, besides the results, I really appreciated Francesco Bruni’s startin the final match race.” On the dais, in front of the largest crowd ever gathered for aregatta award ceremony, Team Luna Rossa Swordfish thankedall the participants and the crowd went wild when skipper MaxSirena took the medal from around his neck and flung it intotheir midst. One glance towards helmsman Checco Bruni andhe follows suit, flinging his medal, too, towards the outstretchedarms of the public, followed by the other crew members, oneby one: Xabi Fernandez, Manuel Modena and Paul CampbellJames.

«I would like to thank the whole team for its effort and dedicationduring these races, until the last leg of the racing and both on board

and ashore: they never give up. The result is encouraging: wewere close to the perfect final and to the third place in the overall fleet raceranking with Chris Draper, who proved once again to be up to ourexpectations» Luna Rossa Skipper Max Sirena

>

Curiosity: Italian derby for the semifinal The semi-finals for the match race witnessed a ratherstrange combination: a totally “in-house” challenge betweenthe Luna Rossa Swordfish and the Luna Rossa Piranha. Bothvessels were penalized for OCS, with Luna Rossa Swordfishon leeward. When accelerating again Luna Rossa Swordfishis in the better position, inside the mark and rounding boththe reach and the leeward gate in front. On the windward leg,at the first cross, Draper closes the distance on Bruni but, being on port, is forced to give way. Bruni then chooses to sailon the left of the course where he finds more pressure, thusincreasing his lead on Piranha. Swordfish will maintain herposition up to the finish and qualify for the next day’s matchrace finals.

The challenge of this project is to look foradditional solutions that will allow a morecomplete use of the onboard spaces, makingit possibile for the yacht to be equipped with a range offacilities that are usually more common in lager yachts. For instance a touch and go helicopter pad has beenadded as well as the use of tenders that are slightly big-ger than usual thanks to the solution for their storage.Infact storing them on either side of the main deck, freesup the aft part of the boat that could become easily abeach , a sauna area or a garage for additional water toys. The yacht is also suitable for exploration in cold as well hotclimates: this explains why in one of the Explorer 57m lay-out proposal, all the spaces has been made accessiblewithout the need, for guest, to go through the externalarea. (eg. the aft area could be accessed through a corri-dor that goes through the engine room space). The layout offers the guest four double cabins, plus a Vipone, while a full deck is entirely dedicated to the owner, with a huge cabin looking forward through big windowsand with a huge terrace overlooking the bow area. At aftthe upper deck has a spa pool.It is equipped by twin Mtu 12 V 4000 M 63 coupled toconventional shaft lines, which allow a top speed of 16knots and cruising speed of 15. The range is 3000 nauti-cal miles at 15 knots or 5500 miles at 13 knots. Maneuver-ing will be implemented by a bow thurster. The project alsoconsiders the possibility to equip the vessel with hybridpropulsion system.

The most interestingaspect of this work, according to Liuni, wasprecisely the dichotomymeant to be establishedbetween the (classic) outwardappearance of the boat andthe interiors redesigned in amodern way, with a greatfreedom of interpretation.Gaia has a history of greatcharm and interest: it was adisplacement shuttle built inthe late '50s in the Germanshipyards Schurenstedt andused by the German Navy.Later it was converted into ayacht, at first by changing thelayout of the interiors, but

without altering the externallines and, then, in the ‘90sthere was a renovation on thesuperstructure with the addi-tion of volume in the sternand a fly.An owner, attracted by Gaia’sclassic lines, has decided tobring it back to life by invest-ing in a long project, assignedto Alessio Liuni, an expert inthe restoration of vintageboats. At the moment of itspurchasing, the shuttle hadno equipment, apart from theengines.Structured on three decks,Gaia is organized with an aftdining area which, by a circu-

lar staircase, leads to thelower deck, which includestwo cabins and two bath-rooms. From the aft salooncontinuing towards the bowon the left there is the kitchenand then the dashboard in anelevated position. There’s alsothe main lounge, with a sec-ond circular staircase leadingto the lower deck, reserved forthe owner’s cabin (full beam)and the VIP one.The flybridge has a biminiand a large sunbathing area, plus a second commandpost and a tender of 5meters. On the deck, towards the bow, there is

also a drift sailing over 4meters. Always towards thebow there is a hatch leadingto the crew area (with twocabins). The interiors have been fur-nished with maple wood andpearly lacquers with cham-

pagne color (walls and furni-ture), while for the floors themain deck features a wengéwood in strong contrast withthat of the walls and thelower deck with biscuit-col-ored carpet. The ceilings arein Alcantara.

