ARTS COUNCILVOLUNTEER COUNCIL

Everything we do at the Arvada Center is done withthe goal of providing a true, direct experience with

the arts. This past summer we were recognized by bothour peers and our patrons in two distinct and veryimportant ways. First, we were recognized at the annualColorado Theatre Guild “Henry Awards” for Outstand-ing Production of a Musical (Ragtime), and for Out-standing Season for a Theater Company. Both of theseawards reflect most brightly on the staff and crew hereat the Arvada Center. Nobody puts on a better show orseason than the Arvada Center. Second, we were recog-nized for excellence by our education patrons with arecord-breaking summer camp season. The value andpassion that we instill in our education programs isappreciated by parents and students alike.

This fall, we have two new, exciting additions tothe Center: one is the new look and feel of our MainStage Theater. After 36 years, we have installed newtheater seats thanks to the generosity of the City ofArvada. We also took advantage of the downtime in theTheater to rebuild the front of our stage, install a per-manent sound booth behind the center section of seat-ing, and refurbish our acoustic wall at the back of thetheater. These projects were made to the Theater withone thought in mind – you! We hope they enhanceyour theater experience.

The second exciting addition to the Arvada Centerthis fall is the premiere of the Arvada Center TheaterAcademy Company. The Company is designed for talented youth (ages 13 – 18) to participate in a small-enrollment, in-depth immersion program of theaterinstruction. The program will allow students to interactwith professional directors, choreographers, actors andtechnical experts in an authentic theater environment. It is the type of advanced theater program that has beenmissing in our region and we are excited to add it toour offerings.

Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention avery special anniversary here at the Center. Pianist Jeffrey Siegel will be celebrating his 25th season ofKeyboard Conversations beginning October 3rd. If youhave never seen a Keyboard Conversation, you mustgive it a try; it is a wonderfully entertaining experience.

Thanks to all of you for helping make the ArvadaCenter such a special place!

Sincerely,

Clark Johnson®

Who would have thought, 109years after he finished the script,

Mark Twain’s witty satire would finallypremiere on Broadway? If he were notdead, Twain would likely have some-thing humorous to say about the expe-rience of getting good reviews, butthere’s no need to speculate about whatthis quintessential American writermight have said, when we have such abrilliant example of what he did say.

With the help of noted playwrightDavid Ives, Twain’s script shines withwall-to-wall volleys that match GeorgeBernard Shaw’s deft use of a pen that ismightier than the sword, strippingaway pretense like Zorro surgically dis-robes the high and mighty, in this casethe banking establishment.

Artistic producer Rod Lansberrysees an interesting contrast in this.“You can’t get more Americana thanMark Twain; it’s fascinating to see howhe uses farce for commentary on every-day events in a way that everyone canunderstand.”

Ever since last autumn’s worldwide“Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations, there has been an increased focus on therole that private banks play in globalevents. At this point—after revelationsconcerning chain-of-title issues withmortgages, robo-signings in foreclosureproceedings, and the manipulation of

interest rates by Earth’s biggestbanks—there’s no question regardingthe relevance of Twain’s observations; infact, we see how little has changedfrom Twain’s time to our own.

Only someone with Twain’s giftscould make this state-of-affairs funny, but it was essential to his spirit that hedid so. On the heels of a bankruptcyand in the midst of a speaking tour ofEurope to recoup, Twain’s youngestdaughter died. After a long spell ofdark days, old Sam Clemons lifted him-self up by his bootstraps and wrote hisway out of the pain, in his inimitablefashion, with razor sharp repartee andthoughtful insights, all designed tomake us laugh.

The protagonist of Twain’s farce isJean-François Millet, a French painter,well-known in the latter half of the19th century. Despite his talent, Millethas trouble selling his paintings. Twaininvents a premise “to explain” howMillet becomes prominent, using thisfictional account to offer his wisdom, all served on a liberally employed slap-stick.

Millet and his students, as well ashis friends, find themselves at themercy of Bastien André, a “picturedealer and usurer,” making Is He Dead?a comedic antidote of sorts to Puccini’spaean to artists—the tragic La

Bohème—where, in a 180-degree rever-sal of outcomes, Twain’s artists find away to triumph over those who have achokehold on their most basic needs.

