Civil Servant

Do you remember All the president’s men, the1976 film starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford whichtold the story of the events leading up to the resignation of thepresident of the United States, Richard Nixon? I must haveseen that movie at least ten times, and each time it makes methink about just how far away America is; how different oursocieties are. I wonder why Italian journalists carry so littleweight, in the sense that their input has absolutely no effect onthe evolution of Italian society. You could say that they are therudder that drives public opinion according to the whims of thepowerful at the helm. Thegreatest degree of dissentionthey manage to express canbe summed up in four words,«Allow me, Mr. president».This cultural differencebetween Obama’s countryand Napolitano’s is evidenteven among boating enthu-siasts. In the USA, any citizenwho purchases a yacht is seen as successful, whereas in Italyhe is viewed suspiciously as someone who must have got richillegally. The nautical world is nothing more than a slice of soci-ety with all of the same positive and negative aspects as anyother. This is as true in the USA as it is in Italy. The trouble isthat here in Italy you can do and say anything and the directopposite, as long as you stay afloat. There are many ways toaccomplish this. For example a journalist can turn a blind eyeto what’s really happening, or tell the truth, even at a great per-sonal risk. Barche has always strived to keep the boating com-munity fully informed and aware. Sometimes we have suc-ceeded, other times less so, although we don’t delude our-selves that we carry the weight of a Washington Post. Wespeak to our readers, to sailors, to boat builders, to institutionsand to the politicians who govern us. Sometimes the publichears us, like the time we were calling for a technocratic gov-ernment months ahead of Monti’s arrival, even giving his nameas a possible leader. Or the time we fought to keep short-sight-

ed political planning from destroying the Italian boat-buildingindustry. At the time of writing this, the elections had yet to beheld, although by the time you read this, the die will have beencast. Whatever the overall results, we already know that thepresident of Azimut Benetti, Paolo Vitelli, will be a member ofparliament. Azimut is one of the top leaders in the world ofmotor yachts, which closed out the 2012 fiscal year with a600 million euro positive production value. Mario Montinominated him to the Chamber of Deputies declaring «Wehave made many mistakes in the nautical sector. You will see

that with our candidate topping thelist in the Piedmont Region, things are going to change».In his acceptance speech,Paolo Vitelli stated: «I havespent my entire life as an Ital-ian entrepreneur putting upwith and struggling againstpolitics, having to defend mycompany’s reputation for

excellence against the Italian image abroad that associatesdomestic businesses with weakness and instability. I havebeen given this opportunity to enter the political arena and Iaccept this challenge, hoping that my commitment will not belimited to dealing with parliamentary questions, but also man-agerial ones: to carry forward a reform program that only Montiis capable of implementing».I am not expecting any particular nautical legislation to bepassed, although I am sure there will be plenty. What I amexpecting is a strong, ethical contribution, where funda-mental values like honesty, efficiency and commitment toachieving a common good are the guiding light of a CivilServant whose sole ambition is to serve the needs of theNation. I am convinced that, thanks to a new class of politicians beingushered in by a civil society, even the recreational boating indus-try will benefit and thrive once more.

They were thenmoved, and subsequently placed in the tank again three times:most of them did not return to the refuge that they had chosenat the beginning. Those that did not receive the shock, on theother hand, continued to make use of their preferred shelter. «Agreater consideration of the treatment of these animals is nec-essary,» say the scholars.

How an island is born

Allarme FijiThe famous islands signalthe abnormal growth ofalgae in the seas that sur-round them. «We suspectthat this sudden growthover the course of the pastfew years is caused bychanges occurring in theenvironment, such as theincrease in seawater tem-peratures resulting from cli-mactic changes, the scarcecirculation of water in thelagoons, the artificial growthof certain nutritive elements,

and also of pollution»,explained Antoine De RamonN’Yeurt, researcher at thePacific Center for Environ-mental and SustainableDevelopment (Pace-Sd) atthe University of Suva (Fiji). To find an answer, one canresort to the Pacific SolutionExchange (Pse), a system ofinformation exchangebetween scholars. A possiblesolution to the problem couldinvolve the long lasting use ofcompost algeas, as a fertilizeror as biomass energy.

We are in Germany, in Wattenmeer, a kind of lagoonthat is part of the North Sea. Here, over the course of

10 years, the true birth of an island took place, dubbedNorderoogsand. It is 7 and a half kilometers long and a bitmore than 2 kilometers wide, and began to emerge in 2003.It appears that this phenomenon is due to the current andwind actions that form sandbanks. These are usuallydestroyed by storms, but with Norderoogsand this was notthe case (given its position in a particularly sheltered zone).Today, there are about 50 plants and various animals, suchas sea lions and different types of birds on the island.

Iwas in a village where reigned an intense intellectual lifeas perhaps there are no others in the world. Thanks to

Nonino family, the closest contact between the writer and lifehas been established." In 1977 the Nonino Prize Risit d’Âuris joined to that of literature, to emphasize the permanentvalidity of peasant civilization, and in 1984 the recognitionreserved for a foreign writer was also added. “Chopi Chopi, whose exter-nal structures and compart-mentalization we handled, isa very important goal for mystudio, because on the onehand, it is currently ourbiggest realization, and onthe other hand, it consitutesthe beginning of a newphase of research, focusedon the definition of vesselsof larger dimensions. From a linguistic perspec-tive, the 80 meter was con-cieved from the convictionthat a new “custom prod-uct” must always find itsmotivations in the search fora wise balance between his-tory and innovation, i.e.between the cultural convic-

tions of the designer andthe new opportunities thatthe specific requests of theowner can offer. This ves-sel, that I will permit myselfto define “timeless”, as aresult of its balanced lin-guistic and volumetric sys-tem, which is also attentiveto all of those conotationsespressed by contempo-raneity (trasparency, flexi-bility, indoor/outdoor rela-tionship ecc.), underlinesyet again my convictionthat the product should beconcieved as the result of acorrect and clear fusion ofthe linguistic element, andthe ergonomic functionalelement.”

Comment from the architect Gianni Zuccon

Works in progressAt the moment, 8 mega yachts of the CRN brand are beingmanufactured at the Ancona shipyard .There are six megay-achts in steel and alluminum – CRN 125 60 m J’Ade, CRN131 of 74 m (designed by Zuccon International Project) CRN132 of 73 m (designed by Omega Arhictects), CRN 133 of60 m (designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design), CRN134 of 55 m (designed by Nuvolari & Lenard) – and twoCRN Navetta 43 of 43 m made of composite, also designedby Zuccon International Project. In addition to these CRNships, there are 5 custom line maxi-yachts (two 124’ CLs,two CL Navetta 33 Crescendos and a 112’ CL Next) andone 122’ Riva Mythos in alluminum.

