On behalf of the ADA and its Local Organising Committee, it is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend and enjoy the 37th Australian Dental Congress in Melbourne.

Located at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on the banks of the Yarra the venue is close to many hotels and provides easy access to the Main Scientific and Parallel Programmes, the venues for social activities, and the exhibition.

Over three and a half days, highly acclaimed International and Australian speakers supported by contemporary research, will cover a wide range of subjects. Spread across three main streams delegates will enjoy comfortable theatre style venues immediately adjacent to each other and the comprehensive industry exhibition. From the more traditional elements of dentistry to the cutting edge of modern clinical practice there will be a smorgasbord of information and techniques to both stimulate your curiosity and take back to the practice and apply after Congress.

Four keynote speakers from the UK, Canada and the USA will headline the programme. Dr John Besford is from the UK and has a distinguished career in a referral practice limited to removable and implant prosthodontics and teaching of the same. Dr Andrew Dawood, also from the UK is a specialist in Periodontics and Prosthodontics and has a special interest in 3D technologies. Prof Anil Kishen is Professor of Endodontics at University of Toronto with interests in nanomaterials and phototherapeutic research for endodontic applications. Dr Ken Malament is a renowned American prosthodontist, a clinician, teacher and prolific contributor to prosthodontic literature.

For those seeking a more “hands on” approach to their experience, an array of Workshops will be presented prior to the commencement of the Main Scientific Programme. The ever popular Lunch and Learn sessions will once again feature as an additional opportunity for a more intimate occasion to gather further insights.

A new initiative complementing parallel programmes for specific dental staff and associated dental practitioners, are innovative whole of practice sessions that enable the dental team to attend the Congress together.

The 37th Australian Dental Congress falls early in the current three year Continuing Professional Development cycle set by the Dental Board of Australia. It is a great opportunity for delegates to achieve the first year’s requirements in one event, carefully curated to provide you with quality, evidence-based education.

In conjunction with the Main Scientific Programme the substantial exhibition will have a comprehensive range of exhibitors displaying the latest in equipment, materials, and services. The ADA stand will feature in the centre of the exhibition. Take the time to come and say hello to the dedicated people who spend their time looking after your interests. Share your views on dentistry, share your concerns, or find out about the ADA resources available to you to help in your dental life. An Employment Fair will be held adjacent to the Main Scientific Programme venues to connect recent graduates seeking employment with a vast selection of potential employers.

Networking and catching up with friends and colleagues is a vital part of the Congress experience. The Welcome Reception will provide a relaxed friendly environment ideal for making new contacts or renewing old friendships. The tempo speeds up a notch for the Congress late night, themed on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) – a night full of music, colour and fun, accompanied by great food, wine and the sounds of Mariachi. Throughout the Congress, accompanying persons will enjoy a social get together, dedicated lounge, and concierge service to facilitate activities. Melbourne’s vibrant laneway and entertainment precincts and many acclaimed restaurants are all within easy walking distance.

We look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne to enjoy all that Congress has to offer.

WorkshopsThese popular full and half-day workshops, which take place prior to Congress on Wednesday 17th May, are geared to a more practical, hands-on approach that allows delegates to not only find about new treatments but to apply them as they learn.Usually taking place in a clinical setting, these workshops will be held at a variety of locations across Melbourne including the Convention Centre, the Melbourne Dental School, The Dental Solution and MOHTEC.

Workshops are only available to Dentists who have registered for Congress with registration numbers strictly limited at each workshop. All programme information is subject to change.

This is your chance to bring your learning to life in a collegial setting with a presenter ready to assist with any questions you may have. Below is just a snapshot of the workshop information, for full details please visit www.adcmelbourne2017.com.

Wednesday 17th

Soft tissue management for creating a framework for the perfect smilePresented by Dr Michael Danesh-MeyerMelbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the clinical applications of diode laser technology through scientific and practical perspectives. This program will review soft tissue management for the perfect smile including the steps required to achieve ideal soft tissue aesthetics. Various topics will be discussed including managing patients with varying soft tissue biotype, the relationship of tooth morphology and soft tissue, restorative requirements and surgical procedures will be described in detail.