Twain takes two parallel, yet differ-ent, angles in building his social com-mentary: first, choosing Millet, whowas a champion of common folks; and, second, through André, who representswealth from “money making money,”not from the creation of goods andservices. In the U.S. today, 60% of oureconomy is attributable to “financialservices,” while manufacturing has beenoutsourced overseas to increase profitmargins for transnational corporations.

Millet’s most famous painting isThe Gleaners (1857), which portraysthree peasant women in the fields.Gleaners pick what is left after the har-vest of the owners and their laborers(who are seen at the back of the paint-ing), not unlike the urban poor whoscour dumpsters for leftovers. At thetime, Millet’s work shifted the focus inthe art world from the rich and promi-nent to the dispossessed.

Twain builds on Millet’s pictorialsocial commentary in the play’s dia-logue. As Millet’s friend AgamemnonBuckner (called “Chicago” by the othercharacters) says of André in Act 1,Scene 1, “Any picture dealer’s hard-hearted enough, but to add usury!

Director’s notesRight now, across the country, millions of Americansare asking themselves the question that Mark Twainasked himself when writing Is He Dead? in 1898 inVienna, and that Jean-Francois Millet asks himself inthat play: What will it take to get people to value mywork? When Mark Twain was asking himself this, hewas in the midst of a terrible depression.

Luckily for us, the funniest comedy comes from pain, and Twain wrote a play that explores this questionwith the satire and humor he’s known for. David Ives has said, “It’s like LaBoheme meets Tootsie, or Some Like It Hot times two.” And Time Out New York

points out that in someways, Is He Dead? is anancestor of South Park in theway Twain uses Millet, a real,well-known figure in the artsworld, as the centerpiece ofthe action. Not bad compar-isons for a 114-year-old play.

Twain expertly satirizes theways society places value onpeople based on ideas, notactuality. He perfectly cap-tures what it feels like to bean artist at times, although tolimit this play to that descrip-tion is missing the point. Heperfectly captures what itfeels like to be alive; whatperson hasn’t asked, “Whatwill it take to get people to

notice what I have to offer?” Or “When will I be appreciated?” Or, like anotherfamous Twain character explores, “What will people say when I am gone?”

Painful questions? Absolutely. But as you’ll see, these painful questions really dolead to some of the funniest comedy you will ever see.

Michael Perlman

A r t s c e n t r i c F a l l 2 0 1 2 | a r v a d a c e n t e r . o r g | 7Might as well cross a grizzly bear with ashark.” Later, André responds, “It doesn’tbecome you to ride the high horse withme. Nor any of you. Paupers! Every-thing you’ve got is mine—bought withmy money.”

André is right about it being hismoney. Inhabitants of all nations of theworld use private bank notes to convertlabor into value, and almost all of thesenotes come into circulation with a debtattached to it, in the form of interest onbonds that nations must pay to thebankers to create what was once theirown sovereign currency.Admitting to such thingsaloud was part and parcelof the bravado of the rob-ber barons of the late19th century, so Twainneeded no hyperbole onAndré’s part; today, how-ever, anyone in businesswho admits to suchthoughts faces anunfriendly job marketafter they are terminated.

For those who followthe various scandals thathave surfaced in the pastfew months, it’s easy seethat Twain’s plot is attimely today as it was in the late 19thcentury. Given the subject matter of IsHe Dead?, it’s not surprising that fund-ing dried up for Twain’s play in 1898,soon after The London Times announced itwas going to premiere on the West Endand Broadway.

We thank Mark Twain scholar Shel-ley Fisher Fishkin, who discovered theplay in the archives of the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley, and Ives, whoedited and adapted it, for bringing thisforgotten gem to the stage at such a crit-ical time. Like Shaw, Twain serves up aserious subject in great comedic fashion.

Thieves by their very nature areuntrustworthy. Even when work-

ing together, there’s always the nag-ging undercurrent of “every man forhimself.” So what happens when acouple of scammers end up competingagainst one another, bilking well-to-do women out of excess funds, on theFrench Riviera? That’s what thismusical—based on the 1988 film bythe same name, itself a remake of Bed-time Story (1964), starring DavidNiven, Marlon Brando, and ShirleyJones—endeavors to find out withabsurd aplomb.

It’s all in fun. If any reservationsthe audience may have about thegoings on are not dispelled by the bot-tomless wealth of the victims, whateverreticence remains is surely cast away bythe sheer chutzpah of the swindlers:Lawrence Jameson, a debonair confi-dence man who is comfortable imper-sonating jet-setting movers and shakers(think exiled royalty), and Freddy Ben-son, a goofy, rough-edged Americanwho uses the ploy of “a dear ailing eld-erly grandmother” to prey on theempathy and neediness of wealthy wid-ows and wayfaring trophy wives.

