Our first issue of Back at the Ranch was published in

January 2006, which means, this issue, January 2011,

is Back at the Ranch’s five-year anniversary issue!

On one hand, it’s hard to believe that this is our 61st

issue. however, when you see our attic where we

keep our archived back issues or the FTP folders and

hard drives that house our backup files, it quickly

becomes easier to believe!

Maybeck community Shares their Sense of communityMost of us moved to 4S to get that traditional sense of community and

the Maybeck community has done just that. They have developed

a special bond over the last couple of years. During the fires, one

of the neighbors started a Google group and encouraged all of the

Maybeck neighbors to join so they could stay informed on what was

going on with the community while everyone was displaced during

the fires. after everyone returned home, they really started getting to

know each other through email and then block parties.

wrap and a mountain of gifts that need to find a new

home in your home. It can be a bit overwhelming

and even depressing.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed saying “2010.” It kind of rolled off your tongue. “2011” doesn’t roll quite as well. Regardless of whether 2011 is fun to say or not, I can’t deny that it’s full of new promises and anticipation. For us at Back at the Ranch, not only does January 2011 ring in a dazzling new year; it also rings in our Five-Year Anniversary. How exciting – Back at the Ranch is five years and sixty-one issues old!

I haven’t been with the paper since its inception, but pretty close! I’ve been around long enough to watch it evolve, transform and grow. I must say, it’s been a thrill-ing ride! Throughout 2011, you’ll find something in each issue that brings back stories and events from previous years as we check in on the people and stories that have touched our hearts in the community. We’d love to get you involved so if you have any special stories or photos of your journey with 4S Ranch, we’d truly enjoy sharing them with the community.

A huge thanks to all of you who regularly submit information through our “On Your Doorstep” section: Boys & Girls Club, 4S Ranch Library, 4S Ranch~Del Sur Foundation, San Diego Parks and Rec, 4S Ranch HOA, 4S Ranch Little League, 4S Softball and so many

more. Thanks to all of you who put yourselves out there to be featured in our “People In Your Neighborhood” section. Businesses, thanks to you for letting us all know what you have to offer so that the community has easy access and background to countless different services.

This year, we look forward to an expanded lifestyle sec-tion and some very unique content. If you’ve ever wanted to submit a story for Back at the Ranch, to showcase some-one special through these pages, or to share your expertise through an informative guest article, 2011 is the year to make it happen. The new year brings new space and some exciting new ways to connect with your neighbors. Our first issue of Back at the Ranch was published in

As next door neighbors, Tim and I had a very clear vision for Back at the Ranch when we launched our first issue – “connecting neighbors both to each other and to local resources with the goal of building community.” While our vision was clear, we had no way to know how much this publica-tion would influence our lives on both a personal and professional level. Today, the company we created to publish Back at the Ranch (Fountain Media Group, Inc.), now publishes neighborhood publications that reach well over 70,000 readers each month. It’s pret-ty amazing to have built something like that with a next door neighbor. But, it also goes to show how amazing a connection with a neighbor can be!

When Tim and I first started out with this pub-lication, the questions we wanted to answer were, “What can we do to help secure and strengthen a better sense of community. How can we help neigh-bors enjoy the same kind of connection that we as next door neighbors enjoy? How can we encourage neighbors to bring their talents and skills together to improve the community that surrounds them?”

For five years now, we have enjoyed watching people throughout the community start new proj-ects, give to others, launch new businesses, form new foundations and volunteer their time - whether to schools, youth sports or special causes. For 60 issues, we have provided pages for the schools to com-municate with the greater community month after month – to solicit involvement, support and funds. We’ve provided a way for people to publicly thank neighbors and businesses who have had a major impact on their lives. We’ve allowed community organizations the opportunity to reach every home in 4S Ranch with their announcements and accolades, saving them countless dollars in providing a consistent way to communicate monthly with resi-dents and ensure the support needed to keep these kinds of services alive and well in this community.

We are so proud of what we have been able to provide to 4S Ranch and the surrounding area since our start in 2006. There are so many fantastic people in the community doing great things and Back at the Ranch is proud to provide a channel to connect residents to each other and to the causes that impact them most.

