Once Europe takes over the seas in the 1400s and 1500s, and Asia decides to attempt isolation, the West became an overbearing driver of world events. The Opium Wars, spheres of influence in China, the plantations in the Caribbean – all these world events were driven by European powers, mostly England. Also noteworthy, the U.S. really isn’t a major world power til after WW I – 1914.
