Tuesday Communion Service After many years of having a Tuesday communion service at St Mary's we have made the decision that with falling numbers we should stop this service with immediate effect. This service has been an important part of the worshipping life of St Mary's and I want to thank all those who have run services over the years and those who have supported this service. While it is sad that this service has now ceased we also recognise that we have many new things happening at St Mary's which have begun in recent years. Rev. David Tyler

Toddlers at St Mary’s All families with pre-school aged children are welcome to join in the fun at our toddler group in St Mary’s, Freeland. There are many toys, a craft table and we have a Christian themed story every week. The singing section is brought to life using puppets, props and musical instruments. We provide snacks, drinks, home baked cakes, fresh coffee and tea while we have a chat and share time together, all for a small donation of 50p. The group runs during term time on Thursdays from 10am to 11.30am and everyone is very welcome. If you would like to know more then please contact Helen on 882044 or David on 881270.

Bible Fun Club ‘BFC’ is a group for parents, carers and young children who meet once a month for games, crafts and snacks with a Christian theme. We meet on a Thursday during term time, at the Village Hall from 3.30 - 4.30pm (30 May, 4 July, 3 Oct, 28 Nov)

Letter from the Curate:

Dear friends,

One of the more curious things I have been challenged to do in recent years is write my own obituary. Sobering, to say the least - and certainly not the sort of thing we might do on a normal day. It did, though, make me stop - and think about how I’d like to be remembered when my time does eventually come. What sort of legacy do I want to leave? Indeed, what would other people say about me when I’m gone?!

Another way of looking at this is to speculate about the inscriptions that will one day adorn our headstones. Sir Christopher Wren’s, in his magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral, isn’t at all bad: Lector, si monumentum requiris circumspice (‘Reader, if you seek his monument look around you’). Who wouldn’t want to be remembered like that?

Less endearing, perhaps, is the epitaph of lawyer, Sir John Strange (1696-1754): ‘Here lies an honest lawyer, that is Strange’. Or what about John MacFarlane, whose rather short-sighted benefactors were seemingly blind to the ambiguity of their inscription: ‘Erected to the memory of John MacFarlane. Drowned in the Waters of Leith. By a few affectionate friends’? And then there’s always the popular 18th Century parson who,

Continued…………. name now illegible, is still fondly remembered in these doubtless well-meaning (however ambiguous) words: ‘He was literally a Father to all the children in the Parish’!!

As legacies go, however, Jesus of Nazareth takes some beating. Whatever else we might or might not think about him, we can’t ignore the incredible impact this one man left on the world, reverberating even now some 2000 years later. There aren’t many who can claim a worldwide following of millions. Nor are there many who can point to landscape after landscape, in nation after nation, peppered with buildings erected in their honour. And who else has had the very dating conventions of this world (B.C. and A.D) calibrated according to when they were born?

Christians believe, of course, that Jesus achieved all this uniquely without any need for a headstone at all - the reason being that, following the most hideous of deaths at the hands of Roman executioners, he was resurrected back to new life. And the reason he was able to do that is because he was no ordinary man, but God himself – the very giver of life - in human form, as so many of our Christmas carols reminded us some months ago.

These are quite extraordinary claims and some of us will be pretty sceptical of it all. To be honest, I wouldn’t blame you. After all, this sort of thing just doesn’t sit well with the demythologised rationalist worldview within which our dominant culture has been steeped for generations. But what if there was actually something in it? What if this man Jesus somehow really was God and did come back from the other side of death? What if those who have discovered the living, life-changing reality of Jesus in the here-and-now are not deluded? The implications would be of truly cosmic proportions – not many would argue with that. But how many of us have ever seriously considered the possibility of this being real? How many of us - honestly - have simply rejected it all out of hand without at least checking it out for ourselves?

I’m not wanting to coerce anyone here. If Jesus really is as real as many of us have found him to be, he doesn’t need that sort of help. However, let me at least invite us all to consider whether we have, actually, ever seriously given him a fighting chance. If not, can we ever be sure we won’t end up with ‘If only…’ somewhere on our own tombstones when our own time does eventually come?

Phil Cooke, Curate

FROM THE REGISTERS AT ST MARY THE VIRGIN

Baptisms: Eliza Bliss 21st April 2013 Daniel Hewer 5th May 2013

Funerals: Ken Bingham 23rd April 2013

Interment of Ashes of Ken Bingham - 26th April 2013 Please make a note in your diary: the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust sponsored cycle ride (StRide) takes place on Saturday 14th September 2013. Whether you are able to take part in the StRide, (ie walk or cycle), act as a welcomer at one of the churches or support a StRider, your contribution will be greatly appreciated. Sponsor forms will be available in July.

