PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Cory & Bronwen

Spring in the Fraser Valley is one of the best times of the year. Everything starts to blossom and bloom, and people start thinking about getting out into their gardens.

There is no better place to celebrate the arrival of the season of renewal than with The Abbotsford Tulip Festival that kicks off on March 25th and runs until May 1st. The What’s On Abbotsford staff is tickled pink to being one of the Sponsors of this event and can hardly wait to get out into the fi elds with our cameras to capture the beauty of the mighty Tulip.

The Festival runs for fi ve weeks, and is open from 9 am to 6 pm daily and invites everyone to celebrate the beauty of the tulips and the Dutch Heritage of the Fraser Valley.

What’s On Abbotsford was very proud to learn that Co-Publisher Cory Cassel has been nominated as a Champion of Diversity for the Annual Cultural Diversity Awards sponsored by the Abbotsford Community Services Society. All of the What’s On Abbotsford staff will be attendance at the Awards and are so delighted to be part of a community that is not only so diverse, but takes the time to recognize it!

Happy Spring Everyone! There are so many events in the community to keep you busy and active in the next two months!

Spring has arrived and the Tulips are in bloom!

Museums play an important role in the stewardship of a community’s shared past

The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsfordis committed to preserving and sharing

the stories of our rich and diverse cultural heritage and showcasing the best in the visual arts from both inside and outside our community. The Reach collects artefacts, photographs and archival material thatdocuments the diversity of culturalheritage to establish an enduring record of Abbotsford’s past. In part due to their shared heritage mandate, The Reach and the MSA Museum Society are working

culture collection contains approximately14,500 artefacts, 240 linear feet of archival materials and an online photo archives of over 28,000 images and context.

The collections are used for exhibition, education, programming and researchfunctions. Members of the public often ask why we don’t have more of our collection on view. Like most museums, the majority of The Reach’s collections are not kept primarily on display. Historicobjects and archival material are fragileand can be compromised by exposure to

light, changes in temperature and other agents of deterioration. Museums play an important role in the stewardship of acommunity’s shared past, and wehouse our collections in a climatecontrolled, secure storage spacein order to protect them for future generations. When an exhibition isbeing planned, objects and artefacts areselected according to their relevance to the exhibition theme and that’s when these treasures are placed on public display.

The Reach collects objects and materials

and diverse cultural fabric. This includes:• a collection of artefacts that represent the history and diverse cultural heritage of Abbotsford: ethnology, textiles, furnishings, pieces signif icant to agriculture, fishing, transportation, recreation, communications, business and technology.• a collection of archival materials includingdocuments and digital media, photographs,

the history of Abbotsford or pieces held inthe permanent collections.

ABBOTSFORD ARTS CENTRE

$25 Adults | $23 Seniors | $12 Students (plus tax and fee)King’s Music (604-853-5996) or House of James

On March 15th, international fi ddle sensation Barrage 8 will present a show at the Abbotsford Arts Centre along with Calvin Dyck, the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, and the Langley Cello Ensemble.

Barrage 8 is the latest project from John Crozman, Dean Marshall and Tony Moore, the original creators of the hit show Barrage. Utilizing the same energy, panache and innovative stage performance that Barrage was known for, Barrage 8 features all the instruments in the modern string family. The “8” in the name represents a re-imagining of the string octet: 5 violins, viola, cello and double bass. This instrumentation drives a rich and powerful sonic palette that further explores the musical diversity in the Barrage 8 compositions and arrangements.

The concert combines up-beat music with choreography, great lighting effects, video and visual backdrops. The members of Barrage 8 are auditioned, top-notch talent from all over North America. Currently on tour in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, Barrage 8 is doing two stops in Canada on their world tour.

Barrage has entertained millions of people around the globe through international festivals, concert performances, special events and TV appearances. Their performances offer up a diverse fusion of cultures, musical styles and incredible performance vitality. The music combines layered vocal arrangements and pulsating

BARRAGEbeats and rhythms. The young hip cast delivers the show with amazing energy and musical virtuosity that will take your breath away.

