THE STREET STORE is an initiative of M&C Saatchi Abel, founded by Maximilian Pazak and Kayli

Vee Levitan, in partnership with The Haven Night Shelter on Napier. It was started in Cape Town, South Africa on 14th January 2014 and since then, more then 400 Street Stores have been organized all over the world.

The aim is, to set up a “Store”, in which volunteers, like real shop assistants, “sell” clothes and shoes to homeless for free in a dignified atmosphere, that includes consulting, trying on of items and a neat packing of the clothes into nice bags.

On Freedom Day, April 27th, The Street Store will open in East London for the first time: To the homeless of East London, Eastern Cape, at the front yard of the Salvation Army.

Together with some dedicated friends, I am organizing THE STREET STORE EAST LONDON with the Salva-tion Army, our hands-on NGO, very ideal because they have direct access

to the homeless to whom we want to cater to with our Street Store – and the items which might not be “sold” will then be donated to the Salvation Army. On the day, we plan to have a booth of the Eastern Cape Health Department which will inform about health issues, and one with informa-tion for unskilled workers which can help to build the bridge to enter-prises where they may find a new job, again. We’ll serve tea and coffee and the brass band of the Salvation Army promised a little concert. It was a humbling experience to find open doors wherever I went for support – be it Buffalo City Municipality, the Police, or stores, or colleagues and friends, and I hope this luck and un-derstanding continues until Freedom Day, which we thought a befitting date for “THE STREET STORE EAST LONDON.”For more information, to assist on the day, or to help with donations, please call Dr. Carola Hantelmann 082 571 0195.

ANN BRYANT ART GALLERY: 7 Apr. Cocktail opening of CARTOONS FOR FREEDOM EXHIBIT (Les dessins en liberté / Cartoons from freedom) at Ann Bryant Coach House from 6.30pm. The Institut français is proposing to the French Cultural Network an exhibit on press cartoons from artists from all over the world. The aim is to stir up a debate on freedom of expression. The ‘‘Dessins en liberté’’ (Cartoons for Freedom) exhibit is comprised of 12 panels of press illustrations made by 50 artists from around the world. Each panel is devoted to a specific theme concerning freedom of expression, such as censorship, Internet, corruption, women’s rights, rebellions, climate, sports, racism, etc. The drawings made by artists of 45 different nationalities have all been published in the local press. While echoing the attacks against Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, this exhibit proposes broadening the perspective by illustrating the manner in which freedom of expression today comes into play on all continents. This event aims at stirring up a debate on the is-sue of freedom of expression as well as at facilitating relations and discussion

between authors, illustrators, journal-ists, associations, representatives of civil society invited by the French Cul-tural Network. The newspaper Courrier international will facilitate contacts with the cartoonists. The exhibit has been produced by the Institut français in partnership with Courrier interna-tional. Partners: Created by The French Institute and Courier International and dispatched through the Alliance Fran-çaise International Network. Brought to you by The Alliance Française of East London. Exhibition concludes Saturday 23 April 2016.

FLORADALE FINE ART GALLERY: New exhibition: The Best of the Past. Generally a trip to the vet means it's doggie vaccination time, or

else a minor ailment needs to be tended to. Those of us with pets for best friends dread it when our beloved companions need to go under the knife.

But have you ever considered the possibility that during that procedure your pet might need blood? The chances are worryingly large. Injuries due to an accident, fight or an attack by another animal are major causes. Also diseases such as tick fever break down red blood cells, resulting in the animal needing blood.

Where would that come

from? Can animals receive blood? Who donates blood for animals?

Dogs can donate blood. In fact, so can cats and horses. Pets can donate every 3-4 months, and at Gonubie Veterinary Clinic where dogs are bled, this is done purely on demand. The clinic has a database of dogs and the owners are contacted should the need arise.

For a dog to be considered it needs to be between 1 and 7 years old. A prospective candidate can be from any breed, must weigh over 25kgs, and all vaccinations must be up to date. A happy, healthy pet.

Page 35: April What's On Web

During the donation, which takes approximately an hour, the dog will be partially sedated, and will remain a bit drowsy for the remainder of the day. The procedure is safe and hold no risks to the animal.

Should you be willing to allow your dog to be a

hero, contact the Gonubie Veterinary Clinic on 043 740 4004 or 083 275 3612. You will be required to fill out paperwork and your dog will need to be checked out.

Wouldn’t it be great if your dog could help save the life of another and bring joy to a family?
