NEWARK - Just days away from a potential strikeby railroad workers, NJ Transit and union officialsmet for hours Tuesday but reached no accord.
While they walked away without a deal, one unionofficial called the morning and afternoon talks a“good day” of negotiations.
Steve Burkert, general chairman of SMART-TDLocal 60, said the unions brought multiple new offersto the bargaining table, seemingly addressing a state-ment released by NJ Transit on Monday night claim-ing the unions dug their heels in the sand.
“It was a good day, negotiation-wise. Both sideshave homework to do,” Burkert said. “We had multi-ple proposals going back and forth across the table —proposals and counter-proposals. Tomorrow’s a goodday to run the numbers again.”
The two sides will meet again on Thursday, he said.NJ Transit’s monthly board meeting is scheduled
for this morning at the agency’s Newark headquar-ters. A strike or lockout has been threatened for Sun-day.
