Hello Fellow Congregants,

As we approach RoshHashanah and Yom Kippurour thoughts turn to themeaning of the High HolyDays. To me, they are atime to reflect on the pastyear and look to the yearahead; a time to think aboutfamily, friends, andforgiveness, as we offer upour prayers and hope thatour future will be a positiveone. One thing more I would ask from all of you is tothink about this year at ATC, and how your prayers andsupport, both physically and financially, can go a longway in making ATC a place where positive thingshappen; a place where we all can come together tolaugh, cry and rejoice, sharing our triumphs and oursorrows. I hope to be able to see you at services so wecan celebrate the "Head of The Year" and listen to thesound of the Shofar together.

ATC has come a long way over the last two years and mostof it has been positive. Membership is up, Minyan issupported more than it ever has been and the buildingitself has seen some major refurbishing. Our committeesare all working toward planning new and excitingprogramming for all of us to enjoy. The enthusiasm thatI see from so many of you is exciting and really somethingwe all should be proud of. We need to keep that going. So please keep a look out for future events and especiallyour Friday Night Unplugged and Saturday Morning LiveShabbat services and save the dates.

As your new president, I promise to do everything that Ican do to continue the positive momentum that we haveseen recently. I promise to be honest, open and presentto each and every one of you. The Executive Board iscommitted to making changes where they are needed andwe have already begun doing that. The budget for2015-2016 was done differently. We added new GeneralBoard and Executive Board members. We created andimplemented new policies managed by a new committeeto manage hardship requests for financial aid. We areplanning ahead in our fundraising. Also, we are in theprocess of forming a new Strategic Planning Committeethat will focus on the long term goals of ATC.

It occurs every year in the Spring.I receive a phone call or an e-mail from a student at a privatehigh school (usually, Catholic) or university who is takinga course in Comparative Religions, asking for permission tovisit our shul some weekday afternoon or Erev Shabbat. Wearrange for such a visit be it a large or small group.Instructors usually accompany a group of students.

My presentation always includes a description of sacreditems used in Jewish worship, a very brief history of theSynagogue in Jewish life, the meaning of Bar/BatMitzvah, the Jewish education we provide for ourchildren, and, if requested, an explanation of the closestJewish holy day. I always find Passover interesting. I willhave each person present sample a piece of matzah. It mayseem strange, but these students always seem to love thatdry cracker; the box and a half is soon gone! We concludethese visits (if on religious school days) with a short lookinto our Hebrew School classrooms so that our guests havesome idea of what it means for an eight year old to readand converse in Hebrew.

We have many groups requesting a visit to our Synagogue. And, numerous have been the people who seek explanationsabout Judaism. I remember the students at Kolbe-CathedralHigh School in Bridgeport declining an invitation becausethey were not allowed to enter a different House of Worship(not so with Fairfield Prep or St. Joseph's High Schools). I amintrigued when I receive requests from individual students ontheir own to visit the shul for educational purposes and tolearn why the Jew practices his faith as he does.

The interest and enthusiasm of these individuals and groupsare very pronounced. They ask good questions and areanxious to know answers. They exhibit an attitude ofawareness about a new path now being paved in the world: apath of deeper understanding along which there would befriendship between persons and brotherhood among peoples.

Thank you letters usually are written as follows. "Rabbi, please accept my deepest thanks and appreciation for thewonderful afternoon/evening in your beautiful Synagogue. It was an experience that we will never forget. Thank youalso for the precious time you donated so lavishly. We willkeep you in our remembrances and prayers. I have thehonor to remain, Yours gratefully, ....."

As Jews, we need this kind of understanding to continue togrow in our world. Whatever we on our part can do topromote it, we should do with all our strength.

As many of you know,ATC will rent space toFaith4Life Church, anaffiliate of Word of FaithInternational ChristianChurch. Word of FaithMinistry is one of the mostpro-Israel and pro-Jewishpeople ministries in theEvangelical pantheon.Indeed, Bishop KeithButler, founder of Word ofFaith is a co-founder ofChristians United for Israeland is unstinting in hissupport without qualification. He and I are also friendly.

These people, indeed many Evangelicals with whom I deal(and I am very careful due to the issue of missionizing andconversionary activities) stand out as the most consistentlysupportive group of Israel and Jews in the US. The need forsupport for Israel and the world Jewish population (only13.5 million), both under great siege, is great. Word ofFaith, Assemblies of God, Apostolics, most Pentacostals, all pre-millenial dispensationalist support is overwhelming, consistent and unconditional. This is contradistinction tothe official positions of almost every Mainline Protestantdenomination today.

Attend any single CUFI Salute to Israel event that suchchurches and organizations (such as CUFI) host/sponsoreach year. Listen to these Pastors speak and talk to themprivately. Make an appointment to meet and speak toPastor Ronald Hopkins. You will be reassured of theirfriendship for no other reason than it is the right thing forthem to do.

Entrance to the Sanctuary is not permitted during those parts of the service when worshippers are standing (e.g., theAmidah, Kedushah, Shofar Blowing, Ark Openings), as well as during Torah readings, recitation of Haftarah,Rabbi’s sermon and President’s address. Anyone wishing to enter will be asked to stand just inside the door untila proper time can be found to take a seat.

No one will be prohibited from leaving. If the doorway becomes crowded, people will be asked to discretely findseats in the rear of the Sanctuary.

3. All men must wear kippot in the synagogue. Jewish men will be asked to wear a tallit. Women have the option. Please note that synagogue tallitot will be in short supply. If you own your own tallit, you are encouraged to bring it.

Dedications received after August 15thwill be acknowledged in the next issue

Just to Clarify …High Holiday Prayer Book DetailsThank you to all who have dedicated High Holiday prayerbooks over the past year.

Your ongoing donations have recognized those who areimportant in our lives and your generosity in doing so hashelped support our synagogue. We will continue thisprogram year-round until every new prayer book has beenre-dedicated!

If you dedicated a prayer book before last year's HighHoliday services, those books were specifically set asidefor you to use at last year's services. Those books arenow part of the general High Holiday prayer bookinventory and will be available for anyone to use duringthe holidays. Those books will not be set aside againspecifically for you.

If you dedicated a prayer book any time after last year'sHigh Holiday services, those books are considered newdedications and they will be set aside for you to use atthis year's services. Those books will be located on atable inside the foyer and will be clearly marked withyour name.

As always, we kindly ask that you leave all prayer booksat the synagogue and do not bring them home. Please bereminded that you have purchased a bookplate dedicationand not an actual prayer book to keep. As with alldedicated Siddurim, these books have a loving home inour shul!

Thank you!

Scrip fundraising is a program that allows families to raise money for ATC. Scrip is just another way to payfor everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards.

You purchase gift cards from your scrip-sellers at face value, and we purchase those cards from GreatLakes Scrip Center at a reduced price. We stock many of the popular merchants, and we are happy toorder any others. This way ATC receives an instant rebate. It’s really that simple!

When you use scrip gift cards at your favorite retailers, you’re fundraising while you shop. We offer over300 of the country’s biggest brands, including grocery, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, home improvement, and more. Just by using scrip to pay for your normal weekly purchases, you can easilyraise $500 or more per year. It’s time to put your shopping dollars to work!
