The dream team

for the 2012 DTM.

As a woman, how did you fi nd your way into racing?

In my case, through my family. My father raced

go-karts. From a very young age, we would often go to

the track to watch him. That kind of experience makes

you want to achieve something yourself someday.

Did you ever dream that you would be starting as an

Audi team driver in the DTM?

The DTM actually represents the fulfi lment of a

dream for me. It’s a great opportunity and I plan to

take full advantage of it. Of course, it also represents

a major challenge.

What’s it like for a woman working in a world domi-

nated by men?

I don’t know anything else. I’ve been competing

against men since my go-kart days and I’ve always

been accepted. If you prove yourself and come up

with the goods, it’s really not an issue.

How were you welcomed into the Audi family?

Open-heartedly! I get great support and everyone gives

me tips. That’s really important for me. The solidarity

within the Audi family is truly incredible.

Audi secured the title in 2011 with the A4 and the youngest team

of drivers of all time. The only woman behind the wheel: Rahel Frey.

on your own. But we

all celebrate together.

Audi made signifi cant changes to its driver line-up for the

2011 DTM compared to the previous year, with three

additions and two reshuffl es. Only four drivers were sitting

in the same cockpits they had sat in 2010. Before the

season began, the average age of the team went down to

27 years old. Never had an Audi DTM team been so young,

which made the success they enjoyed even more notewor-

thy. Six fi rst-place fi nishes and winning the title early on in

Valencia saw Audi crowned as champions of the 2011 DTM

season. Mattias Ekström celebrated his third victory of the

season, Filipe Albuquerque followed with his fi rst podium

position and, what’s more, Edoardo Mortara was voted

“Rookie of the Year”.

challenge. Le Mans. The toughest race in the world ended

with an Audi victory in 2011. It’s becoming

something of a habit.

The Le Mans 24 hour race has been staged since 1923. To this day, the track has a makeshift feel

about it: The “Circuit des 24 Heures” uses part of the “Circuit Bugatti” permanent racetrack, but by

far the largest part consists of public roads that need to be closed especially for the race.

Treacherous bumps, ruts caused by trucks and poor asphalt conditions are just three consequences

of this compromise – and all of them pose a great challenge for the drivers. A top speed of 405 km/h

was achieved on the Hunaudières straight in 1988. Since 1990, this stretch of the track has been

calmed with two chicanes. The Audi R18 TDI, however, can still reach speeds of over 300 km/h at five

points: before the two chicanes, before Mulsanne, before the notorious Indianapolis corner and before

the Porsche Curves. Cars race at full throttle for over 70 per cent of the race, meaning that, with an

assumed lap time of 3.30 minutes, the driver has his foot flat on the pedal for 2.27 minutes per lap.

Audi ultra’s lightweight construction is not just

efficient, it also beats all the competition.

But a heavyweight contender.

Audi secured its tenth victory at Le Mans in 2011 with the R18 TDI. Since fi rst entering the world’s

most important endurance race in 1999, the brand with the four rings has emerged victorious nine

times with its R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. For the fi rst time since 1999, Audi brought a closed

coupé to Le Mans in 2011. “In future, aerodynamic effi ciency is going to be even more important at

Le Mans than it has been in the past”, says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport. “A closed

car off ers clear advantages in this respect. Our computer simulations have been confi rmed in the

wind tunnel and during initial test drives on the race track.” The carbon-fi bre monocoque of the

R18 TDI is not made up of two parts, as is standard for closed Le Mans prototypes, but of a single

piece, saving weight and increasing rigidity. One of the technological highlights of the R18 TDI is

its headlamps, made for the fi rst time completely from light-quantity optimised LEDs. The daytime

running LEDs form a “1”, designed to evoke associations with the historic Audi trademark.

Between 2000 and 2005, the Audi R8 motorsport prototype won the Le Mans

24 hour race fi ve times and celebrated 63 victories in 80 races. Based on the successful

prototype, Audi developed a super sports car with a mid-mounted engine for the

road and, logically, called it “R8”. The success of the R8 road sports car led to the idea

for a GT3 sports car for customer sport – the R8 LMS.