The final, and perhaps strongest, catalyst for a night of mayhem andmisrule is provided by Jeffrey Lane(book) and David Yazbek (music andlyrics), whose production numbers sellthe premise as a farce, forcing us, if allelse fails, to leave any remaining con-cerns for the fleeced aside. Whenmoney is no object, we are free tolaugh at the foibles of the principalswho, like ourselves, ignore all senseand embrace whatever delusions theirhearts desire. Right from the top,Lawrence tells us he’s “giving themwhat they want … specifically whatthey want, all tied up with a bow.”

What brings the well heeled tosuch a state that the likes of Lawrenceand Freddy find fertile ground for theirlaughable ploys? According to Lenore,

one of Lawrence’s marks, it’s “an escapefrom the ennui.” Beneath the surface ofthe elegant scene in the Côte-d’Azuridyll of Beaumont-sur-Mer, things aremuch the same as in our own back-yard, with folks looking for a little funand comfort to break the routine.

Yet, a garden spot on the Mediter-ranean makes this scenario so muchmore delicious! Much like thecomedic staples in the theatres andcinemas during the aftermath of thestock market crash of ’29, so the hard-ships of today’s economic contractionmake the fluff of elite playgrounds anattractive daydream. In such an atmos-phere, as Cole Porter so aptly once putit, “Anything Goes!”

As artistic producer and showdirector Rod Lansberry sees it, DirtyRotten Scoundrels “is one of the fewmusicals out there written for purefun! I like to see it as ‘James Bondmeets the Pink Panther.’ Intrigue andcomedy—that’s what I was lookingfor! No one is taken advantage of tothe point where they’re hurt; in fact, they’re almost willing to be taken. Weall know that money doesn’t buy hap-piness, yet it seems we’d all like to tryand find out if that’s true for us!”

“It’s just like the opening number

says, ‘Give Them What They Want.’That’s really what it is: they want thefun and excitement that their lives aremissing; they want the attention andthey’re willing to pay for it.”

We might even imagine a set ofhonorable thieves, if only for a moment.Somewhere along the way, after Chris-tine Colgate arrives and as Lawrenceand Freddy jockey for position, the ruleschange and all bets are off!

Like Molière’s zany mockeries, noauthorities are to be trusted: doctors arequacks and the police are in the protec-tion racket, much like in Casablanca, when Rick helps Laszlo escape andLieutenant Renault tells his men to“round up the usual suspects.” In Beau-mont-sur-Mer, life is a game of chance;it’s hard to tell where the casino endsand life begins—or even where onepersona turns into the next.

In the end, even Lawrence,Freddy, and Christine get what theywant, which leads to an interestingquestion: In what ways are we likethese three scoundrels? That’s thebeauty of a well-turned farce: we getto try on these roles as well, likestanding in front of a fun house mir-ror, and considering both the hilariousand grotesque possibilities. As Lans-berry puts it, “There’s not a judgmentcall in the show. It’s just fun. Thetwist at the end is priceless.”

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE:Colorado Artists and Curators

September 13- November 11, 2012Main Gallery

From Käthe Kollwitz, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo,Louis Bourgeois, Agnes Martin, Judy Chicago, Cindy Sher-man and Kiki Smith, the world of art has been significantlyinfluenced by exceptional female artists. This fall, theArvada Center is taking a regional perspective on notablewomen artists of Colorado. The Center invited seven ofColorado’s leading female curators to recommend “Womenof Influence” from their corresponding regions. We reliedon these curators’ expert knowledge of their respectiveregions, and left the definition of “influence” up to them.Generally, “Influence” is most understood as having aneffect on something or someone. From their recommenda-tions, the Center then selected artists from each region tocreate an overview of influential female artists of the state. This show boasts a wide variety of media and concepts, andwill feature installations, photography, video, prints, paint-ings and ceramics. This exhibition gives other curators, artsprofessionals, community supporters and Coloradans anopportunity to see the work of these great artists from theirunique perspectives and learn more about the curators whoselected them. Some of the artists in the show are teachers,

all have prolific careers both in and out of the state; overallthe work is inspiring. In a gallery guide dating back to the1989 Arvada Center exhibition ‘Significant ColoradoWomen Artists’ Lydia M. Peña, Chair of the ExhibitionCommittee stated, “Like its predecessors, this exhibitionwill have its critics, both men and women. We on the exhi-bition committee acknowledge that ‘Significant ColoradoWomen Artists’ is necessarily incomplete, thus providinglimitless opportunities for others to organize representativeexhibitions on women artists, so that eventually the oeuvreof all of us is well represented.” Now in 2012, the ArvadaCenter continues the tradition of featuring prominentfemale artists of the state that began all those years ago.

