NOBLE BIRD CHASES SECOND GRADE I IN CLARKBy Alicia Wincze-Hughest @BH_AHughes

Momentum of the good kind has proven a tricky thing for Noble

Bird.When the son of Birdstone

notched his first grade I triumph in 2015, it figured to be the launching point for more of the same—not the four-race losing skid that followed. And just when the headstrong chestnut horse appeared to right the ship with an 11 1/4-length triumph in this year's Pimlico Special Handicap (gr. III), the wheels seemed to come loose again with consecutive off-the-board outings in grade I contests.

It is a tribute to his barn that Noble Bird has once again managed to swing the pendulum back to the positive in his last two starts. In an ironic twist, the horse who has had a most fitful relationship with consistency brings some of

best recent form to the table in a contentious edition of the $500,000 Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (gr. I) at Churchill Downs Nov. 25.

There have been some particularly strong editions of the 1 1/8-mile Clark Handicap in recent seasons, and this year's 10-horse field is no different. Noble Bird is one of four grade I winners in the mix, including 3-1 morning-line favorite and 2014 race winner Hoppertunity, and seven of the Clark entrants have surpassed the $1 million mark in career earnings.

Since being well-beaten in both the Mohegan Sun Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) and Whitney Stakes (gr. I), Noble Bird has gotten himself back on track with handy victories in the Oct. 1 Lukas Classic at Churchill and his track record-setting, 5 3/4-length win in the Hagyard Fayette Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland Oct. 29.

Trying to pin down the difference between the 7-2 morning-line

second choice looking like the front-running force who won the 2015 Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) and him acting like an also-ran, assistant trainer Norman Casse said he believes it boils down to letting John Oxley's mercurial runner do what he wants, when he wants.

"I think we're really cautiously optimistic. He does throw in clunkers from time to time. With that being said, he just gives us a whole lot of confidence right now," said Casse, son and top assistant to head trainer Mark Casse. "We don't do too much with him between races because he's kind of hard on himself. Maybe more importantly, now that Julien (Leparoux) has gotten the chance to ride him multiple times, he's probably figured him out a little bit more what makes him tick.

"He doesn't have to have the lead, but he doesn't want to be held. But he also doesn't like being rushed off his feet either, which is what we did in the Met Mile. He just wants to dictate things on his own

terms and you have to let him feel like he's in control. That seems to be what is pretty paramount going into the first turn with him."

Which, if any of Noble Bird's nine challengers try and press him on the front end, could alter the complexion of the race for a handful of rivals.

Tri-Bone Stables' Effinex won last year's edition of the Clark to earn his first grade I score, but has struggled to maintain that form in seven starts since. The 5-year-old Mineshaft horse bounced out of a sixth-place finish in the June 18 Stephen Foster with a win in the Suburban Handicap (gr. II) but has dropped three straight since, including a seventh in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).

Effinex is the 4-1 co-third choice on the morning line and will be joined in the gate by fellow grade I-winner and Jimmy Jerkens trainee, Shaman Ghost.

There are few better models of consistency than Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman's Hoppertunity, who will be starting in the Clark Handicap for a third straight year, having finished in the runner-up position in 2015. The 5-year-old Any Given Saturday horse has been worse than fourth just once in 23 career starts—that coming when he ran fifth in his career debut—and enters off a fourth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

A grade I triumph is about the only thing missing from Gun Runner's resume at this point. The hard-knocking 3-year-old son of Candy Ride was third in the year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and second in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (both gr. I) Nov. 4, with his only lackluster efforts coming when he has raced over off tracks. BH

BC RUNNER-UP VALADORNA BYPASSES GOLDEN RODBy Alicia Wincze-Hughest @BH_AHughes

Stonestreet Stables' Valadorna, runner-up in the Nov. 5 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Fillies (gr. I), will bypass the Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Downs Nov. 26 and be freshened for her soph-omore campaign, according to assistant Norman Casse.