I followed the construction of thisyacht through the years, from its bare hullthrough the successive phases of installation ofthe various systems and furnishings. I saw how theroad to its completion, fraught with the vicissitudesof the Ferretti Group, was in any case undertakenwith a constant attitude of loving care by a dedi-cated and competent team who managed to bringa particularly complex project to completion in anexemplary manner. Just a few days after she was

launched from the CRN boat yard in Ancona, I got backon board to inspect the finished boat, dressed up, as shewas, to celebrate and be delivered to her new owner. The effect was even greater than what our readers canfathom from the marvellous photographs by MaurizioParadisi that accompany this article. The atmosphere on

Iboard was soft and warm and permeated by a uniqueelegance. The color scheme was muted, serious, and yetthe quality and choice of materials, the exquisite craft-work of the furniture and the ornamental touches madesure that pleasantly luxurious interiors were also cozyand highly livable. But let’s go back a step. The project was initiated by Nor-berto Ferretti, whose idea was to construct a yacht for him-self that would live up to his notion of what a truly greatyacht should be: one which would be the bearer of inno-vation, both in terms of style and technology. The project’sdesign was given to Studio Zuccon, Ferretti Group’s his-toric partner, with the mission to bring Norberto Ferretti’sconcept to life. Along the way, a buyer came along who, inpurchasing the boat, accepted the general plans for theproject.

Gianni Zuccon and his team bravely distanced themselvesfrom the usual distinguishing features of their design stu-dio (that make CRN yachts immediately recognizable).Once again proving their great versatility and creativi-ty, they have delivered a yacht whose exterior design rep-resents a significant deviation and evolution from elementsthat have always been seen as essential to the architec-tural style of large vessels. J’Ade’s hull/superstructure ratiotakes on a particular connotation since there is no clearboundary between the two, as opposed to traditional mod-els. The two parts blend together thanks to a trapezoid-shaped element that rises from the hull to include the gun-wale of the main bridge, and five full-length windows onthe upper deck. It is a stylistic element that takes on asymbolic, unifying significance: the boat is all of a piece, large, solid, with perfectly aligned interiors and exteriors.

The color scheme is extremely effective in highlighting thelayout of the rooms and the attention to decorative detail:the “warm grey” by Du Pont which covers the hull, themain deck and part of the upper deck is more of a warm, tawny taupe than grey. The upper deck opens forwardonto a white wheelhouse area, and at the stern on boththe upper deck and sundeck there are wide patios.

Interiors and furnitureInterior layout is traditional, with large lounge areas, bothindoors and out. Roomy guest cabins, including the mas-ter cabin, sleep ten, all pampered by thirteen crew mem-bers. The furniture, designed in accordance to the wishesof the ship’s mistress, and developed by Zuccon Interna-tional Project and CRN’s interior team under the guidanceof architect Costanza Pazzi, is dominated a brown/cream

color scheme into which jade-green elements have beenelegantly scattered: a cushion here, some embroiderythere, a throw or a small armchair livening up a loungearea. Brown are the walls and the furniture in Canalettowalnut with some polished rosewood details. Brown arealso the big nabuk leather armchairs in the salon, thenabuk-covered panels on the cupboard doors and draw-ers, the Afromosia, wide-board hardwood floors and theEmperador Dark marble cladding in all the bathrooms.Cream is the upholstery of the great Baxter sofas in themain salon, as well as those of the upper deck salon andthe nabuk leather, custom-printed upholstery of the Frauchairs in the bar area of the main salon. Its travertine mar-ble central floor/carpeting reflects the same creamy white. This same bi-color scheme is found in the master’s cabin, located foremost on the main deck, enhanced by a bed-spread and other fabrics by Loro Piana.

The master’s suite is accessed through the lobby from whichstaircases and an elevator lead to the other three decks. The passage from the studio leads to the cabin which, besides being the “sleeping quarters,” is in fact a perfectrefuge adorned with every comfort including a conversa-tion area on the left and a cozy recessed balcony on theright. There is a full-beam bathroom, with a shower stalland toilet area separate from the large, central, Corianbathtub. Following established traditions, the galley is located port-side and features a pantry. The J’Ade’s dining room, how-ever, is not on the main deck, but on the upper deck andthe food is brought up by means of a dumbwaiter or byservice stairs. The upper deck salon has a very comfort-able TV/conversation area as well as a formal dining room. The two areas share the vast and bright room that looksout through five full-length windows on each side, a privi-leged position whether anchored at bay or out on the openthe open seas.

Indoor/outdoor ratioThe entire design of the spaces on-board was conceivedto maximize the view of the sea and enhance the feeling ofbeing directly connected to it. Interiors and outdoor areascomplement one another. While rooms inside are brightwith natural light pouring in from vast windows on eachlevel, including the lower deck, outdoor areas have beendesigned with the same refined care in furnishings as theinteriors. Comfortable conversation areas and alfresco din-ing areas can be found on each deck and the sun decksports a profusion of couches, armchairs and sun beds. The sundeck stern can also be used as a touch-and-gohelipad. The central part of the sundeck holds a fitness andwellness area with a hammam and steam bath tiled inbright green. At the prow there is a big Jacuzzi to cool offin from sunbathing even while sailing.

