AMERICAN PHAROAH ARRIVES AT KEENELANDBy Frank Angst
Zayat Stables' American Pharoah cleared another
hurdle Oct. 27 after completing a smooth trip
from Southern California to Lexington where the
Triple Crown winner will begin final preparations for
his start in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Oct. 31 at
Keeneland.
American Pharoah arrived at Keeneland's Barn 62
just after 4 p.m. Tuesday after landing at nearby Blue
Grass Airport just after 3:30. Owner Ahmed Zayat
met his star horse at the airport and then drove over
to see him unload on the rainy Keeneland back-
stretch.
"He shipped well and everybody's happy," Baffert
said. "(Assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes) said he was hap-
py getting off the plane. I'm sure he liked that cool air
here when he stepped off the plane; most horses do."
Baffert hopes for an uneventful week as American
Pharoah prepares for his final career start. "Now we
just want to have four good days up to the race," he
said. "We're not going to do much." BH

UNTAPABLE POINTED TO 2016 CAMPAIGNBy Lenny Shulman
Untapable won't get a chance to defend her
Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) title, but it looks
like she will get a crack at a 2016 campaign. The
daughter of Tapit spiked a temperature Oct. 26
and still had a low-grade fever the following morn-
ing, prompting her treatment with antibiotics and
Winchell Thoroughbreds' decision to scratch the
4-year-old from the Oct. 31 Distaff, in which she
was second-favorite on the morning line.
Untapable won this year's Apple Blossom Hand-
icap (gr. I) but otherwise seemed a step slower
than during her 2014 Eclipse Award-winning cam-
paign as top 3-year-old filly. She was still competi-
tive throughout 2015, though, finishing second or
third in her other five starts.
"Disappointment is an understatement," said
owner/breeder Ron Winchell. "We've been gearing
up for the Breeders' Cup since the beginning of the
year. It's not final, but I'm leaning toward running
her next year. After having to scratch her out of
this race, it makes me want to come back and
attempt one more." BH
LATEST HEADLINES FROM BLOODHORSE.COMTHE BIG BEAST RETIRED TO OCALA STUD FOR 2016 The Big Beast, winner of last year's King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I), has been retired from racing and will stand in 2016 at J. Michael O'Farrell's Ocala Stud in Florida.
GOLDEN HORN CLEARS QUARANTINE AND CANTERS Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) favorite Golden Horn stretched his legs Oct. 27 on Keeneland's synthetic training track after clearing quarantine.
HALF TO MASTERCRAFTSMAN TOPS AT TATTERSALLS Prospector, a Galileo half brother to champion Mastercraftsman, topped the Oct. 26 opening session of the Tattersalls autumn horses in training sale at 240,000 guineas ($386,684).
TONALIST FINDS COMFORT ZONE IN LONGER RACES The 10-furlong distance of the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) provides comfort for trainer Christophe Clement, who will send out Tonalist in this year's edition of North America's richest race.
LAST GO AROUND FOR STEPHANIE'S KITTEN She will be offered at Fasig-Tipton Nov. 1, but first Stephanie's Kitten will seek her second Breeders' Cup victory, this time in the Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT), which she narrowly lost a year ago.
14 TO CONTEST MARATHON ON BREEDERS' CUP CARD Neck 'n Neck and Majestic Harbor head the Oct. 30 Marathon Stakes (gr. II) at 1 3/4 miles, the longest race that will be run over Breeders' Cup weekend at Keeneland.
BC BOX SEATING, DINING OPTIONS AVAILABLE Three days before the Oct. 30-31 World Championships at Keeneland, Breeders' Cup announced "prime seating" and dining locations are available to the public.
THOROUGHBRED MAKEOVER CALLED A SUCCESS Organizers of the TCA Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, held at the Kentucky Horse Park Oct. 23-25, called the event a success.

