In recent months, the spotlight has been on Tudor Oaks’ redevelopment and its spacious new apartments. This has been an exciting year in Tudor Oaks’ history. But this is just part of the story.

One of the benefits of living at Tudor Oaks is the array of choices available. At Tudor Oaks you can enjoy the Mighty Oak Fitness Center, indoor pool, greenhouse or theater whether you reside in a contemporary unit or one of our more affordable traditional apartment homes. Everyone is part of the same dynamic community.

You may not be aware that Tudor Oaks also has expanded the continuum of services to meet your needs. The newly-rebuilt Fir wing creates a new, friendly neighborhood of assisted living apartments.

Memory care will be available, too, as for the first time in our 35-year tradition, we introduce Windsor Gardens.

For couples, this is an ideal combination of options — independent living, assisted living, memory care, short-term rehab and long-term health care. All of this is available under one roof in one beautiful 110-acre setting helping to keep couples together even if needs change.

If you have been thinking about seeing for yourself all that is happening at Tudor Oaks — wait no longer.

Tudor Oaks’ assisted living program provides the comprehensive range of supportive services that encourages an individual’s independence. That’s why there are two care areas within the assisted living program.

“It’s like family here, it’s very homey,” said Cindy Waedekin, director of supportive services/assisted living at Tudor Oaks.

Each assisted living wing at Tudor Oaks has a Certified Nursing Assistant on duty 24 hours a day, plus nursing supervision.

All residents in the assisted living and memory care apartments can participate in the activities offered throughout the campus, such a watching a movie in the Olive Wood Theatre, working on a project in the Poplar Lifestyle Room or attending a fitness class in the Mighty Oak Wellness Center.

These assisted living options provide another level of aging-in-place care for residents. For a spouse living in a Tudor Oaks independent apartment, it’s just a short walk to the assisted living area. And for the convenience of off-campus guests, the assisted living area has its own entrance lobby.

The monthly assisted living fee provides the following benefits and services:

• Full dining service (three meals a day)

• Individualized care and nursing services

• Medication assistance

• Lifestyle recreational events and special programs

• Spiritual care

• Weekly bed linen service

• Housekeeping services

• Wellness/fitness program

• Maintenance services

• All utilities (except phone and Internet services)

• Emergency call system

Perfect fit for mother and son “The level of personal care and

compassion at Tudor Oaks is outstanding,” said Ed Kutz. His mother, Barbara Kutz, moved from Beloit to an independent-living apartment at Tudor Oaks three years ago, and then moved into her current assisted-living apartment about a year ago.

“The fact that you can go from indepen-dent to assisted living to nursing care all in one place is very appealing,” Ed noted.

Before Barbara came to Tudor Oaks, Ed had built a house in the same neighborhood. “It was just a coincidence,” he explained, “but when I learned about all that is offered here, it made perfect sense for my mother to move.”

His proximity enables Ed to visit his mother at least once a week, “and I receive regular e-mails and calls from her caregivers.”

Don Hintze, whose father, Henry Hintze, lives in Windsor Gardens Memory Care, said he believes the staff sets Tudor Oaks apart from other assisted-living communities. “The level of quality and caring is No. 1,” Don said.

After touring other options, Don was impressed by all that Windsor Gardens offers. “The rooms are new, spacious and state-of-the-art,” he said, “yet it’s also the most cost effective compared to other facilities with a comparable level of care.”

Assisted living at Tudor Oaks caters to individual needs

Whether it’s lending a hand or gently taking one’s hand, helping another individual feel comfortable and independent means responding in a way that best fits the person’s needs and capabilities.

Memory Care apartments in the Tudor Oaks’ Fir wing feature ease of access to all areas.

Residents in the assisted living apartments can enjoy family style dining, left, and community living areas that feature a fireplace

and large-screen TV.

I need dependable eyes and ears, and the

caregivers at Tudor Oaks give me that peace of mind.

“I do long-distance elder care,” said Nancy Downing Hansen of Fort Collins, Colo. Her 90-year-old mother has lived at Tudor Oaks for five years. “I need dependable eyes and ears, and the caregivers at Tudor Oaks give me that peace of mind. They are so compassionate and attentive. They consistently put the residents’ needs first.”

Her mother lived in an independent living apartment on the campus before moving into an assisted living apartment two years ago. “She chose Tudor Oaks because she liked the people, the location and the large size of the apartment,” Downing Hansen said.