Skulpting skool 102 – Direct anteriors using Grandio SO: A simplified approachPresented by Dr Clarence Tam and Mr Gregor ConnellThe Dental Solution Morning: 8.00am to 12.00pm | Afternoon: 1.00pm to 5.00pm

The modern management and conservative treatment of dental traumatic injuries is a skill underpinned by the clinician's knowledge and skill at placing well-sealed, biomimetic, invisible resin restorations. The concept of responsible esthetics is echoed in this course through a review of preparation design through to occlusal control for long-lasting performance. The course will progress from restoration of a Class IV using a stratified approach with VOCO Grandio SO through to the placement of composite veneers with limited maverick effects in the afternoon. There will be an opportunity for delegates to learn how to mask a dark tooth during the course of placing a composite veneer.

The anterior aesthetic restoration using the “controlled layer concept” with composites: A system for simplification and predictabilityPresented by Dr Anthony MakMelbourne Convention and Exhibition CentreMorning: 8.00am to 12.00pm | Afternoon: 1.00pm to 5.00pm

This direct composite workshop aims to develop the understanding of using different colours and opacities in the anterior composite aesthetic restorations. With the composites available to us today, using different opacities to mimic the natural anatomy of the dentition is crucial in the application of the layering technique. The "Controlled Layering Concept" is a technique where we can simplify and systemise this process while ensuring the final result is predictable and harmonious with the rest of the natural anatomy.

Adopting new digital technologies in practice

Presented by Dr Phillip TanMelbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

This exclusive one day intensive training program will provide a practical insight into the most current digital techniques supporting the full end-to-end workflow including intra-oral scanning, computer aided restoration design, digital implant treatment planning and restoration manufacturing.

Simplicity in the restoration of vital and non-vital teeth: workflows, protocols, new materials and techniques

Presented by Prof Simone GrandiniThe Melbourne Dental School8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Adhesive technologies have contributed to changing the way dentists conceive restorations in dentistry. Due to the improvements of materials and techniques, it is now possible to perform minimal preparations and to restore aesthetic appeal and function with a low biological and financial cost. Reparability of resin composites is also highly appreciated as this allows restorations to be easily redone should the result not be perfect in the first stage.

Review of relative analgesia – The forgotten art and treatment options

Presented by Dr Greg Mahoney, Dr Angelo Preketes, Dr Robert Turnbull and Dr Michael WalkerMelbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre8:30am – 5:00pm

This hands-on workshop for dentists will comprise lectures in the morning session with the afternoon being a ‘hands-on’ interactive experience where participants will be given the opportunity to administer nitrous oxide – oxygen sedation on each other and to experience for themselves the effects of relative analgesia (RA) in a safe environment. This workshop meets the standards of the International Federation of Dental Anaesthesiology Societies. The objective of the workshop is to enable participants to become proficient and confident in the administration of RA in clinical practice. It is also an excellent refresher for dentists wishing to update their theory and practical skills in the delivery of RA.

Fibre reinforced composite resin bridges. A cost effective, aesthetic and conservative option

Presented by Prof Ian MeyersMelbourne Convention and Exhibition CentreMorning: 8.00am to 12.00pm | Afternoon: 1.00pm to 5.00pm

This workshop will provide clinical information and a ‘hands-on’ experience with resin impregnated fibre reinforcing materials combined with a range of aesthetic and high strength composite resins. Techniques for creating aesthetic anterior and fully functional posterior fibre reinforced bridges will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will be able to experience using the various fibre reinforced materials and will undertake construction of direct and semi-direct bridges. ADA/PFA National Emerging Young Lecturer AwardEstablished in 1936 by American dentist Dr. Elmer S. Best and named after the acknowledged father of modern dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA) has been dedicated from the start to advancing the boundaries of dental science and to encouraging the pursuit of the highest professional standards for the dental profession.

A key part of the Congress programme, the ADA/PFA National Emerging Young Lecturer Competition facilitates ADA Branch-nominated young clinicians to showcase their clinical, research and presentation skills before delegates. Providing insight into the latest work being undertaken in dental school across Australia, the ADA Branch-nominated presenters, each of whom must deliver a 15 minute presentation with a Q&A section, are judged by a panel of four judges, comprising representatives of the ADA and PFA.

Two awards are presented - the National Emerging Young Lecturer which comes with sponsorship from the PFA of $5000 and an Encouragement award of $1000.

Employment Fair for Dental Graduates Marking only its second appearance at the Australian Dental Congress following its premiere at 2015’s event, the Employment Fair showcases an extensive range of employment opportunities for 2017 graduating dentists.

