In my position, I have the good fortune of work-ing with a lot of wonderful people. I also hear about a lot of wonderful things that happen in our commu-nity. I have one particularly heartwarming story to share with you that happened a few months back, but at the request of the person involved, we’ve kept it out of the newspaper until now. The person is now ready to allow us to print the story, but prefers to remain anony-mous. Read this month’s cover story “A Heartfelt Thanks to 4SRLL and the 4S Ranch Community” if you want to feel warm and fuzzy all over. This story truly embraces the meaning of Thanksgiving.

Be sure to read about the “1st Annual Thanksgiving Day Thank You 5K Trail Run/Walk” – go for a run, eat lots for dinner and feel good about donating to two excellent causes. Another good Thanksgiving story comes from the Rahim family who are deeply grateful to everyone who helped find their missing son.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’d like to thank all of those people out there that are always at the forefront of helping others in need. They take it on as a personal quest to make life better for someone else and they

don’t stop until they are completely satisfied with the outcome. “No” is not in their vocabulary. It’s always the same with these “givers”. They are humble and refuse to accept any recognition or praise, but are the first to heed a cry for help. And, it doesn’t just stop at heeding…it

evolves into giant fundraisers or huge donations.

This time around, I would like to call out someone who consistently goes above and beyond. He hears about some-one’s plight, quietly spreads the word, and before you know it, his influence has dramatically changed the lives of families desperate for help. Thanks to

Chris Jensen, President of 4SRLL and part-time saint. We truly appreciate all your endeavors of goodness. Your calls to action make us all better people.

I hope that whether you are feeling hugely thank-ful or minimally thankful, you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I’m sure you are all bound for widely diverse destinations and I would love for you to take photos of your Thanksgiving holiday and send them to me ([email protected]) to share in a future issue. Until then, thank you for all you do to make this community a special place.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Debi renken

4s ranch

on your doorstep

a heartfelt thanks to 4srll and the 4s ranch community

this story should not only make us feel proud to live in such a benevolent community, but make us take a moment to truly appreciate all that we have.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude and appreciation to all of the amazing people that have stepped up to basically save my life, and the well being of my family.

My grandma used to say, “Your health is your wealth.” Silly me, I thought my monthly bonus, or annual pay increase, was the door to financial security. However, after having been through everything I have, I see Grandma was 100% correct. One minute you are okay and in the blink of an eye, your whole planet can change with one hospitalization. I was broken and depressed, and soon found myself homeless. Scared and lonely, I wondered how much my sons could go through before it was too late to try to protect them and their innocence.

Suddenly, I remembered Coaches Mark and Paula V. from 4S Ranch Little League, and how much they helped to distract us from our troubles through the joy of baseball last spring. My son loved playing for Mark and Paula. They are truly amazing people who brought normalcy to our lives at a very difficult time. Thank you Mark & Paula! (Don’t tell them I said so, but I think they should coach all of our kids!)

Knowing that 4S Ranch Little League Fall Ball was coming soon, I went to meet with the league president, Chris Jensen, to see if I could qualify for financial aid. 4S Ranch Little League graciously offered a full scholarship for my son to play Fall Ball, and from that very moment forward my life has forever changed.

Chris (now referred to by my family as “our angel”) sent an email to me to get some more information (well…to get a lot of information) about my family and our situation. Unbeknownst to me, he then sent out an email to the Little League and 4S Community seeking help.

The next thing I know, Chris told me that one of the Little League families was offering us a two-bedroom condo (for free!) and that we can stay for 6 months so we can enjoy the holidays in a safe and beautiful place. I could not believe that people I had never even met, and that knew nothing about us (other than that we needed help), were willing to open up their home out of the kindness of their hearts. Chris also informed me that several other families offered up guest homes and/or rooms in their homes for us to stay in. Thank you to Travis Downs and his beautiful wife Sheila for putting a roof over our heads, and thank you to all the kind souls who offered us shelter as well. I’m overwhelmed!

A few days later, we were able to move into the condo. It was our first “home”

since April 2010. We were so grateful to be moving in, but had nothing other than some essentials. Humiliating as it is to say, I had sold everything I owned (except my vehicle) in order to buy food, gas and medicine.

