More Than Just Football

Football may be synonymous with hard hits and rough play, but the Del

norte nighthawks Youth Football teams are redefining this full contact

sport into a family-friendly, community-building activity. While you

may not have heard about the nighthawks Football and Cheer, this

young league is looking to make its mark in

4S Ranch, one family at a time.

How does good health grow in your community? Do you and your neighbors plant the seeds by taking steps to keep your families healthy? Does it sprout and start to blossom when you quit smoking or walk a mile? “Growing health” can include all of these things. At Kaiser Permanente, we’re committed to helping North County cultivate better health every day.

That’s why we’re excited to announce the opening of our new Rancho Bernardo Medical Offices. Here’s our new address:

Kaiser Permanente Rancho Bernardo Medical Offices Excel Centre 17140 Bernardo Center Drive San Diego, CA 92128

The new, state-of-the-art facility will offer primary care (now including pediatrics), radiology, and pharmacy services. We’re also adding an obstetrics/gynecology department. That means you’ll be able to receive a wide range of high-quality care for you and your family—all at this same convenient location.

Combined with our existing facilities in North County, the new Rancho Bernardo Medical Offices will help us grow good health throughout the community.

For more information about our services, or to learn about becoming a Kaiser Permanente member, go to kp.org or call 1-800-464-4000. For TTY service for the deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired, call 1-800-777-1370.

Merry Christmas, Buon Natale, Feliz Navidad, Shinnen Omedeto, Kala Christouyenna, Joyeux Noel, Kung His Hsin Nien bing Chu Shen Tan and the list goes on. Hope you all have your running shoes tied tight and cars tuned up and ready to roll because, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Christmas season is upon us!

During the month of December, we not only hear about Christmas, but also about Hanukkah and Kwananzaa as well. Ever wonder what all this really means? Here is a brief explanation about each celebration to help sort things out a bit.

Hanukkah is observed by millions of Jews around the globe. It commemorates the victory of faith over tyranny. Although Hanukkah is technically a minor Jewish festival, it is a holiday for which Jews exchange gifts. It also is celebrated in the Jewish month of Kislev, which usually falls in December. This combination has resulted in the misperception that Hanukkah is “the Jewish Christmas.” In fact, this festival has a rich tradition and history of its own.

Kwanzaa “Kwanzaa Yenu Iwe Na Heri!” is a festive, non-religious celebration founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, during which African Americans celebrate and reflect upon their rich heritage. It begins December 26 and lasts for seven days. Each day focuses on one of

seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative, economics, purpose, cre-ativity and faith.

Christmas is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. It is unknown whether this day is Jesus’ actual date of birth. The date of celebration may have been chosen to corre-spond with either a Roman festival or the winter solstice.

The season is loaded with tradition, both old and new, but the truth is that all of the customs of Christmas pre-date the birth of Jesus Christ. If you were to study this more closely, you would find that Christmas in our day is a collection of traditions and practices taken from many cultures and nations.

Each of us has our own way of celebrating the season, but my question to you is this -– why are we suddenly overcome with warm-heartedness? I think it’s because, despite our best intentions, good will towards men has become a seasonal event rather than a standing policy. So, Ho! Ho! Ho! your way to the mall, buy your gifts and cards and ribbons and bows, but this year, don’t put the tidings of joy back on the shelf with the other Christmas decora-tions. Carry the benevolence as far into the New Year as possible.

Happy Holidays - see you on the flip side!

4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation news

The end of the year became a busy season for the 4S Ranch / Del Sur Community Foundation! Two milestone events have touched the com-munity.

To begin with, because of our long standing relationship with Sony and their generosity, we were able to donate 3 Sony VAIO laptop computers to the Del Norte High School PTA, ASB and Sports programs. This gift was to help raise funds for our new high school and its many programs and activities.

In addition, we launched our inaugural event, Divas Designs and Desserts, that we hope becomes a community tradition. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will open their doors on December 2 from 6 to 10 pm so participants can do some early holiday shopping, enjoy a fashion show, guest speaker and amazing desserts. Contact [email protected] for reservations!