Chopi Chopi will remain in the shipyard for a few more

months, where it will carry tests at sea, and have its interior

preparations finished. The final delivery to the owner is

expected in May, and the first cruise will be in the Adriatic.

the external lines and the compartmentalization of the inside, and the CRN Engineering team deal with the naval architecture. The furnishings were custom-designed for the owner by interi-or designer Laura Sessa. It is easy to immagine that on a hullof this size, there is everything and more: It is truly a floatingIsland, over 1,000 meters of surface, a sole object, custom-builtfor the owner, who wanted an ad-hoc project to accomodatehis guests: six suits with balconies and terraces extendableupon the sea on the main deck, and an exclusive refuge for theowner, with an entire deck included, two external areasequipped with a hydromassage pool and relax zone and anarea upon which a helicopter of up to 3,000 kilograms can land. One perk is definitely the beach club beyond 100 squaremeters, whose hatch transforms into a vast bareback waterbeach. The relax area also continues on the inside with a fitnesszone and a spa with sauna. Particular attention was given to the crew lodgings – withenough room for more than 30 people – in direct contact withthe engine room and the garage space. There are two Cater-pillar 3516B-C motors, which push the boat at a cruising speedof 15 knots and a maximum of 16. The range at 12 knots, is ofabout 6,000 nautical miles.

We are losing control! In order to built the Chopi Chopi, an average of 80 people a dayand 660,000 total working hours were needed. If we had to layout all of the electric cables we would reach 100 chilometers inlength, including one just for the fiber optic. On board, the crewwill be made up of 33 people, and on the inside, there are twoelevators that connect the two decks. The value of the shipexceeds 80 million euros and is the 129th construction of CRN.

ouis Vuitton, Fendi, Dior, Moët &Chandon. These are just some of thebrands of Lvmh Group which includes also theshipyard Princess. How can such differentrealities be connected? To rush things, luxu-ry could be thought as a common denomina-tor. But to a less superficial analysis it is clearthat what links these companies is somethingmuch more concrete: the constant search forexcellence, which is expressed in building

quality and design, but also in the maximum pleasure forthe customer. Touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste: these arethe senses that are enhanced in the events organized byLvmh, without exception. The boats are one of protago-nists that help to create a unique experience in the sign ofemotion. From this premises, it is easy to understand which thecharacteristics of the Princess hulls are. The 1965 is theyear when the first 31 feet of the shipyard was launchedand from the beginning they tried to elevate the standardsof the engine cruise. In the following years this trend wasdeclined in flybridge series, class V and superyachtsand the main elements area sleek design, attentive tothe needs of shipownersand trends, maneuverabilityand ease of management, luxury interiors. Everythingis guaranteed by a stablebalance of form and function, obtained thanks to theadvanced technology of the modern factory which hasexpanded more and more over time. Each hull is the result of a rigorous approach, starting fromthe first sketch to the cutting-edge engineering. It is nocoincidence that every boat up to 85 feet coming out ofthe factories is certified Rina Green Plus. With regard toproduction, Princess has been a pioneer in the use of resininfusion technology on a large scale, a closed moldingprocess that eliminates emissions in the workplace and inthe environment. This technique reduces the weight of thehull and delivers high performance, fuel efficiency, autono-my and a wide choice of engines. The latest findings of theCfd technology (computer fluid dynamics) are used in orderto guarantee a "top" hull with a rapid transition in plane. The electronic controls of the edge, the powerful propellersand the power steering, in turn, wish to ensure maximummaneuverability, even in small harbors. Comfort meanssafety and profiles integrated into the hull allow the boat tostay dry even in high speed by reducing the water resist-ance. The high sides, extended handrails and non-slip sur-faces provide some protection on deck, while usingadvanced soundproofing and exhaust silencer watercooled to minimize emissions and engine noise. The harmony of proportions, then, is reflected in every

Ldetail. On the bridge, for example, where there areergonomic seats and precise controls, steering wheel andaccelerator, located at hand, clear and intuitive instrumen-tation, in the allocation of space, to make them usable inan intelligent way without compromising the style. The inte-riors are characterized by the ability to customize the lay-out and used materials. The collaboration with other groupcompanies, most notably Fendi Casa, allows owners towork together with designers to create tailored spaces. The wooden furniture are realized by the shipyard and arehandmade. Each element of joinery and carpentry is pro-tected by several layers of paint (up to eight) and rubbedby hand in the traditional manner.

The news82 Motor YachtThe new 82 has a contemporary style that comes from themost modern building technologies and design, while pro-viding a refined appearance. It is very large, its 25 metersare characterized by dynamic exterior and interior of accu-rate finishes.

e is 29 and sailing is his reasonfor living and his work. He is youngand has much enthusiasm. You might thinkthat these are the basic ingredients of hissuccess. Yet, without maturity and lots ofwisdom you go nowhere in the VendéeGlobe, except maybe to another world ... Inshort, circumnavigating the globe solo, non-stop and without assistance, it is not a busi-ness for everybody. Reaching the finish line

(Les Sables d’Olonne) is already a success for reckless peo-ple who face this challenge. Winning it is only for real heroes. And it is so that many of the participants are considered in

Hthe native country of this competition, France. Here, and inparticular in this race, courage, preparation, ability to pushforward the limits of human endurance are almost apprecia-ted. Thinking to participate is itself an act of daring. Whoattends this race, then, makes not only a sporting experien-ce, but transcends himself, knowing the infinity as he throwshimself headlong in it, challenging it. Solo. The circuit conditions are among the worst and for almostthree months the only real priority for the racers is to save theskin and to push the boat always forward by anticipating itsbehavior. Where's the fun? Obviously it cannot miss, as inthis whole adventure the engine is always one: passion.

Who is François Gabart? He is an easygoing but very methodical skipper, with anaccurate and scientific approach to navigation. But thebasis of his qualities are the impetus and the wonder ofgoing on the sea, feelings as old as the oceans themsel-ves. Coming from Charente (France), at the age of sevenyears he spent a year on a boat with his parents, an expe-rience that has marked much the rest of his life. He began

From West to EastThe circuit starts and finishes at Les Sables d'Olonne, past the Cape of Good Hope, and circumnavigatesAntarctica, through Cape Leeuwin and the well-knownCape Horn.• The first segment, the crossing of the Atlantic Oceantowards the South, is crucial for the outcome of therace because strong winds can disadvantage orfacilitate the participants in a decisive way. A lot oftactics must be used as a single error of judgment canresult in hundreds of miles lost.• A fortiori, the strategy becomes crucial moving tothe southern hemisphere, in tropical waters(Doldrums): they are a nightmare for sailors, due tostrong gusts, storms, torrential rains or ... calm.

Weather forecasts must be checked and every detailmust be analyzed to get to the island of St. Helena, inthe Gulf of Guinea, where a wind sometimes blowsthat brings direct to Brazil, which is in the oppositedirection of the one designated.• In the Indian Ocean, between the Cape of Good Hopeand Tasmania, you enter another world: little light, stormy seas, strong winds, cold, damp. This is thepoint where you feel the true loneliness, inside andoutside. At the limit, surrounded by ice, among the"roaring forties" * sailors can meet the real danger, the fear of not succeeding.• Towards the Pacific: after the onslaught of Cape Horn, they begin to sail towards home. But difficulties do notdecrease, you must pay attention to icebergs, day and

night, watch the radar, but this is not enough. Toughalways with open eyes, the risk of collision is high.• You come back to South Atlantic waters. It is here, however, that many of the participants of the previouseditions have decided to retire, exhausted from whatthey had just passed and not willing to face thePamperos, polar winds that blow violently near thecoast of Argentina.• For those coming up here, there is the last stage inthe North Atlantic, where a few signs of civilizationbegan to reappear, a cargo or a passenger ship. Untilthere are the first lights of the coast. You come home, alive, and navigate in the channel of Les Sablessurrounded by a lot of fans who welcome the newheroes.