TAPIT ON TOP WITH MOST BC ENTRIESBy Madison Scott
Of the thousands of Breeders' Cup-nominated
horses—many of whom were offered at auction
with the line "Engagements: Breeders' Cup" at the
bottom of their catalog pages—just 175 were entered
for the Oct. 30-31 World Championships.
Unsurprisingly, Tapit has the most Breeders' Cup
entries of any other sire with nine, though Untapa-
ble's scratch drops the number to a still-best eight.
Galileo and Kitten's Joy are tied with six starters
apiece and, with the exception of Galileo's Classic
(gr. I) contender Gleneagles, all in turf races. Four
sires are tied with five entries: Bernardini, Hard Spun,
Medaglia d'Oro, and Scat Daddy.
Breeders' Cup entries provide a gauge of the
versatility of a sire's elite performers. Tapit's entrants
are in seven different races while Galileo, Kitten's
Joy, and Medaglia d'Oro are represented in five races
each. Despite thriving at classic distances as a race-
horse, Bernardini has three contenders in the sev-
en-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I).
Of the stud farms, Darley has the largest Breeders'
Cup representation with 21 entries by stallions on its
2015 roster. BH
FEES RISE FOR MEDAGLIA D'ORO, BERNARDINIBy Myra Lewyn
Medaglia d'Oro will command a $150,000 fee
next year as he heads Darley's North American
2016 roster of 14 stallions. The fee increases from
$125,000 in 2015.
The 16-year-old son of El Prado currently ranks sec-
ond on the general sires list with nearly $10.9 million
in progeny earnings. His chief earner this year, Gulf-
stream Park Turf Handicap (gr. IT) victor Mshawish,
accounts for $908,880.
Medaglia d'Oro has sired 28 stakes winners in 2015,
15 of which are graded/group winners. These include
unbeaten Del Mar Debutante (gr. I)-winning filly Song-
bird and 2014-15 Australian champion Vancouver.
Bernardini's 2016 fee is set at $100,000, up from
$85,000 last year. The 12-year-old son of A.P. Indy is
perhaps amidst his best year as he is represented by
five grade/group I winners, tying him with Tapit.
The fee for Girolamo, whose first crop of 2-year-
olds includes 14 winners and grade I-placed stakes
winner She's All Ready, increases to $15,000 from
$5,000 last season. BH

The highest dirt figure earned by a Breeders' Cup
starter this season is the 126 earned by both Honor
Code and Liam's Map in their close one-two finish in
the 1 1/8-mile Whitney (gr. I). Honor Code is entered
in the 1 1/4-mile Classic (gr. I) and Liam's Map in the
Dirt Mile (gr. I). BH
SPEED FIGURE STANDOUTS READY FOR BCBy Frank Angst
Red Rifle, Honor Code, and Liam's Map will try to
replicate the leading Equibase Speed Figures they
earned earlier this season in their respective Breed-
ers' Cup races Oct. 30-31.
Among horses entered in Breeders' Cup races
this year, Twin Creeks Racing Stables' Red Rifle owns
the highest 2015 Equibase Speed Figure: a 129 he
posted in his runner-up finish to Flintshire in the 1
1/2-mile Sword Dancer (gr. IT) on the Saratoga Race
Course turf. Flintshire earned the highest figure of
the season in that race, 131, but will not race in the
Breeders' Cup. Red Rifle is 10-1 on the Turf (gr. IT)
morning line.