Her mother also has received care in the Health Center and from the rehabilitation therapists. “The seamlessness with how the residents move from one area at Tudor Oaks to another as their needs change makes planning so much easier,” Downing Hansen said. She noted that an older person’s needs can change unpredictably, so she appreciates the full range of care that is always available at Tudor Oaks.

Downing Hansen remains in close contact with Cindy Waedekin via e-mail and phone calls. “The staff always lets me know what’s going on,” she said. “They’re amazing at what they do there.”

Peace of mind for daughter“The wonderful care provided at Tudor

Oaks gives me a great deal of comfort, especially since I do not live nearby,” said Wendy Hardy, who resides in Kansas. Her mother and stepfather, Nat and Kees Dekker, moved into an independent-living apartment at Tudor Oaks in 2006.

In December 2010, Kees moved into the Tudor Oaks health center, and last summer, Nat moved into an assisted-living apartment in the Windsor House wing.

Her mother enjoys the new apartment. “She had no problems adjusting to it, and it’s such a beautiful space,” Wendy said. “Mother can walk over to see Kees without having to go outside. She spends time with him every day.”

Nat also fills her day with the many activities at Tudor Oaks. “She enjoys the music programs and speakers that come to the Olive Wood Theatre,” Wendy said, “and the cooking and craft projects. She loves the people that work there and calls them all her friends.”

Wendy visits about once a month or so and describes her mother’s and stepfather’s caregivers as “dedicated, wonderful people who are patient, loving and well-trained.”

Wendy has peace of mind knowing her mother is happy. “Since Mother and Kees can’t be with family, this is the next best place,” she said.

Healthy approaches to feeling better, stronger

Healthy aging is the focus at Tudor Oaks. Residents have a variety of on-campus options for improving their health and fitness, including a recently constructed wellness center, professional rehabilitation programs and 24-hour care at the Health Center.

Mighty Oak Wellness CenterThe new $1 million wellness center inside the Community

Square includes the Aquatic Center with pool, whirlpool and locker rooms; Muscle Wood Fitness Room filled with state-of-the-art machines designed for seniors, and the Laurel Pine Gym for fitness classes and dance groups.

“It’s so convenient for the residents, and it’s a beautiful center,” said Lisa Grimmer, Tudor Oaks’ wellness director. Many of the residents head to the pool for aquatic exercise classes, to swim laps or to play with their visiting grandchildren. Another popular attraction is Wii bowling and tennis, offered in the gym.

Grimmer and her assistants teach a variety of exercise classes and give individualized orientations on the fitness equipment.

“I love the fact that even though I’m getting older, I’m able to keep getting stronger,” said Linda Stahelin, a Tudor Oaks resident who regularly attends the fitness classes and works out with the equipment.

The wellness center staff also plans activities for residents in the assisted living and memory care apartments.

Rehabilitation servicesThe physical, occupational and speech therapists on the Tudor

Oaks rehab team offer services to individuals in the Health Center and residents of the independent and assisted living apartments.

“The residents like having their therapy done here instead of having to go to a hospital or other facility,” said Cynthia Traczek, the rehabilitation services program director. “We can treat all types of neurological, orthopedic and cardiac conditions.”

Depending on the individual’s needs, the rehab team designs activities to increase strength, mobility, feeding abilities and speech. “We do a plan of care around their discharge goals to get patients to their highest level of independence,” Traczek said.

Therapy may be done in the rehab room or in the wellness center. Activities are geared to what the patient is able to do, so rehab work may include cooking, crafting, gardening or even bocce ball.

Health CenterThe Health Center provides highly skilled, state-of-the-art

nursing care 24 hours a day.

“We have 61 beds, so it’s small and intimate,” said Maryann Ward, the director of nursing at Tudor Oaks.

The Health Center cares for residents needing long-term or short-term care. Private and double rooms are available, and all rooms offer cable television without an additional fee.

A lounge with a fireplace and TV, the sunroom and the outside garden area are welcoming spaces for residents and their visitors.

A new addition to the Health Center is the satellite kitchen in the main dining room, which ensures fresh, hot meals are served, Ward explained.

“There is a lot of involvement with residents and their families,” she said. Families appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing their loved ones are being cared for in a familiar setting, and a spouse or friends who live at Tudor Oaks can easily visit Health Center residents.
