The July 20, 2016, meeting of the

Cleveland Stroke Club was a perfect

    symphonic experience, blending great

company, great music, some good moves,

and awesome food together for a

memorable evening! We began with a

wonderful sandwiches and salads made by

Rita and her helpers Mason and Al. I was

lucky enough to win the 50-50 raffle

    drawing. July birthdays were celebrated

by June Emerson, and several others. June

and Dorothy Emerson are celebrating their

anniversary also, as are Roger Gulbranson

and Debbie Felt, the Mengays, and the

    Schecters.

We were thrilled that our own music

    therapist, Dwyer Conklin, MM, MT-BC,

returned to educate, entertain, and have a

good time with us, along with his intern,

Taylor. “Time to Tune In,” his talk’s title

presented us with many reasons why we

should enjoy music in our lives, including

brain health and repair, a harmonic body,

and becoming one with the rhythm of our

body and all of life. Dwyer Conklin, of

DBC3 Music Therapy, LLC, specializes in

    neurological rehabilitation solutions

through music. You can contact him at

    970-297-8506 [email protected]. The

    therapy techniques he uses include

    Modified Melodic Intonation Therapy to

    improve functional speech through

melodic phrases to access right brain

    language areas, Musical Speech

Stimulation which uses songs to facilitate

the output of speech, Rhythmic Speech

Cuing using auditory rhythm to cue

    speech, Vocal Intonation Therapy using

exercises to address the rehabilitation of

voice disorders, and Oral Motor and

Respiratory Exercises using musical exercises to enhance articulatory control,

respiratory strength and function of the speech

    apparatus.

    President: Chris Vuyancih

    Vice-President: Deena and Brian Barrett

    216-410-2306

    Secretary: Barry and Barbara Schecter

    Treasurer: John Pumper

    Assistant Treasurer: Brian Barrett

    Officers 5/2016-5/2017

None of what I just typed reflects

Dwyer’s fun and happy approach to

    therapy; his enthusiasm is definitely

    refreshing and enjoyable, and his

    knowledge and professionalism are

impressive! I had never heard all of the

    verses to “Clementine” before!! He

proved that when we are moving to the

beat of music, we do not notice the

effort or pain of movement! By

working with music and rhythm on the

right side of the brain, the rest of the

brain is stimulated into working also.

By the time Dwyer got to “Hit the

Road, Jack” I could not believe we had

been listening so long. We all thank

Dwyer Conklin for sharing his evening,

his expertise, and enthusiasm with us!!

Kindred Hospital, the site of our “Caregiver Meeting”, has changed ownership

and is now called Select Medical. We are so pleased that they will continue to

host and cater our meetings. Thank you, Select Medical!

Caregiver Meeting Name Change. As you know, on the first Wednesday of the

month, our Club hosts a meeting that includes dinner followed by a break-out

session for caregivers and one for survivors. The meeting was officially named

the “Caregiver Meeting” and over time informally called it the “Kindred

Meeting”—a nice play on words. Due to the change in ownership PLUS the fact

that the Survivors’ Meeting has grown in numbers as well as influence, we

would like to change the name of our meeting to the “First Wednesday

Meeting.” If anyone has a better name, let us know.

Picnic Planning for 2017! We are starting to plan our next picnic. At our First

Wednesday Meeting in August, attendees will help us form committees to

select next year’s venue, menu, layout, games and entertainment. There will also

be committees to help us find volunteers for set-up, grilling, break-down, and

promotion. If you have ideas and time that you want to contribute, please contact

Geri Pitts, Kay Exl, or Deb Felt.
