Dear parents and carers, At Burlington Danes Primary we place enormous value on teaching children about the importance of community and helping others. For our harvest festival next week we will be collecting donations for the Hammersmith and Fulham food bank which helps local people in crisis. Packaged food items can be brought into your child's class from Monday next week and the charity will be collecting them on Thursday. We are delighted to introduce the new parent representatives to you in the newsletter this week. The parent representatives should be your point of contact if you have ideas or concerns that involve either your child's class or the whole school. Please introduce yourself to your rep and pass on your contact details if you would like to receive information from them. The parent representatives had their first meeting with myself and Mrs Crowder this morning and are looking forward to starting their roles. There are lots of important future dates in the newsletter today for you to add to your diary. The parent association have been busy pulling together a calendar of all the fantastic fundraising events that will be taking place so please take a look and think about how you can get involved. We have started learning about “Families” this week.

The children have been drawing pictures of their family members, and they have also enjoyed playing families in the home corner. We have been making salt dough, and used moulds to make our family members. We have been reading stories about families and we have been talking about what is similar in our families and what is different.

We have learnt how much our name is worth, by placing 1p coins on each sound of our names! In the construction area we have been building our ideal homes with our friends.

In maths we have continued learning about patterns, and we have started learning about numbers 1, 2, 3 and counting reliably using our pointing finger.

In literacy, we have been re-telling part of the story ‘Room on the Broom’ using actions. We have also been sequencing the story, drawing our favourite part, and we are starting to learn about the setting too!

Nursery

This week Potter class children have continued learning about ‘Feelings and Emotions’.

We have focused on the positive feelings and how we can make our friends and family happy! As part of our Experiential Learning we have played ‘Fill the bucket’; through this activity we have encouraged positive behaviour and the children have seen how rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love! To remember these emotions, we played the ‘Emotion Dice’ game, where the children had the opportunity to express when they feel happy, sad, excited, scared, angry or bored.

At Exploration Time we have continued making emotion puppets, drawing emotions in the sand and using shapes to create different faces.

In Literacy we acted out: “Owl Babies” and read books relating to emotions, such as “Who is afraid of the big bad bunny”.

In Maths we have learnt 5 short songs relating to the following shapes: triangle, square, rectangle, circle and oval.

Year 2 This week in Year 2 we started our new Literacy unit on newspaper reports. We have been learning to retell, 'Local Boy Removes the Sword' - a report about Arthur to support our learning on The Sword in the Stone. We looked at challenging vocabulary in the report, looked at how to change sentences to make them past tense and discussed the key features of a report, and how they differ to stories.

In Maths we have been partitioning two-digit numbers and using our number bonds to add and subtract numbers mentally. This has been challenging work but the children have coped well. In our arithmetic sessions we practiced skip counting in 10s, learned how to find one third of a quantity and practised our two-times tables.

For our topic lesson this week we learned about medieval fashion! We looked at how nobles and peasants dressed in the medieval times and compared their clothing to the way we dress today. We then completed a writing task, expressing our opinions about how we would prefer to dress if we had the choice.

Year 1

In Literacy this week, we have been introduced to a new character to help us with our learning. Sally-Ann has written a recount of her trip to the park. Over the week, we have taken steps to learning this recount off by heart which will help us to produce our own recount next week. We have sequenced and acted out this recount. This was followed by discussing some new vocabulary and we filmed one another telling the recount using our text maps. In Reading, we have been enjoying a new genre of writing. Finding out all about animals in a non-fiction text. We have learnt some new vocabulary (smooth and wild) which we have been starting to use in our writing and we discussed the big question: Why should we learn about animals?

In Maths, we have been continuing to develop our understanding of how addition can be represented in part-whole models and through creating word problems. The children enjoyed discussing how the owls could be sorted into 2 parts and how we could create a problem using their ideas.

In Topic, we wrote about our trip to London Zoo with the aim to show what we already knew about using time adverbials. In Science, we have been focussing on classifying animals into groups and discussing the features of each of the groups. In Music we have been practicing our new songs with a focus on developing our rhythm and timing.

Class Assemblies Each class will have an opportunity to present an assembly to which family members are invited to attend. These take place between

3:30-3:50pm and start promptly. Please

arrive in plenty of time.

Celebration Assemblies Celebration assemblies take place each Friday, again between 2:00-2:20pm. We celebrate the achievements of children throughout the week, share excellent pieces of work and present certificates to children for their accomplishments.

If your child is to be presented with a certificate at this assembly we will send a text message to alert you and you’re welcome to come along to see them receive it.

Parent Workshops

Throughout this year we will be running a series of parent workshops that we hope will not only give you a better insight into what and how your children learn at BDPA, but also provide you with some ideas and strategies that you might use to support your child’s learning at home.