The daughter of Curlin had been under consideration for the 1 1/16-mile Golden Rod after working four furlongs in :47 4/5 at Churchill Nov. 18, but the long-term goal of getting her ready for a possible Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) outing next spring took precedent.

"We're going to sit the Golden Rod out," said Casse, son of head trainer Mark Casse. "Dad and (Stonestreet) just decided to give her a little break and point her for the spring races."

The Casse barn is still set to be represented in the Golden Rod by John Oxley's Dream Dancing, who finished fifth after a troubled trip in the Darley Alciabides

Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland Oct. 7 and will wear blinkers for the first time this weekend.

Fellow Oxley-owned Classic Empire, who likely clinched divisional honors with his triumph in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), is also doing well, according to Casse, and is set to ship to Palm Meadows Training Center in South Florida this week along with reigning champion turf female Tepin, to gear up for the 2017 season. HARMONIZE HEADS MRS. REVERE STAKESBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

A close second and third in the Oct. 15 Queen Elizabeth Chal-

lenge Cup Stakes presented by Lane's End (gr. IT) at Keeneland, Harmonize and Hawksmoor meet again in the $200,000 Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) Nov. 25 on the Churchill Downs turf.

In the 1 1/8-mile Queen Elizabeth II, Harmonize rallied from eighth to finish second, a head behind winner Time and Motion and a nose in front of third-place Hawksmoor. This time the two meet going 1 1/16 miles in the Mrs. Revere, which has attracted an overflow field of 3-year-old fillies.

Larkin Armstrong's Harmonize, the 2-1 morning-line favorite, notched a grade I win Aug. 20 for trainer Bill Mott

when she rallied to edge Decked Out by a head in the Del Mar Oaks. The Scat Daddy filly has won three other stakes, including last year's 1 1/16-mile JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland, where she set a course record of 1:44.19.

Lael Stables' Hawksmoor, 5-2 second choice, made her U.S. debut in the Queen Elizabeth, her final start for Newmarket-based trainer Hugo Palmer. That day she pressed pacesetter Catch a Glimpse early and continued well to earn the close third. Now trained by Arnaud Delacour, the daughter of Azamour seeks her first grade I or group I win. Hawksmoor has

won two group stakes, including this year's German One Thousand Guineas (Ger-II). BH

KENTUCKY TO REQUIRE BONDED ADWSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

In a special meeting Nov. 22 in Lexington, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) approved a rule that

will require advance-deposit wagering (ADW) companies that operate in the state acquire a bond of up to $500,000 as a condition of licensing.

The new requirement was recommended by the KHRC's pari-mutuel committee, which views the requirement as a way to provide added protection for Kentucky ADW customers—as well as the state—should an ADW declare bankruptcy.

Under the plan, ADW companies will be required to secure a bond that would cover the average daily account holdings of its Kentucky players as well as an average month's worth of state taxes.

Kentucky will require each ADW operator to acquire a surety bond equal to 125% of the average daily money held by Kentucky players in accounts at the ADW and four weeks of average state taxes paid by the outlet, up to $500,000. The KHRC will examine a six-month period to determine those averages.

As further protection of customer accounts, Kentucky requires player accounts be separate from an ADW's operational accounts. But members of the KHRC pari-mutuel committee said the bond provides further protection should a bankruptcy court not see such a difference. The rule is designed to ensure there will be enough money from the bond to pay account holders and the state.

Under the rule as outlined, should an ADW go bankrupt, money from the bond would go to the KHRC to be distributed to players, and for state taxes. Committee members expressed confidence that such money would not be available to creditors in a bankruptcy.

Committee members said such bonds are in place in states like California and Minnesota. KHRC pari-mutuel wagering and compliance supervisor Steve May said the requirement will begin at a date to be determined in 2017.

Committee member Mike Ziegler, executive director of racing at Churchill Downs Inc., abstained from voting on the issue as Churchill owns the large ADW company TwinSpires.com. Ziegler said he would be concerned that the bond requirement could lead to some ADW companies choosing to no longer pursue licensing in Kentucky but continue to operate in the state. He said

such a scenario would reduce protections for players.Later speaking on behalf of Churchill and TwinSpires,

Ziegler also suggested that ADW companies that can demonstrate solid financial footing should not be required to acquire the waiver. Committee member Frank Kling, who is the KHRC chairman, said that idea could be an option down the line, but encouraged the committee to move forward on the current bond requirement, as is.