We are equally proud of the advertisers you find in these pages and what they represent. These are businesses who recognize the importance of community involvement and want to be an integral part of this unique community. It is because of these advertisers that we can provide all of these

community organizations a way to connect with residents on a consistent montly basis at no cost. The businesses you see advertising in these pages are an important part of what makes this community successful because they constantly give back and provide ways to keep us all close to home – for our shopping, our services and our events. They support our schools, they pro-vide unique neighborhood events, and they find creative ways to connect the success of their businesses right back to the people who support them.

Supporting our local business providers is more important now than ever as the developer has stepped back, the promotions have ended, and the marketing that once set the tone for 4S Ranch is no longer under the wings of an ad agency. It’s now up to residents to tell the story, set the tone and define the future of 4S Ranch. To truly secure a strong sense of community and a thriving small town living environment, requires the active participa-tion and support of residents to support each other’s businesses, their neigh-

borhood schools and the organizations and clubs that provide recreation, sports and community services.

So, our January 2011 issue of Back at the Ranchgoes out to neighbors who have started traditions or even businesses together….people who are truly committed to the sense of community here in 4S Ranch and doing whatever they can to strengthen and secure it for the future. It also goes out to those of you who haven’t been here as long. We look for-ward to getting to know you – helping you grow your own businesses and create your own family traditions in a community that values the uniqueness in each of us.

If we each continue to contribute our own views, ideas, skills and connections in any way we can, we will protect our community, the investment in our homes, and the quality of our lives in both the pres-ent and the future. This is not the year to sit back and relax. Make 2011 the year you take action on your idea. Why not get that idea out and make something happen? You never know where it might lead! Use this publication as a place to start.

If you’ve ever wondered how we go about ‘selecting’ our stories, you may be surprised to know how easy it

is. Maybe you’d like to be one of our featured families or to contribute an article on a topic that concerns you or is in your area of expertise. Maybe you have an idea for a group you’d like to start or a cause you’d like to support. Maybe you have a club or group that already meets regularly; we’d love to spotlight your group and tell your story. If you have a cause you’re supporting and would love the support of your community, let us know. If you’re opening a new business and want to spread the word, give us a call.

2011 is going to be an exciting year. So many neighbors are starting new endeavors and new eras in life. Tough economic times have caused all of us to take inventory of our lives and to focus on the people closest to us. Community is where it all starts! By supporting our neighbors and their success, we all benefit.

It’s residents like Scott Voak and businesses like Voak Homes that make 4S Ranch the

special place it is. Scott Voak has done a tremendous job of branding himself and his

name here in 4S Ranch. Every month since 2006, you have seen him on the back cover of Back at the Ranch. His business has been an important part of bringing the com-munity together each month through these pages. It’s just one of many ways that Scott is such a great example of how to integrate your personal and professional lives.

Scott didn’t start out looking to get into real estate. With an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Scott started out in semi conductor sales. Wanting more, he earned his MBA in Entrepreneurship - thus opening up more opportunities for himself. One such opportunity came when he was hired by Sol Price (Price Club) to run a start-up. This presented him with invaluable business experience.

Scott began practicing real estate in San Diego in 2001, but firmly estab-lished himself as a realtor when he and his wife Cory landed in 4S Ranch in 2003. Real estate was booming back then, but Scott realized early on how important it would be to invest in the very community he called home. So, he not only worked to establish his namesake and reputation, he also helped support and build 4S Ranch into what it is today. Scott and Cory have had their hands in many ventures here in 4S, including subsidizing Voak

Meet Debi Renken

Voak Homes - Scott Voak

If you don’t already know Debi, she is a face you should get to know in the New Year. As the editor of Back at the Ranch, Debi can connect you with the pages of this publica-tion. She can write a glowing review of your business or help you promote your fundraiser or event. As a busy mom, she can tell you the latest happenings at Del Norte High School or Oak Valley Middle. She can hook you up with the best travel strategy for an upcoming soccer tournament or a creative fundraising idea to support the entire organization.

Debi is the epitome of life in 4S Ranch…busy and purposeful. For her, life is all about family, serving others and building long-term, sustainable relationships, while still managing to laugh and have fun.