The workshops are open to all parents who wish to attend and will be held on Thursdays between 8:30-9:00am.

Understand how we teach maths in school and how you can support your child’s enthusiasm for the subject at home.

Black History Month

During the month of October our school participates in Black History Month. This culminates in a Gala, which is held in the secondary school.

This year, the even will take place on Thursday 19th October. You are warmly invited to attend this event in which the whole school (primary, secondary and sixth form) participate. One of the highlights of the event this year will most certainly be the a performance of by the primary children.

Furthermore, Blyton’s class assembly following this event will also be on the theme of Black History Month and will further demonstrate the children’s learning in school around this issue.

On the same day, straight after school (4:00pm), our parents association will be running a ‘World Food Sale’. The idea is that you are invited to bring into school a dish inspired by any place in the world that is special to you, to share with the rest of our community. The dish might be from your home country, a holiday destination with special memories or even a place whose culture fascinates you. This food will then be put up for sale and will also provide a chance for pus to meet as a community and share the stories behind our food. All money raised will go toward supporting your child’s education.

It is important that all children come to school dressed smartly in their full school uniform.

Over the last week it has been noticed that footwear in particular, for some children does not meet the criteria as specified in our uniform policy.

Smart, black shoes are required of the styles shown below. Further details on our uniform policy can be found on the school website. Trainers worn for P.E> should also be black. Please make reference to this and ensure your child is dressed correctly for school.

As Christmas is fast approaching we are

looking to design and create costumes for

this year’s Christmas plays. We will require

fabric for this as well as anyone with sew-

ing / tailoring skills to support with the

making of these costumes.

If you have any fabric to donate or wish to

support with the creation of the costumes,

please let us know. Material can be left at

the school office.

Next week we will celebrate our harvest festival. As part of this celebration we will be accepting donations, which will be sent to the Hammersmith and Fulham foodbank. Donations can be left with your child’s class teacher or at the school office.

am an Australian/Czech citizen and have

been living in London for near a decade. I

work in Property Development on Savile

Row, but my background ranges from

Psychology right the way through to

Fashion. Favourite thing to do is snuggling

with my little family, and mooching around

Portobello Road on the weekend.

I am happy to be a parent rep for my son's

class as I am dedicated to not only his

education but education in general.

Hopefully I can provide some valuable

input from a parent's perspective on what

is important in school life, what needs to be

improved and what needs to be prioritised

all in the name of the BDPA community.

Hi, I'm Ray Braxton's parent, and I am

the class representative for Blyton

Class. One of our school principles is

that "No child be left behind". I would like

to ensure that no parent feels left behind

either. I want to hear your concerns,

thoughts and suggestions on school

matters. I would also like to see us maintain

the strong community spirit we started out

with, especially as we grow, so we can

uplift, strengthen, inspire and guide each

other as a school family with a shared goal

of excellence.

Brad Ladewig

Brad Ladewig is the father of Sophie (Bond

Class) and Benjamin (Rosen Class). He

works in the education sector as a

University Lecturer and is passionate about

education at all levels, and in particular,

early childhood education. He is keen to

hear your comments and suggestions on

how to make the learning experience for

Bond class even better.

Roof Garden—Phase 1

As I am sure you are aware there is a roof top classroom at the top of the school which the PTA would like to develop into a lovely learning space for all the children.

Currently we are in the midst of our first phase of development which is putting 6 planters with bulbs and winter bedding plants on the roof for the children to enjoy while we plan our second phase of development. The second phase will be more extensive and include a covered learning area, an outside story space, rain water harvesting, permanent planting, a weather station, a wildlife area and space for the classes to have their own veg/flower beds.

We have made the 6 large planters and have a selection of bulbs and winter bedding plants to plant up. We have the following:

Spring bulb: daffodils, crocus, tulips, chionodoxa, fritillary, grape hyacinth, dwarf iris, anemone, narcissus and brodiaea

Winter bedding: stocks, sweet William, wallflowers, violas, polyanthus, bellis, forget-me-not, pansy, primrose

We are looking for more bedding plants particularly winter interest plants like cyclamens, hellebores, winter flowering heathers, long grasses, heuchera or really anything that people can donate. Additionally any spring bulbs that people have especially snow drops, hyacinths, blue bells, pleione and more tulips and fritillary but again are happy with anything that you can donate. Any unusual and/or edible plants or herbs would also be very much appreciated. Please can you leave any donations with Mr Currie with a note of what it is – we would like to include everything we plant in a log book.

We are also looking for people who would be happy to help – people who love plants, people who work with plants/ in garden centres/ in hardware shops, people who are handy with power tools or people who would be happy to lug a bag of soil up two flights of stairs.