The historyThe first edition of the race, which is held every four years sincethen, was in 1989-90. The creator was Philippe Jeantot. Noone knew what to expect, there was a lot of excitement aroundthe event that seemed more the crazy idea of some young sai-lors than any other things. At that time 13 skippers of threenationalities attended the race and only seven of them reachedthe final, because the others were disqualified or withdrew. Thewinner was the French Titouan Lamazou. At the nextedition (1992-93) 14 participated and only 7 arri-ved at the finish line, but this edition is remem-bered for the first great tragedy: Nigel Burgessdied at sea, at the Bay of Biscay. In 1996-97the first two women attended the race: Isa-belle Autissier and Catherine Chabaud. Onlysix out of 15 competitors finished the raceand seven retreated due to accidents onboard. Also in this case there was a death: GerryRouf (the remains of the wreck were found only sixmonths later). Since 2000 the rules for safety at sea havebeen intensified. In that edition, Michel Desjoyeaux won andEllen MacArthur came second and Yves Perlier was famous

that once dismasted, continued the race by adjusting the bro-ken shaft and the rudder by himself. In 2004-05, 20 participa-ted and Vincent Riou won with the Prb Desjoyeaux hull. This edition was attended by 20 sailors, including theItalian Alessandro Di Benedetto with the colors of the French

very long journey beginsalways with a little step». Whosaid this was known as the "greathelmsman" (Mao Tse Tung), althoughthe nickname was not given him forhis sea talents. More than five yearshave passed since that small step andthe journey seems to be marked. Thestep has been made, of course, by afoot, but a bit unusual one, as it iscalled IPS. It’s thanks to Volvo Pentaand its engineers who have designed

a new type of transmission. The history of Pod Volvo withtractor propellers is known. When the first version with apower range from 260 to 435 hp was presented, the engi-neer Carlo Belloni of Volvo Penta stated that "there is noengineering limit to IPS development." Today that state-ment has been confirmed. The Ips 1 system was born topower boats ranging from 10 to 15 meters in overalllength. It stood halfway between a classic stern outdriveand a shaft. The feeling was, even then, that it would nothave delayed in developing to meet the needs of largervessels. Today Volvo Penta proposes, in addition to thefirst Ips, also the second and the third. Ips 2 is associatedto engines of 600 and 700 horsepower, while Ips 3 up to800 and 900 horsepower. Considering that benefitsincrease especially in the case of multiple installations, today Ips transmissions can also be mounted on boats upto 24 meters in length with twin motors, much more if theengines are three or even four, as the American yard Laz-zara did on 92 feet. After Pod Volvo Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Zeus came, which now offers engines between 355 and 715 horse-power, and then the ZF one for engines up to 1,250 horse-

power. They are not all the same thing, but derive from thesame principle. The tractor propeller is a Volvo Penta’s fea-ture. Those of Zeus are duce and with traditional drivingdirection. The ZF Pod is only a foot and can be coupledwith many engines like Yanmar, Cmd, Man, Caterpillar,MTU and FPT. Recently, the ZF’s latest version, allows tocreate an installation that needs a minor draft. To avoidhaving one foot that immersed consumes several cen-timeters, in fact, it is possible to draw slightly concave hullsthat enable to accommodate the ZF Pods. It's like if theywere semi ducted propellers.Back to origins and to studies related to this transmission,we believe that the engineers at Volvo have started froman elementary observation: do we need to motorize a boator a rocket ship? The shaft transmission has a special fea-ture. It is oblique, so it pushes not only forward, but alsoupwards. It’s a pity that the boat does not have to take off,but only to proceed along the water surface. It seems sillyand trivial, but Pod Volvo’s benefits start from this. Thisparticular transmission has many arrows at his bow; thefirst one is just that the thrust is horizontal, not oblique.Consequently, the same performance can be obtained, guaranteed by a shaft line transmission with a lower power. The shaft line wastes power upwards. Greater efficiency inthe thrust also means less space and power consumption. The examples abound. The comparison between the Podsand a traditional transmission is not based on theoreticalcalculations, but on concrete examples. In fact, the casesof vessels that have been motorized with both systems, are many. Volvo has calculated, for example for the C68 ofSessa, that the average fuel saving is around 12,000Euros. The comparison is done with respect to the sameboat with a shaft line transmission. How do we get to thisdata? The Sessa C68 with shaft line requires two engines

From the stern to the PodThe DNA of the stern has Italian molecules, not only

Scandinavian or American. When it was patented, thesignature on the project was that of Guido Cattaneo. In 1934he experienced a transmission similar to a stern drive for ashort sport navigation. The patent was used during the warto equip small boats for assault that sacrificed themechanisms in favor of explosives. The idea was then takenup in 1958 by James R. Wynne, an engineer in Miami whohad just left Mercury to pursue a transmission thatcombined the advantages of inboard engines with the footof an outboard. During the experimentation phase, he used aVolvo engine and this brought him into contact with theSwedish company which immediately realized the potential. The Volvo Penta developed the project and in 1959, at theNew York Boat Show, the first stern was shown. Thetransmission had a huge success and two years later itappeared at the "Boat" Milan Exhibition, that had not yetarrived in Genoa. Even the propeller tractor is a project thatowes its parentage to Volvo Penta. The first models weretested in 1980, but it was only in 2007 that the Ips systemswere presented.

from 1360 hp each. In the version with Volvo IPS, howev-er, the engines have only 900 horsepower. Thanks to agreater efficiency offered by the horizontal thrust of the Podyou can have two less powerful and therefore more fuelefficient engines. At a speed of 35 knots, the C68 con-sumes 20% less fuel and increases the autonomy of 25%.Assuming 80 hours engine at 35 knots, you get a savingof 6,800 liters of fuel, or about € 12,000. The same can besaid of Fiart 50 Genius, one of the first models thatinstalled the Ips, despite being born and designed for shaftline transmission. At a maximum speed, the model with theIps guarantees a savings of about 30% of fuel and thisdata can be met for almost all boats. With Volvo Ips inshort, a third of fuel can be saved. 66 The Master ofApreamare measures nearly 21 feet long and weighs 40tons. It mounts the most recent Ips 1200 and, also in thiscase, the comparison with traditional transmission is mer-ciless: at 28.5 knots of speed 26% of diesel is saved andyou get a longer fuel autonomy by as much as 35%.Assuming an average of 80 hours engine, we get a savingof around € 16,000. On the same boat, comparing theshelves of the layout, it is clear what the advantage is interms of overall space. cantly reduced than with a shaft line transmission. But that's not all. There are at least two other importantadvantages. The first one is appreciated by shipyards andindirectly also by ship owners very much. It refers to instal-lation times. It is in all respects similar to a stern drive andtherefore a scientist is not needed as for the shaft line. There are no rudders, the centerline to be aligned, the sup-ports and the cases. In conclusion, fewer hours of work

are necessary to assemble a transmis-sion with the Pod. This is good not

only for the yard that has to builda boat, but also for the owner

who will benefit from a lowerlabor cost. The last arrow, which inevitably affects thetarget in the heart, is themaneuverability. There isan abyss between trans-

missions with driven pro-

Z-Drive Pod, the conferenceAtena, the Italian association of naval technology, hasdedicated a conference, that was held in Genoa, to presentthe benefits of these transmissions. The event wasattended by engineers, designers and architects, who haveworked with companies that produce Pod and theconference had an important scientific contribution. This isan independent study conducted by the University of Genoa.During the presentation, Professor Marco Ferrando hashighlighted the benefits of these transmissions for theshipyards and vessels that adopt them. The research fromthe University of Genoa also used water tests.

