April is Foot Health Awareness Month

Feet are usually not a topic of conversation,

but if there are problems or pain with our

feet, it can affect our whole well-being.

Mobility is impaired when we have foot

problems.

Your feet must last a lifetime, and most

Americans log an amazing 75,000 miles on

their feet by the time they reach age 50!!

Regular foot care can make sure your feet

are up to the task. With proper detection,

intervention and care, most foot and ankle

problems can be lessened or prevented.

The most common concerns include:

Arthritis, Gout, Diabetic Wound Care,

Peripheral Arterial Disease, Peripheral

Neuropathy, Bursitis, Foot and Ankle Injuries,

Muscle and Tendon Problems, Skin Disorders,

Toe Joint and Nerve Disorders, and Toenail

Problems.

The problems and conditions need to be

addressed by a Podiatrist. They are licensed

doctors of podiatric medicine (DPM) if they

have those initials after their name. The DPM

means a physician has completed years of

rigorous foot and ankle training in podiatric

medical school and hospital-based residency

training, making him or her uniquely qualified

to care for this part of the body. Find an

APMA member podiatrist to address any

problems with your feet.

I hope you are able to get out and enjoy our

Spring here in Wisconsin!

14 | VERONA SENIOR CENTER

Organ & Body Donation

I lost a friend to a brain aneurysm several years ago. She was 37 years old. She was there one day

with a huge smile on her face and gone the next. After facing the tragic reality that she was not go-

ing to wake up, her family felt that she would want to donate anything that could save or improve

the life of someone else. This was confirmed on her WI driver’s license so there was no question in

the minds of her family. During her celebration of life her mother proudly shared that the last thing

her daughter did before leaving this physical world was save 8 people’s lives, including 5 children,

and improve the lives of dozens more through eye and tissue donation. I learned later how heart-

warming it was for her family, including her twin sister, to hear from and receive cards from the re-

cipients of her donation.

Facts about Organ Donation:

You can save 8 lives through organ donation and over 75 through eye and tissue donation.

Registration is easy! You can register when you update your driver’s license or I.D.

Be sure your POA-HC forms are consistent and your family knows your wishes.

60% of WI residents are committed to donating their organs, eyes and tissues upon their death.

Facts about Body Donation:

In order to donate you must complete a registration packet and submit it ahead of time.

Your family can have a funeral before your body is donated.

If you wish, you can donate your eyes to a person and still donate your body to science, however

if you donate organs or tissue, you will be ineligible for body donation.

Body donation is an essential part of anatomy education for health care professionals and can’t

be adequately replicated through textbooks, computers or animal dissection.

Sometimes bodies are declined due to being autopsied, organ donation or certain health condi-

tions. In case this happens back up arrangements need to be made.

 Facts about Brain Donation:

ONE donation can power decades of research there’s no physical disfigurement from donating.

Individuals who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment, or who have

a parent who has been diagnosed with these disorders will be considered for donation.

Enrollment in UW-Madison research studies (or being the biological parent to someone enrolled)

is required for donation.

22 | VERONA SENIOR CENTER

Hello from the Director

Spring has sprung and we are ready!! As you may have noticed we are updating and upgrading parts of the

Senior Center. We will be having some AVHC work and some spring maintenance work done. And as

the weather warms we will have some outdoor maintenance done, too. This work will not disturb any

programming.

Speaking of programming, we have a number of new programs this month, Be sure to check out all the

Earth Day events on page three ,,,.wow! And here are a few others we are very excited about:

Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin and offering FREE Comprehensive Medication Reviews on

Thursday, April 23rd. Registered Pharmacists will be at the Senior Center to offer one-on-one

appointments to discuss medication usage. To make an appointment please call the Verona Senior

Center at 608-845-7471. Spaces are limited!

Diabetic Foot Care-Starting this month the Senior Center will be offering Diabetic Foot Care. This

service will be available for $25 and will take place on the fourth Tuesday of every month. See page 13

for details. (If you’d be interested in being a Foot Care volunteer, please call Alasa.)

NEW!! Dance Aerobics – Zumba like dance class: 8 week series, Thursdays April 2nd—

May 21. Cost $35. Please make payment to Verona Senior Center. Join new instructor

Rachel for an upbeat, energetic cardiovascular workout with rhythmic dance sequences like Zumba

that is sure to get your body moving. More details on page 12.

Also this month we will be celebrating our volunteers. Our Volunteer Appreciation event will take

place on Monday, April 6, at 11:30 AM. If you are a VSC volunteer please join us for a presentation

from Skip Jones entitled “How to Be a Hero.” Lunch provided by Tuvalu. Please RSVP by calling the

front desk at 608-845-7471.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Here are some from the box along with my responses in green.

Have a Sing-a-long—We will look for a time to try this again. If you are interested in leading an

ongoing group please let Alasa know.

Have a check-in on Schedules Plus that says “meet with staff.” - When someone meets with staff such

as Case Management this information is documented and data captured already.

Could we have a beginning Bridge and/or other card games? - We would love this but we’d need a

volunteer to start and run the group(s). If you are interested in leading this please contact Alasa.

Thank you for all the ideas. We look forward to seeing you at the Senior Center.

Stephanie Ehle, Director
