Dear Friends,

For those who I have not had thepleasure of meeting, I’m ArthurMallock. My wife, Tina, and I havebeen congregants of this synagoguefor twenty years. Tina is aregistered nurse. She has beenworking for the Stoughton VisitingNursing Agency for the past 10years. I am a veterinarian. I have been working in Stoughtonfor the past 31 years. We have 2 children; David, age 19, hasbeen studying at a Yeshiva in Jerusalem for the past 2 years, and Ben, age 16, will be starting his junior year atSoutheastern Regional Technical High School in September.

For the past two years, I held the position of executive vicepresident, while Lee Elmowitz served as president. I wish totake this opportunity to extend my appreciation to Lee for histireless work for the synagogue. As president, Lee's work ethicinspired me and his unwavering dedication to the synagoguehas made an indelible impression on me and on the othermembers of the executive board. It has truly been my honorto have served with him. In addition to his role as president,Lee has, for many years, been one of the most prolificvolunteers in the congregation. He has chaired and/ororganized countless fundraising events which have been socritical to sustaining our shul. I know Lee plans to continuethese efforts. On behalf of the synagogue, I thank Lee for allhe has done for the synagogue in the past and for all that hewill continue do in the years to come.

Although most synagogues today, including our own, facemany challenges, I see a very bright future for ATC. For thisto be realized, all that needs to take place is simply for ourcongregants to truly CARE about ATC's future.

CARE ENOUGH to support fundraising events we hold, eitherby attending them or volunteering to help run them. Someof these events include Bingo at ATC which takes place everyMonday night. Also this year, Bob Bornstein will beorganizing monthly Friday night dinners. Please attend these.

CARE ENOUGH to sign up to attend minyan one or twoweeknights per month. This is also a great way to meetfellow congregants. Contact Leon Rudman or Paul Barbellfor more information.

CARE ENOUGH to attend a Friday night or Saturday morningservice.

CARE ENOUGH to keep current with your dues.

Over the next two years, I look forward to meeting all of youand to working side by side with you to keep our synagoguevibrant and growing.

Sincerely,

Arthur [email protected]

President’s Message

33Ahavath Torah CongregationAhavath Torah Congregation

From the Rabbi’s DeskYom Kippur is a full day, but its spirit is captured by the night. Although the Kol Nidreprayer itself begins just prior to sunset, when we depart from the synagogue Kol Nidreeve (Friday, September 29), the sky will be dark and our souls will be in the solitude ofevening reflection.

The final hours of Yom Kippur, during which we recite Neilah, we anticipate the nightto come. For as the sun is setting, we grasp the last hours of repentance, our finalchance to pray and to chant and to cry together with the community, seeking magic andfeeling foreboding, as children do in the dark.

We must realize the night has touched our people throughout our history. Abraham'scovenant was born at night, presaging the 'night of watching' before the liberation fromEgypt (Leil Shimurim). As Yom Kippur closes, we pray that the searching we have done in the dark willilluminate the shadows in our souls and lead us to better lives. The spirit of Neilah is well captured in these wordsby the English poet W.H. Auden:

"Dear Children, trust the night and have

Faith in tomorrow,

That these hours of ambiguity and

Indecision may be also

The hours of healing."

From my family to yours, a happy and healthy 5778.

L'shana Tova.

Rabbi Gerson South Area Religious SchoolPlease come and visit our beautifully decorated, andglowingly clean, school. Thanks so much to Bob Bornsteinfor the many hours of hard work he put into making ourschool look so wonderful.

We are working very hard to make this a very exciting, inspiring, and educational year for the children.

Here is our staffing pattern for this year:

Madeleine Lewis Pre-K through Grade 2Miriam Preil Grades 3 through 6Dr. Yale Zussman Grade 7

The Pre-K class will meet on Sunday from 9-12:00. Theolder classes will meet on Sunday from 9-12:00 andWednesday from 3:45-5:45.

Children in grades 2-7 are required to attend eight JuniorCongregation services. Four will be held on Friday nightand four on Shabbat.

On September 8th, we will hold a Family School Servicewith a Special Oneg for our kids. Please come and supportour students and their families. Junior Congregation creditwill be given for this service.

On October 4th, there will be a Family Dinner in theSukkah, which our students will have decorated.

There will no charge for families of our students and JuniorCongregation credit will be given.

There are so many plans for the upcoming holiday season. The children will compare the taste of different kinds ofhoney to see which they like best. Ice cream and bakedapples with honey will be another snack. Round challahwill be made by our students and brought home for theirfamilies to enjoy. The students will use shofars that theymake themselves, to learn the different sounds the actualshofar makes. Sukkah decoration, and enjoying a meal withtheir families in the Sukkah, will only be some of theevents planned to make the Holidays meaningful andmemorable for our kids.

Our new curriculum will include davening each sessionand giving Tzedakah after we pray together. We will keepthe money collected, and at the end of the year, we willcount it and the children will decide where to donate the

money. They will alsodecorate Tzedakah boxes tofill at home.

Torah study, Biblical andplay-Biblical history, storiesfrom the Parshahs of theweek, Israel and its historyare only some of the areaswhich will be covered.Allan Slotnick has a very special project he hasvolunteered to share with us. Watch for details.

As important as all of this is, they will learn a love ofJudaism and pride in being Jewish. This is something Ihope they will have for the rest of their lives and pass downto their children.

If you know of anyone who has children from pre-schoolto seventh grade, who might be interested in attending ourschool, please have them contact me, or send me theircontact information and I will contact them.

More information about Youth and Children's services isavailable in this Bulletin. Please contact me with anyquestions or suggestions.

I wish you all a meaningful, healthy, and Happy New Year.

B'Shalom,

Madeleine LewisLead [email protected]

"Whoever saves a single life, it is as if he had saved the whole world," according to the Talmud. But youcan do better than that, because a single blood donation can save one, two, or even three lives.

Please participate in the Red Cross Blood Drive that ATC is hosting in theSocial Hall on Wednesday, November 29, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. To makean appointment or ask questions, contact Howard Levenson at 781-344-1380 or [email protected]. You can also call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org and enter zip code 02072 in the blue box. It's OK to walk in without an appointment, but you might have a longerwait.

Bring a Red Cross Donor ID or a picture ID. And before you come, drinkextra water, have a meal, and tell your friends.

The whole process takes about an hour, perhaps less. Where else can youdo so much good in so little time?
