I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name isPhil Weiner and I am proud to be your incoming President for the2009-2010 year. Let me tell you a little bit about myself and why I

decided to take on this position.

I have been a member of ATC for nine years. I am originally fromMalden, and now reside in Norton. I have been married for twenty-threegreat years to my wife, Anne, who is originally from Dartmouth,Massachusetts, via Long Island. Anne was the Membership Chairpersonfor two years and is still a part of the membership committee. I have twodaughters - Larissa, who is 20 and attends the University of Hartford, and Stefanie, who is 16 and attends Norton High School. I have been anactive member of the ATC Brotherhood and have been on the ExecutiveBoard for six years.

You might be asking yourself, "Why would he want thisposition?"….Well, I'll tell you why. When we first moved to Norton, mycousin, Buddy Marcus had talked to me about "his" shul, the Rabbi andwhat ATC had to offer. Having been a member at another temple inEaston, I just listened to him, keeping ATC in the back of my mind. Oneday, in August of 2000, I thought I would stop by and see for myself. When I first stepped into the hallway of ATC, already having mychildren registered at the Easton Temple Hebrew School, I ran intoRabbi J. We spoke about the congregation and what this shul had tooffer. By the end of my conversation with Rabbi J, I knew I had foundmy home.

ATC is very much like my childhood temple, Ezrath Israel in Malden. My great grandparents were members of the Bryant Street Temple in1922, as were my grandparents. Then the temple changed its name fromthe Bryant Street Temple to Temple Ezrath Israel. To this day, myparents have always lived within walking distance to Temple EzrathIsrael….four blocks. My parents, Barbara and Don both served on theExecutive Board there and both held the position of President. My fatheris presently serving his third term. I saw, through them, how importantit is to be part of a temple.

So, as the lead singer of U-2, Bono, would say in one of his earliestsongs, "I will follow". That is why I have decided to become Presidentof ATC. I am following my parents lead…Ahavath Torah has becomemy second home… a place where I feel that the congregation is myextended family.

Thank you to outgoing President, Michelle Glickman, the ExecutiveBoard and Board of Directors, who have all done such a great job. It wasa pleasure working with them for the past two years. I would also like towelcome the incoming Executive Board and Board of Directors. I lookforward to working with them for the next two years.

Our Shul has so much to offer its members. I feel that we can continueto make ATC a much better place for our families. We need to worktogether to improve the infrastructure as well as increase membership.Slowly but surely, the temple is being re-vitalized throughimprovements, thanks to you.

In closing, the Executive Board, Board of Directors and my family wishthe entire congregation a safe and enjoyable summer. Our first GeneralBoard Meeting will be held Wednesday, August 12th.

From the Rabbi’s Desk...Summer is a time of relaxation and quietcontemplation. The beach, the book, the bike are allplaces of respite from an oft busy world. We all needtime to reflect on life's mysteries.

Where is the world's greatest mystery? We might lookdown. There are sermons in stones, Wordsworth tellsus, and one could choose the marvels of the earth orsea. The molten core, the shifting plates and the vastpanoply of life on this spinning orb are all worthymysteries which can grab our individual andcollective focus.

We might look above us. The light of a star thatperished long before Moses still lingers for us. Whatwonders lurk in the unimaginable recesses of spaceare patently unknown, but are such secrets ultimatelyunknowable.

Judaism teaches that after the nature of G-d, thegreatest mystery is oneself. In many ways, to comecloser to G-d demands that we examine ourselves."Inward," wrote Novalis, "goes the way full ofmystery." The more we explore ourselves, the morebaffling we become.

Despite the disciplines that explain human beings toourselves - psychology, anthropology, history, sociology, biology, to name a few - we are stillmysterious creatures.

Jewish history begins with a call to self-knowledge.G-d's first words to Abraham, "Lech lecha," which areusually translated, "Go forth," can also mean, "Go toyou," that is, go inside yourself. Abraham's journeyis also an interior voyage.

Reductive views insisting "human beings are just___"(Fill in the blank: chemicals, impulses, animals, accidents) are as sad as they are mistaken. Humanityis the great, unsolved mystery of the cosmos, gloriousand sometimes horrifying, elevated and debased, butever the paradoxical creation whose fate lies in itsown hands. Where is the great mystery? It residesinside us; in each human heart.

I wish you a summer of contemplation.