Debi has been with Back at the Ranch since our first year in 2006. She has lived here in 4S Ranch with her family since the early days of its development. Her husband Jay is a Senior Project Manger for Cubic Corp. Always a kid at heart, Jay loves music and sports. He plays both soccer and softball here in 4S as well as fantasy football and baseball throughout the seasons. Debi and Jay have two children. Trevor recently turned 16. He attends DNHS and LOVES soccer. He hopes to pursue soccer in college and beyond. Karli turns 13 this month. She is also quite the athlete and loves sports, but she also LOVES dance. She is currently enrolled in seven dance classes! She loves Oak Valley Middle School and participates in ASB.

As a family, the Renkens love to travel. This summer they will be going to Sweden for the Youth World Cup. They have also enjoyed recent trips to

Greece and are always working on their next itinerary. The Renkens, however, are thrilled to have 4S Ranch as their home base. The kids absolutely love it here and enjoy know-ing the friends they have developed over the last eight years are friends they will have for life.

Debi grew up in Italy and traveled a lot as a ‘Navy brat.’ Being here in 4S Ranch has given her the first opportunity in her life to really enjoy being in one place for an extended period of time. She enjoys it so much that she admittedly gets too involved, but it’s always in the things she loves. This

year, she’s helping the DNHS soccer team. She serves on the board of FCSD Soccer (now SDSC). She is also team manager for Karli’s soccer team and is always on hand to drive for a field trip or help at school.

In her spare time? Ha! While there’s not a lot of that kind of time right now in Debi’s life, she does love to run and hits the trails every chance she gets. Movies and reading are also high on her list of things she would love to get more of. When it comes to her work with Back at the Ranch, Debi enjoys having the opportunity to write. She loves hearing the feedack she gets from readers and neighbors. And, she is fascinated listening to people share their stories while meeting so many cool people right here in her backyard.

Make it a New Year’s resolution to get to know Debi Renken. Next time you see her out and about, stop and say hi! But, if she has a camera in her hand, fix up your hair real quick and smile! You just might find yourself in the next issue!

Field (one of the ball fields down at the community park). Voak Homes regularly sponsors Little League and softball teams and as well as the purchase of equipment for various sports teams. Scott and Cory became founding members of the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Foundation. Cory also serves on the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors. Scott shares, “By far the best part about being involved in 4S Ranch is the friendships we have developed as we have helped people find their homes.”

Scott and his team are well-versed in every possible aspect of real estate – every detail is covered from staging to marketing and everything in between. Scott has exten-sive negotiating experience and has handled hundreds of transactions to the benefit of his clients. In fact, Voak Homes has now sold more resale homes in 4S Ranch than any other agency. Scott Voak has played a key role in helping many people buy and sell their homes while helping the community develop and grow. Plain and simple, he knows 4S Ranch. After all, he lives, works,

and even plays here. What little time Scott does have to blow off steam, he spends cooking and enjoying monthly poker nights with the guys. He’s one of us.

Maybeck community Shares their Sense of community

Most of us moved to 4S to get that tradi-tional sense of community and the Maybeck Community has done just that. We have devel-oped a special bond over the last couple of years. During the fires, one of the neighbors started a Google group and encouraged all of the Maybeck neighbors to join so we could stay informed on what was going on with our community while we were all displaced during the fires. After we all returned home, we started getting to know each other through email and then by getting together and having summer block parties. Most recently, we had a Holiday Block party at one of the homes in our community. Another one of our neighbors also started a women’s s group where we all meet one Sunday out of the month. We opened up these events to all of our Maybeck neighbors and have had wonderful turnout. We are seeing our neighborhood grow with the addition of many new little ones and with the final home phases completed. We have an incredible group of neighbors that continue to make our community a very warm and inviting place to be a part of. We are so proud to live in the 4S Ranch area and most especially the Maybeck community!

Join us for story time and crafts at the 4S Ranch library on Thursday, January 6 from 4-5 pm. New author and local 4S resident, Melissa Botello, will read her extraordinary tale of setting goals and positive thinking. The book is enti-tled “Prince Domar – Discovering His Powers.” After the reading, Melissa will do a project with the kids called “Craft with a Cause.” The project will get kids to think about goals they want to accom-plish and they will create a journal for their goals. The library visit promises to be an instructive, upbeat, fun experience for kids.