FLOWER ALLEY ACCLIMATIZES IN AFRICABy Sarah Whitelaw
Flower Alley, the sire of 2012 Kentucky Derby and
Preakness (both gr. I) winner I'll Have Another,
has acclimatized well to his new South African home.
Standing at Wilgerbosdrift Stud Farm, the son of Dis-
torted Humor has been described as very alert, run-
ning around his paddock always looking for action.
The farm reports both Flower Alley's libido and
fertility are excellent, and the 2005 Travers Stakes (gr.
I) winner already has some outstanding mares in foal:
South Africa Fillies Classic (SAf-I) winner Athina (Fort
Wood); grade I-placed Berry Blaze (Danehill Dancer);
Tapit mare Gin Rummy; grade I winner/producer
Lady Brompton (Al Mufti); Seeking the Wind (Jallad),
the dam of J & B Met (SAf-I) winner Martial Eagle;
Woolavington 2,000 (SAf-I) winner Zirconeum (Jallad);
Serra Negra (Kris), dam of Cape Guineas (SAf-I) win-
ner Noordhoek Flyer; and Sweet Mary (Holy Roman
Emperor), a half sister to U.A.E. Derby (UAE-II) winner
Mubtaahij.
Flower Alley was fully booked this year—his first in
South Africa—at a fee of R80,000 ($5,848). BH
LAWMAN CONTINUES UPWARD TRAJECTORYBy Clive Webb-Carter
Ballylinch Stud stallion Lawman sired his fourth
career group I winner Oct. 24 when Marcel stayed
on strongly to win the Racing Post Trophy (Eng-I) at
Doncaster.
Winner of both the Prix du Jockey Club (Fr-I) and
the Prix Jean Prat (Fr-I), Lawman was Invincible Spirit's
first group I winner. Lawman, who retired to stud in
2008, made a strong start as a sire with six stakes
winners—including St. James's Palace (Eng-I) winner
Most Improved—in his first crop. Two more group
I winners followed from his second crop: Irish One
Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) winner Just The Judge and
Gran Criterium (Ity-I) winner Law Enforcement.
Lawman's early successes are now being reflect-
ed by the strength of his current yearling crop. Two
Lawman fillies made more than 400,000 guineas
($643,000) at Tattersalls October Book 1 while the fol-
lowing week's Book 2 saw Lawman yearlings average
well over 60,000 guineas ($96,450).
Lawman stood the 2015 season for a €25,000
($27,600) stud fee. BHLO

CREAM PUFFS AND LEMONS AT AUCTION
In an influential 1970 economics paper, George
Akerlof discussed pricing complications arising
from the difficulties faced by used-car buyers
trying to distinguish between "cream puffs"
(well-cared-for cars with no flaws) and "lem-
ons" (cars with flaws that sellers try to disguise
as cream puffs). Akerlof would have found the
mare market even more difficult to sort out—
while you can't mistake a Fiat for a Mercedes-
Benz, a $2,000 mare might be visually indiscerni-
ble from a $2 million mare.
Mare buyers use due diligence to distinguish
cream puffs from lemons, and to assess mares
of intermediate quality as well. Here are tips for
making those distinctions.
Mares cataloged at bloodstock sales are of-
ten offered because their owners consider them
flawed. As some flaws will be difficult for poten-
tial buyers to discover at the sale, buyers lower
maximum bids accordingly. However, dispersal
sales bring premium prices—and for good
reason: Because a complete dispersal
sale offers all of an owner's horses, such
sales contain fewer lemons and com-
mand higher prices.
Sale mares that have significantly
appreciated from the seller's original pur-
chase price are less likely to be lemons.
The obvious reason is that something
positive has caused the appreciation. But
tax considerations play a role as well.
If appreciated mares are sold after
a two-year holding period, a part of the
proceeds is taxed at favorable capital
gains rates. Mare depreciation rules also
encourage the sale of appreciated mares.
In contrast, if an appreciated mare is
retained, her foals' sale proceeds will be
taxed at higher "ordinary" income rates.
Therefore, tax considerations encourage
the sale of appreciated cream puffs.
Tax considerations also play a role when a
covering stallion "hits," causing the increased
value of an in-foal mare. The stud fee can be de-
ducted as an expense at ordinary tax rates while
a part of the higher sales price may be taxed
at favorable capital gains rates. It often makes
financial sense for an owner to sell such mares
even if they are favorites.
Sean Curtin, owner of Moonestone Farm,
characterizes broodmare prospects just off the
track and mares carrying first foals as "unknown
quantities." Because they are harder to charac-
terize, both the cream puffs and the lemons in
these categories will be offered for sale rather
than a disproportionate number of lemons.
Contrast this to the case of an owner's cata-
loging a mare after having seen her early foals.
Unless you have evidence to the contrary, make
allowance for the possibility that such a mare is
being culled before it becomes obvious she is a
bad producer. BH