Rabbi Henry Gerson Religious School NewsAs I begin to plan for the new, fall academic season, I haveto sit back and reflect upon last year’s curriculum andgoals. The questions to ask are, “Did we achieve ourspecific, desired, planned objectives and goals?” In tryingto answer this question, I shall share a few of the desiredoutcomes and objectives. In general, let me say, that we allacknowledge that we had a fabulously, successful, effective and productive Jewish school year! We arefortunate at ATC to have an exceptionally dedicated, accomplished, competent and talented faculty! They seeeach child as created “in G-d’s image” and attempt totouch each of their hearts and minds and imbue them withthe love of Judaism, Torah, Israel, the Hebrew languageand Klal Yisrael (the collective community of Israel). Theycome to each lesson with enthusiasm and a positiveattitude which enriches and illuminates their teaching andimpact upon our students. In this respect, they parallel theinsights from this week’s Parsha – Shlach L’Cha. WhenMoses sent the twelve scouts to “scout out the land ofCanaan”, Caleb and Joshua were the only two who wereaffirmatively positive in viewing the land of Israel as a“land flowing with milk and honey” and which could beconquered. Each of our teachers perceives our studentswith “strength-based eyes” in appreciating each of theirtalents and capabilities. The retention of our teaching staffis terrifically affirming and validating for their dedication, for our students as well as for any family which isconsidering joining our shul.

We know that it’s not necessarily “cool” to like coming toReligious School but, in spite of that, our students arehappy. They love our music program, they love thechallenge of learning Hebrew and they feel positive aboutbeing Jewish! In speaking with the teachers and measuringthe accomplishments of achieving specific classroom andcurriculum objectives and goals, they respond with aresounding “yes”! Yes, we have achieved positive, effective goals (creatively and dynamically), but……“there never is enough time to cover what we need tocover.” The challenge is always there to accomplish somuch in so little time!

And yet, how can we possibly accomplish in seven yearswhat we need to in order to “keep our children Jewish?” Inplanning and visioning for the upcoming year, some of thequestions I have to ask are: How do we impart to ourchildren a sense of historicity of four thousand years? Howdo we help them understand the wisdom of the Torah? How do we help them appreciate the genius of the Hebrew

language and its brilliant nuances? How do we help themunderstand the embryonic connection and longing forEretz Yisrael (the land of Israel) throughout our entirehistory? Which part of our vast history do we teach andemphasize and which part do “we have to let go?” Why isit that a third of the Nobel Prize winners are Jewish (in allcategories of science, education, medicine, chemistry, etc)and which Jewish personalities do we have them connectwith? Which ones do “we have to let go and not have timeto teach?”

And, yes, what about preparing our students to become aBat/Bar Mitzvah? We also have to teach our students todaven in order for them to, ultimately, be an integral partof the Jewish prayer community. In preparing for the classservices, is it enough to be able to chant and daven? Whereis the time to teach them about communicating with G-d?And what about our Jewish relationship to G-d and theirrelationship with Hashem (G-d)? How do we teach theobservance of Jewish holidays if they are to be observed athome? We, at school, can teach all the facts academically, but, unfortunately, we can’t be at home to enjoy andcelebrate Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Pesach, etc.Our Jewish Holidays are home-based and need to beexperienced and appreciated at home.

And, therefore, aside from discriminating which specificshort-term goals to teach, for me and for any Jewisheducator, there is the long-term vision of “how to keep ourchildren Jewish.” It’s my responsibility to make decisionsabout these short-term goals and objectives and that iswhat I’ve already begun to do this summer. According tothe research of the past fifty years in America, however, itis no secret about the recipe and the ingredients that areneeded for the longer vision of “Keeping our ChildrenJewish.” What we can achieve at school is a taste, albeit asweet taste, of what it is to be Jewish!

The ingredients for a life-long commitment to beingJewish consist of children receiving a Jewish education.Pivotal are studies during the teen-age years as well aspossibly, spending a junior year of college in Israel. Mostcolleges also have courses in Jewish studies. College levelcourses are extremely challenging, informative andcomprehensive compared to having studied at the 6th and7th grade level. Besides becoming a Bat/Bar Mitzvah, children should attend a Jewish camp and participate in anIsrael experience (the younger the experience, the better).

Shabbat and Jewish Holidays need to be observed andcelebrated at home. The correlation exists of involved andparticipatory parents within the shul as well as within theJewish community as to how children relate to theirJudaism. And, finally, parents need to let children knowhow important it is that they create their own Jewish homeand for them to always be Jewish. Add a sense of greatpride and mix well. Nothing in life is guaranteed (as weknow) but if you simmer these ingredients and stir agenerous amount of love and support, you will know thatyou have done your best to keep your children Jewish.

