For some students, being late for first period means they are losing minutes out of the same subject everyday. Leaving early also creates distracons at a busy me of the day. Students are busy filling in their agendas and packing their bags for dismissal. We know that some appointments can’t be avoided however picking your child up 10 minutes before the end of the day should be avoided if possible.

Issue #3

Welcome to November! I am so proud of the staff and students at Fallingbrook. Recently, we celebrated student achievement at our first Recognition Assembly of the year. We welcomed more than 80 friends and family which was great to see. We recognized our many groups who meet weekly with staff leaders, our numerous athletic teams, and our newly appointed Leadership team. Each classroom from grades 1-8 have a class representative who will meet monthly with me to discuss what’s happening in the Falcon nest and any concerns that they may have. It is really important to me that our students’ voices are heard and I am looking forward to working with this group to help create a new vision statement for our school.

Last week the DDSB recognized our Volunteers of Distinction from each school. We congratulate Natasha Stanzel who was chosen by our past SCC and staff for all of her hours of service to help make Fallingbrook such a great school. Natasha and her family have relocated to the Ottawa area and we know that she will make a difference there as well. Thank you Natasha!

I hope that you are feeling connected to your child(ren)’s teacher(s) . We have made a commitment as a school to be communicating the learning that is going on in each classroom. There are so many great activities that are rich with inquiry and it is important that the conversations that are happening in the classroom are spilling over into the home. When home and school work together to support the student, great things happen. At our November parent/teacher conferences your child(ren) will share their learnings and this is the perfect time for you to ask how you can support their learning journey. If you haven’t signed up for an interview time, please contact the teacher. Confirmation slips will be sent home by Thursday with your appointment time. Please drop by and say hello when you are in the building! With the clocks having changed this past weekend, it is a perfect “time” to remind everyone how important it is to be on time each day. Supervision begins at 8:35AM. Students should NOT be arriving before this time. Our entry bell rings at 8:45AM and students should be in their classrooms ready for announcements and O’Canada at 8:50AM. We still have quite a number of students coming into the office for late slips. This creates a lot of traffic in the office not to mention a distraction in the classroom when the child comes in late. For some students, being late for first period means they are losing minutes out of the same subject everyday. Leaving early also creates distractions at a busy time of the day. Students are busy filling in their agendas and packing their bags for dismissal. We know that some appointments can’t be avoided however picking your child up 10 minutes before the end of the day should be avoided if possible.

Principal’s Message Continued

At dismissal you can meet your child outside at their proper entry/exit door. Students are not permitted to exit through the front doors so please do not ask them to meet you there. It confuses them. I would strongly encourage you to use the “Kiss n Ride” before and after school. Students are safely dropped off and picked up and this is supervised by a staff member.

Once again, we are asking all visitors to check into the office. This is protocol and there will be no exceptions to this safety procedure that we have in place. We have instructed our students to report any adult in the building without a visitor’s tag. If you are dropping your child off late, they will be walked to the classroom by a staff member. Thank you for following these procedures.

Many of our classes have participated in excursions in the last 2 months. We love arranging these fun opportunities for our students however we do rely on volunteers to fulfill the requirements for appropriate supervision. Please consider getting your Police check so that we can continuing to offer these trips. Mrs. Hoover will be happy to provide you with a school letter to accompany your paperwork.

The Autumn temperatures can be unpredictable so please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed to be outside for 40 minutes at lunchtime. Soon, they will need hats, mitts and boots!

Thank you for sharing your child(ren) with us each day….we are enjoying every minute!

Eco Club

ECO schools across Canada were invited to take the Waste Reduction Challenge during the week of October 16-20th. Fallingbrook took the challenge of reducing classroom waste by having a competition between classes. Congratulations to Mrs. Fox, Mrs. Smalley, Ms. Gordon and Mrs. Hansen’s class for leading the challenge! We know you all enjoyed your ice cream for winning! We also recognize our custodial staff Mr. Nancekevill and Mr. Lemay for supporting this initiative. The kindergarten classes at Fallingbrook have been busy planting bulbs in our pollinator garden for the spring. We look forward to seeing the many colours of flowers that will grow in the garden after the winter. We also thank our primary teachers for using this outdoor space to enhance learning by making connections to the land. Wednesday October 25th was “Take Me Outside day”, an initiative sponsored by ECO schools to encourage students to take learning outside for at least an hour of their school day. Thank you to all of our teachers who participated in this program. Our ECO Summit is coming up on November 24th. We have three students who will be participating in a whole day event at the Board office. Congratulations to Shirley Li, Tanisha Zaman and Abby Brydson who will be attending this conference with Mrs. Meunier. Finally, we thank our families for making the effort to continue our Boomerang Lunch initiative throughout the school year. We can’t do it without you! Mrs. Meunier & Mrs. Pasternak (ECO Leads)

PROGRESS REPORTS

These reports go home on Wednesday November 15th and conferences are held Thursday, November 16th evening and Friday, November 17th in the morning.

Learning Skills and Work Habits, So Very Important!