pellers and a traditional shaft line. The Pod Volvo trans-missions rotate independently from each other and thisallows simple mooring maneuvers, but they are also ableto ensure tight turns at high speed. Once you try it, it ishard to go back. It is better than the car steering. Whenyou board a boat about 20 meters long which features ashaft line transmission you have the feeling that you couldgo to the kitchen to put on a coffee before the turn is over.On the dock you feel the same sensation. All those whocame after Volvo, in fact, have adopted similar solutions..Zeus feet as well as ZF Pod rotate and they do so inde-pendently from each other. In this way, as well as VolvoPenta transmissions, they are able to translate the boat. Tolay alongside the dock in the English manner is no longera problem. And even mooring with strong winds is not dif-ficult. Everything is controlled with an easy and intuitive joy-stick, which allows to increase the engine power at a min-imum, just to counter the leeway produced by the strongwind.

The joy-stick for the

mooring is sopopular that

today there are notonly Volvo, Zeus and

ZF. This feature has been extended tostern drive both from Volvo and from

MerCruiser with Axius system. In Febru-ary, even Mercury has launched a joystick for outboardengines at the Miami Boat Show. Easy maneuver is anadvantage for any type of boat. The beneficiaries are thosefrom 20 to 24 meters in length, but also the smaller boats. The mid-range boats can do without the sailor, if the ownerwishes it. The joystick, in fact, allows to maneuver evenwith a small crew or without the presence of particularexperts on board. This also applies to small boats and ves-sels. An owner at first experience can more easily beseduced by an easy boat to moor. It only remains a topicthat usually works against the Pod: they cost a lot ofmoney. Companies have invested in research and devel-opment and they are not willing to give the fruits of theirlabor for free. And they do not even want to lower theirprices or do sales. As counterpoints there are the lowestcost for the engine, because you do not need a lot of hors-es as for the shaft line, fewer hours of installation, andabove all, the savings at the gas station. From 5 to 15,000euro per year for boats up to 20 meters are a lot of moneythat allows to amortize the investment relatively quickly. The advantage is greater, particularly for those boats thatreally want to sail and not just make a good show of them-selves in the dock.

One of the most significant

advantages of all Pod

systems is the great

maneuverability for any type

of boat. Those from 20 to 24

smaller boats benefit much

of it. Above Sarnico Spider,

ZF 4000:a project in collaboration withthe shipyardsIt has been studied in agreement with the shipyards and allthe aspects related to the transmission were evaluated. Theweight, the space needed inside the room and endurancewere taken into consideration. The integration between ZFand shipyard has led to a further reduction of spaces. Thedistance between engine and propeller, in fact, has beenreduced to just four meters. A shaft line, instead, requires analmost double space. The other feature of this latest versionof the ZF Pod is the reduced draft. The foot can be installedon a slightly concave hull. The hull form a sort of housing forthe Pod resembling ducted propellers. The efficiency of thethrust is always maximum and, simultaneously, theimmersion is more contained. The advantage is not only tohave fewer problems on the shallow water, but also to have

less friction in the water and to further increasethe efficiency of thrust.

wo world symbols – the nauticalDutch tradition and Italian design– united for the creation of a majestic super-yacht in iron and aluminum. A colossus ofover 60 meters in length and 1,154 metrictons, the technical offices of Icon yachts, thestudios of Jouke van de Baan and RedmanWhiteley Dixon (for naval architecture andexterior styling, respectively) and CristianoGatto, responsible for the internal spaces,

participated in its design and realization. Maidelle was created to suit the owner, who had participatedin the project, and envisioned long oceanic crossings (it has anautonomy of 6,000 nautical miles). Mirror effects, glass wallsand reflections all have a primary role in numerous andimmense spaces of the boat, furnished with an original Art Décostyle “correct” from oriental influences. These three differentstyles were chosen according to the area, in order to give eachzone a different atmosphere. Cristian Gatto explains: «In theprincipal salon and in the area dedicated to the guests, we useddark wood and marble to render the atmosphere formal, but atthe same time comfortabl».Beginning our description from the lower deck, there is a wideuse of mahogany, rosewood, and dark walnut in the guestrooms. For the headboards and other elements, avory andleather were used, and all the cabins are provided with a dress-er with a disappearing tv. Throughout various points on the ship, governable screens are positioned through iPod and iPhoneapplications that also regulate tv brightness.

A central corridor connects the guest zone up until the beachclub. Climbing the stairs, one notices the mostly “formal”atmosphere that the interior designer spoke of: the lobby pave-ment is in Pororo – a type of precious black marble from LaSpezia area, with white and gold streaks – whose researchhas lasted for a good two years. In order to amplify the par-ticular effect of this precious roof material, different mirrorswere inserted. At the stern of this deck, at the center of thesalon, a table for 14 diners can be accommodated, con-structed in rosewood with stainless steel legs. The centralpart, on the other hand, can be removed in order to form twosmaller tables, and like all of the furniture on board the Maid-elle besides two sofas, it was custom-made. The table is illu-minated by a glass Murano chandelier by the Venini compa-ny. Close by, there is a clear glass, internally illuminated lock-er built by a craftsman in Venice. Gatto than created a terrace space, separated from the salonby a sliding door, and from the stern deck by a glass door.«The use of curved windows is very common in North Euro-pean architecture – says Gatto – to illuminate the space and

to give one the impression of being outside, remaining at thesame time protected from the cold». The meteorological con-ditions of the Dutch summer are similar to those of theMediterranean fall or spring, hence the idea to create this notcompletely open space, halfway between the salon and theactual deck. Gatto’s second style choice, warmer and moreinformal, was used for the interior design of the owner areas. The owner’s suite includes two levels and can be accessedthrough a private corridor that begins at the lobby of the prin-cipal deck. Proceeding, one passes by the “master’s obser-vation lounge”, a private little salon which guarantees a grandpanoramic view and is equipped with some chairs, a disap-pearing screen, a bar and a desk. In front of this area there is also an exclusive space with audi-torium seats and sun chairs. At the stern, the vip is located, whose layout is similar to that of the guest rooms, but isequipped with more expansive windows, made of the samewood used in the master bedroom. Further in the gaft, thereis another salon, divided into two areas, one dedicated to filmviewing and the other to conversation and relax.

«I am Venetian, and therefore I have apassion for glass andlight», says CristianoGatto. This passion is

more than evidentin the Maidelle.

Interview with captain Donald Heath Donald heath, captain of Maidelle, has always navigated boats of every size and type, and was involvedin various ship projects, including above 82 meters. What is your overall impression of M/Y Maidelle?I’m very pleased with the build quality of the yacht – she behaved very well on delivery in some prettyawful weather, and generally gave the impression of being a solid and safe sea boatWhat are the top qualities of M/Y Maidelle?A lot of care was put into the technical spaces, and the standard of finish is very good. The varioussystems are from reputable suppliers and on delivery we had minimal problems. How does she handle in open and rough waters?Very well – the high bow keeps solid water off the deck, and we were able to maintain a good speedeven in quite rough weather with minimal slamming. What about your team, are they happy to sail the yacht?Yes, everyone was impressed by her sea keeping qualities, and by and large she was very quiet even in roughweather. The separate crew mess and lounge work well, and often in the evening there will be some crewwatching a film in the lounge, and maybe a game of cards or just general socialising in the mess room. What is Maidelle next stop?We will remain in the Mediterranean for the foreseeable future.