Shortly after moving in, Chris told me that a father of a boy on my son’s Fall Ball team learned about our situation and offered to help out. The next day, I learned that the dad was Lee Goodman, the President and CEO of Jerome’s Furniture, and that Jerome’s offered to furnish our new home. The following day, a Jerome’s Furniture truck delivered beds, box springs, mattresses, a dining room table and chairs, dressers and even a coffee table! The furniture is beautiful!

As I mentioned, Mr. Goodman’s son is on our Fall Ball team, and I had the pleasure of meeting him after receiving this amazing gift. I can tell that this man is committed to his sons, and could relate to the pain I felt for my own boys. Lee, thank you so much! I’m a big girl, and the floor I used to sleep on was beginning to really hurt. My bed brings me such happiness that anyone who comes over is immediately invited to try it out to see how com-fortable it is! I would also like to say a special “Thank You” to John and Tanya Penn who provided us with brand new pillows, linens and comforters for our new beds. John and Tanya, thank you

for making us so comfortable!Little by little, Chris kept delivering items that were donated by mem-

bers of the 4S Ranch Community. Most of the stuff, I have no idea where it even came from. We received towels, pots and pans, utensils, glasses, coffee maker, clothes, baseball equipment, couch, gift cards to stores and restau-rants. Thank you to everyone!

There is a mommy out there that took the time to get the school sup-ply list, and figure out what my son needed for the first day of school. She purchased it all, and packed it up in a new backpack so my son could start school feeling prepared and excited, just like all the other boys and girls. Mom to Mom (oh boy, crying again…), whoever you are, God bless you!

My boy received a baseball equipment bag, helmet, bat, pants and two pairs of baseball cleats. We also received a Sports Authority gift card, which is how I was able to purchase some of the other baseball necessities.

A few months ago, the 4SRLL Board received an email in response to the Fall Ball Registration flyer. The email was from a woman who inquired if the board would consider a scholarship for her 7 year old son who played in the 4S League last Spring. She indicated that one of her son’s only outlets was baseball and she wanted to keep him focused on that, rather than the difficult circumstances they were going through. League President Chris Jensen recognized the name and responded to her that the League would cover her registration fees and that she should look for him at the registration table to take care of the paperwork.

From that point forward this woman’s life took a turn for the best. She had lost everything and suffered hardships that most of us only read

about in newspapers. One thing was sure, she and her two small sons deserved a few good tidings.

Once Chris Jensen learned the depth of this woman’s desperate situ-ation, he turned to the 4SRLL as well as the 4S Ranch community to ask for help. Everyone came together for an amazing display of goodness, caring and generosity.

Although this woman prefers to remain anonymous, she does want everyone to know the extent of her appreciation, gratitude and thankful-ness. Below is her letter of heartfelt thanks...

Okay, it’s a mouthful, but the 1st Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K “Thank You” Trail Run/Walk is coming your way whether you can say it or not. The run will begin at 8 am at the corner of Dove Creek Rd. and Cross Stone Place on November 25, 2010. Yes, that’s right; it’s on Thanksgiving Day. This means you can run/walk and not feel guilty about that Thanksgiving meal you are about to devour! Also you’ll be supporting two very worthy causes – helping victims of ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and the 4S~Del Sur Foundation which strives to provide monetary grants for the needs of the local community.

The race will travel E/B on Dove Creek Rd. S/B on Dove Canyon and then on to Carmel Valley Rd. before entering the incredible HOA trail system. The run winds down and around the beautiful trails behind the

Knowing how much my son loves baseball, Chris reached out to Ron Witmeyer and Joe McAtee, the owners of Frozen Ropes Baseball Training in 4S Ranch. When Ron and Joe heard about our story, they blew us away by donating an Academy Membership, which allows my 7-year-old virtu-ally unlimited access to their professional instruction and classes. Without a male role model in his life, Ron and Joe are providing much needed sup-port for my son’s future development. The whole team at Frozen Ropes is very professional and knowledgeable in their baseball teaching, but even more importantly, they have a passion and love for the sport that translates through their amazing staff directly to our kids. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Even some of the folks at my son’s elementary school found out through Chris what was going on in our lives. Dr. Newman, our principal at Monterey Ridge Elementary, called to offer his assistance. We received a cash donation from Mrs. Kane, and several anonymous folks provided school clothes and under garments for my baby. Mrs. Haft has been an emotional cheerleader, and Mrs. De Los Santos is working her magic in the classroom. Thanks guys!