The beach club and the floodablegarage At anchor, the preferred position for enjoying the sea iswithout a doubt the wide beach club formed by openingthe stern hatch. Once opened, with its teak floor and pan-eling, it becomes a pleasant, water’s edge lounge acces-sible both via the cockpit and through the inside salon. This area includes one of the most distinctive features ofthe entire project: the floodable tender garage, veryimpressive with the dramatic effect of its underwater lightsthat make you feel like you are in a sophisticated actionmovie. The garage basin is practically beam-width andhouses, at the owner’s request, a magnificent 27-foot(almost 8.5 meters) Riva Iseo. As engineer Simone Loren-zano, project manager of the J’Ade, explained, creatingthis system required substantial modification of the “stan-dard” naval platform used by CRN for its 60-meter mod-els. The wide, lateral, planked, portside opening requiredstructural modifications, making it necessary to carry outspecific studies on the feasibility of creating a longitudinaland traversal floodable compartment. The total displace-ment of the yacht, about 823 tons, means that the imbal-ance produced by the 18 tons of water necessary to fill thetender basin is negligible. The space fills up in about 10-15 minutes by opening a valve that substantially takesadvantage of the difference in water level between the seaand the yacht’s interior.

The floodable tender garage (above), definitely impressive, itsunderwater lights make it look like a scene from a movie. The tender

is a nearly 8.5-meter Riva Iseo. The system required a substantial change in the “standard” naval platformCRN uses for its 60-meter models.

Gianni Zuccon’s opinionJ’Ade is a yacht that departs from CRN tra-dition. Her lines are very innovative. Howand why? Let’s start with the why. In a process of con-tinuous creative research regarding style anddesign, we wanted to explore new ideas as toform, disrupting the normal relationshipbetween the hull and superstructure. On the J’Ade we have created an unprece-dented integration between the hull and super-structure, merging what are usually distinctparts into a single unit. How did we manage tocreate such a solution? The continuity of theexternal surfaces of the hull and superstructureis the key to understanding the architecturallanguage we adopted.

The two-color scheme was chosen to enhancethe proportional relationship between the vol-umes. The trapezoid that serves as a stylistic linkbetween the hull and superstructure includesanother strong and distinctive element: theseries of large windows of the upper decklounge. This yacht has a complex design, harmo-niously complex... While the general com-position is characterized by its originality, the J’Ade’s design manages to remain con-sistent despite the variety of elements thatcomprise it. Yes, a great deal of attention to exterior designdetails went into developing this project, thesame kind of care that is usually given to build-

ing smaller craft. The same is true for the inte-riors. The placement of each design detail isthe result of careful planning and contributesto the overall composition of a product with alot of personality. It is clear that a lot of though went into the

planning of each and every detail of the J’Adeconfirming ach collaborator’s commitment tothe pursuit of excellence at every level to guar-antee reliability and their belief that ideas canbe transformed into reality. This mega yacht is the result of a careful andin part “courageous” process of experimenta-tion with typologies and languages that willallow the boat yard to supplement its fleet witha product that will be in effect considered anovelty in the current market.

The inverse action, for safety reasons, is carried out in onlythree minutes. Besides the big hatch door, there are twowave-protection doors to keep the garage from beingdamaged. A sensor signals when the water level is suffi-cient to allow the tender to go out to sea. At this point thedoors open and the guests, aboard a sparkling Riva Iseo, can head off over the waves to their desired destination.Chapeau at CRN and his technicians came up with a bril-liant solution to a tough problem, adding a superb touchof class to an already magnificent yacht!

To reach this goal, even though the actually constructionwas entirely carried out on site in Antalya, they did rely onthe expert hand of an architect from that part of the OldWorld with centuries of experience in the sector, Dutchmaster Frank Mulder. He chose to favor composite materials, applied by resin-infusion and sandwich techniques to optimize theweight/power ratio, creating a superstructure that, despiteits imposing 46-meter length, can keep a low profile thanksto its elongated and rounded lines. The ship, clearlydesigned for ocean voyages, is extremely versatile: thesemi-displacement hull is propelled by twin, 3.65hp MTUengines and can reach tops speeds of 25 knots, but at thesame time is also able to remain highly efficient at cruisingspeeds for long distances, with about a 4000 nauticalmile autonomy at 12 knots. The interiors for the three decks were designed by Art-LineStudio, who brought the owner's dreams to life. The colorscheme, the forms and the choice of materials for thedecor are very Zen: a lot of wood contrasting with white(white furniture, leather, carpeting, drapes and ceilings),

