Richard Mandella admits there are two big ques-

tion marks facing his two-time champion mare

Beholder in Saturday's $1 million TVG Pacific Classic

(gr. I), but he believes the mare is up to the task.

"There are two questions: I think she can get a

mile-and-a-quarter, but she hasn't done it. Second

of all, she hasn't run against colts. Those are two

different things. But that's what the interest was,

to try something a little bit stronger and see what

happens."

It's easy to see why Mandella and owner Spend-

thrift Farm would want to try this. Beholder has

won 13 of 18 and earned $3.6 million racing against

other females. The Henny Hughes mare toyed with

the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (gr. I) field, winning by

seven lengths, and showed her readiness with a half-

mile work in :48 at Del Mar Monday.

"She couldn't look any better," Mandella said. "I

think she deserves this chance, and I would be pretty

disappointed if it didn't work out." BH

Winchell Thoroughbreds had planned to enter

runaway maiden winner Taxable in the Aug.

15 Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) at the Spa. When the

juvenile filly developed an issue, racing manager

David Fiske and trainer Steve Asmussen went to

the bench for another daughter of leading sire

Tapit: Just Wicked. The result was an impressive

score over favored Tonasah.

The winner is out of Wicked Deed, a $280,000

Winchell yearling purchase in 2009, who won three

straight races, including the Tiffany Lass Stakes, at

Fair Grounds in 2010-11.

"All in all, she (Wicked Deed) was pretty scary to

ride," Fiske said. "She just had awful action. One of

her exercise riders said it was like 'riding a saw-

horse rolling downhill.' It looked like her front legs

were just stabbing into the ground. Thankfully, she

didn't pass that along."

Wicked Deed is in foal to...Tapit.

Fasig-Tipton's New York-bred yearling sale closed

Sunday with steady trade and slight gains in

gross and average. EQB, a successful Pennsylva-

nia-based consultant company, purchased four

horses as agent, including a pair for Zayat Stables.

"We were trying to land on horses that looked

like they could run in any venue," said Patti Miller,

vice president of EQB. "We bought quite a few New

York-breds because it's a very good program. It

gives an owner a chance to have a back-up plan."

Having purchased 29 grade I winners, EQB's

high-profile clients also include Ken and Sarah

Ramsey.

"One of the things about (Ahmed) Zayat and

(Ken) Ramsey is they're aggressive owners that

get involved in the management of their horses,"

Miller said. "Every year they have a horse with the

talent to appear at big races. If you look at any

graded winner, you'll find it's a symphony of great

instruments. We're honored to be a part of that,

but we know we're just a piece of that puzzle." BH

The win by Danehill Dancer mare Esoterique

in the Jacques Le Marois (Fr-I) on Sunday

was a timely reminder of the successes of her

sire, who was pensioned in May 2014, and his

stallion sons in 2015. Esoterique is Danehill

Dancer's second European group I winner of

the year, following One Thousand Guineas

(Eng-I) and Nassau Stakes (Eng-I) winner Lega-

tissimo.

Danehill Dancer sons are also having a

strong season. His St. James's Palace Stakes

(Eng-I) winner Mastercraftsman has sired eight

stakes winners that include dual group I win-

ner Amazing Maria. Another son, Jeremy, sired

recent Prix de Pomone (Fr-II) winner Baino Hope as

one of his three group winners in 2015.

Danehill Dancer grandson Starspangledbanner,

who sired Darley Prix Morny (Fr-I) winner The Wow

Signal from his limited first crop of 2-year-olds in

2014, has had a couple of stakes winners including

group III winner Home of The Brave.

And the sire line is still developing. Starspangled-

banner's sire, Choisir, had his group I-winning son

STRATEGIZING RESERVES AT KEENELANDBy Ian Tapp

The Aug. 22 issue of Blood-Horse includes a Mar-

ketWatch preview of the Sept. 14-26 Keeneland

September sale, including a look at reserve prices.

Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales, said

most yearlings in the first three books are offered

with a reserve, either "live-money only" or "all-the-

way."

"Live-money-only means the bid spotters will

only take a bid against live money," Russell said. "If

the reserve is $99,000 but the live bidding stops at

$50,000, then the hammer falls at $50,000."

With all-the-way reserves, the auctioneer will

keep "auctioneering" until he reaches a figure close

to $99,000. "The auctioneer's job is to create the

sale atmosphere to get that $100,000 bid," Russell

said.

Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency

summed up reserves this way: "If you sell a lot of

horses and don't buy any of them back, then you're

probably not judging the market very well. Being too

conservative on your reserves in some cases means

you're leaving a lot of money on the table." BH

THE VIRTUES OF ON-TRACK BETTINGWhen I first became ac-

quainted with the charms

of Belmont Park, roughly 25

years ago, a clear line sep-

arated the mere Saturday

racegoers from their more

devoted cousins, a hardy

subset fondly known as "de-

generate horseplayers."

The Saturday racegoers,

seemingly satisfied (even if

somewhat poorer) after the last of nine races

along stretches of August Belmont's stately oval,

would amble out from the second-floor exit to-

ward the platforms for the Long Island Railroad

trains that would take them to Jamaica or Brook-

lyn or Penn Station, and, from there, to spouses,

kids, dogs, home.

The second group could be found down the

long staircase on the right, at street level, form-

ing a line on a sidewalk that set them apart from

their more domestic relations. This line led only

toward a bus, but that bus would cross a cou-

ple of rivers and eventually deposit them at the

Meadowlands, in time for yet another full card

of racing, this one under the lights.

Today, neither the Saturday punter nor the

degenerate horseplayer needs to leave home

(let alone ride buses from racetrack to racetrack)

just to bet some races. While this may seem to

be a resoundingly positive development, as the

song says, "Well, something's lost, but some-

thing's gained in living every day."

The theory here (and elsewhere) is that the

continued evolution of the digital horseracing

era will make the "local" racetrack an irrelevan-

cy, except in its role as a simulcast center. When

even a great racetrack like Arlington stumbles

further down the road to becoming Suffolk

Downs, how long before the value of the un-

derlying real estate has its inevitable say? Then

these places, where the great Cigar once ran

before adoring crowds, will join Hollywood Park

in the "commemorative rubble" market.

Maybe someday an immersive, digital con-

traption will replicate the big-time racetrack ex-

perience for those unable to venture anywhere

near Saratoga or Arcadia or Lexington or Hot

Springs. But even if such a gizmo ever comes

to market, it can never measure up to the real

thing.

Those guys from 25 years ago—the ones who

took a train to Belmont for one card and then

a bus to Jersey for another—learned to love

betting the races by going to racetracks. The

spectacle, the camaraderie, and the excitement

of betting on live horses while being surrounded

by other horseplayers are experiences only a

racetrack can provide.

There is something in this heady mix that

creates race fans and horseplayers. You can try

to replicate this atmosphere at home, but, in my

experience, your spouse will not appreciate it

all that much, and things will inevitably end with

the dog becoming terribly upset. BH