I don’t know the names of the people who provided restaurant gift cards, grocery gift cards, cash, and all of the other items we received, but someone greater than I knows exactly who you are, and I pray you are blessed ten times over for your kindness. I can never thank you enough for what has transpired since that Fall Ball registration day. All I can say is one day, I will be in a better place, and in honor of all you wonderful people, I will do everything in my power to pay it forward.

All this could never have been made possible if it weren’t for Chris Jensen. Chris and Lisa have put much time and effort into saving us. Chris has been coordinating with the community, making deliveries, listening to my pain, and searching for solutions. Thank you!

I couldn’t close before giving a shout out to my son’s current Fall Ball Coach, Rich Moore. Rich, I didn’t think I could love you as much as Mark and Paula, but it’s obvious you are just as amazing and dedicated to the children of 4S Ranch as they are. My son is blessed to be on your team!

4S Ranch is an amazing place to live. Neighbors care for one another, and that’s how it should be. Please continue to be good to one another because, take it from me, you never know when you will be in need of a blessing.

May God find favor with you all, and from the very bottom of my heart, know that I am deeply moved and thankful for your generosity.

adventures Of prince Domar – a children’s story

submitteD bY 4s resiDent melissa bOtellO-perez

“I’m very excited to announce I have recently published a children’s book. It’s called the Adventures of Prince Domar and it’s a heart warming, funny and inspiring tale.

The Adventures of Prince Domar is a story about a 7 year old boy who wants to pass his math test. While he pre-pares to study for the test he discovers that he has special powers – powers that are fueled by his ability to believe in himself, work hard and think positively.

Melissa shared, “It’s been my goal/dream to publish this story and I’m so thrilled it’s become a reality. Three years ago when I first wrote the story I told Dominick (my son), ‘One day I’m going to publish the Adventures of Prince Domar, share the message and donate the proceeds to schools.’”

The book is illustrated by Ms. Laureen Pfannenstiel from Stone Ranch Elementary and she has done an amazing job at bringing the characters to life. The kids at Stone Ranch will be the first to read it as it will be avail-able at the Book Fair in November. Melissa’s goal is to share the message while raising funds for schools. The net profits from the book sale at the SRE book fair will be given back to Stone Ranch PTA.

If you’ve been looking for a positive, upbeat story for your kids, look no further. Pick up a copy at the Stone Ranch Book Fair or send a request to [email protected].

AJ Machado, 4S resident and popular Morning Show host for Star 94.1, is coming back for more. For the ninth year in a row, AJ will take up residence (eating, sleeping, etc.) on an 8’ x 10’ platform that is elevated up above the ground until he collects over 102,000 toys for AJ’s Kids! “AJ’s Kids Crane” will take place in the IKEA parking lot, starting on Friday, November 5. All donations can be made at the IKEA location, but visit AJ’s website for a possible 4S Ranch donation location.

“Despite our difficult economy, San Diegans have always shown their generosity and we’re confident that this year will be no exception,” says AJ. “Something as simple as a toy can make the fear and pain of a child’s illness or injury easier to bare. The toys we collect now will brighten the lives of thousands of children receiving treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital.”

Last year, AJ’s wife Lindsey was due with their first child while he was up in the crane! It got a bit tense, but San Diegan’s pulled together and got AJ out of that crane in record time so he could be ready for baby Kaylee’s arrival. This year, well, let’s get AJ off that crane quickly so he can go home and be with Lindsey and Kaylee. Visit www.ajmornings.com, scroll down and click on AJ’s Kids Crane for more information about making donations.

a grateful rahim family thanks their 4s neighbors

Recently the Rahim family had quite a scare when their visiting cousin and one year old son went missing while out on a walk.