INTIMATE DIALOGUE:Seven Women, Seven Voices

September 13-November 11, 2012Upper Gallery

Abstracted intimacy is the specific uniting factor in thisexhibition of seven women artists. The seven artists fea-tured in this exhibition are well-known in the Denver artscene, exhibiting at local galleries regularly. Intimate Dia-logue artist Theresa Anderson explained the dynamicsbetween these artists and their works: “I see us intertwinedas mentors, exhibiting together, collaborators in organiza-tions that support and encourage new paradigms of think-ing in the visual arts. I am attracted to the works of theseartists not because their work is similar to mine; in fact, Ithink the opposite. Each has her own visual vocabulary. But, this group is invested in art-making as a way of lifewith an intense interaction with the contemporary andalternative art community with an extreme regard for risk-taking and a high quality of work.” Seven themes describethe work in this exhibition, SCALE, BODY, RECIPROC-ITY, TRANSPARENCY, VULNERABILITY, PERCEP-TION and SPACE. These artists will express these themesin their own unique way, and will beckon the viewer toexplore what intimacy means to them.

INTRODUCING THE ARVADA CENTER

THEATER ACADEMY COMPANYThe Arvada Center has the reputa-

tion of offering the finest perform-ance based classes for young artists inthe Rocky Mountain region. TheFront Range Youth Symphony (FRYS)and the Arvada Center Dance Acad-emy are well established and haveoffered students the best educationaltraining in their respective genres formany years. Theater classes have con-tinued to grow in demand and threeyears ago we added the popular TeenIntensive Theater program to our sum-mer arts camps. The Teen Intensivemirrored our summer Main Stagemusicals and the teens had the oppor-tunity to perform shows like All ShookUp, Hairspray and this past summer’shit musical Legally Blonde. Observingthe success of this program, TeenIntensive director Gavin Mayer andEducation Coordinator, Lisa Leafgreencame up with the idea to launch a yearround program. With some extensivethought and planning the ArvadaCenter Theater Academy Companywas born.

This exciting new program offersthe opportunity for teens who areinterested in acting careers to workalongside the Center’s award winningdirectors, choreographers, actors, designers and technical staff to learnthe art of theater. The academy stu-dents will stage an actor’s showcaseand a musical production from start tofinish as they complete classes in audi-tioning, scene study, character work, design, technical application andmore. Gavin Mayer who will also over-see the company had this to say aboutthis exciting new program “The The-

ater Academy Company is a greataddition to the outstanding trainingstudents are already receiving here indance and instrumental music. Ourhope is that the academy will roundout the performing arts experience for

teens at the Arvada Center.” Go to our website to read more

Support the Arvada Center on December 4, 2012!

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, December 4, 2012 toparticipate in the third annual Colorado Gives Day andsupport the award-winning Arvada Center!

The Community First Foundation, an Arvada-basedfoundation dedicated to increasing community generosityand involvement, will be hosting the third annual ColoradoGives Day on Tuesday, December 4, 2012. Through Giv-ingFirst.org, this 24 hour initiative is designed to encour-age Coloradans to give online and help raise as muchmoney as possible for local nonprofits in a single day.

To help increase the total amounts distributed to chari-ties, FirstBank – Colorado’s largest locally owned bank – isagain underwriting all processing fees and offering prizesand incentives. Last year, Coloradans made an astoundingdemonstration of support for local nonprofits by donating$12.4 million on Colorado Gives Day.

With only 50% of revenue coming from tuition andticket sales, your contribution to the Arvada Center pro-vides essential financial resources for our programs thatserve nearly 350,000 visitors each year.

Support the Arvada Center by participating in ColoradoGives Day. Or, don’t just pencil us in – make your 2012-2013 Friends of the Center pledge today for your gift onDecember 4th! See the inserted envelope for more details.
