One of our mission priorities is to teach stewardship as a way of life. As a way of life, stewardship teaches that we do not own anything; all is on loan from God, entrusted to us to manage as stewards of what belongs to God. Stewardship teaches us to use anything according to God’s good pleasure, which is to provide ourselves, our dependents, and to the poor with those things needed to live in dignity. Helping those who cannot protect or provide for themselves is an essential practice of our Catholic religion; indeed, it is the mark of authenticity for followers of Jesus. The Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Charities helps us help the poor: organizing the work, enlisting volunteers, and securing donations, such as by means of this annual appeal. As you consider how much you will share in the annual appeal, think about what Jesus said: Give and gifts will be given to you… The measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. The call to the Permanent Diaconate is a call by God to a ministry of service to the Church. The discernment process requires prayer and the ability to listen to God’s invitation along with input from spouse, family, pastor, and faith community. Discernment is rarely a one-time event. Rather, it is nurtured over time and throughout the Diaconal Formation journey. Spiritual Direction becomes a key element in the process. Considering the Deaconate?

Arzobispo Michael Jackels

A note from Fr. Tony It is hard to believe that Ash Wednesday (February 14) is only about 10 days away! Since Ash Wednesday marks the

beginning of our Lenten Journey, it is a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. However, it is not a holy day of obligation in regards to Mass. But for many, receiving ashes on this day is important and not necessarily the Mass. To accommodate the crowd and the desire to receive ashes, extra services (which can include services outside of Mass) are being planned. So, the schedule is as follows…..

7:30 am Mass- St. Mary, Eldora 5:00 pm Mass- St. Mary, Ackley 6:30 pm Mass- St. Mark, Iowa Falls 6:30 pm Liturgy of the Word and Distribution of Ashes (no communion)- St. Mary, Eldora 7:15 pm Mass- St. Patrick, Hampton This seems to be the best way of addressing the importance of the day, the desire of the people to receive ashes, the

availability of the priests, and accommodating the various factors such as religious education classes. Have a great week!