Wajma had been extra busy preparing for her son’s first birthday and asked her cousin if she wouldn’t mind taking the baby for a walk while she cleaned up. Her cousin graciously accepted and took the baby out in his new Radio Flyer wagon. About a half hour later, Wajma realized that they still weren’t back. She didn’t want to make a big deal out if it, thinking they were probably out enjoying the fresh air. As time passed, she got a bad feeling in her stomach and decided to go out looking for them. But at she turned towards Pioneer Park, she noticed her son’s wagon was a couple streets before the park and it was EMPTY! Panic set in and Wajma began asking everyone she came near if they had seen her son. She then called her husband and the police. Both showed up and drove around in search of the missing pair. As the news spread neighbors from all over began coming out of their houses to help search for Wajma’s baby and cousin.

For what seemed like an eternity, everyone searched and called out their names. Suddenly, one caring person that had been driving around found the baby and Wajma’s cousin and brought them home. They had appar-ently gotten lost while out on their walk and at a certain point it was easier to carry the baby – thus the wagon got left behind. A simple explanation, but an agonizing moment in time. We all know that sinking feeling and we wouldn’t wish it on anyone!

“I’ve shared my horrible experience with you because I never antici-pated that anyone would join in to help search for my baby. When the wonderful neighbors (whom I had never met before) joined together in the search, my husband and I were blown away by the concern. We would just like to thank the 4S Ranch community from the bottom of our hearts for bringing our baby back to us. We are here for you, as you were for our family. Thank you all!”

tehyathon, inc. has grown to eleven athletes

You may recall that we have run a few stories about Tehya Foussat and her battle against Spina Bifida. Her fight has led to the creation of Tehyathon, Inc – an organization dedicated to providing sup-port to the homeless and to Spina Bifida patients and their families.

The Foussat Family at Tehyathon, Inc. is pleased to announce that they have grown from one athlete, to elev-en Tehyathon athletes that compete throughout the year to raise funds for Tehyathon.

Their one and only female athlete, Amy Larson, qualified for the 2010 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, which took place on October 9, 2010. In 2009, Amy and Andy befriended Tehya’s father, Tony, at a Masters Swim Class. During their thrice-weekly swim classes, Amy and Andy learned that Tony had a young daughter who was living with the challenges of one of the most severe forms of Spina Bifida. Once she met Tehya, they became fast friends and they continue to support and inspire each other.

If you would like more information about Tehya and Tehyathon, call 858-869-9004 or visit www.tehyathon.com.

The Foundation is pleased to welcome 11 new members as a direct result of a wonderful evening at the home of Randy and Tami Koch on September 25. The Oktoberfest and eve-ning of games was a huge suc-cess and helped to showcase the work of the Foundation.

We are proud to once again bring to the commu-nity “Divas, Designs and Desserts!” Sponsored by Sony

and Two Jinn, this event will be very similar to the event that was held last year. However, this year we’ve changed the format a bit to maximize the shopping and even more fun with girlfriends. It is guaranteed to be a great night out with friends. 100% of the proceeds from the event will go toward the Foundation’s 2011 grant making that solely supports organizations serv-ing the 4S Ranch~Del Sur communities.

We have a major date change for this event – it was previously scheduled for early December, but will now be celebrated on November 18. Divas, Design and Desserts returns to the Boys and Girls Club at 4S Ranch. Please join us for an evening of fun, shopping and fashion. For more information

The 4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation meets the emerging needs of 4S Ranch/Del Sur and the surrounding communities by encour-aging and increasing responsible and effective philanthropy by and for the benefit of all who live and give in the community.

The 4SRanch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation is part of a network of local affiliates of The San Diego Foundation, each serving the unique needs of communities throughout the region. These local affiliates have formed within the ‘Endow Your Community’ effort of The San Diego Foundation’s region-wide initiative, Endow San Diego. This multi-year initiative informs and inspires San Diegans regarding the benefit of endowment. Endowments are permanent charitable funds with the requirement that the principal is never spent. The balance of these funds is invested, earning income that is then spent to support charitable works in perpetuity.

pQ premier and f.c. san Diego sockers merge to form san Diego soccer club

PQ Premier (PQ) and FC San Diego Sockers (FCSD) recently announced that they are joining forces and will become San Diego Soccer Club (SDSC) begin-ning in the 2011 season. The merger was approved October 12 by the Board of Directors of both clubs and will continue to operate as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. The newly organized board of directors was also announced and is a blend of leaders from both organizations led by Sally Grigoriev, the new President.