The Foundation thanks the following for hosting and sponsoring the event: Savvy Interiors, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Two Jinn Incorporated, Sony Corporation, Gaslamp Media.

The Foundation is grateful for the participation of the follow-ing Foundation members who made the event such a success: Civil Disobedience, Cold Stone Creamery Rancho Bernardo, Diane Jones – Take Shape for Life, Cute Cakes-Jill Reilly.

The Foundation would also like to thank the following businesses for helping bring in the holidays with unique and fun gifts: Leticia Gomez – Silpada, NuSkin, TRE, Zoko, Tres Chic Boutique, Meltology, Rancho Bernardo Eyewear, Designs by Gina, Kopy Kats, Moda by Sofi, Toy Depot, Three Dog Bakery, Style Solutions, Salon Europa, Bux Back.

It was shortly after the birth of their daughter Audrey on November 28, 2008 that Jan and Ferd Marquez started to notice major signs of developmental regression from their then 3 year old son, Gavin. Now 4 years old, Gavin has been through a great deal of meticulous neurological testing to find what was causing the regression. On March 2 of this year, Jan and Ferd were finally handed a diagnosis. It wasn’t good. Gavin has been diagnosed with a rare, degenerative disease called Tay Sachs Disease. The worst part is that there is no known cure. Currently, Gavin is the only known case of Tay-Sachs disease in San Diego, California.

Tay-Sachs is a rare hereditary dis-ease caused by a genetic mutation that leaves the body unable to produce an enzyme (known as Hex-A) necessary for fat metabolism in nerve cells. Without this enzyme, central nervous system degenera-tion ensues.

Gavin can do longer do many routine life skills unassisted and his fine motor skills continue to weaken on a daily basis.

Jan and Ferd persistently pray and hold onto the belief that a cure is nearby. You can help the Marquez family, especially Gavin, by visiting his very special website (www.hopeforgavin.com) to learn more about his story, the disease, and how you can help.

Gavin is a delightful little boy who really needs your help. Please take the time to visit his website at www.hopeforgavin.com. Add the website to your favorites and follow his journey. His parents believe that with the well wishes and prayers of family, friends and our wonderful community, Gavin has hope.

AJ of AJ’s kids Crane is 4S Ranch Resident

Many of you are probably aware of AJ Machado’s (94.1 radio host) successful undertaking to col-lect 101,000+ toys for kids at Rady’s Children’s Hospital, but are you aware of the fact that he is a 4S Ranch resident! AJ goes up into his crane about the same time every year, but this time the mission was a bit more challenging. As AJ climbed into his crane on day one, his thoughts were hopeful for the children at Rady’s, but he had other more pressing issues on his mind – his wife Lindsey was 35 weeks pregnant!

You see the obvious dilemma, of course. AJ had pledged to remain in the crane, day and night, until the 101,000+ toys were collected, but how could he possibly stay in the crane if he got “the call” from Lindsey. Fortunately for all concerned, baby Machado waited patiently for all the toys to be collected. Thanks AJ for your remark-able dedication and noble efforts to help others and congrats to both of you for the new addition to your family.

Try new Tastes At The Village

Our little 4S Ranch Village strip center has two wonderful new restau-rants to try. Not only is the food fabulous, but the ambiance and customer service is excellent.

Three’s a charm for the Kou Sushi Restaurant. As the third tenant to occupy the corner location, they are the ones who got it right. They took over ownership in June of this year and have not had a grand opening as yet, but will soon. Although sushi is hardly hometown cooking, it defi-nitely has a hometown feel. They are extremely flexible with their menu and will pretty much make any sushi roll you have a taste for.

Don’t despair you non-sushi lovers; they also specialize in wonderful cooked meals from teriyaki chicken to beef to salmon to mackerel. In addi-tion, they offer a few Korean dishes and daily specials. Led by the manager, Jay, the staff at Kou Sushi will treat you like royalty. Kou Sushi is open 7 days a week so stop by anytime and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. If you prefer take out, call 858-385-1628 to place your order.