StRiders can easily sign up sponsors on the JustGiving website. Sponsors who pay income tax may increase the amount by gift aiding their donations. All that is required on the sponsorship form is the initial, surname, address including postcode of both the individual Sponsor and the StRider or Welcomer.

Details of the money raised by churches in 2012 can be found online at www.ohct.org.uk/bike.htm In 2012, the StRide raised over £120,000 which was divided between the Trust and the Churches or Chapels chosen by those who took part in the StRide. In Freeland, 3 StRiders raised £939.20 and 21 visitors were welcomed.

The Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust was formed in 1964 to provide financial help with repairs to churches of all denominations in Oxfordshire, encouraging wider interest in them and raising funds for these purposes. Since the Trust was formed, a total of more than £3 million has been given in the way of grants to help churches with essential repairs. St Mary’s Church, Freeland received £3000 recently. In 2011/12 the Trust gave £172,000 in grants to 42 churches (Anglican, RC, Methodist, Baptist and URC) in Oxfordshire for repairs and refurbishment. John Fox

SUNDAY MASS is at 10.00am with a Childrens’ Liturgy during Mass (& SATURDAY for Sunday 7.30pm) Mass also Mondays 5.30pm, Tuesdays 7.30pm, Wednesdays 9.30am, Thursdays 12 Noon, Fridays 6.00am

CORPUS CHRISTI is the Church’s annual day of thanksgiving for the gift from Jesus of himself in the bread and wine of Holy Communion – his Body and Blood. This takes place on Sunday 2nd June and there will be a special Procession at the end of Mass followed by Benediction. Later that day there is a bigger event in Oxford to mark this special day. It begins with a Procession from at the Oratory Church of St Aloysius at 2:30pm; it stops at Blackfriars at 3pm when there is a Sermon and then concludes at the University Catholic Chaplaincy with Benediction at 4pm, the same hour in which Pope Francis has asked us to pray together for the Year of Faith.

FATHER MARTIN’S SPONSORED BIBLE READ will take place on Saturday 15th June. He will try to read the Bible for 6 hours with a 5 minute break every hour and a break for lunch. You will have to pay £5 to guess where he gets to when he finishes the day – or collapses beforehand! – and the person who is nearest will win 10% of the takings. All the profit will go to pay for the new Heating for the Church which is going to cost us at least £11,000.

OUR CHILDREN CELEBRATE their FIRST COMMUNION on Sunday 30th June. This is a very happy day for them when many of their family will gather to support them and celebrate with them. It is also our Patronal Festival – the Feast of St Peter & St Paul – which will mean a double celebration.

SAFETY! OUR ANNUAL MEETING last month included a discussion of safety for children in our Car Park. We are looking at the possibility of signs at the entrance warning people to take care, but also Father Martin has since wondered whether a speed hump at the entrance would be a very effective way of curbing speed and increasing safety, especially since one could be fitted for less than £500. He would like to hear your views please.

ADVANCE NOTICE of our SUMMER BBQ AND FETE on Sunday 14th JULY from 11.00am till 3.00pm. Please note this in your Diary. The Gardens will be open that day during the Fete, and also on the day before – Saturday 13th July – from 2.00pm till 5.00pm

OUR NEW POPE FRANCIS continues to do some interesting things. He has decided not to live in the Papal Apartments but to live in the Hostel for Clergy where the Cardinals stayed whilst they were electing him. It means that he mixes every day with all sorts of people and not just with those who have official appointments with him. If you want to be kept up to date with what he is doing, try ROME REPORTS on the internet http://www.romereports.com/palio/index.php?newlang=english Please keep praying for him and his work.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL LISA’S NOTES FROM THE MEETING HELD ON 13th MAY 2013

The meeting on 13th May included the Parish Council’s Annual Meeting at which Peter Newell was re-elected as Chairman and Robert Crocker was re-elected as Vice-Chairman for the coming year.

CRF Update The CRF Project continues to progress well with much of the building now in place. Following the recent resignation of Ray Tollady, the Council appointed Andrew Bird as the Contract Administrator to oversee the completion of the project.

Extra fund-raising is still needed as the one of the grant conditions is that photo-voltaic panels (costing £11,500) are to be installed on the roof at some point, for which the Parish Council does not have sufficient funds. Any help with funding for these panels would be greatly appreciated.