The competitive side of the program will fully merge their current 74 teams. The club will be led by the current Directors of Coaching from their respective clubs. Seamus McFadden and Brian Quinn will combine to lead the boys program and Raffi Ruotolo and Peter Stogsdill will do the same for the girls. The recreational sides of both programs will remain focused on developing talent and a love for the game within their respective communities. Jim Flowers will continue to oversee the RBYSA Recreational program and Haydn Mitchell will oversee the PQ Recreational program. While the recreational programs will remain separate, they will be operating under the same banner and find many opportunities where the clubs will work together to enhance the soccer experience of players and their families.

In a time when many new smaller clubs are forming throughout San Diego, this merger is about taking two established, stronger, larger clubs with similar philosophies and putting them together with the intent of providing a more comprehensive program for soccer players of all ability levels. At the upper end, the program will provide the opportunity for players to stay near home and develop into top level players that move onto college and professional ranks. Teams will be competing at the highest levels of soccer. While on the developmental side of the program it will give players the opportunity to stay within a system designed to make the most of your ability without having to travel all over San Diego County to do so.

“We are truly thrilled about the new direction and future of the club. We are also excited about the exceptional developmental opportunities we can now offer all the young players that will benefit from the knowledge and training passed to them from Brian, Peter, Raffi and our coaching staff ”, said McFadden. “There has been encouragement to move in this direction from many members, the surrounding communities and from all levels of both organizations; we are glad we made this happen”.

The newly organized SDSC competitive club is currently working toward selecting a new logo and colors for 2011 season. For 2010 both PQ Premier and F.C. San Diego Sockers teams will continue with their current names and colors. The club will continue to offer three of the best tournaments in Southern California; “Pegasus Cup” in July 2011, “San Diego Premier Classic” in August 2011 and the upcoming “San Diego President Cup” on January 15 and 16, 2011 (www.sdpresidentscup.com).

To learn more about the newly formed San Diego Soccer Club, PQ Premier and F.C. San Diego Sockers, go to www.pqsoccer.com or www.fcsandiego.com. For additional information, you can contact a SDSC representative at [email protected].

There was lightning across

the desert sky. I was on my way to sacred ground at Miraval, near Tucson, Arizona, when a voice spoke out of the darkness. The voice, familiar and clear, told me I would have a new mission in life, and it was to inspire the living and to care for the dying. It was a shocking revelation to me; raised Roman Catholic, I was not a person given to the mysticism of our age. However, in the next 48 hours, I had experiences that changed my life forever, and ultimately touched the lives of many others.

My Soul Sitter journey began at 23 years old with the death of my father. Although he was dying of cancer before my eyes, I was in denial and never got the chance to properly say goodbye. Over the past 20 years, I subconsciously dedicated myself to become the caregiver for the aging and terminally ill family members around me, namely the maternal leaders of my life who I affectionately call my “Mother Guides”. (Ingeborg, my father’s mother, Edna, my mother-in-law, Aunt Mary, my god-mother and Grandy, my other grandmother.) In The Soul Sitter I speak can-didly about the direction I received from my Mother Guides and about everyday miracles. I share from my heart about the mystery of art and healing, and provide practical tools called The Bridge Steps that enable anyone to fearlessly share their love with the dying by creating a safe emotional space.