The owner’s suite is equipped with a huge bed with a

big screen tv, attached to the front wall. On the right

there is an area with a few chairs, whereas there are two

bathrooms (one for him and one for her). This space appears

warmer and more intimate compared to other areas, such as

the main salon, in part because of the choice of ebony and

Canaletto walnut instead of mahogany and rosewood.

Engine

The motorization is entrusted to a 12 cylinder MTU coupling, with 2,480 horsepower each, which guarantee a good rangeand a maximum speed of 16 knots, and are arranged in a neatand spacious engine room.

The outsideEach area of the outside space was furnished differently, according to its use: the stern area of the main deck has a sim-ple style, with a few simple pieces of furniture, and is suitablefor parties and get-togethers. In the same area of the upper deck, on the other hand, there isa pool and sun bathing area. The fly is simpler and more inti-mate, furnished with various sun-beds.The most characteristic zone is the beach club, where the third, and last style used by Gatto prevails. This style envisages theuse of natural and brushed teak, to recall the relaxed atmos-phere of a beach. Besides the classic equipment for water toys,in this zone there is a furnished gym with a treadmill.

The range of 6,000 nautical miles

guarantees a long cruise without

having to touch land: leaving from

a port in North Europe, it is possible to

arrive to the Caribbean Islands with a

single full tank, and be able to then

tranquilly visit the islands of the area,

seeing as though in any event, once the

vessel reaches Central America, there

are still 1,000 miles available.

he dedication of the name of oneof the most famous navigators of alltime to the collection clearly has the objectiveof emphasizing that the vessels that are a partof this series are able to “always navigate”. Thisis not a banal assertion, on the contrary, it isone proven by studies carried out by the cre-ative staff of Azimut, which in 2009 brought thisproject to life in order to respond in the mostsatisfying way possible, to the demands ofthose who love the sea to the point of notwanting to deprive themselves of it, even in the

presence of inopportune meteorological conditions, even at thecost of having to reduce the RPM and speed. The Magellano, project created by the Avigliana shipyard, envisages a range of

Tmodels extending from 43 to 80 feet, and four of these arealready available. The last to make its debut, in chronologicalorder, is the Magellano 76. The project of this “Italian trawler”has as a starting point the forefather of the series, or rather theMagellano 74, to which reinterpretations in the layout were intro-duced, in order to make it the most modern and up-to-date aspossible. The layout brings back the typical characteristics ofthe rest of the range, in which the vertical line of the stern, thecleanness and the power of the lines and the harmony of theflybridge, which distinguishes itself with its fiberglass roof (hard-top), all stand out. The flybridge is not invasive, but actually anessential part from an esthetic perspective. At the very front of the vessel, the pilot station with three seatsis located, complete with a Plexiglass windshield, and controlsthat allow the best possible management of the unit. stern, on the other hand, most of the usable space near thestairs can be dedicated to a chaise lounge or beach chair. It isalso possible to integrate a bimini for the cockpit. The maindeck also gains in lengths compared to the 74 model, 50 cmin the deckhouse and 60 at t he stern for the bathroom foun-dation, the latter equipped with tender lift. The dynamic test was carried out in Viareggio, in the presenceof quite favorable meteorological conditions, with a calm seaand total absence of wind. Before leaving the deck, we checkthe on board weight which in our case is equal to 4,000 litresof gasoline, 500 litres of sea water, 200 litres of black water and8 people, me included, a weight considered average by theshipyard. The Magellano 76 is equipped with a stabilization sys-tem, and even navigating rough seas becomes doable withoutmany problems, while the speed, on the other hand, variesaccording to ones own needs, and can pass from 11 knotsobtainable with the powerful Man, from 1,000 horsepower, each one pulled to 1,400 rpm, at 22 knots which is the maxi-mum reachable speed, with the hull in perfect shape, at 2,400rpm. The estimated cruising speed, however, is about 15 knotsand 1,800/1,900 rpm, a driving condition that allows the tra-versal of long distances, while consuming a total of about 200litres an hour. The absence of vibrations and the well-contained noise (59 dBA1,500 rpm and almost 67 at 2,200 in the pilot area, with deli-cate increases in the shipowner’s area closer to the engineroom) render navigation comfortable even from an acousticenvironmental prospective, and even in the cockpit the noise isstill at more than acceptable levels. The carbon consumption(that we indicated at about 200 litres an hour at 1,800 rpm),double at full speed even when touching the peak of 415 litres

The Magellano 76 can be defined as a “fast vessel”, in pureItalian style. It is made with attention to the smallest details and

able to navigate, when necessary, at up to 22 knots. >

every hour, guaranteeing a good autonomy thanks to theimportant carbon previsions in the tank. If during linear naviga-tion the Magellano 76 functions as a real vessel, regardless ofthe rpm speed adopted, during sailing it expresses a sober yetat the same time sporty attitude, not folding and closing a cir-cle with a diameter of about 35/40 meters. All of this is obtain-able even at sustained rpm speed such as that tested by us, orrather 2,000 rpm, which corresponds to 17 knots of speed. Themotors are particularly reactive despite the vessel tonnage, andthe full rpm speed from a still start is obtained after 25 secondsof acceleration. Both the longitudinal and transversal on boardweight distribution are well thought out, which confers a wellbalanced asset, very useful in the case of rough seas or havingto return to the port in limited conditions.

Comment about the hullWe are dealing with a semi-displacement vessel that adoptsa Dual-Mode hull, designed purposely to navigate any kindof sea. The hull has a singular form which does not elude theattentive eye, with long curvatures along the keel, with a so-called vertically cut wheel and skates with accentuatedrough edges, able to provide a semi-displacement or semi-planing bearing, depending how the navigation is set up andhow the motor power is utilized, which obviously depend onthe maritime conditions and on ones own moving times. Thematerials utilized in the construction phase of the vessel arequalitatively flawless beginning at the hull, embellished withvinyl ester resins for the first layers which remain under thefloating line, as these are materials mostly resistant toosmosis, to which stratifications of isophthalic resins areadded, all rigorously positioned by hand. Besides these, there is the PVC high-quality, which integrates the structureof the walls and of the deck. The engine room and the areasmost subject to possible collisions are stratified withsandwhich structure. The rest of the hull structures utilizecomposite materials.