The 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community was pleased to participate in the first ever 4S Ranch~Del Sur 5K Thank You Run on Thanksgiving morn-ing. Organized by two of the founders of the Foundation, Ray and Theresa Shay, this special

event was held to emphasize the importance of Thanksgiving and to provide an opportunity for 4S residents to recognize what we have, as well as, the opportunity to give back to our com-munity. All proceeds of the event were shared by the two nonprofits; the 4S Ranch-Del Sur Community Foundation and Helen’s Closet, which is affiliated with the ALS Association of Greater San Diego Chapter. Helen’s Closet was named after Theresa Shay’s mother, Helen Mok. who passed in 2008 from the debilitating disease, ALS is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Over a mere three years, the Foundation has already granted $35,500 to deserving programs and organization serving the 4S~Del Sur com-munities to improve area schools and other com-munity priorities. It has raised over $80,000 in commitments since 2007 and built a community endowment of $36,800 that will benefit the com-munity for generations to come in perpetuity.

Currently, there are 68 members of the 4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation. These individuals have each contributed anywhere from $250 to $1,000 for each year to provide grants to 4S Ranch and Del Sur organizations and causes.

1st annual “Thank You Run” a

Tremendous Success!

About 500 runners joined in the First Annual Thanksgiving Day Run/Walk! It was a bright, crisp November morning and you could feel the anxiety in the air as runners and walkers waited for the sound of the starting gun. Then suddenly, the much anticipated moment arrived and the “founding 500” moved forward with a rush! Some raced, some ran, some jogged and some walked, but it seems that everyone who entered finished and everyone had good things to say about the run.

Chris Jacobs came in first overall with a time of 16:52, Linsey Sandoval was the first adult female finisher with a time of 20:15, Troy Shay finished first for the kids with a time of 23:17 and Makenna Grewe finished first for the girls with a time of 23:25. Congrats to everyone who participated!

Jeff Grissom and David Deal, Girls and Boys Division Directors of the 4S Ranch Youth Soccer Association (4SRYSA), are proud to announce the comple-tion of another great fall soccer season. With over 800 local kids involved in recreational soccer on 60+ teams, it made for an exciting and fun season for all involved.

4SRYSA offers a great soccer expe-rience for all kids ages 4-14 and is run entirely by volunteers from the presi-dent to the coaches. These volunteers have helped make the league incredibly successful over the years. We want to thank each and every one of these coaches and parents for their time and effort in helping support the children and 4SRYSA.

Each division, Girls and Boys U8 to U10, typically finishes out their sea-son with a traditional “end of season” tournament. Unfortunately, due to rain, the Girl’s and Boy’s U7 Divisions were unable to complete their tour-nament as scheduled. Therefore, the Girls U7 regular season co-champions were the Purple Power Puffs, coached by Babak Azad, and the Yellow Dragons, coached by Bruce Williams. The Boy’s U7 Division Champions were the Green Dragons, coached by Slava Khristich. “Runner-up” goes to the Orange Fireballs, coached by Travis Medley.

The GU8 division had an exciting semi-final tournament game, which came down to penalty kicks! In the end, Purple Lightning pulled out a 2-0 victory to take the championship title over a tough Pink Dynamite team, coached by Rhoda Skeen. Proud Purple Lightning Coach Tony Pidding credits their success in the tourney and in the season to a tough defense and to a great group of girls who worked together as a team.

In the GU10 Division, the Candy Cane Kickers, coached by Derek Howe and Tim Anderson, upset the regular season champion Pink

Panthers, to win the GU10 tournament. The champi-onship game ended in regu-lation time with a 1-1 tie but the Candy Cane Kickers seized victory in a thrilling 3-2 penalty kick shootout.

In the BU8 Division, the Scorpions continued their undefeated season by winning the tournament championship game over a fierce Green Dragons team

lead by Patti Enispar. Scorpions coach Brian Pond credits the team’s success to a tremendous amount of dedication and determination by all of the players.

In the BU10 Division the 4S Flames, coached by Chris Calhoun defeated the Red Minotaurs, coached by Ben Russ. Coach Chris Calhoun described the 4S Flames win as exciting and nerve racking. Coming down to the wire the 4S Flames rose to victory in a nail-biting penalty kick showdown. Tying in regulation time and playing a man down the entire game, the 4S Flames pulled it off due to their tenacity, rapid offensive attacks, strong defense and the same fiery desire they showed all season long.

Congratulations to all of our great teams and their success this season!