There is a gift of light and there is white healing available to all. It is my intention to share the secrets of these things with those who are facing the transi-tions that come to us all. In my book, I teach that death is not the end—we are in eternity now and the tragedy we call death is merely a whirlwind of light. tri n fOr chelsea – team comes together in support of chelsea king

Congratulations to Team Chelsea who as the TRI N FOR CHELSEA group competed in the US Women’s Triathlon series in Mission Bay on October 17. Over 42 women came together from all over Southern California to train for the 1/2 mile

They collectively raised close to $10,000 dollars benefitting the Chelsea’s Light Foundation (www.chelseaslight.org). When Brent King, Chelsea King’s father viewed the group picture, he commented, “world changers - one stride, one pedal, and one stroke – together -thank you.” For more information and pictures, as well as future events with the TRI N FOR CHELSEA team, please join their facebook page TRI N FOR CHELSEA.

whO are the

people in your neighborhood

Stacey and Daniel share a common interest in photography, which is what originally brought them together. Both were photographers attending profes-sional photography association meetings on a regular basis. Because you typically run into the same people at these meetings, they crossed paths quite frequently. Eventually they became friends and in 1994 Daniel hired Stacey to work at his photography studio – Visual Photography. The pair ultimately gave in to their chemistry and got married shortly thereafter. They first purchased a home in PQ where they shared custody of Daniel’s three boys, Ryan, Sean and Cory. In 2000, the family packed it up and relocated to 4S, which at the time was mostly dirt – lots of building going on! They’ve had the opportunity to watch the community grow up and at the same time watch the boys grow up. All three boys are out living on their own now, but it doesn’t stop them from visiting with Stacey and Daniel as often as possible.

Stacey is one of those highly motivated, dazzlingly energetic individu-als that makes you tired just listening to all that she does. Let’s start with Visual Photography, which she and Daniel own together. You may recognize the name - it’s one of the companies that often comes to photograph school pictures at your children’s schools. The company also does in studio photog-raphy, on location and high school senior photos. Stacey has also written a book called “The Soul Sitter” and created a website with a similar name www.

soulsitters.com. Both were born from Stacey having a difficult time saying goodbye to her father as he passed away from terminal cancer. Following his death, she learned a lot about “soul sitting” from her three “mother guides” – Ingeborg, her father’s mother, Edna, her mother-in-law, Aunt Mary, her god-moth-er and Grandy, her other grandmother. The book and website are designed to be resource centers for caregiving, courage and for helping to find a beauti-ful way to say goodbye to loved ones. (Please see the article featuring her book in the On Your Doorstep section of this issue.) “My Image Artist”, another of

Stacey and Daniel’s businesses, helps entrepreneurs and business clients find a new identity or polish up and refresh their current brand and image. You can read more about the company at www.myimageartist.com.

Stacey and Daniel work side by side on all of their endeavors, but they also have outside interests. Stacey is a huge yoga fan and Daniel plays golf as often as possible. Together they enjoy trying new restaurants, riding bikes on the boardwalk in PB, traveling and spending time with the boys. Ryan lives in Modesto and runs a golf course. Sean just happens to be the backup quarterback for Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, and Cory, who lives nearby, is working his way up the Costco corporate ladder. It’s a tight-knit family that enjoys their time together, but whether together or apart, this family sure knows how to keep busy!

This year, our goal is to raise a minimum of $45,000.Towards that goal, this school year the Foundation will be organizing or has already organized the following events. “Fore the Kids” Golf Tournament, Rummage Sale, Christmas Tree Sale, “Night at the Ranch” auction, and a 5K.

If you are interested in being a part of any of the above listed fundraising events, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected]. Our school is fortunate to be one of less than 20% of the schools in California to have the support of a foundation type organization. That said, the success of the Foundation is entirely dependent upon our volunteers.

Del sur farmers market

In addition to volunteers needed for the above listed events, the Foundation is searching for volunteers to serve on a Farmer’s Market committee, whose goal is to promote and improve the Farmer’s Market. Contact Marci Wilks at [email protected] for more information.

safety first!

Please, please put the safety of our children first. There have been a number of near incidents reported because of drivers that are driving too fast or not having the patience to wait just a few extra seconds. Whether or not you have school-age chil-dren, please be extremely cautious while driving around our local schools during drop off and pick up.

When you are dropping off or picking up your children, please don’t assume you are the only one doing so. Be courteous: don’t double park, don’t park in “no parking zones,” don’t block traffic if your child has not yet exited the school, and don’t stop in the middle of traffic to pick up your child. Let’s all work to make the drop off and pick up process a smooth one.

whooping cough/pertussis

The entire state is currently experiencing an epidemic of whooping cough cases which is the common name for pertussis. Whooping cough is a bacterial respiratory ill-

ness characterized by severe spasms of coughing that can last for several weeks or even for months. Whooping cough is

usually spread from person-to-person through close contact with respiratory droplets released when a person coughs or sneezes. Whooping cough, which gets its name from the noise children

make when they gasp for breath between violent coughs, can be deadly in infants under the age of 12 months. It is usually just an

annoying illness in older children and adults, although it can turn into bronchitis or other lung infections.