Bienvenue Bistro Lili! This wonderful little French bistro & wine bar has so much to offer that if you have not tried it yet, you are truly missing out on a wonderful opportunity. On Saturday nights, they even feature live music while you dine! You could not ask for more mouth watering, diversity in a menu. Breakfast items such as the Croque Monsieur - hot ham and cheese grilled sandwich coated with a Béchamel Sauce will certainly start your day off with a skip. Lunch is equally satisfying; try the Bistro Chop Salad - chicken, bacon, mushroom, onion sautéed over mixed greens with melted cheddar and, topped with french fries! Dinner has a wide range of choices including more traditional faire such as Beef Stroganoff - classic preparation tossed with filet of beef, mushrooms and penne pasta. Don’t waste another minute. Drive, walk, or scooter your family over for a nice change of pace. Visit www.bistrolili.com to view the complete menu or for more information about the restaurant.

More than Just footballFootball may be synonymous with hard hits and rough play, but the

Del Norte Nighthawks youth football teams are redefining this full con-tact sport into a family-friendly, community-building activity. While you may not have heard about the Nighthawks Football and Cheer, this young league is looking to make its mark in 4S Ranch, one family at a time.

In its 4th season, the Nighthawks, formerly the 4S Falcons have focused on building character in their athletes. With teams ranging from flag (ages 5-7) to Jr Midget (ages 10-13), the Nighthawks association has divi-sions at every skill level, including cheer.

This fall, the league had some impressive achievements in their inaugural year as the Nighthawks!

The Mitey Mite blue team (team featured in the picture) went an impressive 8-0 for the regular season. Head Coach of the Mitey Mite team, Antoine McCall, emphasizes playing with passion, developing confidence, and practicing disci-pline. “The greatest reward for coaching football is watching the boys work together for one common goal and seeing them become better athletes and bet-ter young men by the seasons end,” says Coach Antoine. Along with assis-tant coaches, Chris Staal, Chad Mitten, Rob Guerrero, Daina Ponce, and Mitch Smith, Coach Antoine believes in encouraging kids to work hard, not only on the field, but also at school and with their families.

For our football teams:Flag team won their Jamboree Game. 4 out of the 6 tackle teams made

it to the playoffs: Mitey Mite blue, Jr Pee Wee, Pee Wee, and Jr Midget.

For our Cheer Squads:Mitey Mite Blue Cheer took first place at the San Diego Cheer

Competition for dance + step. Jr Midget Cheer took first place at the San Diego Cheer Competition for Cheer + Dance.

The lessons on the football field translate into positive attitudes, cama-raderie, and leadership in the community. Families are encouraged to get involved. Living in such an intimate community like 4S Ranch, you truly get to experience a sense of community. Families lean on each other for day-to-day help with picking up each other’s kids from school or sharing the holidays with families whose fathers have gone away to serve in the military.

Most of the players live in 4S Ranch, but registration is extended to many of the surrounding areas. You may visit our website for specifics and for upcoming details on Spring + Fall registration for 2010. www.night-hawksyouthfootball.com.

people in your neighborhood

The Bush family is living proof that you can own your dream home, but not be truly happy. Lew and Dee built a magnificent custom home in a gated com-munity in a faraway land called Carmel Valley. After only one year of living in the home, Dee had had enough. Although the community was beautiful, the streets were bare. No kids ever came out to play; it was quiet and lacked excitement. Their realtor suggested the RB area. Dee’s first reaction was skeptical, but she visited a few homes, found 4S Ranch and knew it was exactly what they wanted for the kids – Dani, 14, Lewis, 9 and Makai, 6.

Dee Bush is one energetic, vibrant, caring, human being. She owns a day spa in the Village at Rancho Santa Fe called Browtique. The salon spe-cializes in facials, brows and hair. Ever hear of a gal by the name of Jennifer Anniston? More than anything, her hair made her famous and her color specialist, Michael Canale, takes clients at the spa three days out of every month. How cool is that?! Visit www.browtiquespa.com for more informa-tion about the spa and all it has to offer.