Spring Soccer Registration – now Open!

Registration for the 4S Ranch Youth Soccer Association spring season is now open at www.4sranchsoccer.com. The spring season will begin March 12 and will run through May 14 for boys and girls ages 4 to 14. A great oppor-tunity for players of all skill levels including competitive soccer players. The exciting small-sided game format will be used for all age divisions. Don’t miss the chance to register for the spring season!

Little League Season is Getting Underway

4S Ranch Little League gets into full swing this month. The final registration for the spring season is on Tuesday, January 4 from 6-8:30 pm at Frozen Ropes. On Wednesday, January 5, managers will be chosen for the coming season. Tryouts for Juniors will be held on Friday, January 14, and tryouts for Majors, AAA and AA will take place on Saturday, January 15. Practices for all teams will begin on Monday, January 31, and Opening Day will be on March 5. Winter Youth Roller Hockey League

The County of San Diego is now accepting registration for our Recreational Youth Roller Hockey League. Clinics begin January 8! Online registration can be found at www.sdparks.org.

Hockey times are Saturdays 8 am — 1 pm with Upper & Lower divisions for both beginners to advanced players. The cost is $25 per player for ages 5 to 17. Goalie equipment provided, some loaner equipment available as needed.

Monterey Ridge Elementary

A Word from PTA President, Alya Mansi

Monterey Ridge was busy for the first couple of months! We kicked off our running club. (You should see these kids run. They put the road runner to shame.) We also kicked off the Garden Club, a talented group of kids and their parents who plant, water and harvest their crops. We had a successful fall fundraiser that exceeded our goals for the year. Thanks to all the parents for putting up the cash, volunteers for putting up the hours, and teachers for putting up with PTA.

Fall festival this year was simply spectacular. There were ample opportu-nities for the kids to learn about countries, cultures, languages and food. The kids got their passport stamped from more than 15 countries, all without going through a single security line. Book fair was just the event the school needed before Thanksgiving break. Students, parents and teachers got an opportunity to shop for books for their holiday needs, all while helping raise money for the school.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers for their hard work and endless hours they put up organizing parties, communicating with parents, arranging for gifts, volunteering in class and participating in all the PTA events. I want to thank the teachers, principal and staff for their end-less support to the PTA and our kids. Parents, Teachers, and Staff, you guys are amazing! You make this school special for all the kids; you help build memories and tradition that will last forever.

Going forward, Monarchs have a lot to look forward to in 2011. Science fair, staff appreciation week, talent show, fun run, math marathon, spring book fair and a casino night, WOW! That’s a lot! But never fear, with the team here at Monterey Ridge, these events will be wonderful opportunities to strengthen our bond and school spirit.

Our team would like to thank you and your students for helping us make our third annual Halloween Candy Buy Back a great success! We collected 1400 pounds of candy this year, which was 500 pounds more than last year’s collection! Monterey Ridge students generously donated 170 pounds of their Halloween treats this year. Dr. Noel Moser will be matching each pound of candy collected and will be donating $170!

Monterey Ridge 2nd Annual Science Fair

We are thrilled to announce that the 2nd Annual MRES Science Fair will take place on January 25. Science Fair provides students with an increased awareness of science and an opportunity for them to develop posi-tive attitudes about themselves and their work. The science project allows children to use critical thinking and problem solving skills learned in science and in math.

The fair will take place in the MRES MPR. Project set up begins at 8 am on the day of the fair. The MPR will be closed at 9 am sharp for judg-ing, so projects will not be accepted for judging after nine o’clock. Family and friends may view the projects that evening from 5:30 – 7 pm. Projects are expected to remain at school during that time so they may be viewed by all parents and students. All projects may be taken home Tuesday evening at 7 pm.

Superintendent of PUSD, passed away on December 3, 2010 after a brief and sudden illness.

I had the honor of working closely with Don as his Deputy Superintendent for nine years. Don was an exemplary life-long educator and leader in public schools. We were very fortunate to have him share his talents, energy, and commitments to public education with our district. We are all better for his time in Poway, and he will be greatly missed.