The best way to prevent the disease is with vaccination. Infants begin receiving this vaccine at two months of age. By the time children reach young adulthood, they no longer have the immunity and require a booster. A vaccine for older children and adults became available in 2005.

For the most recent local information or local immunization clin-ics, please go to the County of San Diego Public Health Department’s Immunization website at www.sdiz.org | MORE ABOUT PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough).

Marching Band and Color Guard Wins Top Award

Westview High School hosted the District’s first band tournament of the season with seven bands and color guards performing in the Westview Gold Review Field Show. The Del Norte Nighthawk Marching Band and Color Guard, in its inaugural tournament, won first place in the 1A Division. Since it was the tournament host, Westview did not compete, but rather performed exhibition.

The Westview-hosted Tournament was gov-erned by the rules of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association (SCSBOA). Under these rules, classifications range from 1A (1-50 band members) to 6A (151-up members). Bands are allowed so many minutes to perform their show with a

minimum of 7 minutes to a maximum of 11 minutes. Penalties are assessed for every 30 seconds under or over the allotted time. Parent Boosters may help stage equipment on the field, but have so many minutes to set up and depart the field before penalty points are assessed against the band. A panel of SCSBOA judges evaluates each band for presentation, use of props and equipment, playing of musical instruments, and oral presentation, among others. So, in effect, the combined skillfully coordinated efforts of the band members, directors and coaches, and volunteer band booster parents are what ultimately determines each high school band’s placement and award in the competition. The Del Norte Marching Band is directed by Jennifer Kitelinger, and assisted by Music Assistant Kenneth Serfass.

DNHS Cross Country Finishes in the Medals Once Again

Welcome to School Site Council

Welcome our School Site Council for this school year. The parents who will be helping to guide our wonderful school: Jessica Alegre, Jennifer Conlon, Elizabeth Parmley, Rajagopal Chandramohan, Nancy O’Donnell. The staff members are: Sally Brown, Patrick Keough, Carol Doremus, Christa McIntosh, and Mrs. Venolia.

IMPACT Support

Our school is pleased to announce the return of three very important programs: Everyone a Reader (1st grade), Impact (grades K through 5), and Compass Learning (before school for grades 2 through 5). Students were selected for programs that offer extra support based on proficiency on CSTs and classroom assessments from the spring of 2010 and this school year.

Students attending before-school Compass Learning or after-school Impact must have a signed permission slip to attend. We encourage you to send your children to all Impact programs they are selected for. Although Compass Learning can be accessed from home, you will find that working in the quiet and guided environment of our computer lab allows children to more closely focus. If your child will be attending a reading or math sup-port program during the school day, you should have received an information letter. All Impact programs are taught by highly-qualified, creden-tialed teachers: Alix Marx, Adrienne Tiegs, and Nadia Aboul-Hosn. Our Compass Learning and Everyone a Reader programs will be coordinated by Amy Yamaski. Mrs. Yamasaki is an exemplary employee who has been an Instructional Aide at our site for many years. Our heartfelt thanks to the Foundation for providing a Reading Specialist and the PTA for providing Compass Learning.

My physician indicated my weight has now moved into the obese range. What are my risks if i don’t lose the weight? i just don’t know if i can do it. s.s.

many diseases are linked to being over weight or obese, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis. losing as little as 5% of your body weight may lower your risk for several diseas-es. start small. slow and steady weight loss is the safest way to keep it off over time. the first activity i recommend is for you to assemble a team to assist you. this team would include your physician, a dietitian, a personal trainer and an exercise partner. if applicable, be sure to check with your health insurance to identify what expenses they may cover and ask your hr department if your employer has any weight loss-related programs. in the long run, any costs associ-ated with your team’s services will be far less than what it would cost to treat diseases that you may encounter if you don’t lose the weight.