At the committee level the new bond requirement passed by a 4-0 vote, with Ziegler abstaining. Later Tuesday afternoon the KHRC approved the requirement.

For consideration at the Dec. 13 KHRC meeting, the Pari-Mutuel Committee recommended licensure of eight ADW companies, including two newcomers in NewCo Ventures (which operates as NYRABets.com) and Watch and Wager. NYRA Bets had initially allowed only New York customers but this year launched nationally. Watch and Wager is a subsidiary of Webis Holdings, which is publically traded on the London Stock Exchange. Since 2012, Watch and Wager has operated the Cal Expo Harness Racing meet.

May said in the coming year he will work with ADWs to put rules in place that will ensure that each ADW outlet has current address listings of players. He outlined a plan that would see customers who log-in to a site occasionally be asked if their current address listing is correct, and require an update if it's not. He envisioned such checks to take place two or three times a year.

Also at Tuesday's special KHRC meeting, PariMax was approved for historical racing games in the state. That isn't a big change as the commission had previously approved RaceTech to operate the games. Earlier this year PariMax, which is owned by The Stronach Group, purchased 100% of the RaceTech historical gaming operation. BH

BACK FROM QUARTER CRACK, SHARP AZTECA SCORESBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Fully recovered from a major quarter crack, Gel-fenstein Farm's Sharp Azteca secured his second

stakes win of the season when he drew off in the stretch for a 5 1/4-length victory in the seven-furlong City of Laurel Stakes Nov. 19 at Laurel Park, earning the week's top Equibase Speed Figure of 121.

The quarter crack forced the 3-year-old son of Freud to take a break of more than three months after his runner-up finish in the Super Derby Prelude Stakes Aug. 6 at Harrah's Louisiana Downs. Trainer Jorge Navarro said they initially thought Sharp Azteca would miss even more time.

"We thought he was going to be out more than three months, maybe up to a year. My blacksmith, he did an amazing job," Navarro said. "Seven-eighths is a distance that can be tough unless he's ready, and I guess he was. He's going to be my top 4-year-old."

Earlier this season Sharp Azteca registered a 2 1/2-length score in the Pat Day Mile Stakes (gr. III)

going a one-turn mile at Churchill Downs. After earning a career-best 121 ESF in the City of

Laurel under jockey Edgard Zayas, Navarro said Sharp Azteca now will be pointed to the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Park. Like the City of Laurel, the Malibu is restricted to 3-year-olds and contested at seven furlongs. BH

PATER PAINTING TOPS SPORTING ART AUCTIONBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Andre Pater's Red Arrow, 2016 was sold for $276,000, in-

cluding buyer premium, to top the fourth annual Sporting Art Auction at Keeneland Nov. 21.

Pater was on hand to watch the competition for his work, a 36" x 24" pastel signed by the artist. The painting depicts a Lakota warrior wearing a buckskin war-shirt decorated in locks of horsehair and scalps along his arm, draped in a buffalo robe.

With 75% sold (131 pieces), the Sporting Art Auction, which is a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington, brought in revenues of $2,478,710.

The 2016 collection featured 175 high-quality lots representing fine sporting art, American paintings, and sculptures by world-renowned artists. Paintings by LeRoy Neiman brought the evening's second-highest prices, with his works Seattle Slew and Epsom selling for $115,000 each, including buyer premium.

Neiman's Seattle Slew is a 45 3/4" x 68 1/4" acrylic signed by the artist. Neiman sketched champion Seattle Slew outside his barn at Belmont Park in 1977, the year the

colt won the Triple Crown. In his book "Horses," Neiman wrote that he had Seattle Slew "affixed his signature to the drawing. His hoofprint is in the lower right corner just over my signature."