a very useful bench facing the way in navigation. Two guests,in fact, can sit next to the captain. The key word is versatility. We are on board a boat of an over-all length of 9.43 m. If such a rigging had not been devised, choices would have hadto be made: bathing platform or wide cockpit? Bench seat forthe co-pilot or seats for the dining room? In the dinette there isa galley located astern of the steering console, while the sleep-ing area provides two cabins and a bathroom. The mastercabin is forward and the double berth is big enough. The samecannot be said for the second which has. a bed , of 194 x 105cm. It is a room intended for children rather than for two adultguests. Excellent headroom space exceeding 190 cm, both inthe forward cabin, bathroom and in the entrance to the guestcabin. he Nc9 designed by Garroni Studyis characterized by a rigging madeof versatile elements. The linear benchof the cockpit is mounted on two rails for easysliding. By moving it towards the bow you willhave a wider stern platform. When you are atanchor and you want to have a swim, this iscertainly an appreciated solution. If you wantinstead a more spacious cockpit, just slide thebench towards the stern. The walkable area isthus increased and you’ll have a more com-

fortable living area. The same concept is also used in thedinette. On the starboard side there are two little linear sofaswith the table in the middle. The two sofas are obviously opposite eachother to make a din-ing area available. The bench seat further forward is howeverconvertible, meaning that the back tilts and slides. The result is

on deck, we like the choice of the pulpit. This is stopped andclosed with a stay and also features a foldable ladder. So if youare moored at the bow going ashore is easy. We don’t like hav-ing a second anchor on the astern bathing platform. The fixedbow with the “iron” and the chain is certainly very practical andready-to-use. If you must take a second stern anchor or if youwant to moor at a bow dock in a marina without mooring rope, the pulpit is really useful. On the contrary, if you want to moorstern-, you will have to remember those 40 protruding cen-timetres. Finally, the rigging of a “family boat” must not neglect safety. NC9 has the life raft, within reach in the cockpit. There are numer-ous handrails almost everywhere. The forward passage is wellprotected. From a family boat you expect a quiet cruise and this is thecase. Jeanneau has decided to give only one option for theengine. It is a 260 hp Volvo D4.It is not very powerful. There aresix of us on board. Rather than an average family, we are anextended family, not only in number but also for the testers“waistbands”. The transmission with sterndrive gives excellentmanoeuvrability to the NC 9, both at sea and at low revs. Plan-ing times are certainly not fast and, while accelerating, it isadvisable to use flaps and trim. The visibility in the displacementphase is compromised because the boat is a bit trimmed bythe stern. The maximum speed is only 24.6 knots but its single260 hp engine offers the advantage of very low consumption:33 litres/h are needed to plane and only 52 at the highestspeed. On the other hand, have you ever seen a camper whizat the speed of light?

he Carolina 25 is an agile hull, strong for its slightly more than eight metersof total length, which in this case, preciselybecause of the external motorization, are liv-able up until there last centimeter. It is easyto handle even alone, but it is not towable, and is equipped with a cabin for a couple, with included but not separate services. Theinternal space is furnished with a woodenlocker that can store an optional refrigerator,

with lateral pouches which pass along the bed, with hold-ers on the underside of the ceiling, which terminate with anopening of a collection of fishing rods, with spotlights, crawl space and the general electric control panel. The bedis obtained in the classic solution of a stackable dinette, orrather two single beds that can unite into a single queen-sized bed. Passing to the outside, at the prow, the Carolina 25 hasa continuous iron pulpit, a locker for the anchor, a bowslide ring, two English style bollards, navigation lights andtwo clam cleats. The walls are 56 centimeters high in orderto facilitate prey recovery. The one at the stern has a bigextractable tank for fishing with two entrances, and anoptional entrance for living prey, with a recirculation andwaste pump.

TThe testThe appointment is at the Santo Stefano Port (GR), on asunny day with waves no higher than 50 centimeters. Weare two people on the hull, and in addition to us, there isthe Yamaha coupler, each at 225 horsepower, and thesafety equipment. This combination may seem a bit exces-sive, seeing as though we will reach a top speed of 51knots, and it would be more convenient to conserve themotors and consumption, combining a new generation200 horsepower coupler. Tested in the US with this solution, the importer assures usthat the speed, consumption and economic benefits justi-fy the choice. But let’s get back to the test: the motorization of 450 totalhorsepower that we are using is definitely very satisfyingfor those who love pure adrenaline. The hull enters plan-ning without nosing up in only 3 seconds and maintainsthat balance even at 15 knots with the motors at around2,500 rpm. Slight pressure on the lever suffices to obtain an accelera-tion that brings speed, already at 3,000 RPM, beyond 25knots, guaranteeing a good pace and consumptions equalto 40 litres an hour. At 4,500 rpm it navigates beyond 40knots and the stability is notable: the correct counterbal-ance of onboard weight and of the structure allows the hullto always be layed out favorably, with the beam sea, in thegarden and at the prow. In this type of situation, we havethe opportunity to appreciate – even during full keel impact– the total absence of on board splashing. We obtain fullspeed bringing the trim to 70% of its course and at 6,000rpm, and the motors at a speed of 51 knots. Consump-tions obviously rise and go beyond 120 lt/h; at this pace,a certain level of driving experience is required. Driving atthis speed for a long time is very tiring, but the attitude ofthe hull is always reassuring.

ConsoleThe console has threeinclined floors where

the installation of all of themotor instruments, a GPSand an echosounder, a VHF

radio, tin interrupter and anhydraulic steering wheel, isplanned. In order toimplement the wiring moreeasily, the consol tips overtowards the stern. The

Technical comment about the hullThe vessel is manufactured by hand by a specialized staff. Inaddition, every hull is tested in ocean waters in order to

assay the robustness of every meteorological condition. Thematerials are vinyl ester fiberglass for the first layers and thanisophthalic to complete the stratification of the multi-axles. There isnot much wood on board, planned only for few components on theinside of the cabin. The project was developed by Lou Codega, whogave priority both to the navigation quality of the hull and safety, and fishing. The hull proposes a deadrise of 24 degrees at the stern, with the slide planes deteriorating towards the prow, where theyculminate in a profound V. The floors are furnished with hydropedals, two on each side. The motorization, both in mono and bi-solution, is applied at the Armstrong bracket, which improvesnavigation while at the same time not reducing cockpit space.

than two miles to a gallon for vehicles weighing nearly aton. The owner can verify this through the electronic equipment, using Honda dashboards or a display connected to theelectronic control unit of the engine via the NMEA 2000protocol. Besides being able to read the data of instanta-neous consumption, a special green light named Eco indi-cates the operation of the Ecomo electronic system, gen-erally active at all cruise speeds, on average between2,500 and 5,000 rev/ min. In realizing this engine, the big Japanese company has alsorevised the size and shape of the nose cone which con-tains the gearbox inverter. Thanks to a better hydrody-namic, the performance at high speeds is excellent andsome of the tested boats have even exceeded 30 knots. Honda wanted to make this engine easy to use even forbeginners and for this reason it has developed a kit thatallows one to extend the rudder angle from 60 ° to 100 °for a better maneuverability, as happens with those carsthat, having a very tight turning radius, are easier to park. The accessory is completed with the rudder angle indica-tor to be set on the bridge.Fishermen will appreciate another function: the electronicadjustment of the minimum speed to choose exactly theideal pace for trawler fishing. With selected gear, by meansof a button, it is possible to adjust the idle speed from 700to 1000 rev / min with 50 laps. In practice, this outboardhas a function that produces the same effect as the trollingvalve for inboard boats. An important contribution to safety is provided by thedevice to adjust the angle of tilt. By using the trim buttoninserted in the control lever, the outboard is raised up onlyto a certain point and to exceed the maximum level set itis necessary to act on a switch located on the engine. Thisobviously reduces the possibility of making trim errors acci-dentally while sailing.

he 40 hp motors represent amajor portion of the outboardmarket and, until last season, Honda hadnot offered the same opportunities as itscompeting brands. We are not referring totechnology, reliability, quality, fuel economyand performance which are essential valuesfor all products of the Japanese brand, but toanother feature: the maximum output power.