Ask the Doctor...i don’t want to spend my life on a diet. Please remind me of some diet tips to incorporate into my daily routine. k.r.

the struggle against increasing rates of obesity continues. Diet plans, weight loss surgeries, and medications are always in the media headlines. while it seems like there is an overwhelming number of options to control weight, proven rules do exist and won’t change. an important part of managing weight is deciding when, what, and how much to eat. Different meal plans suit different people.

eating at regular times - avoid skipping meals.

Drink water, low calorie beverages.

prepare raw vegetables for when the urge to snack hits.

keep fresh fruit readily available.

regular physical activity - discuss with your doctor.

nO eating in front of screens - tv or computer.

One quarter of your plate should include starchy foods. choose whole grain breads, brown rice, pasta.

One quarter of your plate should include lean protein.

half of your plate should include vegetables - high in fiber and low in calories.

We are constantly hearing about obesity in the news. as a country, how did we let our weight get so out of hand? s.g.

generally speaking, we are eating too much and exercising too little. there are specific factors, however, that can play a role in weight gain. One of the most common is our metabolism slows down as we age, and we often don’t adjust the number of calories to maintain one’s weight. as our population ages, a greater number of women will become postmenopausal, experiencing lower metabolic rates, meaning they will burn less energy at rest. eating disorders linked with psychological factors have become more prevalent. a disorder known as binge eating can be associated with obesity. this occurs when some one eats large amounts of food and does not exercise control over how much they are eating. and, of course, environmental and lifestyle factors have changed over time promot-ing unhealthy diets/meal choices and sedentary activities.

business spotlight

As a child, Dr. Sasha Bhor was some-what of a math whiz. She lived in a fam-ily of engineers and was fully expected to blossom into an engineer herself. But, Sasha had other plans. She loved the sciences and very much wanted to do something that involved reaching out to people. Dentistry fit the bill; it definitely

covered all the biological sciences – physics, chemistry and biology – and it certainly involved taking care of others. She pursued her dream and has been a practicing dentist for over 12 years.

Dr. Bhor started her career in India, but moved to California in 1999 when she moved to the US to be with her husband. After she passed all her Dental Boards with flying colors, she began working with Dental Groups as an employee. While this is typical for most new dentists, it confirmed her need to move out on her own. She grew tired of cookie cutter dentistry where you were obligated to see a certain number of patients every day. There was no personal touch, no treating the patients on your terms and certainly no time to build relationships. After her son was born, it inspired her even further to search for the perfect dental office location.

Dr. Bhor has made sure that the actual environment in which you receive your treatment follows suit with the name - Oasis Smiles. It’s a very warm, inviting office with an earthy, natural feeling. It’s also very kid-friendly. In fact, kids love them! Most importantly, she has stocked the office with

Oasis smiles

the latest state of the art technology like digital x-rays, intraoral camera for superior diagnosis, computer controlled anesthesia and much more.

But, everyone knows that no matter how amazing a dentist’s office may be, you won’t be happy there unless you like the dentist. Dr. Bhor is a soft spoken, gentle soul with a strong desire to give you the utmost personalized care. She feels that every single person who walks into her office is a unique individual who deserves to be treated according to their individual needs. Dr. Bhor also emphasizes continuing education for both herself and her staff. Her top-notch, compassionate team is quite in tune with the overall personalized care philosophy of the office.

Oasis Smiles offers a wide range of affordable general and cosmetic treatments, including exams, cleaning, crowns, extractions, partial dentures, and much more. They accept almost all insurances and are offering several new patient specials: $1000 gift certificate towards Invisalign Braces (clear braces); $100 gift card towards your co-pay for insured patients; $39 Cash Only Special – pay with cash and receive a complete exam, including x-rays and cleaning for just $39 (in the absence of oral gum disease and other exist-ing conditions).

If you have been putting off visiting the dentist or you are ready for a change, stop by to visit Dr. Bhor. The office is located at 11611 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 103, off the Rancho Bernardo Exit and I-15, next to Love Boat Sushi and Starbucks. You can also make an appointment by call-ing 858-592-2396. Your oasis smile awaits!