Don cared deeply about our students and our school community, and in his own words:

Variety Show Update

The annual Stone Ranch Variety Show will be held January 21 and 27. Auditions are Wednesday, January 5. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, January 12 and 19. If your child is unable to attend either the auditions or rehearsals, please do not sign up as these are mandatory events. Also, these are not “drop off ” events; a parent from each act needs to be at the auditions and rehearsals. During the month of November, you should have received a solicitation letter from the Del Norte Foundation. Simply stated, without your support, we are limited in the ways we can respond to student and staff needs. If every family committed to making a $25/month contribution from now to the end of this school year (or if every family made a one-time $175 annual contri-bution), we could successfully achieve each of the funding goals outlined in the letter you received. You know the old adage… many hands make light work. If everyone can sacrifice just a little, we can accomplish great things collectively. Also, while I’m on the topic, if you haven’t joined our PTSA yet, please consider doing so. Great partnerships make great schools!

Del Norte Cross Country Rocks!

For the first time in school history both DNHS Boys and Girls Teams had a chance to compete for the Valley League Title. Like most sports at Del Norte, this year also marked their first varsity season. On both sides, they had tremendous individual performances and close team finishes. The men finished the season tied with Canyon Crest for 3rd Place in the league behind the strong finishes of Mark Quiroz (12th) and Spencer Hoffman (13th). By finishing in the top 20, these gentlemen earned 2nd Team All Valley League Honors. Mark was also the top freshman finisher in the league.

The girls’ race went down to the wire with the girls just missing out on DNHS’s first League title, losing to Canyon Crest by 6 points (33 to 39). The girls put on dominating individual performances placing four girls in the top 10 to earn 1st Team All League Honors; Ashley Mitchell (4th), Jodi

Simeroth (5th), Katelyn Kalley (7th), and Monica Doyle (10th) and 5 girls in the top 13 with Sierra Kindig taking home 2nd Team All League Honors with her 13th place finish.

The boys also competed in Division IV at the San Diego CIF Championship meet where they fin-ished 2nd and earned a trip to the state meet. Mark Quiroz (7th) and Spencer Hoffman (9th) earned 1st Team All CIF honors and Aaron Reichner (11th), Andrew Muhn (16th), and Jared Brungard (18th) all earned 2nd Team All CIF Honors. At the California State Meet the boys placed 17th in Division IV. Mark Quiroz finished as the fast-est freshman in that division, and the 9th fastest freshman overall in the state. Our Varsity Boys Squad included: Mark Quiroz, Spencer Hoffman, Andrew Muhn, Aaron Reichner, Jared Brungard, Eric Inumerable, and Jared Leitner.

The girls competed in Division IV for the San Diego CIF Section and won the Championship title. Again Ashley Mitchell (2nd), Jodi Simeroth (3rd), Katelyn Kalley (10th) finished in the top 10 to earn 1st Team All CIF Honors. The girls earned a bid to the CIF State Cross Country Championships in Fresno CA on Nov 27th. They finished 8th in the state. Our Varsity squad included: Ashley Mitchell, Jodi Simeroth, Katelyn Kalley, Monica Doyle, Sina Faizy, Sierra Kindig, and Monica Shifflet.

6th Grade Campers Enjoyed the Great Outdoors

Sixth Grade Camp made its way around again and, just like every year, the kids had a blast! This year there were so many eager sixth graders that the students were divided into two groups going during two separate weeks!

Here’s a snapshot of day-to-day actives from one of the OVMS teachers, Mr. Vitti:

“This morning it was a crisp 31 degrees when I arrived to breakfast. We had scrambled eggs, French toast (delicious), pears, homemade biscuits, milk, and water. A great start to a fun day. Students met with me in the

lodge and we went through a few activities together about “ICARE.” Ask your child what “ICARE” means when they return home - I believe you’ll be impressed.

It warmed up this afternoon and all students participated in an activity rotation of rock climbing, a treasure hunt using GPS navigation and written clues, and a fun activity called “toxic river” (Of course it’s not toxic. Actually, there is no water involved at all). Students use strategies, team work, coop-

eration, and respect to figure out how to move from one “island” of the toxic river to the other. I was shocked to watch students strategize on how to move from one “island” to another using communication skills, cooperation and teamwork, and respect for 45 minutes. It was very impressive to watch, and a joy to see children engaged, happy, and respectful to one another.