Fast as the wind

The invitation by Brunswick Marine Italy totest out the Alicudi 970 was very tempting, asthis version offers itself as an alternative to Emotion (the samemodel but with a different deck construction) and because itis always a pleasure to work with a 500 hp engine. The loca-tion of our test was Castellammare del Golfo, a small citynear Trapani, close to the Zingaro Natural Reserve, with atemperature of over 23 degrees. There to welcome us wereboth the Brunswick staff with Andrea Carniti and Alessandra

Zazzero, and Benedetto Buttafuoco from Nautica il Grillo, aMaster and Mercury dealer. The boat has a refined appearance, with the tubulars in liv-ery ice, gray thrushes and gray-sand cushions. At the prowthere is a fiberglass bridge, an integral part of the deck, which also absorbs the corridors (also in fiberglass) whichpass through the tubulars and the whole stern area, cul-minating with the antireflux cockpit and the stern platforms. The back area of the boat has a large locker for various

The TestWith a deadrise of 26 degrees at the stern and an advancedprofile stempost, it is immediately clear that we are about toboard a fast vessel with two Verado motors at the stern, equipped with Mirage 23” pitch 3 ball propellors. The generos-ity of the 250 cv engines is undeniable. Out of the port a south-ern wind blows past at 15 knots, giving way to a choppy sea, putting to the test both the immersed part of the hull and thehull in general. We operate the SmartCraft DTS commands with ShadowMode and leave the port. The on board weight includes about200 liters of fuel and 5 crew members, with no water in thestern tank. We navigate against a beam sea, with the wind hit-ting the sides of the boat and the stern which is completelyempty standing tall on the surface of the sea. The trim is neu-tral and in order to enter planing it is necessary to reach 2,800knots, which corresponds to a velocity of 15.3 knots and a totalconsumption of 43 liters an hour. We increase the speed to about 3,500 rpm at 24.8 knots, apace which allows us to manage the vessel perfectly even whileturning. We further stimulate the motors and integrate the triminto the gear control. The motors result a bit low on the transomand this is evident by the fact that in order to “feel” the trim wemust raise it to above level 6. At 4,000 rpm we navigate atabout 33 knots consuming 104 lt/h, whereas at 5,000 knotsthe velocity is raised to about 45 knots and the consumption to164 lt/h. The maximum velocity, however, is reached at 6,000rpm with the gps displaying a value of 49.7 knots. At this pace and with these sea and wind conditions, driv-ing experience is necessary to handle this boat, whose hull

The driving console is central, powerful and easy tomanage, with the various instruments positioned insuch a way which does not require the person behindthe wheel to lose focus while navigating. The inclinedwindshield protects from the wind while not“opposing” the aerodynamicist too much, while thesurrounding stainless steel handrails are robust andeasy to traverse. A nook under the wheel allows drivingwhile standing without colliding ones legs, while thelow step acts as a foot support while driving sittingdown. Two lockers (one in the nook and one on thefootrest) offer coin tray solutions for small objects. Thedriver’s seat is designed as a sofa or simple back rest.Slightly lower, on the other hand, there is an “air type”table which can be closed into the wall when it is notneeded.

A technical comment about the hull Every Master boat can be customized by the client, both interms of the deck modeling and color selection. The utilizedmaterials are Pennel & Flipo hypalon and neoprene rubbercoated fabric, a 1,690 dtex Orca, while the fiberglass islaminated by hand in the new facility with headquarters inCarini, near the Palermo Airport. The tubulars offer sixwatertight compartments at differentiated diameterbetween the prow and the stern (from 0.67 to 0.47 meters)and are united to the fiberglass with fabric strips fastenedexternally. The resin is isoftalic which serves to permeatewicker, mat and composites and the coremat andpolyutherane are useful as a structural reinforcement. Thismaterial, used to make longerons and floor plates, iscovered in resin. The teak is used both on the planking leveland the stern platforms, while all the lockers are equippedwith piston valves and latches. It is not towable, as evenwith deflated tires its rigid structure causes it to go beyondthe allowed limit of traffic laws.

is quite deep, continually searching for support at the prow, and the wind makes this even more difficult. The boatresponds well to the reactivity of the motors, even if thehydraulic steering gear is a bit rigid, causing a possible airbubble in the circuit, therefore making turns a bit longerthan expected. The boat has fun and safe reactions whilestill, resting against the internal tubular which causes it totrace a precise and tight circle. We now navigate at abouta 45 degree angle to the surface motion of the sea, a con-dition with causes the hull to feel the wind less and controlis much easier, even at full speed. We also try a crash stop, passing rapidly from 5,500 rpm (46 knots) to a suddencomplete stop, which does not cause water ingress. Final-ly, we test the time needed to enter planing. We stop thehull, reset the stopwatch and operate the throttle: after 3.2seconds the 970 Alicudi is trimmed out of the water.Weight and length have a positive effect on the passage ofthe wave on the prow, whose peak comes eagerly butsoftly, with the progressive support of the spirketting on thewater without colliding abruptly.

