ATC Bulletin ATC’s 2 ND ANNUAL SQUARE DANCE WAS GREAT FUN! On Saturday evening, October 12th, about 40 pardners gathered to do-si-do, circle left and right, and promenade the evening away! No experience was necessary, because we had a terrific caller, Steve Park, who taught us all the steps to great music! Lots of us had fun dressing up for the occasion, and there were cowboy hats and boots galore! We kept up our energy with delicious refreshments – apple cider, hot pretzels, cookies and brownies – and the excitement peaked with the drawing of the winning raffles for some great prizes! Congratulations to our winners, who went home with a Cuisinart Multi-Prep-Plus processor, a Vanderbilt Health Club 3-month membership, a Mophie cell phone charger, or gift cards from Zayde’s, Kohl’s, Crescent Ridge, Bed Bath & Beyond and Michael’s. Thanks so much to the generous local businesses and ATC donors who made the raffle possible! Of course, the Square Dance would never have been possible without the enthusiastic help and cooperation of so many ATC volunteers! From promoting the event both at ATC and in the community, to staffing the welcome desk, setting up the décor and helping in the kitchen, all of our efforts paid off handsomely. THANK YOU ALL!!! And since everyone is clamoring to do it again next year – sure, why not?!

At ATC we are always pleased when someone remarks onour slogan, 'Make ATC your Second Home'. OK, no onehas ever said this (at least to me), but this is anappropriate intro as it truly represents who we are. No oneenters our doors who isn't greeted warmly. Whether youare looking for religious services, adult education foryourself, religious education for your children, advice orcounseling from Rabbi J, or social interactions with newfriends, you will find it all here at ATC.

And I can tell you… there is a new and contagious energy! Can't you feel it??!! We are sensing new energy in ourcombined religious school. Member services has welcomed15 new families to ATC in the past few months, atremendous effort, AND a hearty welcome all our newmembers!! With the help of many, we provide engagingand diverse programming ideas such as our second annualATC Square Dance, and Brotherhood's SUKKOBERFEST2019. Where else, but at ATC, can you go to a morningservice, shared with Israeli exchange students, and enjoya taste of America, with a Fenway Park themed Kiddush.

Keep reading our emails for upcoming events such as anevening of jazz with the Abletones in December, a morningof schmoozing at our Not-So-Passover Brunch in April, andwatch for our Gala 100 in 2020. What synagogue offers arenowned 24-piece Swing Band, provides the culinaryskills, and creativity with events? ATC.

Our hope is that the energy and "buzz" we are generatingwill help appeal to new members. Growth in membershipis our #1 priority. Let me be clear, we have no aspirationsto be a "big" congregation. Being a medium, welcomingand intimate community is an integral part of who we areand that isn't going to change. At the same time, we want

From the Rabbi’s DeskA rabbi visited a woman in her nineties who was in thehospital. The woman complained to the rabbi, "Rabbi, I amin such pain from my arthritis. Why did G-d strike me witharthritis? My mother never had arthritis, and neither didmy grandmother?" The rabbi asked, "How long did yourmother and grandmother live?" The woman replied, "Mymother died in childbirth, she was just shy of forty yearsold. My grandmother, for that time period, lived quite along life, until she was in her mid-sixties." The rabbianswered, "Your pain is coming from your blessings. Youhave been blessed with over ninety years of life on thisearth, but you must live with curse of arthritis." So often, our biggest struggles come from life's blessings.

It is cliché to say "We simply must look at the glass as halffull and not as half empty." Rather, we must be able tobless G-d for what we have in life regardless of whether wesee the good or the bad. The mechanism that we have forthis is brachot - blessings. We have blessings for nearlyevery experience, for hearing bad news, for eating food, even for using the rest room. A blessing is both a 'thank-you' and a 'please'. When we say the motzi over the bread,we both thank G-d for 'bringing forth bread from the earth'and raise consciousness of those without enough food. Theblessing after using the rest room reads 'Blessed are you

G-d who has createdmiraculous openings andclosings, that if not workingproperly would prevent usfrom standing before You inworship." This blessingthanks G-d for our miraculousbody and reminds us (and G-d)of those whose bodies are notworking properly.

One easy way that we can incorporate a little bit ofJewishness, recognition of God's blessings and a sense ofspirituality in our everyday routines is by saying brachotover our food. In America, we have an entire holidaydedicated to recognizing G-d's blessings -- Thanksgiving. We can make this American Holiday into a Jewish holidayby both saying the brachot over the food that we eat andtaking a moment to recognize the blessings we have in ourlives. Our Jewish family celebrations need not be limitedto the times on the Jewish calendar. Thanksgiving gives usthe opportunity to transform a turkey dinner into a highlyspiritual experience.

    Rabbi J

Who are the Heroes of the Hanukkah Story? We know the heroes of Hanukkah as the Maccabees, apriestly family from the town of Modi'in in the foothills ofJudah, who revolted against the Syrian Greek attempt toimpose heathen practices upon the Jewish population.Mattityahu and his sons (Judah, Yohanan, Shimon, Eliezerand Jonathan), all members of the Hasmonean family, led arebellion against their Greek overlords.