The Employment Fair features a range of organisations from across the dental industry including private practices, public sector employers and companies, with whom you will be able to book appointments to discuss the opportunities available with them.

It’s a can’t-miss opportunity to interview the interviewers that can only enrich your Congress experience and your future career prospects within the profession.

If you represent a potential employer, the Employment Fair will be your chance to reach out to would-be employees in a face-to-face settings in a way that online sites, effective though they are, cannot hope to emulate.

For more information or if you are interested in participating please contact Congress Management: [email protected].

Important InformationYour registration acknowledgment, which details your selected options, will include everything you need to know before you arrive at Congress, where you’ll receive your final programme and exhibition details. To keep up to date with the latest news and information in the meantime, go to www.adcmelbourne2017.com. You’ll also receive regular updates via e-newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The newsletter in particular will contain a wealth of important educational information and should be your first port of call for all the latest news about Congress.

Continuing Professional DevelopmentAn important part of ADA’s role is the biennial Australian Dental Congress, where members have the opportunity to hear guest lecturers from overseas and Australia speak on current issues and practices affecting dentistry.

The Australian Dental Congress is a signature Continuing Professional Development event for the dental community, with CPD hours attainable by eligible delegates for specific programmes.

The main scientific programme and associated workshops, forums and lunch and learn sessions offers over 32 hours of continuing professional development for dentists, 12 hours for dental hygienists, oral health therapists and dental therapists, and 11.5 hours for dental prosthetists.

The new and improved Congress App will make the recording of your CPD hours easier than ever before. No more running back to the door to swipe in again or keeping a manual record of the sessions you've attended - the Congress App allows you to check in from your seat, using a unique code for every session. NO scanning facilities will be at the lecture doors.

Accompanying PersonsDesigned for the partners of dental professionals attending Congress, the Accompanying Persons Programme is undergoing some exciting changes for the 2017 event.

The usual Accompanying Persons Lunch, which is typically held on the Friday of Congress, is being replaced by a Thursday meet-and-greet event where you’ll be able to get to know your fellow attendees in a relaxed and convivial setting.

Another welcome addition is a tourism desk operated by The Best of Victoria which will remain open for the duration of Congress, allowing you to plan your own rewarding experience of the beautiful host city of Melbourne.

One thing that won’t be changing is the Accompanying Person’s Lounge where you will be able to help yourself to a range of hot and cold beverages while catching up with friends and colleagues from Australia, and quite possibly, around the world.

• Welcome Reception (Wednesday 17 May)

Welcome Reception – Wednesday 17th MayWelcome to beguiling, colourful, vibrant Melbourne.

The Welcome Reception for the 37th Australian Dental Congress will draw you into the bright, graffiti-decorated laneways of a city known for its food, fashion and festive air. As you reconnect with close friends and colleagues in celebration and anticipation of the event to come, you will be surrounded by all the carnivale-fun and colour of Moomba, with street theatre performers and bands at every turn, and food and drinks held aloft by waiters in an intoxicating blend of everything that makes Melbourne such an engaging place to be.

Included in your registration no matter which category you occupy, the Welcome Reception kicks off at 6.30pm on Wednesday 17 May and runs until 8.30pm. If you’re looking to party on after the official night is over, the endless delights of South Promenade are close by.

Social Programme

Congress Late Night – Saturday 20th MayCalacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls) everywhere you look. Brightly-decorated ofrendas (altars) covered in candles, fruit and toys. The welcoming of the dead back into the land of the living with celebration and song.

This is Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), and this is the theme for Congress Late Night at 37th Australian Dental Congress on Saturday 20 May, open to all registered delegates across all programmes. Stepping into the expansive surrounds of The Peninsula, situated by the river on Melbourne's Docklands, you will be regaled by Los Romanticos, a 22 piece Mariachi band who embody the essence of México playing a vibrant mix of traditional folk and modern pop.

Walking through the festively decorated space filled with Mexican dancers, food and drink stands serving tequila and churros, your face painted, should you so choose, in the vividly-coloured Sugar Skull tradition that is the literal face of this iconic festival, you will enter a whole new world.

This amazing night is a brilliant opportunity for anyone attending Congress to celebrate in style and have a whole lot of fun – numbers are strictly limited though so make sure when you're completing your registration you signal your intention to attend.