Dee spends pretty much all her time at the spa, but when school gets out, she is all about being the kids’ taxi cab. On top of that, she raised her

niece for 6 years and is now looking to take on two foster kids. Lew is no slacker him-self. After 11 arduous years in the NFL, seven with the Chargers, four with the Kansas City Chiefs, he is very much a part of keeping the family on a roll, foster kids and all! Lew loves to cook, even attending culinary school and opening a restaurant called Sweet Lew’s Barbeque in Bird Rock. Due to management issues, Lew closed the restaurant when he went to Kansas City, but he still cooks. Lew is also now working with Ashford University as an enrollment

advisor. The man has a lot on his plate, but wouldn’t have it any other way. As one of the first students ever to attend, Dani LOVES Del Norte

High School. She is a straight A student and is currently on the Del Norte volleyball team. When the high school season ends, she’s going to continue playing volleyball on a club team. Lewis is in 3rd grade at Stone Ranch Elementary. He mostly enjoys basketball, but he plays soccer as well. Makai is in Kindergarten at Stone Ranch. He’s currently the youngest around the house, enjoys playing soccer and loves being outside. The family is delighted to be living in 4S Ranch - it’s the perfect blend of friends, shops, activities and schools.

Oak Valley Cross Country Makes History

On October 16, the Oak Valley Cross Country team made school history at the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational! It was a stiflingly, hot day, with tempera-tures in the low 90’s and a hill so steep your knuckles almost scraped the ground as you plowed your way up. In the four previous years that we made the trip to this famous 1.2 mile course, we only had one runner ever win a medal by placing in the top 15 of their race. This year, we had 3 medal winners and the 7th grade girls’ team won our first ever team trophy by placing 3rd out of 29 schools entered in their race. One member of the team led the charge by placing 2nd in the 7th grade girls’ race. Her finish is the best ever by a runner from Oak Valley. On the boys’ side, we had two medal winners. The fastest Oak Valley time of the day was (8:56), and resulted in respectable 11th place finish in the 7th grade boys’ race and another runner paced himself to an 8th place finish which is the highest place ever for a boy from Oak Valley.

Congratulations on an amazing day! This has been the most successful year in Oak Valley history for the Cross Country team. The future looks even better with so many 6th and 7th graders returning next year and a new crop of 6th grad-ers that will be coming in. Our numbers have grown from a small team of 10-12 runners the first couple of years to almost 75 participants this year. The team is a great way for students to make new friends, build a healthy lifestyle and compete against other runners from all over Southern California. A special thank you to the assistant coaches, Mayumi Athay and Joy DeKalb for helping to make this an unforgettable season. If you would like more information about the Cross Country team at Oak Valley, you can contact Coach Kenny at [email protected].

Del Norte Cross Country Running Strong

Congratulations to the girls cross country team for defeating both Oceanside and San Marcos last Friday. Monica Shifflet captured first place for the Nighthawks, with Sina Faizy, Natalie Shifflet, Roisin Andrews, Ashley Mitchell, and Jasleen Ghumman also finishing in the top 10. The girls are now 5 and 1 in Valley League competition heading into the final meet of the year. The boys Cross Country team also defeated Oceanside, but nar-rowly lost to San Marcos. Jared Brungard led the way by finishing in 2nd place, while Andrew Muhn, Ian Lee, and Aaron Chidester also scored top 10 finishes.

Student Dress Code Reminders

School clothing should be neat, clean, and appropriate for school activi-ties and should follow the standards of common decency. Attire should not cause a disruption to the learning environment. Also, be aware that shirts must have straps. Students are encouraged to review the dress code in the Student Handbook. The dress code will be enforced at all school-sponsored activities. Students who choose to wear inappropriate attire will be disci-plined and will be required to change into clothes that comply with the student dress code.

Greetings Del Sur Explorers!

Parents thank you for your continued support of all of our programs at Del Sur. During the previous three months, I have had the opportunity to meet with our various parent and student groups on campus – the PTA, the Elementary Foundation, our ELL committee, and student council. As we look at school-wide issues, individual committee input is always helpful as it shapes our future goals and endeavors. Thank you parents and students for being part of these committees and organizations and lending your voice to important conversations. Please stay involved throughout the year as we work together to provide an optimal education experience for the students of Del Sur Elementary. Your efforts make a daily difference. Thank you!