I’ll work this summer to do my very best and plan with ourfaculty and our dedicated parents for a terrificallydynamic, creative and engaging upcoming 2009-2010super academic year!

Wishing you all a relaxing, refreshing and healthy summer,

Ahavath Torah Congregation 99

It has been quite the year within our House. We have beenworking on a variety of things and agreed that we havebeen very remiss in keeping everyone up to date on thegoings on. We will do our best to touch a little oneverything for you.

The roof … the ongoing saga that is our temple roofcontinues to drag on. The initial project was completed afew months back and the work was excellent. Thecompletion exposed some new problems with the drains inthe back of the building, which resulted in waterpenetrating the walls. The issue is being addressed andwill be fully completed before the end of the summer(sooner, we hope).

The Religious School … the water and mold remediationand repair work was finished on time and under budget inthe early part of March, complete with a new paint job inthe hallway. Some additional effort is still required andwill be worked on intermittently over the summer withtotal completion before school reconvenes in September.

The lobby … we completed the initial phase of the lobbyrenovation with new lighting fixtures (thank you BobCohn) and new ceiling tiles and grids. Things look muchbrighter, much crisper and the overall look is much neater. The next phase will include painting of the hallways andthe men's room, as well as refinishing of the floors andsome extra clean-up work around the doorways.

The landscaping … all of the old mulch and bed work inthe front of the building was removed and replaced withnew, fresh, clean bark mulch. A huge THANK YOU toPaul Greenfield (and his helper, Ken Baker) for all theirhard work. The large front bed and the two small side bedswere totally redone, as well as the rotunda bed. Everythinglooks fantastic.

The kitchen … a new freezer has been added to ourcollection of kitchen appliances so we now (usually) havemore than enough space, regardless of what our busycalendar requires. Thank you very much to the SisterhoodGift Shop, Arthur Arkanase and the Brotherhood formaking this happen. We also had the oven professionallycleaned and serviced - inside and out. It looks brand newand now our infamous cooks can go to work making itdirty again.

The sanctuary … the carpets were cleaned by our friendsat Kennedy Carpets just about a month ago. They alsocleaned the hallway down to and into the chapel. All thecarpets look great and our next piece of that project is tohave the sanctuary chairs individually cleaned and readyfor the High Holidays. We also had the broken light bulbsand ballasts in the sanctuary repaired so that our lighting isconsistent and thorough.

The parking lot … the large drain in the back center of thelot was cleaned out, allowing better drainage and causingless pooling of water in the middle of the lot. We arecurrently soliciting bids for a complete parking lotresurfacing and hope to have that project completed in timefor easier and smoother parking at the High Holidayservices.

The Succah … the old succah was tossed for safety andappearance, and plans are currently underway to build anew one, to be ready for this coming Sukkot. There willbe much more on that topic is the coming months, so watchyour email and please be ready to help us when the timecomes for the actual construction.

Lastly, we have had an electrician in on a few occasionsand have done a complete overhaul on our fire alarms andemergency lighting systems. Everything has been testedand is fully functional. The electrician also replaced adozen or so broken ballasts throughout the building andsolved some other minor issues. All is in fine workingorder as of this writing.

All in all, there has been a great deal accomplished with alot of awesome help from a lot of fantastic people, andthere is still much more on the agenda. There are a ton ofpeople to thank for all the effort and you all know who youare - thank you, thank you, thank you!

Acceptable Items for the Recycling BinYou Can Support Israel Easily…Merely by changing spending habits, Jewish families livingabroad can inject some 7 billion shekels a year into the Israelieconomy - for a net gain of 20,000 new jobs.  How?  Bymaking sure to spend as little as $50 each month on Israeliproducts.

The Jewish Agency, the World Zionist Organization, and theWhite and Blue Mission of the Israeli ManufacturersAssociation have begun a joint campaign to promote thepurchase of Israeli goods abroad.

Arutz-7's Hagit Rotenberg reports that the $50-a-month shiftcould lead to a 3% increase in Israel's industrial sales.Purposeful spending of this nature, it is thought, could alsolead to greater solidarity and identification with the Jewishstate.

ATC Shabbat Shalom ProgramShalom chaverim! My mommy and daddy have beenteaching me the Shabbat brachas and it’s been a lot of fun,so I thought others out there might like to get involved, too!