The development of learning skills and work habits is an integral part of a student's learning. Assessing, evaluating, and reporting on the achievement of curriculum expectations and on the demonstration of learning skills and work habits separately allows teachers to provide information to the parents and student that is specific to each of the two areas of achievement. The development of these 6 learning skills /work habits (Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-regulation) are needed to succeed in school and in life and begins early in a child's schooling. As students move through the grades, they develop and then consolidate their learning skills and work habits in preparation for post-secondary education and the world of work. (Growing Success p.10) The November Progress report will be reporting on the above mentioned 6 learning skills and work habits.

Head Lice

Treating head lice is often a two step process involving the use of a treatment product and physical removal of the nits from the hair. Most products require two treatments, 7 to 10 days apart, to kill newly hatched lice. After the second treatment, check the head twice a week for four weeks to make sure all lice are gone. Wash bedding, head gear, towels, and clothing used within the last couple of days in hot water and dry in a hot dryer for 15 minutes. The heat of the water, or the hot drying cycle, will kill any live lice and nits. All members of the household should be checked.

You can choose to treat the lice at home following the information provided in the Region of Durham's Pediculosis Information Sheet, or you may prefer to use one of the many pay-for-service treatment options.

Tips To Help Keep Your Child Lice Free

Teach your child not to share hats, helmets, brushes, combs, hair clips, ties, and ribbons with anyone else

Put a drop or two of rosemary of thyme oil on brushes or combs to deter lice

Tie back long hair to keep it away from the face

Add a drop or two of tea tree oil to your shampoo to deter lice

Consider washing your child's hair less often as lice are attracted to clean hair. Some parents use mousse, gel, or hairspray to help prevent lice

Dates of Significance

Hindu Heritage Month Ontario is home to a large and vibrant Hindu community. Since the first Hindu immigrants arrived in Canada at the beginning of the 20th century, Hindu Canadians from across Ontario have made significant contributions across all fields: science, education, medi-cine, law, politics, business, culture and sports. Hindu Canadians have helped build Ontario into the multicultural success story that it is and have helped to build this province into the best place to live, work and raise families. They continue to help foster growth, prosperity and innovation throughout Ontario. By proclaiming the month of November as Hindu Heritage Month, the Province of Ontario recognizes the important contributions that Hindu Canadians have made to Ontario’s social, economic, political and cultural fabric. Hindu Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about Hindu Canadians and the important role that they have played and continue to play in communities across Ontario.

Treaties Week November 5-11 Last year, The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) announced that Ontario had designated the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week to promote education.  Treaties Recognition Week was introduced to honour the im-portance of Treaties and to help Ontarians learn more about Treaty rights and Treaty relationships.  Treaties Recognition Week pro-vides an opportunity for educators to begin planning curriculum-linked learning activities about Treaties and will help build aware-ness and a greater understanding of why we acknowledge the land/territory we are on.

November 11 - Remembrance Day (Canadian) World War I came to an end at 11 o'clock on November 11, 1918 and special services have been held on this day ever since the first one in 1919. This day was known as Armistice Day for many years. In 1931 the Canadian Parliament changed the name to Remembrance Day and November 11th is now a time to remember those who served Canada in past wars and also those who sacrificed their lives in military service. At Fallingbrook Public School, we will be acknowledging Remembrance Day by having an assembly on Friday, November 10th at 10:30 a.m.

November 16 – Louis Riel Day The year 1885 was very difficult for Ontario Métis. During that year the Northwest Resistance took place where Métis took a stand and fought for Métis rights and the Métis way-of-life. The Canadian government suppressed the resistance and executed Métis leader Louis Riel for treason. Ontario Métis were also labeled as traitors and for generations the Métis in Ontario had to hide their culture and heritage. Despite this oppression, the Métis in Ontario preserved their way-of-life and passed it on to current genera-tions. Today the strength of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is a testament to the courage of their ancestors.

Louis Riel Day is held every year across the homeland on November 16, the anniversary of Riel’s execution in 1885. While Louis Riel Day marks one of the great tragedies of Canadian history, its recognition demonstrates their continuing resilience and determi-nation to regain their rights and preserve their way-of-life in Ontario and across the Homeland. To commemorate Louis Riel Day, MNO citizens and communities hold events across the province to recognize the many contribu-tions of the Métis to Canada, to celebrate Métis culture and to highlight the struggles that Métis continue to face

November 25 – Holodomor Memorial Day The Holodomor is the name given to the genocide by famine that occurred in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. As many as 10 million Ukrainians perished as victims of a man-made famine under Joseph Stalin’s regime, with 25,000 dying each day at the peak of the famine. The name Holodomor is the Ukrainian word for "plague of hunger" or “death inflicted by starvation” derived from two words, “holod” – starvation/famine and “moryty” – to inflict death. Holodomor Memorial Day was introduced on February 18, 2009 as the first tri-sponsored Private Member's Bill of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. On April 9, 2009 the Province of Ontario unanimously passed Bill 147 – The Holodomor Memorial Day Act, which calls for the fourth Saturday in November to be a day of remembrance. The Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration was assigned responsibility for the administration of the Act on October 28, 2009.