We made our way to the dining hall for chicken salad (grilled cheese alternative), salad, bread for sandwiches, tortilla chips, bananas, milk, and juice. Boy, were those children hungry after their 2 1/2 hours of activities - and tonight - homemade PIZZA!”

Here’s what a few of the sixth graders felt:Griffin Moody had a really great time and if he could go again next year

he would in a second! Right after his mom picked him up they went out to lunch, and Griffin spoke non-stop about the hilarious counselors and recited the funny stories they shared with the kids.

Garrett Lavin loved the counselors as well - especially the instructions you got when it was time to shower, “Don’t forget to wash your tar pits, your grand canyon and your twigs and berries.”

Kendall Still took lots of fun pictures and she felt the trip to the desert and exploring the caves was the “funnest day”! Kendall also enjoyed getting to know new friends.

If you’re like me, one of your New Year’s resolutions has something to do with: losing weight, getting in shape, exercising more, eating better or some-thing along those lines. These things have been on my list of New Year’s reso-lutions for YEARS. However, in 2011, for the first time, these things are not on my list of to-do’s. Don’t get me wrong, that does not mean I going to let myself go or that I do not have to eat right or exercise. It just means that all of those things have become a part of my daily life in a way that works. I no longer have to make a conscious effort to address them anymore.

So how does that happen? Well, for me, there was a turning point about six years ago. After looking at some of my summer vacation pictures, I realized that I was not happy with my physique. At nearly 40 years old and as a busy dad supporting an active family, I woke up and realized I was about 50 pounds overweight, well over 30% body fat, with both high cholesterol and blood pressure.

I knew I had to make a change, so I started on my way. Figuring I could do it by myself, I spent the first three years of my journey basically spinning my wheels. I tried it all. I did different fad diets. I got an exercise bike and Bowflex machine (after all, who would not want to look like the Bowflex guy right?). I worked hard and was fairly disciplined about it. After three years of going on and off different fad diets and going through spurts of what I thought were good exercise programs, I could trim off some weight, but I was not really where I wanted to be,. That’s when I decided to get some help. There was a fitness studio opening near my home, so I called and setup an appointment. The trainers there set me up on a proper exercise and nutrition program and within a short amount of time I was able to reach and exceed my initial weight loss goals.

Interestingly enough, I discovered that once you reach your goals, you still need to be careful. Even after getting in shape, I found myself slowly increasing in body fat again. Luckily, I was monitoring this regularly, so I was able to adjust and catch it. I guess I figured that because I was in shape and working out regularly, I could eat what I wanted and I would just work it off. I was slowly moving back to eating in my old ways (not by any means like I was before, but just a little here and a little there). I counter-acted this by increasing my volume of exercise. Before I knew it, I was working out 7-8 times a week just to maintain. That’s a lot of time and effort just to maintain. (Hey, I like exercise as much as the next guy,

but this did not seem like a good long-term solution for me.)

This is when I decided to get seri-ous about my food. I started studying food and worked with a nutritionist. I learned about the best foods to support my workouts, overall health, and the foods that just made me feel good when I ate them. After some trial and error, I discovered the perfect balance between the type, timing and amount of food I was consuming to support my ideal body composition and, ultimately, my health, all with a more reasonable amount of exercise. Once I found this balance,

it was a magical place to be. The human body is truly amazing -- give it what it needs to function (proper nutrition and exercise) and your body will transform itself into its ideal body composition. You do not even have to set specific body weight or fat goals for yourself. Your body knows where it naturally needs to be and it will take you there automatically! And, I promise you will like the results!

For me, this is not something that happened overnight. It was a long process to find my ideal balance between food and exercise and, to be honest with you, if you think you can get six pack abs in six weeks, I have a feeling you are going to be disappointed in any program or diet you try. For me, making small changes over time was the only way I could have created a long lasting change in my body and life.

Diets don’t work! You can lose weight on a diet short-term, but most diets restrict something in order to lose weight, which is not a good long-term strategy. The bottom line is, if you go on a diet, eventually you have to come off a diet and if you go back to the food you were eating before, you will eventually gain the weight back (after all, the food you were eating was the cause of the weight gain in the first place).

This year, I challenge you to do something different. Don’t go on a diet…instead, change your diet. How? I’ll be providing some articles here in Back at the Ranch to get you started. I know so many people are struggling with the same issues that I struggled with for years and I hate to see people continually spin their wheels. I remember what it was like and now that I have permanently crossed that thing off my list, I’m going to spend my energy helping others do the same.