Special thanks to these folks: Mary Ellis for helping with Family Movie Night, Paula Graubart for chairing Reflections, the Halloween Parade Crew for stage decorations, Dad’s Club for pumpkin painting, and Room Parents for decorating doors for Red Ribbon Week.

We have much to be thankful for, especially in regard to our outstanding students who come to school every day ready to learn and grow.

See you on campus, Doug Johnson

A Notable Red Ribbon Week

The objective of teaching kids the importance of leading a healthy, drug-free lifestyle was met through a variety of activities including daily theme days, an energetic Zumba exercise class, karate and sports demos, a healthy snack-making demo, and more! The grand finale assembly included an encore performance from the USD Toreros Dance Team, a fun but educational “RAD Kids” safety class, and a Helicopter Landing by the US Navy!

Safeguard Your Home Th is SeasonWhile home safety is a year-round concern, it’s especially critical dur-

ing the holidays. Focusing on home protection, both inside and out, is an important part of preparing for a happy and healthy holiday season. “Home safety should be top-of-mind for all homeowners,” said Bill Griffin of Griffin Ace Hardware in 4S Ranch/Rancho Bernardo. “We take great pride in helping our customers make their homes as safe as possible for their families.” The following tips will help protect the people inside your home during the holidays:

security systemA proper security system is the first step toward maintaining a safe

home during the holidays since many people are traveling this time of year. Indoor and outdoor lighting should be set up with timers that turn lights on and off to create the appearance of an occupied home.

follow lighting Manufacturer instructionsOne of the most simple and important steps you can take to safeguard

your family is to take time to read the manufacturer instructions on light sets. “You can combine up to six strings of lights with some brands, but only two with others,” Griffin added. “It can be a major fire hazard to overload your lights.” Also, make sure not to overload extension cords and select the right type of cord for the correct use – exterior cords for outdoors and indoor extension cords for inside the house.

install smoke and carbon Monoxide detectorsAccording to the U.S. Fire Administration, fires will injure approxi-

mately 2,600 people during the holiday season, and cause close to $930 mil-lion in damage. These two inexpensive devices save lives, especially with the risks associated with festive lights and candles lit for long periods of time. “Every floor of your home should be equipped with one smoke detector and

one carbon monoxide detector, or a combo unit,” says Griffin. “This is espe-cially important near bedrooms, and well within earshot.” The rule of thumb is to change the batteries when you change your clocks, twice per year. The average cost is between $25-$50 – a small price to pay for peace of mind.

safeguard your fireplaceYour fireplace is the perfect centerpiece where you can entertain guests

and keep warm. Without proper maintenance and cleaning, however, fireplaces turn into safety hazards. Call a professional to inspect and clean your chimney once a year. You can also keep birds and other small animals out of the chimney by installing a chimney cap.

additional safety fixesEnsure your area rugs have anti-skid tape or padding to keep them sure-

footed, and always have a strong step stool on hand to reach items or seasonal decorations that are too high to reach in closets, cabinets or storage units.

By following these easy safety tips this holiday season, you can rest assured you’ll have a safe and pleasant holiday. If you have additional questions, stop by to ask one of the helpful associates at Griffin Ace Hardware located in the 4S Commons Town Center, 10511 4S Commons Drive or may be reached by calling 858-385-1801. My family isn’t active enough! how can i incorporate physi-

cal activities into our family holiday plans?

Family traditions can give everyone something to look forward to. When we think of these traditions, let’s think of establishing activities that are physical vs. sedentary! So, instead of watching a traditional movie on Thanksgiving, consider going for a hike in the morning or afternoon. When choosing your Christmas tree, make it a family out-ing vs. just making it a quick errand. Football games on the TV are certainly popular, but what about including an annual game in your own backyard or in a neighborhood park. Plan some annual day trips together, too -- ski in our SoCal mountains, go to the desert dunes, walk on the beach, rent a boat (paddle boat or row boat), or take a hike in our area parks.

Cheryl Shanmugam, MD, Pediatrics, Centre For Health Care, www.pph.org

i don’t have family nearby and can’t afford a plane ticket

home. What can i do to make the holidays more enjoyable?