As part of our ATC Little Kids Club, we would like tointroduce a new program for kids of all ages called theShabbat Shalom Program. Beginning Friday, July 31 at 10AM, and recurring monthly, we invite children of all agesand their parents to join us at the schul where we’ll conductan early-bird version of the candle lighting, Kiddush andHamotzi for those like me whose bedtimes, especiallyduring the summer months, might fall before or rightaround sundown.

In addition to the Shabbat brachas, there will be singingand crafts for kids ages toddler and above, as well as a playplace for infants so they can participate, too. The programis free and open to members and non-members alike, butreservations are appreciated by Wednesday, July 29, so wecan get a count for snacks and materials. Tikun Olam/Social Action CornerJune was a very good month for our Jewish Family Tableefforts. We thank Stanley Zoll for making our delivery inJune. Not only did Stan bring our pasta and raisins toWaltham, he also chipped in to help gather the groceriesfor some of the people receiving assistance from JewishFamily & Children's Services.

Happily, Stan had a full donation to deliver last month. Ourcollection for Jewish Family Table got a HUGE boost forJune thanks to the generosity of Zoe Rosenberg's family onthe occasion of her Bat Mitzvah. Much like our religiousschool classes have been doing for their Shabbat services, the family incorporated a pasta and raisin collection intothe centerpieces -- guess you could call that a "Bat MitzvahMitzvah!" The centerpieces yielded a more than ampledonation of both items to cover our commitment for themonth of June...we even got a bit of a head start for July!!!If you see Zoe or her parents, please thank them for theirbountiful donation...and if you have an event coming up,please think about following the Rosenberg's example.

Having said that, we still need your help to meet our Julycommitment. Due to the lack of events and the religiousschool being closed, the July donation has traditionallybeen our weakest despite it having to hold Jewish FamilyTable's clients for two months (there is no Augustdonation). We will also be looking for someone to makethe July delivery on July 12, so if you can help out, pleaseemail Jon Bloom ([email protected]) or Amy Snetsky([email protected]) or call them at 508-230-8688.Thank you for all the pasta and raisins that you gave for thefamilies that receive food from the Jewish Family Table.

During this past year, synagogue members have given inmany ways. Examples are food during the High Holidays, and clothing, toys, and gift cards during theHanukkah/Christmas season. Families who received thesegenerous gifts were from Stoughton and Canton. InNovember, Ahavath Torah Congregation members rodetheir bikes and/or sponsored the bike riders, and raised alarge sum of money for the Friends of the Alyn HospitalMitzvah of Love Day Bike Ride; the money raised throughthe bike ride helps patients at the Alyn Hospital in Israel.

In November, our synagogue members and other localresidents donated blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive, heldat our synagogue. Another way synagogue membershelped those less fortunate included the Walk for Hungerin May. They walked 5 or 10 miles, and were sponsored bytheir friends and family. The Walk for Hunger issponsored by Project Bread, and helps to feed those inneed of food. The Stoughton Food Pantry receives helpfrom Project Bread.

It is has been a very successful and rewarding year. Youhave helped many people and performed numerousmitzvahs. Thank you for all that you contributed. It iswonderful to see that our synagogue cares about otherswho are less fortunate. Thank you for a great year!!

2009 Me'ah Class FormingSouth Area Rabbis are in the midst of recruitment for thenew session of Me’ah classes which will begin in the Fallof 2009. Me’ah is an exciting two year course of adultstudy taught by renowned scholars. Me’ah is a programthat has already touched many of your friends andneighbors. Subsidized by Combined JewishPhilanthropies, Me’ah is a partnership between thecommunity, the Hebrew College and the localcongregations. In response to the economic climate and in recognition ofthe importance of serious adult education, CJP hasincreased its subsidy for first year Me’ah students andincreased significantly the amount of scholarship moneyavailable. Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When youpurchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificatesand prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can usescrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, andother essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenuefor ATC.

Our supplier acts on behalf of churches, schools and othernon profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scripfrom grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers.Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, theparticipating retailers offer a substantial discount. ATC buysthe scrip at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to familieslike yours for full face value. The discount from two to fifteenpercent or more – is our revenue.

Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sellanything. Our congregants produce revenue by making regularhousehold purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.Scrip is available at most major ATC functions.

We stock scrip in various denominations for Shaw's, Stop &Shop, Roche Brothers, Butcherie, Barnes & Noble, HomeDepot, Best Buy, Outback, and more. Go to www.atorah.orgfor a complete list of available vendors.