I am unemployed and have been skipping days when tak-ing my high blood pressure medication due to the cost. What are my risks in doing this? S. R.

My guidance to any patient is not to skip the doses of your high blood pressure medication. notify your primary physician what you have been doing and your economic challenge. If you are tak-ing any additional medications, your physician took everything into consideration when prescribing the blood pressure medication dos-age. If you alter the intake of one medication, you are inadvertently altering others as well. Your physician may be able to prescribe a lower cost alternative, provide samples or consult with the medi-cation manufacturer on programs the pharmaceutical company (or others) may have to assist patients with financial difficulties. Thousands of deaths could be prevented every year due to medica-tion compliance so take the important step and consult with your physician today.

If you have high blood pressure, it is important to have regular eye exams because high blood pressure may cause blood vessels in your eye to bleed and your vision to become blurred. If your high blood pressure isn’t controlled, your retina’s blood vessels could be damaged. If this occurs, some patients experience headaches and vision problems but most are symptom free. When the retina is damaged, this eye disease is called hypertensive retinopathy and is most frequently diagnosed during a routine eye exam. To keep your blood pressure under control, work with your primary physician on all health and wellness issues including diet, exercise, stress manage-ment, and medication-supplement interactions.

What is high blood pressure and why is it important? G.D.

“Blood pressure” has to do with the pressure that is placed on the blood vessels of your body when your heart beats. The top number is the “systolic” blood pressure and detects pressure on the blood vessels when the heart squeezes or contracts. The bottom number is known as the “diastolic” blood pressure and reflects the pressure on the blood vessels when the heart is relaxed. The ideal range for most adults is 110-120/70-80. Blood pressure that is too high or too low can affect your health. If your blood pressure is too high on a regular basis it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and blood vessel damage. Blood pressure that is too low can indicate issues with loss of blood volume, fluid loss or other conditions. Speak to your doctor if your blood pressure is not within an ideal range.

It is true that sometimes what you don’t know can kill you, but learning about your health status and taking action can save your life! This is a key point in taking control of high blood pressure, or hypertension, which is often referred to as the “silent killer”. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) states that 45 million Americans have a condition known as prehyper-tension, or borderline high blood pressure. There are currently close to 75 million people in addi-tion who have diagnosed hypertension.

Blood pressure is the force of blood against the artery walls. If it stays elevated over a period of time, you have high blood pressure or hyper-tension. A blood pressure of 140/90 is considered high. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 139/89 then you are said to have prehyperten-sion. This means you are at risk for developing high blood pressure.

Everyone should be concerned about their blood pressure. Those who do not have it by age 55 still have a 90% chance of developing it during their lifetime. Hypertension makes your heart work harder, increases your risk for heart disease, dementia and kidney disease. High blood pressure is often found along with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.

To help lower blood pressure, one of the most important things that you can do is to follow a low sodium diet (limit sodium intake to less than 1500 milligrams per day). Sodium chloride or table salt is approximately 40% sodium. Understand just how much sodium is in salt so you can take measures to control your intake.

1/4 teaspoon salt = 600 mg sodium1/2 teaspoon salt = 1,200 mg sodium3/4 teaspoon salt = 1,800 mg sodium1 teaspoon salt = 2,300 mg sodium

Be sure to read labels on all canned and pack-aged foods for serving sizes and sodium content. Many restaurants, including fast food establish-ments are now also listing sodium content of their menu items for reference. You may be surprised at how much sodium you are consuming each day!

Additionally, use whole grain breads, cereals, pasta and brown rice; choose lean cuts of meat and poultry, fish, fresh fruits, nonfat dairy prod-ucts, nuts and vegetables. This type of diet is high in potassium, calcium, magnesium, protein and

fiber. Limiting saturated fats, high fat red meats, sweets and sugared bever-ages is also part of what is known as the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Many who have hypertension often also have dia-betes and/or high cholesterol levels. Stopping smoking is essential to blood pressure control.

Consult with a registered dietitian for reliable and accurate nutrition advice to coordinate medical nutrition therapy recommendations. It is also important to exercise, maintain a healthful weight and limit alcohol, along with taking medications as prescribed by your doctor.
