Why a Skilled Trade?

• The average annual salary for a skilled trades person is 25% higher than the average Canadian wage ($50,000 vs. $40,000)

• The average apprenticeship lasts between 2-5 years with 80% of the training done on the job while being PAID.

• A certified journeyperson’s starting salary average is approximately $52,000 while a University graduate’s starting salary average is about $45,000

• One in five new jobs in the province is expected to be in the skilled trades.

Pathways to the Trades

Three ways to OYAP!

• All students taking Co-op in a Skilled Trade

• Any Student taking Co-op in a skilled trade who registers as an apprentice with the Ministry of Training

• All students taking an Accelerated OYAP Level ONE program

Regional Accelerated OYAP

• In partnership with surrounding boards: DDSB, DCDSB, KPRDSB, PVNCCDSB, TLDSB

• Exit program in semester 2 of grade 12

• Students receive part 1 of apprenticeship training through the Training Delivery Agent (i.e. Durham College)

• Students are in Co-op , but also

earning credits in apprenticeship training

What is a Scholarship or Bursary

Scholarship A scholarship is a sum of money or other aid

granted to a student, because of merit, need, etc., to pursue his or her studies.

Bursary A bursary is a monetary award that is granted on

the basis of financial need.

Awards are for students that demonstrate an excellence in their field.

Awards may be given for academics and/or extra-curricular involvement

Ontario Student Assistant Program

OSAP is made up of grants and no payment interest free loans while you are in school full-time

It is issued and evaluated by the Ontario Government based off of family/personal income

Money is issued yearly through loans and grants

You may need to start paying back your OSAP loan 6 months after your study period ends

OSAP APPLICATION

You may begin your application in grade 12 to receive an estimate value

Actual Values are determined when offers of admissions are confirmed

The OSAP website (osap.gov.on.ca) provides a number of resources such as a OSAP Aid estimator, Repayment Calculator and helpful tips

Money is not granted until September after you have enrolled in school

OSAP Changes for 2017-2018

Free tuition for eligible students

OSAP will cover the cost of college or

university tuition if: your parents earn $50,000 or less per year, and

you’re going to study full-time

Students may still earn grants up to a Parental Income of approximately $170,000

Many students from middle and lower income families will receive grants that exceed the value of their tuition.

Ontario First Generation Bursary

Aid for post-secondary students who are in financial need, and attending a publicly funded university or college. Parents must NOT have done full or part-time studies anywhere in the world.

Value - $1,000 – 3,500

Contact the financial aid office of the school that you will be attending

You meet the financial need criteria defined by your school.

Banks offer student Loans or a Line of Credit

Students must make monthly payments

Most students will require a co-signer