hinking about last generationplotters, the mind comesinevitably to the mythical songsung by Susan Sarandon "Touchme, I want to be dirty ' in The Rocky HorrorPicture Show for comparison. Today youhave to be touch, otherwise you are nobody. The trend, also in the nautical world, hasbeen in place for some time, so that we can

say, with certainty, that we are facing the second genera-tion of touchscreen plotters. Some companies missed thefirst and have come directly to the second one. But theconcept is valid for all major manufacturers: the latestproducts are all touchscreen, more advanced and moresensitive. Many people argue that they can be used evenwith wet hands or gloves. How can it be possible? Itdepends on the sensitivity of the screen, and in particular,on the technique of "bonding."The assembly of the display to the apparatusand the quality of this processleads to a greater or lessersensitivity. At the end ofthe process they are pre-cisely tested andapproved by various com-panies to check if the desiredsensitivity has been obtained. They will be tested, therefore, with wet hands and by wearinggloves. For me as Genoese, there is atest that no touchscreen has passed yet:greasy fingers with focaccia oil. To tellthe truth, they are

Tnot good even on the buttons of an “old style” plotter key-board. The trend is unambiguous, although the latestmodels show some differences we then analyze. Some-body chooses the single touch, someone prefers the dou-ble touch or the hybrid, a touchscreen that provides forthe presence of buttons or wheels to access the mainmenu functions. Given the general trend, a question islegitimate: is it a fashion or are they really useful on board? We do not want to express hasty judgments, nor convinceanyone of a preconceived thesis, we limit ourselves toimagine a clash between supporters and detractors, so asto show all strengths and weaknesses of these tools. Byconvention, we will call the TOUCH supporters and NOTTOUCH detractors.

IMP. PLOTTER en 3-06-2013 17:34 Pagina 103

Page 106: BARCHE June 2013 EN Edition

TOUCH – The screen is largerIt is a good motivation for the touchscreen plotters. Consid-ering the same space on the helm station, all or most of thespace occupied by the plotter is intended for the screen. Notby chance, the latest models are, as they say, wide screen, similar to a 16:9 of film or television type. The screen orien-tation is horizontal and you no longer see chart plotters witha vertical development. The advantage is more evident forrelatively small models. The little mask that contained themenu buttons is gone and the display is, therefore, larger.

NON TOUCH - At sea you can swingIt all depends on the type of boat and type of sea you face. Onething is certain, a planing hull that jumps from one wave toanother is not the ideal place to work on a touchscreen. It is notby chance that this technology has spread like wildfire formobile phones and tablets. The use of these tools is usuallydone while still standing, in an office or even walking, but cer-tainly not while you jump. On board of a boat the dear old key-board can be much more practical. This is why many new gen-eration plotters, even if they are full touch, have some buttons

or a knob. Those of Raymarine are defined as hybrids, mean-ing that they can be used

touch or in a traditionalway with the buttons. The same applies tothe last models ofLowrance and evenFuruno, which hasa knob to accessthe menu.

Given the generaltrend towards theuse of thetouchscreen, aquestion islawful: is it just afad or do theyreally have anutility onboard?

Plotter

TOUCH - The user interface is more intuitiveSmartphones and tablets are everywhere and have enteredeveryday use. As a result, many electronic accessories havealigned to this trend. Until a few years ago a touchscreenseemed stuff from Matrix, now it is very common. My daugh-ter, who is three and a half years, in front of any display triesto use her finger as if it were touch. Even with the television, ifshe wants to change the channel, she tries to touch the screeninstead of the remote control. The mass distribution has madethis interface much more "friendly". But that's not all. Have youever tried, after a short time you handle a smartphone, to comeback to an old generation mobile phone? The number ofrequired steps to perform an operation with a push-buttonphone is enormously greater. The touch display allows you toskip many steps to accomplish a task. Its interface is more intu-itive and fast. It almost seems to anticipate your moves, a bitlike it reads your mind. Merit of those who study these thingsand design the software tool. Consequently, the menu is mucheasier and intuitive because limited passages means reducingthe possibility of error.