Also selling for $115,000 was Neiman's Epsom, a 23 1/2" x 36" acrylic on board, also signed by the artist, dated '63 and inscribed "Epsom." BH

MACHEN GETS FIRST WINNER IN WEST VIRGINIABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

West Virginia freshman sire Machen got his first winner Nov. 21 when his gelded son Moovin On

Machen won a maiden special weight by a length at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort.

Making his first start, Moovin On Machen led a short field of three other competitors start to finish, hitting the wire after five and half furlongs in 1:07.91. The gelding is a homebred racing for his trainer, J. Michael Baird.

Baird also owns Machen, a grade III-winning son of Distorted Humor who made five starts at 3 and won three times, including taking The Cliff's Edge Derby Trial Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs. He earned $216,530 in purses for Don and Donna Adam's Courtlandt Farms before being sold as a stallion prospect through the 2012 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Baird bought him for $70,000.

Moovin On Machen is the first foal out of Miss Maddy Moo, a winning daughter of Bellamy Road, who Baird bought as a weanling at the 2008 Keeneland November sale for $24,000 and raced in partnership with Wind River Stables.

Miss Maddy Moo has a yearling full sister and a weanling full sister to Moovin On Machen. Baird stands Machen at Il Cavallo Farm near New Cumberland, W.Va. for a private fee. BH

LITTLE RED FEATHER BUYS INTO LIGHTSTREAMBy BloodHorse Staff

Little Red Feather Racing has purchased a minority interest in Uphill Stable and Head of Plains Partners'

multiple graded stakes winner Lightstream for an undis-closed sum. The deal was brokered by Travis White of Taylor Made Sales Agency and by Bradley Weisbord's BSW Bloodstock.

Lightstream, a 3-year-old Harlan's Holiday filly, won the Oct. 22 Lexus Raven Run Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland last out. Her other graded victory came in April's Adena Springs Beaumont Stakes (gr. III). She will remain with trainer Brian Lynch.

"Bringing opportunities like this to our great partners is the hallmark of Little Red Feather," said Little Red Feather managing partner Gary Fenton. "Our partners expect us to fill their racing portfolios with horses that can improve in value and provide them with a first-class experience."

"When we saw Lightstream win the Raven Run, I knew we had to find a way to buy in," said Billy Koch, founder and managing partner of Little Red Feather. "This is an exciting horse with a world of potential, and we look forward to a great co-ownership."

Bred in Kentucky by Ann Marie Farm out of the Arch stakes-winning daughter North Beach, Lightstream was a $55,000 purchase by Uphill Stable from her breeder's consignment to the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale. She is targeting the Dec. 26 La Brea (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park. BH

BIG SPORT OF TURFDOM AWARD GOES TO SHERMANBy BloodHorse Staff

The Turf Publicists of America an-nounced Nov. 22 that Art Sherman,

trainer of champion and all-time North American earnings leader California Chrome, will be honored with the 2016 Big Sport of Turfdom Award—which recognizes a person or group of people who enhance coverage of Thorough-bred racing through cooperation with media and racing publicists.

Sherman won in a vote determined by the nearly 150 active members of the TPA, a trade organization of Thoroughbred racing publicists and marketing executives.

"I am so delighted and honored to be among the people that have won this award, a who's who of racing," Sherman said. "I've always tried to be accommodating to the press and even anyone that asks me for an autograph. It's for the betterment of the game. Anything for racing."

Under Sherman's care, California Chrome has won 15 of 25 starts while amassing $14,452,650 in earnings across four seasons. As a 3-year old, the son of Lucky Pulpit won the 2014 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) en route to Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male honors. This season, the 5-year-old chestnut continued to add to his illustrious resume with wins in three group or grade I races, including the $10 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline, and was second in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).

"Art Sherman is a publicist's dream," said TPA president Jim Mulvihill. "For three years he has trained one of the top horses in the world and during that span has made himself available for thousands of

interviews. His genuine nature and likability have been major factors in California Chrome becoming one of the most popular racehorses of our time."

