Urban Design is the way buildings and open spaces, including streets, fit together and work together. Urban Design is the process of shaping the physical setting for life in cities, towns and villages. It is the art of making places. It involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, and culture coming together as a place making agenda. Lots of people talk about urban design, the way the planning system requires good urban design, the way highway schemes should be based on its principles and how it can help us lead healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. But does this matter to you? If you influence the built environment in any way, then you have a role to play in making sure it is well designed. If you can secure good urban design through your work you will be helping to create a good place people will value. You may find you feel pretty pleased and so you should – you would have achieved something worth while. Want to learn more? Have a look through this brochure and see how you can improve your urban design understanding and expertise.

With support from CABE and the Arts Council we run foundation courses, workshops and site visits for local authority staff from multi-disciplinary backgrounds in the North Northamptonshire Area on a number of topics. We also facilitate a network of interested officers and Design Champions. This brochure lists all events we are running from April 2009 to September 2010. It explains the different types of events you can attend and includes

short descriptions of each one. We use a large team of expert practitioners and trainers so that each session is led by someone who really knows about the subject. We keep numbers down – a max of 36 people per session and we include discussions, group work and games or

Highly practical sessions relating to today’s key design, cultural and sustainable design challenges. Each workshop will explain a design or cultural related skill, tool or policy requirement to help you deal with design and culture within your job.

WH O A R E T H E Y F O R ?

They have been designed with urban designers, culture and regeneration officers and built environment professionals who wish to expand their skills and refresh their knowledge.

The workshops have been categorised to allow choice to meet your requirements. However for those with no prior urban design training or experience you will get the most from the sessions if you already have attended the workshop Urban Design Fundamentals workshop.

For those officers who are responsible for influencing the planning process and development there is also a Planning set of workshops designed for the non-planner working in the planning environment .

C H O O S E ?

Pick the workshops that you feel suit your needs best. To help you decide, here are some suggestions:

• If you are a streets officer or development control planner who is just starting out – how about learning how best to read plans and communicate and negotiate design issues? That’s workshops 2 and 3.

• If you are a senior development control or major projects planner – how about learning more about creating inclusive and resource efficient places? That’s workshops 6 and 8.

• If you are an urban designer who needs to take responsibility for your authority’s Building for Life assessments - how about attending workshop 15?

• If you are a cultural officer responsible for liasing with planning over major development but want to know more about the world or planning—that’s workshops 3 and 11.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

Events are free to local authorities within the North

Northants area. If you are outside this area, the

events are £50 for a half day and £100 for a full

day.

Some might be more ‘accurate’ than others, while some might be downright misleading. This workshop will look at the different types of information to be gleaned from graphics. It will cover issues like angles of vision, scale, verified details, viewing positions, and help you learn how to best use graphics to assess and describe schemes. The workshop will help you understand graphics, using scale rulers, tracing paper and grids. These are skills that can help you interpret design ideas when discussing or negotiating schemes with others. Dates: May 2010 Time: 9.30– 4.00 Location: NNDC Offices or NCC Facilitator: NCC and Transform Movement is a fundamental requirement for any urban area. The structure of our transport network, and the way we understand and manage accessibility, can have a huge influence on the way our city functions and performs. This is an issue that crosses the planning/transportation worlds because of the interrelationships between accessibility, travel, land uses, density and public realm use. The workshop will look at Manual for Streets guidance and how this has been translated to a Northamptonshire level, with the Northamptonshire County Council Place Making Guide and the Building for Life Process. Suitable for: Regeneration Officers, Development Control, Major Projects, Strategic Arts & Cultural Officers, Highways Engineers

Dates: 16 June 09 7 October 09 Time: 9.30–4.30 Location: NNDC Offices Trainer: Transform and Oxford Brookes Over the years, design has picked up its own language. Jargon and ‘trip off the tongue’ are often used without people really understanding what is being said. This workshop will demystify design terms and help give you the confidence to understand, describe and explain design issues in a clear and responsible way. This workshop invites participants to apply the approaches and ideas presented to them in the morning to a site within the NNJPU area. In small groups, participants will design a layout for the site at a scale of 1:500 using the wooden block models provided. This method allows designers and non-designers alike to work through the principles of place making in the context of a real site. Feedback from each group will follow and lead into a discussion on how better to embed the principles into everyday practice. Suitable for: Regeneration Officers, Development Control, Major Projects, Strategic Arts & Cultural Officers, Highways Engineers

Dates: 22nd Sept 2010 Time: 1.30–4.30 Location: NNDC Trainer: TBC We could have called this design and climate change, or design and sustainability. But there are so many events around called that, we thought it was best to get to the nub of the matter for this particular session. So this workshop will look specifically at how development and public realm projects can first reduce demand for energy, water and other resources; and second meet demand in the most efficient way, examining options like renewable energy, local generation and combined heat and power. The workshop will also help you make sense of the numbers and standards around at the moment. It will explain key resource rules of thumb, showing the amounts of energy, water etc used and generated through or by different options Suitable for: Regeneration Officers, Development Con-trol, Major Projects, Strategic Arts & Cultural Officers, Highways Engineers

sports and cultural agencies together the Town and

Country Planning Association resulting in the Culture and

Sport Planning Toolkit (CSPT) – recently published on

the Living Places website www.living-places.org.uk .

They have also researched and published appropriate

standard charges for arts, museums, libraries and

archives for use by local authorities in negotiations with

developers and others. The details of these standard

charges have now also been published on the Living

Places web site.

This seminar is aimed at both planning and regeneration

officers together with officers working in Culture and

Leisure. It is designed to give culture & leisure officers an

overview of current spatial planning issues, the planning

process in England and the importance of engaging with

regional and local spatial planning exercises. It will also

enable planners and regeneration officers to understand

how culture and sport is integral to creating sustainable

communities as part of growth in Northants. All

participants will learn about the new CSPT and other

resources available on the Living Places website. They

Dates: June 2010 Time: 9.30–4 Location: WBC Trainer: English Heritage The Building in Context TOOLKIT grew out of the publication 'Building in Context' published by EH and CABE in 2001. The purpose of the publication was to stimulate a high standard of design when development takes place in historically sensitive contexts. The founding principle is that all successful design solutions depend on allowing time for a thorough site analysis and character appraisal of context.

The Building in Context TOOLKIT aims to:

• to help local authorities plan for already developed areas in the most efficient way, while making them more attractive places in which to live and work and conserving our cultural heritage

• promote sustainable new and re-used development that doesn't sacrifice what future generations will value for the sake of short-term and often illusory gains

• to communicate to professional and community groups a wider understanding of how new interventions (such as new buildings, structures and spaces) can take place more successfully in historic areas

• to help those making decisions that affect sensitive

areas to reach effective and balanced decisions and a more efficient service

to help local communities with the process of taking long term decisions about their built environment in a confident and sustainable way. This training event will work through the toolkit, using local examples to test the toolkit.