Tickets are available at King’s Music or House of James. For more information see www.Barrage8.com

CIVL-FM’s first-ever Fraser Valley Music Awards are now calling for submissions from Fraser Valley musicians. The submission period opened February 1 and runs until March 31. Artists of all genres and ages are encouraged to submit their music to the FVMA Jury by completing the Submission Form at civl.ca/fvma. Winners will be announced at the Fraser Valley Music Awards gala in July. Winners (and in some cases, Nominees) will receive a wide variety of free products and services, including recording studio time, feature media coverage, placement in summer music festivals, consultations with music industry experts, live show recordings, and of course the awards themselves. Events leading up to the main event will include a Battle of the Bands, music industry education workshops, in addition to the launch of a compilation album of Fraser Valley music.

“In addition to superstars like Hedley or Carly Rae and various Juno and Polaris Prize Nominees, a host of incredibly well-regarded Canadian musicians hail from the Valley,” explains CIVL Station Manager Aaron Levy. “We want to both celebrate their work and help build the next generation of success stories by providing them with the tools to reach beyond the Valley.”

In the past two years, CIVL Radio has organized similar events, including a Battle of the Bands whose winners have gone on to the Peak Performance Project (Derrival) and The Fox Seeds competition (John Welsh). Western Jaguar won the 2015 Battle.

The opportunity to produce this event arose due to a $50,000 grant from the Community Radio Fund of Canada successfully landed by Abbotsford’s 101.7 CIVL Radio in the summer of 2015. CRFC is a non-government organization that re-distributes CCD and other commercial broadcast contributions to community and campus radio stations across Canada. Visit their website at communityradiofund.org.

“We’d like our Jury to be able to review rock, folk, blues, jazz, country, pop, punk, metal, classical – a healthy cross-section of the whole Fraser Valley music scene,” says FVMA Coordinator James Kasper. “If you’re in the Fraser Valley and you write, record, perform, or produce music, we want to hear your work.”

For more information on the event, submissions, sponsoring, volunteering, or becoming an official Juror, email James at [email protected]

Coquitlam South

“My family, consisting of my wife, three daughters and I arrived in Canada on the nines. The 9th day, of the 9th month, of 2009. Coming to Canada my goal was always to be in the media industry as it was my background in Trinidad & Tobago. After working for two of the largest and wonderful media organizations in Canada, Corus Entertainment, owner of radio stations

including CKNW and CFOX, and Glacier Media, owner of newspapers including the former TriCities Now, the TriCity News and the Burnaby Now, the opportunity has presented itself for me to utilize the training and experience that I have received, and marry that with the world of entertainment that I have always loved. Being an avid movie buff, even at one point hosting my own movie review website, having this magazine will be a great way to marry my expertise of media sales, with my love of the entertainment industry, that includes movies, music and local events. Also, being an entrepreneur in the industry that I have known for more than two decades will mean that it is more than just a job for me. I will be doing something that I intensely love to do. And I’m glad to realize that dream with What’s On! Coquitlam South.Working with Glacier Media I was able to work within the Coquitlam community and assist in producing publications including the Coquitlam Program Guide put out by the City of Coquitlam, the TriCities Health Guide, and the TriCities Chamber of Commerce Map, so getting to know the various business and establishing those connections and servicing their needs are a great part of why I look forward to providing a new outlet to help them establish their goals. I’m also looking forward to meeting all the community groups in a community I love and am proud to call home! Our Mission Statement: To provide an entertaining voice to the community and to deliver a viable additional outlet for local businesses to reach and interact with potential customers.”

To get into the historical launch issue please contact James on 778-938-2413 or e-mail [email protected] a great community event happening in Coquitlam? Give James a call or drop him an email, he’d love to hear from you!

“There’s so much that I love about my What’s On! magazine business, from meeting so many people, to hearing the positive feedback, to putting it all together. I think the best part though, is when the magazines are delivered and I open the first box to see the new magazine. Very exciting to see it! Something I created!”Cathy Minler, What’s On!