The Big Sport of Turfdom will be presented to Sherman at the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program's annual Awards Luncheon Dec. 6, emceed by Santa Anita Park track announcer Michael Wrona. The luncheon is part of the 2016 Symposium on Racing & Gaming at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Ariz.

PEDIGREE ANALYSISwith Alan Porter

DIALED IN TAKES FRESHMAN SIRE LEADBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

The battle for the 2016 freshman sire crown has devel-oped into quite a tight one. Going into the weekend,

the leader was Union Rags, who was already represent-ed by the Alcibiades Stakes (gr. I) victress Dancing Rags and Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) heroine Union Strike. Union Rags added a third stakes winner Nov. 19 when Tequilita captured the Smart Halo Stakes at Laurel Park.

Despite that success, the weekend saw Union Rags overtaken by Dialed In, who opened up a lead of just under $150,000, courtesy of the victory of his son Gunnevera in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III). In a strange parallel, Gunnevera scored a previous graded stakes triumph in the Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II), and that same pattern applies to last year's Delta Jackpot scorer, Exaggerator. Given that Exaggerator added the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) this year, that's a bright omen for Gunnevera, who actually achieved his 5 3/4-length victory with a sweeping move from the rear, reminiscent of Exaggerator's best efforts.

Dialed In is also tied for second among this year's freshman for individual winners, with 16, which also include Ruffenuff, who is three-for-three, all her wins coming in stakes events at Northlands Park. These results are all the more surprising and creditable, given that Dialed In, a son of Mineshaft, ran just once at 2, and in the November of that season. In that race—a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Churchill Downs, Dialed In produced an eye-catching performance. Nearly 12 lengths back in ninth at the half, he flew when switched wide and was up in time to score by half a length.

Dialed In also came from last to first to win the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) on his debut at 3. Beaten half a length against older horses in an allowance/optional claiming

event at Gulfstream Park next out, he regained the winning thread in the Florida Derby (gr. I), where his late charge allowed him to nip front-running Shackleford at the wire, with To Honor and Serve back in third. Favorite for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Dialed In found the task of closing from last in a 19 horse field too much, finishing eighth behind Animal Kingdom. He ran just twice more, finishing fourth to Shackleford in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and fourth in an allowance event at Gulfstream the following spring.

Gunnevera shouldn't want for stamina as he points towards a classic campaign in 2017. His dam, Unbridled Rage, is a daughter of Unbridled out of the stakes-placed Graustark mare, Suite. The third, dam, Minstrel Princess—also granddam of champion Canadian 2-year-old filly Van Lear Rose—is by The Minstrel, winner of the Epsom Derby (gr. I). Minstrel Princess's dam, Lucy Grey, is half sister to the long-winded Grey of Falloden, who took one of England's principal staying events, the 18-furlong Doncaster Cup.

The Mineshaft/Fappiano cross that produced Gunnevera is also responsible for Mineshaft's Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) winner Cool Coal Man. The Fappiano strain is all the more appealing here as Dialed In's granddam is champion 2-year-old filly Eliza, a daughter of Mt. Livermore, and Mt. Livermore and Fappiano combine in nearly 50 stakes winners, including grade one winners Intangaroo and Lady Joanne. BH

2016 BROODMARE SIRES

2016 SIRES BY LIFETIME AEIListed below are the top 10 leading sires by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI) through November 21, 2016. Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. All statistics are Northern Hemisphere only. AEI indicates how much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned in relation to the average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is represented by an index of 1.00. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.

Listed below are the top 10 leading broodmare sires by 2016 Northern Hemisphere earnings through November 21, 2016. All stallions whose daughters are represented by at least one Northern Hemisphere runner in 2016 are included. Cumulative stakes winners includes lifetime worldwide statistics; all other statistics are 2016 Northern Hemisphere only.

Listed below is a comparison of statistics for only North American racing with all available statistics through November 21, 2016. Only stallions that stand, will stand, or stood in North America (excluding stallions that died or were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season), and have runners in North America are included..