NON TOUCH - The touchscreen does not always respond wellThe sensitivity is a problem especially at sea. For a smartphoneor a tablet it is just a matter of touching the screen. It is not saidthat this is always easy on a boat that rolls, slews or passes onthe waves. It is not said that even the new generation screens,i.e. those that work with wet hands or gloves, meet the favorsof boaters. At times, it is possible that sensitivity is also toomuch. Just pressing the buttons hard you are sure to choosean option. With a touchscreen, instead, you have to accustomand calibrate the touch.

Garmin – GPSMAP 721They were the first and they come first also in the update. Garmin is the company, among those nautical, which has been focusing for some time on the touchscreen. TheGPSMAP 721 is the second generation of these products. The latest addition is the 721,which is a 7-inch multi-function. It is a very popular size because it is a compromisemeasure, perfect for boats of small and medium length. Garmin has also chosen themulti-touch path and offers the pinch-to-zoom function to zoom in and zoom out theimage with two fingers. The other major effort has been made for the processor.Compared to the previous generation, it is 60% more powerful. This power is translatedinto a faster zoom in to get more quickly panning shots on the map. Finally, as well asall the newer models, it makes wireless a real belief. Also the GPSMAP 720 connectswirelessly to other devices on board as the autopilot and radar.www.garmin.it

Furuno - NavNet TZtouchIt is the new range of multi-function plotters that includestwo models of different "tonnage": 9 and 14 inches. Themain feature is to be multi-touch, that is, to offer thepossibility of the pinch-to-zoom. What does this mean? It isnothing more than what you normally do with a smartphoneor a tablet when you're in front of a internet page. To enlargeor reduce a picture you use two fingers. Among all thenautical plotters, those by Furuno have chosen the interfacemore similar to that of common use devices as phones ofthe latest generation. The advantage is that we will alwaysbe more accustomed to using two fingers on the display toscroll, zoom in and narrow. The disadvantage for those whobelong to the NOT TOUCH party is that, while you jump overthe waves, two fingers are even worse than one. To convince

the skeptics, Furuno also included theRotoKey. It is a knob located on the frameside of the screen that allows you to accessthe main functions of the menu to zoom in orzoom out the mapping, simply by turning it.

So it is definitely a touch plotter, indeedmulti touch, but you can also use it ina traditional way. The RotoKey hasalso the advantage of taking up much

less space than that required for akeyboard with many buttons.www.navnet.comwww.arimargroup.com

TOUCH - The many functions are more easily accessibleUntil a few years ago, the "competition" among chart plot-ters manufacturers was about which one of them added newfunctions. Today they are many. They are really multi functiontools that incorporate the radar, perhaps with the chance tomake the overlay, the fish finder with the option to develop akind of three-dimensional map of the fund, the sounder can"photograph" what lies beneath the hull, the raster vector,three-dimensional cartography, satellite photos, the repeatfunction of motor data, if this has an electronic control unit.In other cases, they have inputs for connecting multiple cam-eras, some even thermal imaging cameras to see at night;they collect the information from various sensors and carryout the task of monitoring all the onboard systems. In short,a plotter is capable of doing really everything. They look likethe AL computer in 2001 A Space Odyssey. The problemand the challenge the designers of these devices face, is to

make all this information easily accessible. If you needa thermonuclear engineer to browse the menu, the tool is not "friendly". Even if they are used tosurf, it is worth they are easy to understand. Thelatest generation of touchscreen plotters have

made great strides in this direction. It is enoughto think that to "customize" a page, oncethey proceeded in a complex way by push-ing many buttons, now is done by simply

dragging your finger on the icon of the func-tion you want to display on the screen. If youdrag multiple icons, automatically the plotterorganizes itself with a "splitted" screenshot ordivided the image so as to bring mapping,

Navico – Lowrance HDS Gen2 touchThe name says it all. Gen2 Touch is the second generation ofHDS plotter and the newest product by Navico who owns, aswell as Lowrance, also the Simrad and B & G brands. It is a fulltouchscreen that provides few but significant keys to scrollthrough the menu and activate functions also in the traditionalway. In what way has it evolved compared to itspredecessors? The Lowrance designers have worked veryhard on the interface. It is even more intuitive and tocustomize a screen it is enough to drag the icons of thevarious functions that appear on the home page. Theprocessor has been improved to allow faster steps from onelevel to another of zoom and from a chart screen to another.Even the "machine" has enhanced. The screen has a highersensitivity than the previous models so that they work even ifyour hands are wet. In addition, care has been taken tovisibility. The screen is wide, which is a sort of16:9 to gain further space, and it is "total sunview." Translated, it means that thebrightness has been optimized so as to bealways visible even in direct sunlight andwith any viewing angle. Finally, HDS Gen2Touch is the most compact as itincorporates in a single instrument alsodigital fish finder module that allowsyou to have the scan functionstructure and is equipped with built-inGPS antenna. The installation and theplacement on the helm station are thereforemore simple. www.lowrance.com

Ultimately, we do not know if you have decided to vote forthe TOUCH party or the NOT TOUCH one. The main com-panies that produce plotters, however, are decidedly orient-ed towards the TOUCH coalition, but they are not all thesame. The goal is common, but the way to realize it is, atleast in part, different and it is worth investigating the mainfeatures of the latest models offered by Furuno, Garmin, Ray-marine and Navico.

depth sounder, radar or navigation data on the display Thetouchscreen therefore, lends itself to simplify and make themany functions available to a more accessible plotter.

