WHO’S POINTING NOW? In just about every movie or play about the life of Our Lord, you will find a scene portraying the event given in today’s Gospel. It has all the elements of high drama: a sinful woman caught in the act, outraged “faithful” people (all men, by the way), confrontation, and demands for justice made of Jesus. Of course, it’s a trap. “O.K.” Jesus says, doodling in the dust. “If you’re sinless, throw the first, killing stone.” “Curses; foiled again” they think as they slink away. Only Jesus and the woman remain. Without any recriminations, Jesus sends her on her way with the directive: “Don’t sin any more”. End of scene---end of story. But what a lesson for all of us! Clearly, none of us is sinless. Yet, we regularly accuse, condemn, and dismiss other as “sinners”. Surely you’ve hear the old saying: “When you point your finger at someone, remember that there are three that are pointing back”. How easy it is to judge people, and we regularly do. But Jesus says: “Judge not, lest you yourself be Judged”. (Matthew 5:1). Perhaps some of our Lenten prayers should petition God to make us more like him---merciful, loving, forgiving. Isn’t that what He is all about? Shouldn’t that be what we are all about? “Be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect” makes a lot more sense now.

Last Monday evening we had such a great turnout of students, catechists and parents as we joined other parishes for a Youth Event that was held at Holy Rosary. The evening was led by Mr. Justin Fatica and the Hard as Nails Ministry. It was a positive message of the love and acceptance of God. “We are AMAZING not for what we do but for who we are!“ It was beautiful to see the children of our program actively participating and genuinely moved by the experience. We are so grateful to our neighbors at Holy Rosary for allowing us the opportunity to participate. This was a night that will be held in our hearts forever!

We look forward to this upcoming week when all of our second graders participate in the reenactment of the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet. This particular class session will help the children learn and prepare for the Sacrament of Communion. The children will arrive in class at the regular class time and then the Catechists will bring them up to the Social Hall. Parents are welcome to stay if they promise not to distract the children! After all, who wouldn’t want to see Miss Maria wash the children’s feet and kiss their toes? Maria Lamorgese, Director Ph 914-769-3297, ext. 1 [email protected]

Looking Ahead April 9th: 7th Grade Stations of the Cross at 6:45pm

Families are invited.

Spring Recess Monday, April 15th through Tuesday, April 23rd Classes will resume on Wednesday, April 24th

During these Lenten weekends we have been detailing our changes to the liturgy. There is one more to tell you about, that you may have noticed by now. In the season of Lent, there is no Alleluia sung or spoken. Alleluia is a term of great joy, and our singing the Alleluia is a way of participating in the angels’ worship, and a reminder that the kingdom of heaven is established on earth in the form of the church. In its place we sing an acclamation of praise. This year we are using the Lenten gospel acclamation by Christopher Walker. It is #133 in our hymnal. “Praise and honor, honor and glory, glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!” We omit the Alleluia as a kind of verbal, (and musical) fast, not to depress the mood of the liturgy but to create a sense of anticipation and even greater joy when this familiar word of praise returns when we celebrate Easter and the resurrection of our Lord. In the past, the last singing of the Alleluia has led to some unique, beautiful and interesting customs including “burying the Alleluia” dating back to the Middle Ages. Modern faith formation classes may bury an Alleluia banner somewhere on the parish grounds, or place the word in a plastic Easter egg, as part of the Easter morning Easter egg hunt. In some French churches, the children of the choir would have a mock funeral, placing the words in a small casket. In the eleventh-century a hymn, titled, Alleluia, Dolce Carmen, was written as a beautiful farewell, it has been translated under the title, Alleluia, Song of Gladness. “We do not now deserve to sing the Alleluia forever; Guilt forces us to dismiss you, O Alleluia for the time approaches in which we must weep for our sins.” The medieval bishop and writer, William Durandus (1237-1296) explained that “we part from the Alleluia as from a beloved friend, whom we have embraced many times”. Easter is just two weeks away, Sunday, April 21

st, and

the Alleluia will return after its Lenten rest. We invite you to sing it with incredible flourish as an expression of our Easter joy.
