You are not alone. There is no doubt that, for first time mums and dads-to-be especially, the thought of labour can be daunting and, for some, even terrifying. But believe it or not, childbirth can be a wonderful experience. Here we reveal our top ten tips for a positive birth experience:

As soon as you become pregnant you will encounter mums with a birth horror story that they are all too keen to share. Do yourself a favour and politely tell them that you would rather not hear about it! Fear in labour will make it harder for your body to do its stuff so you need to surround yourself with positivity. There will be mums out there who had a great birth and those are the people you need to hear. Check out www.tellmea-goodbirthstory.com which is great for positive birth stories. They even team up mums-to-be with a birth buddy which is well worth considering;

Labour and birth can be unpredictable and may not always go to plan but it can still help to have some idea as to how you would like your experience to be. If you and your birth partner spend some time thinking about the kind of birth you want it will help you feel a bit more

Ten Tips for a Great Labour

prepared. Who, for example, do you want in the room with you when you give birth? Do you want your partner to cut the cord? What kind of pain relief will you consider? All of this can be recorded in your birth preferences;

Although it appears to be a commonly held belief that walking for miles is a good way to get labour started it really is best that you take it relatively easy in the last few days of your pregnancy. Too much exercise will only wear you out and you need to preserve your strength for labour;

When things get challenging during labour try to remember that each contraction is taking you one step closer to meeting your baby;

Make sure that you eat during your labour - even if you don’t feel like it. First time labour can take a while and the last thing you want to do is run out of steam. Making sure you eat little and often can really help. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks though, tempting as it may be to stuff down a cake;

Think about your birth position! Adopting a more upright position can help your labour for a number of

reasons one of which is that it gives the baby more space resulting in less pressure on pelvic joints and nerves and less pain;

Consider using a birthing pool. Water is a great form of natural pain relief and is a lovely calm way for your baby to enter the world;

You can feel vulnerable in labour but try not to let that stop you from speaking up if you don’t understand what is being said or done. It’s your body and your baby. If you don’t feel comfortable then your birth partner can help or you

You may think that you don’t need or want pain relief and that is great. However no one knows

how they will react during labour. If you feel overwhelmed and opt for drugs having

wanted a natural birth, try not to beat yourself up! Don’t waste any of your time with your new baby feeling like you have already failed. You haven’t;

Finally, a positive mindset really can help you have a better birth so believe in your body’s ability to have your baby. Remember that women have been giving birth for thousands of years and if they can do it so can you. A good antenatal class will help you understand how labour and birth works and will help dispel some of the anxiety you may have;

I don’t think any mum would argue that labour isn’t challenging but it can also be an

amazing and empowering experience.

Research by Galt Toys has revealed that some new dads take more than five months to feel confidence in their parenting. The study of 2,000 parents found that dads were particularly concerned about, struggling to follow mum’s instructions, worrying about leaving the house alone with baby in tow and feeling completely overwhelmed with basic daily baby care.

The study also found that, although excitement was the biggest emotion for dads before their child was born, being scared and nervous was a problem for almost half. That fear and nervousness subsided almost by half in the weeks after the child was born, however the feeling of being overwhelmed almost doubled once the baby arrived.

Parenting expert Dr Miriam Stoppard, spokesperson for Galt Toys said: “A baby wants to bond with its dad just as much as its mum and early interaction with babies and toddlers is absolutely crucial to their development. A lack of contact between a baby and its dad means they are both missing out on critical bonding opportunities, which will help dad’s

confidence grow creating a parental bond

for life.”

Dr Miriam Stoppard offers some advice for new parents:

1. If possible dad should hold his newborn baby within the first hour after birth against the bare skin of his chest so the baby can bond immediately with him. He might try changing the baby’s nappy on his own within the first 24 hours too.

2. It’s good for dads to be given the chance to do things their own way without mums writing lists for them. Dad’s way isn’t necessarily the wrong way it’s just different.

3. To give himself confidence dad should have a go at bathing his own baby unaccompanied within the first few days of the baby’s birth. Don’t worry dads your hands are big and strong enough to keep the baby safe.

4. Sometimes it’s hard but mum should try to resist the temptation to laugh at dad’s efforts or criticise saying “you’re doing that wrong”.

5. Dad should try using his own taste to choose his baby’s clothes and then dress them by himself during the first week after birth. It’s not helpful for mum to say “don’t put him/her in that”. It dents dad’s confidence and motivation. Dad’s taste is just different from hers and worth tolerating.

6. Dad should have a go at packing the baby bag within the first week.

7. It’s demoralising for dads when mum says “the baby prefers it this way”. The baby can have many preferences that will include dad’s.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexplained death of a baby where no cause is found. While SIDS is rare, it can still happen and there are steps parents can take to help reduce the chance of this tragedy occurring.

Here are some tips for safer sleep from the Lullaby Trust. Although we don’t yet know how to completely prevent SIDS, it is possible to significantly lower the chances of it happening by following this advice. Sharing books is a wonderful way to help your child learn to talk and learn about the world - it’s also the ideal opportunity to share a cuddle. Helping your children enjoy reading is one of the most important things you can do as a parent and it’s well worth the investment of your time and energy. Here are our top tips for enjoying books with your little ones:

• Make this time together a special time when you hold your kids and share the pleasure of a story without the distractions of TV or telephones. You may be surprised to find that a well-written children’s book is often as big a delight to you as it is to the kids.

• By far the most effective way to encourage your children to love books and reading is to read aloud to them, and the earlier you start, the better. Even a baby of a few months can see pictures, listen to your voice, and turn cardboard pages.

• As well as reading the story, talk about the pictures. If there’s a picture of a dog, talk about a dog that you know. Don’t put any pressure on your child to name the pictures, but if she copies your words, praise her and say the words again for her.

• Visit your library for different books – it’s free to join, and there is often a wonderful selection of books available.

• Make books available to your little ones - simply having books, magazines, and newspapers around your home will help children view them as part of daily life.

• Stories and rhymes can be shared with the whole family so why not invite siblings or other family members to join in?

• It’s good to share favourite books again and again. Repetition helps children to understand and remember the language they hear.

• And don’t stop taking the time to read aloud once your children have learned to read for themselves. At this stage, encourage them to read to you some of the time. This shared enjoyment will continue to strengthen your children’s interest and appreciation of books.