Maccabee is an acrostic created by joining the first letter ofthe Hebrew words, Mi kamocha ba'elim Ado-shem, whichmeans "who is like You among the mighty, O G-d."

According to one theory, 'maccabee' was the battle cry ofthe Jewish patriots who warred against the Syrian Greeksin 165 BCE.

According to a second theory, Maccabee is the Hebrewword for 'hammer,' derived from the root letters m-k-v.Judah, the leader of the revolt against the Syrian Greeks, was given the name 'Maccabee' due to his great strength.

Adult EducationDue to popular request, there will be 2 adult continuingeducation classes offered.

Elementary Hebrew through Davenen/Prayer Hebrew - ifyou need a refresher course in Hebrew reading for theSiddur or relearning to read Hebrew, this course is for you.

Haftarah Trope - learn how to chant the Haftarah by way ofthe musical notations that we all see in the Chumash. Thisclass will run for 6-8 weeks.

Religious School NewsOur Religious School is off to a greatstart this year. Our collaboration withTemple Beth Emunah has brought somewonderful new students to our schooland new ideas to improve our school.

The students learned about the HighHolidays and participated both in theservice and other activities related tothe event. Thanks to Rabbi Gouze forthe interesting lessons on the Shofarand Tashlich. The children reallyenjoyed seeing their words disappearinto the water.

Thanks to Rabbi J for teaching thestudents about the Lulav and the Etrog.

We talked about the ushpizin, theguests invited to our Sukkah. Thestudents learned a little about each ofthe seven men who we honor-Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses,Aaron, and David. They will learnmore about each of these people as theyear continues. From there, we willcontinue with discussions about otherimportant people in Jewish history.

Thank you to Bob Bornstein for ourPizza in the Hut event which, unfortunately, had to be held insidedue to the weather.

One of the favorite activities of theyear is decorating our "unkosher"Sukkah in the hall downstairs. Thestudents really had a great timedoing this.

The older class will compose andassemble their own Torah. Each weekas we learn about a Parsha from theTorah, the students illustrate a fewimportant events. We will assemblethese with Atzei Chaim at the end ofthe school year.

Our younger class, taught by MichaelGaffney, also learned about themeaning and customs of our HughHolidays and fall Holidays. Theyjoined the Hoshana Rabbah serviceand marched in the parade. They havebegun to learn the Hebrew alphabet. All of the children will plant etrogimin a few weeks with Marshall Katler.

Our Friday Night Class Service willbe held on November 15th, withdinner beginning at 6:00 PM.

The dinner will be sponsored by theGrinburg family, in honor of Aviv'sBar Mitzvah. Please support ourstudents and their families byattending this event.

Our Chanukah Party will be held onSaturday, December 28th. There aremore details on page 17. Please planto attend.

The students are discussing theconcept of being a mensch. They cameup with very interesting and wellthought out ways to behave if theywant to achieve this status. Please seetheir answers on the following page. You will be very proud of them.

Thank you to all our parents for yoursupport and cooperation. Thewonderful attitude of your children isa reflection of all you do.

Thank you to all who help to makeour School is the warm, inviting, andeducational place it is.

to thrive, and one sign of a healthy, thriving community isgrowth in numbers. The reality is that to continue toprovide the level of services that our family is looking for,and to ensure the future stability of our congregation, weneed to be a little larger than we are now.

We are doing a better job of getting our story out andletting people know who ATC is. Communications teamleader Emily Prigot is promoting the synagogue throughsocial media, i.e. Facebook. Our Team can use assistancewith Instagram and Twitter, so if you are an Instagrameror one that tweets, Emily can certainly use support.

We need everyone to be an ATC Ambassador, and it'seasy. Like us on Facebook. Join our Facebook group.Re-post our postings to your own Facebook page. If youtake a picture at ATC that you can share, send it to usand we'll post it on social media.

And please tell your friends and family members aboutAhavath Torah Congregation. Invite them to an event ora service. If there is a fee, we will be happy to waive thecost to a potential member (I know a few people here). Most of the people reading this message (I can't believeyou are actually reading this) first heard about ATCthrough word of mouth.

Of course, the future of our congregation depends on thewillingness of all to step forward and pitch in. Whateveryour interest, there is a TEAM for a project or an event tohelp with. All of our Teams do important work thatbenefit our ATC community.

Let us know how you would like to help. I'm easy tocontact or find, both literally and figuratively.

Speaking of all this programming, let's not forget ourupcoming events, and a very special 100th ChanukahFamily Party on December 28. All members and theirfamilies are invited. This year, with thanks by Deb Levitz, her collectable (plural for ), will be ondisplay. Our religious school will be making their own

, and we ask families to bring in their family. A candle lighting ceremony will take place

along with the lighting of our ATC menorah. Fun, music, and plenty of food to follow. Families, please bring yourchildren and grandchildren. Make this a family affair.

AND mentioning a Menorah, if you have not seen our GiftShop display…the lights are on. A special sale will behappening in November - watch for their flier.

To all, have a healthy and sweet new year, and thanksfor being part of our ATC family.