NON TOUCH - The traditional buttons represent a sort of func-tions summary For the same reason, some people prefer the keyboard. A plot-ter that incorporates many functions and is touchscreen risksto be buffer. Let's try an example. We are facing a mappingscreen of the plotter. You can see the sea, the coast and theport from which we have just left. You also see the symbol ofthe boat that indicates our position and moves on the map. Atthis point I want to make a waypoint and plot a course. It'seasy, just squeeze the screen in the exact spot where I have toget. To succeed, however, it’s necessary a minimal familiaritywith the touchscreen, otherwise I remain immobilized withoutunderstanding how to do. A traditional plotter which has at theside of the screen the buttons MARK and GO-TO, makes usunderstand that the ship's position is obtained with the first but-ton and the route with the second one . Alternatively, there is

always a joystick or a knob that allowsus to move the cursor to the desiredlocation to save the waypoint andthen work out the route. A touch-screen can be for someone like ablank page for a writer: there arethose who cannot wait to fill it andthere are those who, on the con-trary, remain fixed and do not evendo the first step.

Raymarine – e165,a65 and a67There's something for all tastes. In recent months, Raymarine has focusedon small and large ones. E165 is a 15.4-inch multi-function plotter. Thescreen is a 16:9, therefore, with the footprint of a 14 inch offers a 20%larger display. The user interface is called Light House and has beenfurther improved to be more and more easy to use. The road taken byRaymarine is defined Hybrid Touch. The plotter is touchscreen, but it doesnot completely abandon the push button to allow the user to select thepreferred mode. As we have said, on a planing boat sailing at 30 knots inrough seas, it is hard to imagine that we can make the most commonoperations typical of a chart plotter. Try to plot a course or change awaypoint when you come tossed in all directions. The presence of a smallmask, or a piece of frame and some buttons allow, if the sea conditionsrequire it, to grasp the tool sideways with your right hand and use yourthumb to intervene on the keys to access menus and functions . Moreover, considering the synergies with Flir, E165 is a plotter that allows you to seethe screen produced by the cameras of the U.S.company. The advantagesof touchscreens are particularly evident on small sizes. For this reason,Raymarine has made two small full-touch. They are a65 and a67 that havea 5.7-inch display with a footprint of only 16.4 x 14.4 cm. Obviously they

have a high degree of impermeability, or IPX 6 or 7 to be placed on board ofsmall boats or open rafts. The main features of a multifunction are allpresent: cartography, fish finder, navigation data, radar, fuel consumption, fuel gauges, and even entertainment features by synchronizing with yoursmartphone and remote control via Bluetooth MP3 for music.www.raymarine.it

he traditional fishing boat from Sorrento, with its unique characteristics solinked to its geographical origins, has now come to sail waters all over theworld, thanks to the efforts of one man, Cataldo Aprea, following the foot-steps of a family tradition harkening back to the mid 1800s. The Apreamarebrand has set sail not only in European waters but also in those of NorthAmerica, Russia, the Middle East, Japan and China, where dealers andshowrooms have been established. Last April, the company showed its 64Fly and 32 Comfort at the Boat Shows on the Chinese island of Hainan andin Sanya, the “Chinese Riviera”.

But let’s go in chronological order and go back to 1849, when Giovanni Aprea began tohandcraft sailboats and rowboats for fishing according to local Sorrento traditions. The family tradition continued when he passed the baton to his son Cataldo whothen passed it to his son, Giovanni. By the end of the Second World War a signif-icant innovation was added to the boats: thanks to the automobile industry, motors for the fishing boats were devised and the boatyard began to producetheir first pleasure craft, a sector soon destined to overtake the company’sproduction of fishing vessels.