Sewer repair and road resurfacing work on Wroslyn Road As you are no doubt aware by now, Thames Water are carrying out some essential repair work to the sewer along a section of Wroslyn Road and Blenheim Lane. This has meant that Blenheim Lane and Wroslyn Road have had to be closed to through traffic whilst the work is completed. Highways will then resurface a section of Wroslyn Road from The Green down to Blenheim Lane immediately after the completion of the sewer repair work. Inevitably this work will cause some disruption with the road being closed and unfortunately this is unavoidable, but I would urge everyone to pay attention to the diversions in place and to exercise patience, understanding and co-operation whilst this essential maintenance work is carried out. Please think ahead and plan your journey – information is being placed on the village notice boards and website at www.freelandoxon.com as and when we receive it.

Change of meeting dates As the May Parish Council meeting was held quite late in the month due to the bank holiday, the Council meeting dates for June and July have been changed to Monday 10th June and Monday 8th July.

Best Kept Garden Competition This competition will be held again this year and front gardens only will be judged by members of Witney Horticultural Society. The dates for the judging will be Wednesday 12th June and Wednesday 14th August. There is no need to do anything to enter the competition. The judges look at every front garden in Freeland and judge what they can see from the entrance way looking in – they will not enter your property. So good luck to everyone and get those hedges pruned and flowers dead-headed if you want to be in with a chance of winning!

Allotments Council approved the spending of up to £500 to install water troughs and a notice board at the allotments, and the costs of these will be met from the funds received from the allotment rents.

TUESDAY CLUB - 7th May

In 2002, Ali Collett and some friends from Cumnor went out to Malawi to see a project that they were supporting to build a well for a small community. The poverty was heart breaking as most adults life span is around 40, so most of the children are orphans, and the older ones were looking after the young ones. They only had the clothes they were wearing.

Our next meeting on June 4th is at Beryl Dawes’ house for a cream tea and Bring and Buy. Margaret Bult for Katie Shelton

MMR CATCH-UP PROGRAMME A national catch-up programme to increase MMR vaccination uptake in children and teenagers was announced on Thursday 25 April by Public Health England (PHE), NHS England and the Department of Health. The aim of the programme is to prevent measles outbreaks by vaccinating as many unvaccinated and partially vaccinated 10-16 year olds as possible in time for the next school year.

If your child is aged 10-16 years old and has not received the necessary vaccinations you should receive a letter inviting you to make an appointment. If you have not re-ceived a letter and you think your child may need vaccinating please contact your GP surgery as soon as possible.

Patients over the age of 16 who feel that they may be at risk of contracting measles may request the MMR vaccination.

FREELAND GARDENING CLUB

In spite of the changeable weather recently Spring has at last arrived and gardens are blooming again! At the meeting on 22nd April, Philip Aubury gave a very good talk on ‘Grow Your Own Vegetables’. He encouraged rotation planting and keeping a list of what one planted and where each year. He said he tried new varieties of a few crops each season. Growing runner beans up a wigwam rather than in a long row made picking and weeding easier. He grew peas in long rows with staggered planting of early and late varieties. Hopefully some of his advice will help produce better crops in future years.

A coachful of members and guests enjoyed a superb day at the Malvern Show on 11th May. The display tents were breathtaking and also offered respite from the few showers of rain. There was so much else to see that the day sped by. Many people came home with interesting new plants to plant in their own gardens.

The title of the meeting on Monday 20th May at 7. 30pm in Freeland Hall is another of those strange ones that make us wonder what it will all be about. Stuart Phillips has named the talk ‘Don’t Throw it Away, it’s in the Bag’.

We were sorry to hear about the death of one of our first members, George Voller and sent our sympathy to his family members. A few Gardening Club members attended his funeral.

The proposed trip to Cottesbrooke Hall is no longer possible and has been replaced by a day visit to Saville Gardens in Windsor Great Park on 6th July. There are 35 acres of ornamental gardens and woodland including National Collections and rare species. The cost will be £17 for members and £19 for visitor, Booking at meetings or ring Brian Wildblood on 01993 883968. Visitors are very welcome at all outings and meetings.

We all look forward to the Open Gardens event in Freeland over the weekend of 29th/30th June which will include a flower festival in St Mary’s Church and a trip around the allotments as well as many gardens. Displays around the village and in the Grapevine will give the full information about the weekend.

The usual Bring and Buy Plant Sale and refreshments will be held at all meetings in Freeland Hall.

For further information about the Freeland Gardening Club, contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd or telephone 881420.

The season is over – now what are we going to do with our weekends??

