    Sweet Sixteen Winners

Following are the winners of ou

Glasgow Distributors/Hi-Line FordSweet Sixteen Men’s NCAA Basketbal

    Tournament which concluded Mondaynight.

For the adults, 22-year-old KirstenBense turned in an outstanding brackether only stumble having Gonzaga in

the Final Four. But she had OklahomaNorth Carolina and Villanova there, with

the Wildcats and the Tar Heels battlingfor the title and if indeed it was an upset

she picked it; she took Villanova to winit all. Congrats to Kirsten, long-timeplayer of the Sweet Sixteen bracket

and nally a winner — and old enoughto celebrate with a cold one!

Also mentioned in last Friday’sBuzz was Jim Koessl, the only other

bracketeer to have Villanova (theKansas killers) winning it all. Also a

very good looking bracket as he wasawless on the left side. Virginia wasthe downfall for Koessl.

And placing third was Buckets(a.k.a. Doug Stein). He had Villanova

and North Carolina in the nal but pickedthe Tar Heels, which busted a whole lot

of brackets. Honorable mention goesout to the late-great Wade Brockmierwho also had the Tar Heels over the

Wildcats with the tie-breaker going toBuckets.

For the kids, it was an unusuadisaster as sometimes they outpick the

old foggies. Not so, this time aroundand it drove Breanna crazy getting

them corrected. But after checkingthem over, double checking and triplecorrecting, it was the lovable Fanny Linn

(age 8) taking rst place followed byMylee Rasumusan in 2nd, and Fanny’s

little brother Johnny Lin 3rd. And it wasactually a tie between Johnny and hiseldest sister Mandy, the tie-breake

going to Johnny.Top three placers of each age

group can come pick up their prizesdonated by Glasgow Distributors and

Montana Fish, Wildlie & Parksand the U.S. Fish and Wildlie Service-Charles M. Russell (CMR) NationalWildlie Reuge recently partnered ona study to evaluate the effects o publichunting access and other landscapeactors on elk distributions during theall archery and rifle hunting seasons.Te study took place in the MissouriRiver Breaks area north o the MissouriRiver in hunting districts 621, 622 and631.  In February o 2013, 25 cow elk

were captured in the Missouri RiverBreaks population in hunting district(HD) 621, and 25 cow elk were capturedin the Larb Hills population in HD 622and 631. Elk were radio collared with aglobal positioning system that recordedhourly locations 24 hours a day or twoyears.  During the captures, bloodsamples were taken to determinepregnancy status and to detectantibodies indicating exposure to

diseases. None o the sampled elk werepositive or exposure to brucellosis. Teaverage pregnancy rate was 77%, whichis lower than pregnancy rates romtypically observed in other Montanaelk populations.  Te main objective or this studywas to better understand all elkdistribution and availability o elk tohunters. Elk numbers have been abovethe established elk population objectiveo 1,700-2,000 animals since 2001.Wildlie management generally relies

on increasing harvest o adult emaleelk as the primary management toolor limiting elk population growth andreducing elk populations. However, increased antlerless elk hunting licensequotas in this area have not resultedin sufficient harvest to reduce elkpopulation numbers. Additionally, since the number o elk hunting licensesissued was increased in 2007, harvestsuccess rates have declined. Hunteraccess was thought to be a limiting

actor in elk management in this area.  Researchers categorized hunteraccess across the study area into threecategories: reely accessible to huntersrestricted hunter access, and no publichunter access. Te distributions o theelk were then compared during botharchery and rifle season relative tohunter access and other habitat eaturessuch as cover, terrain, and distance toroads. Overall, elk tended to be lessaccessible during the archery seasonand more commonly selecting or “no

access” areas. Although elk were moreaccessible during rifle season, they werenot always in easy to hunt locations.  In HD 621, 68% o archeryseason elk locations occurred in areasaccessible to hunters, 30% occurred inareas with no hunter access, and 2%occurred in areas with restricted hunteraccess. During rifle season, 91% o elklocations occurred in areas accessibleto hunters, 9% occurred in areas withno hunter access, and

areas with restricted hunter access.  “Many o the elk that were inaccessible during thearchery season in HD 621 were in the Slippery Ann Elk

Viewing Area, which is closed to hunting,” said Tompson.“During the rifle season, we saw these same elk disperse outinto much more publically accessible areas. However, theseelk utilized different strategies to avoid hunters, such as usingdense cover, riparian areas and areas away rom roads orsecurity.”  In hunting districts 622 and 631, 50% o archery seasonelk locations occurred in areas accessible to hunters, 40%occurred in areas with no hunter access, and 10% occurredin areas with restricted hunter access. During rifle season,66% o rifle season elk locations occurred in areas accessibleto hunters, 29% occurred in areas with no hunter access, and5% occurred in areas with restricted hunter access.  “In the Larb Hills, elk were relatively less accessible tohunters during the rifle hunting season than in HD 621.Tese elk more commonly used ‘no access’ areas rather thanhabitat eatures or security,” said Tompson.  Te research emphasized the need to work cooperativelywith landowners to provide adequate hunter access andimplement harvest strategies to achieve elk populationobjectives in this and other areas o the state. One step in thatdirection, Tompson said, is the recently adopted “shoulderseasons” and additional antlerless elk permits in the Region 6

Breaks hunting districts in an effort to reduce elk populations.Tese changes in the elk season are intended to provideadditional elk harvest opportunity, specifically ocused onthe patchwork o private and public lands adjacent to theCMR National Wildlie Reuge.  “Te ultimate goal is to maintain distribution o elkacross public and private land, respect landowner concernsand rights, and provide equitable availability o wildlieresources or all Montanan’s,” said Tompson.  Here is a link to a downloadable PDF version o theull study document: http://fwp.mt.gov/fishAndWildlife/diseasesAndResearch/research/elk/default.html