We are sure that all 40 hp engines are actually able to pro-vide them, but most of them come from thermal unitscapable of producing 60 or more hp. Finally, the gap hasbeen filled and Honda 3-cylinder in-line 998 cc engine and12 valves, capable of a maximum power of 60 hp, is nowavailable also with a limited power version of 40 hp with theinitials BF40 E. Is this enough to make it a great engine? No, there is much more, such as electronic managementsystems that allow high level performance. The unit is,indeed, equipped with the Blast technology which controlsthe stoichiometric ratio and the ignition timing for obtain-ing acceleration even when this small outboard is installedon boats more than 5 meters long. Power, as we know, isnot everything. An engine must also have high torque val-ues that can bring the boat in planing rapidly and push itto high cruising speed even at full load. The Blast technology does exactly this only when neces-sary, just to avoid wasting energy when not needed. Alsothe Ecomo function has the same purpose that allows areduction of consumption by automatically adjusting the air/fuel mixture according to the speed and load on theengine. These are not only words. We have tested five dif-ferent boats (three inflatable, a small fishing boat and anopen motorboat) finding data that confirms the actualprogress achieved through the electronic systems of motorcontrol. Consumption is a strong point of all Hondaengines, but the new 40 hp beats all records with more

The testWe have tested the BF40 E Honda on five different boats toverify the behavior in many different situations: three rubberboats with different hulls, equipment and weights, a fishing boatwith considerable displacement and an open motorboatequipped for family day cruises. On all boats the engine wasconfigured to deliver the maximum power.

Flyer 560 SportageIt is the best equipped dinghy (therefore the heaviest) amongthose tested. It is one of the most stylistically advanced mod-els (designed by Christian Grande) and offers an excellent livingarea. It has a double row of seats convertible into sundecks andit is built with a molded counter that finishes the inside of lock-er in a glossy way. Under the conditions of the test the weighttouched the ton, and nonetheless it reached a maximum speedof 29 knots which shows how the BF40 engine has a hightorque even at maximum speed.

MV 18’ TechnologyThe Motonautica Vesuviana boat is built largely by resininfusion vacuum, i.e. with a technologically advanced sys-tem rarely used for models of this size. The shipyarddevotes much attention to the design of hulls with maxi-mum efficiency and the combination with the BF40 E pro-vides outstanding results. With a test displacement ofapproximately 860 kg, the dinghy touches 29.5 knots andat cruising speeds, between 15 and 20 knots, it runs over2 miles with a liter.

Blending Italian and foreign manufacturing know-how, while promotingItalian style and prioritizing customer demands is Piergiorgio Scarani’s

philosophy. At the helm of Rio Yachts,Scarani’s thoughts on thecompany’s half-century-long success

Thoughts and words colleceted by Franco Michienzi

io Yachts’ history is a passionatefamily saga, born on the idyllicshores of Lake Iseo. Now withbranches worldwide, the still family-ownedcompany has chosen to remain firmly rootedin its tradition of following customer demandstep by step, rather than being tempted toincrease production, cut costs and boostinternational sales relentlessly, at any price.Rio’s story is reflected in that of the family’s

second generation scion, Piergiorgio Scarani, born in Bres-cia in 1968, now at the company’s helm. Piergiorgio cut his teeth in the family business, working inthe shipyard fresh out of high school. But it was after get-ting his degree in Business Administration from the presti-gious Bocconi University in Milan that he began officially towork for the company, gaining experience in every depart-ment, even though he has always favored the designdepartment. How have you been dealing with this long period of cri-sis, which seems to have become a chronic feature ofthe current economic situation?Over the last few years the world has undergone a totaltransformation, both on the general economic scene and inthe nautical sector in particular, especially as far as the USAand Europe are concerned. It will surely be a while till the sit-uation gets straightened out.Our company has long history. We have been in the busi-ness for fifty years, and during this last decade, we havegradually risen to become one of the top manufacturers inour field, thanks to our emphasis on quality products andgood customer relations. This policy has really paid off, asevidenced by the fact that we have weathered the crisis far

Rbetter than other Italian companies who perhaps gambledon greater sales volumes and vaster distribution systems. While we are invoicing less than in the past, we are, in anycase, satisfied. You have also been investing…Yes, we’ve never lost faith in the market so we have takena long-term approach, made possible also because we arepart of a solid network of companies. This has allowed usto invest in the production of new models and to continueto provide assistance to boat owners. Is being 50 an asset?Absolutely, experience is our strong point. Today’s yachtpurchaser is more careful and prefers to rely on more estab-lished shipyards. In this sense, the market has already beenculled.

Piergiorgio Scarani has been

the managing director of Rio

Yachts since 2003, replacing

the firm’s founder, his father

Luigi, who passed away in

2011, the year of the

company’s 50th anniversary.

Haven’t you ever considered moving your productionabroad? There are surely a number of new markets beginning toemerge in the nautical sector. Some of them, Brazil forexample, have the potential of developing to reach our ownlevels, while others, like China, will surely require more timeto mature. If we in the west possess the know-how whileit is elsewhere that markets are expanding, we will have tofigure out a way to work together. Our choice has been tobet on those markets, Brazil chief among them, not somuch as a target for exportation, as territories to beexplored as potential secondary domestic markets.Although the primary phase coincides with a exporting ourproducts to these countries, to start getting our nameknown on their markets, our long-term goals go beyondexportation. Do you believe that Brazil can actually become amature and consistent market, despite the ramificationsof the current crisis, such as the protectionist stance ofthe local government and their fluctuating regulations?Developing countries are tumultuous, which limits theirstructural capacities and therefore require great patience.Since we are a family-run company and thus cannot bepresent everywhere, we have chosen to focus on just a fewparts of the world, becoming very visibly and actively pres-ent there. It is a long, hard process.

How important do you think Italian-made quality reallyis?Very important, and for two distinct reasons. First of allbecause our expertise and craftsmanship is world famous.Secondly because our shipyards have a competitive edgein terms of prestige. So what do we need to do to defend the “made-in-Italy”label?I believe that first of all we need to integrate Italian entre-preneurship with that of other countries. There are thou-sands of ways to accomplish this, from Italian designersoffering their services to foreign companies (as we haveoften seen successfully implemented in the automobileindustry), to Italian companies who open foreign plants andthose who merge with foreign firms. There isn’t a single ruleof thumb: we need to understand whether we are global-ized and “globalizable”.It is the yacht owners themselves who have been pro-viding feedback for new models and improvements…At the moment, production logic has been turned around. The company has a number of projects in the works, butwhereas in the past we would present our designs to thepublic, nowadays we contact our faithful clients, introducethem to the projects already underway, and take sugges-tions from them, perhaps adapting our design to their sug-gested modifications, or altering our project priorities.