The season finished on a high as the FIRSTS went on a dazzling end of season run to jump up into the middle of the Senior League Premier Division table to record one of the highest finishes in the club’s history. Richard Trigg and Simon Hole can be very happy with their work, and with a youthful looking side the future is bright.

The RESERVES also showed some good form towards the end of the season as they picked up three wins in a row before losing out on a top four finish on the last day of the season as they lost at Adderbury.

The A TEAM also had last day drama, as they survived by the finest of margins in Witney & District Division 1, pipping local rivals Hanborough to survival on goal difference.

Finally, the YEOMAN added some silverware to the trophy cabinet as they powered their way to win the Ridgeway Cup. They beat a strong Northway Reserves side 3-1 in a masterful performance at Abingdon Town to lift the trophy. The Sunday side also won their last three league games of the season to secure sixth place in the UTVL Division 2.

At times the 2012/13 season has been a struggle for the club, but everyone rallied together to ensure all the teams stayed in their divisions and with the CRF taking shape the club will now have a fantastic chance to grow. We will be looking to start up youth sides again for the coming season, so if you are keen to get involved in this please let me ([email protected] – 07917 631742) or any of our committee members know.

For anyone who would like to attend our AGM will be held on 10th June 2013 at the Methodist Chapel, 7pm start. If you are keen to join the club, manage a side or help out in any way then please come down and put your name forward. We will be celebrating a few days before that at our Presentation Evening at Witney Lakes on 7th June 2013, it isn’t too late to get yourself a ticket for the bargain price of £20, please speak to me or Jon Langford if you wish to attend.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who has supported the club this season, it has been a rollercoaster ride at times, but we wouldn’t want it any other way – roll on September!! www.freelandfc.co.uk Matthew Hardy

The theme for this term is “On the move”. We will be looking at all forms of transport such as cars, buses, boats, trains, airplanes, bicycles, horses and of course, walking! We will be out in the garden making the most of our lovely outdoor space. The children will be tending to the seeds they have planted and keeping the beds tidy by weeding them regularly.

We are planning a walk in the woods for all the children and the families who attend Pre-school which will end with a picnic. We continue to welcome all parents/carers into the pre-school to read the story, cook or sing. The pre-school would like to say a big thank you to all the parents/carers who have helped this year particularly with the regular cooking sessions.

We are now taking on new admissions for September. If you would like your child to attend in the future, please ring us (between 8.45am and 3.15pm) on 882945, or email [email protected] to give us your details and help us to plan ahead. Our admissions policy sets out the criteria by which places are allocated and is available to read on our website: www.freelandpreschool.org

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2013 Thank you very much from Christian Aid to everyone who donated money over CA Week this year. The theme of this year’s collection was ‘Bite Back at Hunger’. In Britain, appallingly we throw away many thousands of £s worth of perfectly good food a year while in many countries people do not know where their next meal is coming from! Christian Aid aims to help people to help themselves by not just donating money but by giving people the means to grow their own food etc. I am immensely grateful to all 30 or so collectors, many of whom have helped year after year. Without their willing help it would make the organising of this event so much more difficult. The result of the collection will be posted on the notice boards and in next month’s Grapevine. Thank you Janet Dalton

COUNCIL TAX SCAM WARNING Residents are warned to be on their guard against bogus callers advising them that their Council Tax bands may be too high. These callers are offering to work on your behalf for a fee to obtain a reduction.

This is a scam, which is operating across the country, and the District Council is currently receiving reports of callers contacting residents in West Oxfordshire. If you wish to appeal against your council tax banding, you can do this yourself very easily by contacting the District Valuation Office on 03000 501 501. It is not a complicated procedure, there is no requirement whatsoever for a third party to intervene and it will not cost you anything.

If you receive one of these calls, do not give out any personal information and end the call as quickly as possible. The fraudsters can get aggressive and ring back if you put the phone down but this is all part of the scam to make you act as they want.

To report a suspected scam, contact Oxfordshire County Council Trading Standards on 0845 0510845

SUMMER CONCERT AND PICNIC

Sunday June 9th 3pm – 6pm

Freeland Village Hall

In spite of the road/sewer/building work in Wroslyn Road, we are going ahead with an afternoon of tea, cakes, cheese, wine bar-b-que and beautiful music.

So please support us.

The afternoon will start with a short concert of popular and classical songs sung by Charity Opera who have sung for us before at our Christmas Concert. This will be

followed by refreshments and a chance to chat and perhaps buy some of our beautiful hand made crafts. There may even be some more music. It is a family

affair so children are especially welcome and the music will suit all ages.

Entrance by donation (children free) and all monies raised will go to the Joe Homan charity to support their work with families in poverty.