When Cataldo Aprea entered the family business in 1973,he made some significant changes in both the company’smanagement and production methods. Together with Sal-vatore Pollio, a construction contractor, he distanced him-self from the core family business and founded Apreamarein 1983. In 1987 they presented their first model, a seven-meter fishing boat called the Smeraldo 7, at the NaplesBoat Show, which was an immediate success. That sameyear marked a milestone for the evolution of fishing boats:fiberglass was used for making the hulls for the first time, saving precious woods like teak and mahogany for otherparts. This new vessel was presented at the Genoa Boatshow in 1988 where it was enthusiastically received by thepublic. The model which marked a major change in designand altered Apreamare’s destiny was the 1989 model, the

Sorrento fishing boatThese ancient boats were practically unchanged untiljust before the Second World War. Characterizedespecially by a double-pointed hull, with bow andstern practically identical, the vessel relied on oarsand latin-rig sails for propulsion. The pointed bowserved a specific function: after sailing to a fishingspot, the boat was then rowed sternward. The sternthen became the work area and its unique shapegranted the anchored boat greater stability. They were work boats, after all, but the passion andcraftsmanship of the carpenters, blacksmiths andshipwrights who built them always gave them thatparticular grace that made them so successful. It wasonly in the ‘30s that the first major evolution of theSorrento fishing boats came about: the introduction ofa motor. The first to be fitted were automobile enginestaken from Fiat Balillas and then from the AmericanJeeps. Stern volumes were increased and the vesseltook on a new aspect that confirmed it as the perfectsea-going craft. Thus the traditional fishing boatbegan to capture the interest of pleasure boaters.

This is how one ofthe oldest shipyards in the world - founded in 1873 byLorenzo Benetti - will celebrate its 140th anniversary, whichalso coincides with the 10th anniversary of the acquisitionof the shipyard in Livorno by Orlando family. To celebratethis double anniversary, the company has decided to openits legendary historical archive for the first time (you can

see some pictures in these pages), recently computerized. The activities of the yard, at the beginning of the ‘70s of the XIXcentury, is based on the building of wooden boats for local andinternational trade. After the death of the founder Lorenzo, thesons Gino and Emilio took over, changing the name to "FratelliBenetti" and reaching great attention and recognition even out-side the Mediterranean area. Asinara Island

This island, of about 59 square kilometres - and second insize only to that of Sant'Antioco - is located in the north-western part of Sardinia, in the gulf, which carries its name.It was formed from schistose rocks with granite base, and so,it is very arid. It was once called Insula Herculis, and thenSinuaria, from which derives the current one. Thanks to the long uninhabited period the beaches are stillunpolluted, in the green of the Mediterranean area and whitedonkeys can be seen. The Cala d’Arena beach is maybe themost beautiful on the whole island.During the winter it is divided in two by a small stream: behindit stands a coastal tower of the XVI century.Near the ruins of a monastery of Camaldoli friars andsurrounded by granite rocks, there is Cala Sant'Andrea, whileto the north-east, near the only inhabited center of the island(landing dock for boats), there is Cala d'Oliva. In the eastern part, toward the gulf of the Asinara, the Cala diSombro di Dentro offers beautiful coves protected from thewind, as Cala Serena, while on the opposite side, exposed tothe winds, there is Cala di Sgombro di Fuori.Near a covered port we can find Cala Reale, where we canadmire the remains of an ancient roman ship.

oused in a lovely reconstructed1858 stone village, surrounded by anatural oasis - an ancient olive grove flankedby an oak forest amidst some rugged land-scapes where the silence is only interruptedby the call of the wind and the songs of birds- the Aquapetra Resort on Monte Pugliano(BN), is located only 3 kilometers from TeleseTerme, in the heart of the Sannio Beneven-tano area, a gourmet’s paradise.

Surrounded by 25 hectares of woods and meadows, crossedby hiking trails, the resort was reconstructed maintaining thelayout and feel of the original ancient village, with its structuresscattered around a central square, a chapel and stone-pavedwalkways leading to the bedrooms, the pool the restaurant andthe spa. The old wine cellar has been converted into a restaurant, LaLocanda del Borgo, with its cozy, fire-lit indoor dining room anda large patio for open-air dining in spring and summer. The cui-sine is characterized by its re-visitation of traditional recipes,

HThe resort is completely immersed in nature and, among its many attributes, boasts a lovely outdoor pool. Indoors is the

AquaSpa, replete with sauna, sauna, steam room, Kneipp treatment facilities and indoor hydrotherapy pool.

“Slow”holidaysAmong the holiday packages offered by Aquapetra is SlowBike in which, in addition to use of the Spa and therestaurant, proposes long, leisurely rides along nearlyunexplored trails and bike tours to the nearby villages, along trails through untamed nature. Carefully studieditineraries have been planned with interesting rest stops alldesigned for the bike-lover’s delight. The expert guides of the “Puri tour” take you on a 3-hourride by mountain bike through 3 kilometers of ruggedterrain filled with gullies and volcano-like craters known as“Puri.” After your rough ride we recommend some well-deserved relaxation in the spa carved into the rocks forsome fitness exercises and a relaxing massage. Dinner atLa Locanda del Borgo restaurant (chef Luciano Villani) isthe perfect conclusion to a wonderful day.