We are a part of historyIn the wake of the economic boom and the "Italian miracle" of the early 60s, Luigi Scarani andAnna Maria Ziliani decided to start a boat and glider manufacturing company called AvionauticaRio on Lake Iseo. A few years later Luigi’s brother, Carlo joined the company. Thus begins thestory of Rio Yachts, a boat yard known for its long-range vision, as evinced in particular at theend of the “dolce vita” era. In that period, when production was beginning to decline, Rio set offto launch an “everyman’s boat.” In addition to traditional models, Rio of hulls the period came in arange of innovative materials, shapes and sizes. ABS thermoplastic plates were used, which ledto collaboration with ANIC, part of the ENI Group, using their product, Ravikral. This allowed Rio tooffer boats requiring very little maintenance, easy to construct because they are mold-produced.Furthermore, the polyurethane foam injected between the inner and outer shells made the craftvirtually unsinkable. Obviously, these smaller boats bore a more reasonable price tag.Emblematic of this period is the Rio 310 (3.10 overall length and using anoutboard motor of up to 4HP). Fifteen of these vessels were producedbetween 1971 and 1974.This line distinguished the1970s which ushered in a period of continuousgrowth for Rio. Opening building facilities and branch offices in Spain and France, Rio’s boomculminated with the production of a line of “work boats” in the 1980s that supplied more than200 motorboats to the Italian Carabinieri Police Force. The range was still in expansion whenLuigi Scarani passed the baton to his son Piergiorgio in the year 2000. The elder s Scarani passedaway in 2011 at the age of 77.

Have you considered producing small-to-medium sizedflydeck models designed for family trips? This is a point that has been hotly debated at the boatyard. We need to decide whether to shift our production torespond to market demands or remain true to our reputa-tion in terms of image, performance and innovation. Ourshas always been a niche market, calling for a limited pro-duction line, and this has always been a conscious choiceon our part. We’ll see…From a manufacturing point of view, what kind of pro-duction processes do you favor? Our resins are made of vinylester, especially for the “littleboat” that is only kept in the water a few months a year. Forthe next size up, we use infusion techniques, although notfor the entire hull, whose frame is made up of an assem-blage of traditionally laminated and infusion-generated com-ponents.

Is there room for a technologicalrevolution in this sense?I have visited a number ofboat yards, and I think thatthose that have increased theiroutput by industrializing theirproduction processes andcutting costs end up withboats that are very basic and“poor.” Conversely, for thosethat aim for quality, technologycan be useful, but certainly notin terms of lowering costs.Nowadays they are produc-ing planing hulls designedfor lower speeds andgreater savings. What doyou think of that? There is a kind of performanceboat that needs to be a certain

size - the typical 10,000 HP “speedboat” that can be as muchas 20 meters long. A boat like this designed for speed andexcitement can certainly benefit from being made lighter andmore efficient. But there are other types of craft that aredesigned to be a bit slower, allowing a different approach to lifeat sea which provide a different sort of autonomy. We are focus-ing on completing the range of the former, so at the momentcan only look on while these new types appear on the market.I think that this segment could spur on the market, as far asmedium/large craft (starting from 20 meters) are concerned. How far do you think your range will go?We are oriented between 10 and 20 meter range and planto remain there, although we have received requests to pro-duce smaller vessels. Many other boat yards have shiftedthe focus of their production to making 8-9 meter boats butneed to figure out whether they can guarantee the quality ofsuch small craft. I can’t rule out Rio producing boats likethis, too, in the future.

«I believe oursuccess in

dealing with thecurrent crisis comesfrom maintaining acloserelationshipwith ourcustomers, arelationship whichcontinues even post-sale».

o you love the sea, captain?»«Yes! I love it! The sea is everything. Itcovers seven tenths of the terrestrialglobe. Its breath is pure and sound. Itis the immense desert where man isnever alone, seeing as though he feelshis life tremble beside himself. The seais nothing but a vehicle of supernatu-ral and phenomenal existence; it isnothing but love, it is the infinite livingbeing». This is how captain Nemo

responded to Professor Arronaux during one of their adventu-res. A thought that we like to tie to Giovanna Locatelli, and artistfrom our perspective, an alchemist from her. Giovanna loves theimmensity, the mysterious profoundness, and the eternal move-ment of the sea. She loves the idea of an infinite space thatseparates, and at the same time unites through unknownunderground lines. Her creations nurture from the relationshipwith the people for whom she works. An immediate relations-hip in which she reaches a very intense level: «It is like love, inthe clean sense of the word, and loving is what the owner, forwhom I must furnish the yacht, is doing. Therefore, I love hisboat, even though it is not the one of my dreams or that whichI prefer». Giovanna Locatelli has a very strong motivation whenshe must work for a boat owner: «When I go to the sea, I am inthe best conditions to create: being bare foot and feeling the 127

«I believe in simple things, and that the real innovation is returning tothe past and recapturing it. For this reason, I feel a bit like analchemist: I didn’t invent anything and I don’t have any desire to

do so, but I like taking something that already exists and proposing it in adifferent way».

hot and cold. By myself, I create, I think and reach a preciseidea that I then transmit to my owner».Her creative story begins in 1984, almost for fun, during a three-week vacation in a sailboat: she did not know the sea, but justlike happens to many of us, it changed her life. «In the middleof the sea – and when I say “in the middle of the sea” I reallymean “in the middle” – I reexamine everything, and from therethe best inspirations arrive».Like the silver peak with which she realizes unique products, alldifferent from each other, in her fashion house in Lecco. It is notpossible to mass-produce them, as each work has its ownstory, which is often woven in with that of the owner. The equi-librium is certainly a dominant trait in her work, her productshave a common element that makes them remain in harmony,in any place they are inserted. Research of alternative ideas isconstant, yet always remains in the essence of the utilized pro-duct. Giovanna Locatteli defines her creations as expressionsthat must provoke emotion. «Yes, they must provoke emotion,I am certain. I had my biggest success with clients who, stop-ping by my stand, told me that they were not interested in whatthey were seeing, but in the strong emotion generated by theensemble of everything». Transforming energy into an object also requires studying mate-rials and technology, besides continuous experimentation. Inalmost 30 years of activity, she realized more than 4,000 pro-ducts. The things that she produces certainly provide an avenuethrough which to transfer emotion, communicate and put one-self in relation with the rest of the world. She has a special rela-tionship with foreigners, she loves Americans and there incredi-ble expressions, because they are very enthusiastic. «They giveyou incredibly strength: there is an American client, the classicbusiness man, who when he arrived by me, dropped his suitca-se and called me “piccolo Leonardo”. This is something that onlyan American can say. A French person can say to you “trèssuperbe”, but it just isn’t the same thing. Saying “piccolo Leo-nardo” means recognizing the greatness of our cultural patrimony, and I remember this with joy because it made me laugh… butbeing defined in this way was truly an amazing thing for me».

Turks & Caicos: Salt Cay

Salt Cay, nestled in the Grand Turk Lagoon in the Caribbean, takes its name from the salterns that made up almost the entireisland, now a UNESCO world-heritage site. With only about ninesquare kilometers at their disposal, the island’s very fewinhabitants – about sixty – make their homes in a pair of villages, primarily Balfour Town. The Cay’s loveliest beaches are along thenorthern coast and extend without interruption for four fullkilometers. But it is by boat that the beauty of the island can bebest appreciated: the waters surrounding Grand Turk e Salt Cayare characterized by their incredibly crystalline transparency.Whole coral landscapes populated by a multitude of coloredfishes, as well as dolphins and rays are still visible up to thirty-five meters below the surface. Fishing for barracudas and allkinds of tuna is nothing short of miraculous. The plankton-richwaters of Salt Cay make them the best spot in the Caribbean forwhale-watching when the great cetaceans migrate through theregion between January and March.