When feeling apprehensive about the holidays, i often feel better when i take the focus off myself. Consider making new traditions! Practice random acts of kindness with your friends and co-workers. Volunteer in your community. Play Secret Santa with a distant rela-tive so you can still be involved with your family even though you are not physically able to be present. Plan a couple small get togeth-ers with friends -- keep informal and intimate to avoid stressful planning. And, use the extra “holiday” hours during this time of the year to take extra good care of yourself -- get plenty of sleep, eat as healthfully as you can, build in some leisure time to do something that will de-stress you, and step outside for fresh air and easy to moderate exercise.

Michelle Washington, FnP-C, internal Medicine, Centre for Health Care,

www.pph.org

how do i stay healthy and avoid weight gain while main-

taining my holiday family traditions? J.g.

This time of year, holiday traditions are commonly revisited. one of my favorite traditions is getting together with friends and family. unfortunately, this sometimes results in unwanted weight gain from over-indulging in food and alcohol. This season, try to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables before sitting down to the holiday meal. Drink plenty of water before eating to have a feeling of fullness. Additionally, use diet or club soda for wine spritzers if you do indulge in alcohol. Finally, if you don’t already get plenty of exercise, make a new tradition of hiking in the beautiful mountains around San Diego or take a trip to the Zoo or Wild Animal Park to walk off those extra calories. Maintaining the holiday traditions does not always have result in “the Holiday 10” (pounds that is)! until next time, have a wonderful and health holiday season.

business spotlight

One of the first things to get slashed from the family budget during tough economic times is eating out. Luann McCleery is trying to change all that. Luann has an impressive advertising background which provided her the inspiration to create and market a “dining card” to 8 different markets back in the 1990’s when she lived in Oklahoma and Texas. Basically, the card allowed consumers to frequent restaurants at a discount – buy one get one free up to the max value. The card was enormously successful.

Three and a half years ago, Luann moved from Salt Lake City to San Diego where she married her husband, Brad. It took a few years for her to adjust to the new surroundings, but she has adapted quite well. With the help of her husband, daughter, Nauni, and son-in-law, Eric, Luann is ready to introduce her unique card to this area. Suitably named “Epicurious San Diego” (Epicurious is the Greek word for healthy foods and curious to find new restaurants) the card is currently exclusive to the Rancho Bernardo area. She has had plenty of time to “tweak” the card so that both consumer and restaurateur get the max amount of benefit. She has made the card conve-

nient for people to carry in either their purses or their pockets and has care-fully selected a range of local restaurants from casual to fine dining. Even though we know you are constantly hurrying to get the kids from school to soccer to dance to baseball, you won’t find any fast food eateries on the card at this time. Don’t worry there are plenty of places to take the kids, but there are also brilliant opportunities to go out without the kids and enjoy a wonderful meal for half what you would normally spend!

The current card features the following restaurants:

Bernard’O RestaurantCafé Luna RestaurantOggi’s Pizza and Brewing Co.Nugents firegrill On The Border Mexican GrillCafé Merlot At the Bernardo Winery

Each restaurant has a buy 1 get the 2nd one free offer, up to a maxi-mum value. No worries if you are dining solo, you can get 50% off the max value. You are allowed to frequent each restaurant on the card 6 times each. The premise, of course, is that you will enjoy the restaurants you visit, create a dining habit, and continue visiting the restaurant even after the card has expired. You find new yummy places to eat and the restaurants get regular customers. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned.

The value here is exceptional. You get 72 squares (meals) totaled at $990 for a mere $38! Yes, the card costs only $38! The card is valid from November 9, 2009 to August 15, 2010. The sooner you purchase a card, the more time you will have to use it. The card not only enhances your dining out abilities, but it’s a wonderful holiday gift! Epicurious San Diego is also a terrific fundraising idea.

Mastermind Luann would love to answer any questions you may have about the card itself or about fundraisers. You’ll find her ad on page 12 of this issue for more detail. Visit www.epicurioussandiego.com or call her at 858-449-9640. Don’t wait, go out to eat!
