Dear Friends; 400 hiuview driveLEBANON, OREGON 97355PHONE: 503-258-2855

Your generosity really astounds us. We know that some of you are ontight budgets and that scrnie of you congregations had your own problems thisyear; yet you gave. We truly thank God for your abundant faith and generouslove.

Our annual fincincial report in this letter gives you a partial picture of what your faith in God shown through prayer and support has been doingway over here.

But the financial report is only a partial picture. j'ji^^Kdoeso't s^w thetwo young friends who shared a pair of sneekers so that they co^O''botl^*pIa '^'*~~^soccer on the dirt court. One wore just the left shoe and the other wore justthe right. It doesn't show the boy who has been rejected becciuse he'-S mentallyslow, but has found kindness in the Christians and wants to be with us all thetime. It doesn't show the insecure girl being raised by relatives who don'tWcuit her since her parents died, or the boy who tears up the tissue flowersthe class is making for their mothers because his mother ran away. Itdoesn't show 20 some kids singing and learning about God's love and theChristian life. Thank you for giving.

    LET'S PLAY RELIGION

Sandi likes to play house. She offers her dolls crackers and marsh-mellows and pretends that the dolls munch them. Of course, the dolls neverbenefit from these treats. So Sandi must eventually eat the treats herself.

Our neighbors do something similar. They regularly offer choicefruits and meats to their dead parents and grandparents. Thus, they hope totake good care of their loved ones. But physical food can't feed spirits. The dead can't benefit from fruits and meats. So in the end, the livingfamily must eat the food itself. They can never be certain that they havesatisfactorily provided for their loved ones.

Oh how it could put their hearts at ease to know that God, whosustains life on earth, also provides for those on the other side of death, and there is nothing we need to do or Ccui do.

I WISH I HAD KNOWN HIM

Recently, we were priviledged to visit with J. ^ssell Morse, thegreat pioneer missionary. Now f he Tssage. Alegend in his own lifetime, Sis vast contribution to the cause of Christ isimmeasurable. About 80,000 Christians in North Burma are a result of the workhe started. His testimony has inspired countless young people (me, for one)to fulltime Christian service.

Another missionary sage who has shaped my ministry recently isMcGayjran. Also oyer^Aolds contributions to the spread of the

"gospel are staggering. Some'missionaries even claim that he has done more formissions thaui any man since Apostle Paul.

Both J. Russell Morse and Donald McGavran possess a spirit that isready to help and encourage yet also ready to leam from others. So, I mentioned my acquaintance with Dr. McGavreUi to Brother Morse, and he replied,"Oh, do you know him? Donald McGavran and I were in the same boy scout j^tiypopin high school." ^

one sentence sparked an explosion in my mind. What kind of a

troop leader could help pave the way for two of the greatest living missionaries?I wxsh I could have known him! Were there other influential people in theirlives who have since been forgotten?

It s no coincidence that some congregations yearafter-yaar inspireyoung people to enter missions. It's not by chance that certain Bible collegesare known as mission-minded schools. Somewhere in those groups are men andwomen so committed to missions that they ignited the same committment in others.

// In every gangling, clumsy kid is a fantastic potential to be a man of^God, if some mature Christian could just ignite his committment. May you be aK missionary-igniter.

    FREE PLANE FARE

    J. Russell Morse and I were riding through our district when heshouted over the bus noises, "The more I see, the more I'm impressed with thegreat opportunity for the gospel you have here."

Yes, I said, within ten years half-a-million people are exoectedto be living here."

Later Brother Morse added, "Why, you could use several good couplesout here ..."

"Probably, but I don't know how to reciruit them. I tried all lastin the states, and didn't get even one person to come."

They need to see it I" he said. "If they saw what I see, they'drealize the opportunities that God has here."

"I agree. I've offered free one-way plane tickets to anvone who willtry working here, and stmzaravsff^r-had That offer still holds. If you re not happy with doing just" some thing'^for GoJT'. ..If you want the Lord to get the most use oossible out of youIf you want your faith exercised to the limits (I Peter 1:7)If you want to be on the front line against sin (Romans 15:20)

... then I want to talk to you.Write me! I think I've got something you'd like to hear.

  • Volunteers started coining, 20 - 50 - ICQ and over. No otherday had as many volunteers show up as God provided for Tuen Mun.

The chaiirman brought six bundles of leaflets. He and Ithought there were 500 in a bundle, or the 3,000 he had set aside. "Isthat enough?" He asked.

"I don't think so." How could I,with 8,000 homes? So hesent for more. But we were wrong. Each bundle had 1,000 not 500 leaflets. So about 8,000 leaflets were passed out in Tuen Mun that day.

The response has been too good and willing workers too few.We have received over 100 names to followup. Many are children, but not all.Two adults really want to believe, but have doubts. One teen Christianjust moved here, and couldn't find a church home. Others want to study theBible more or be baptized.

WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS for the younq faith that is beginningto develop in these few; for more workers in this ripe area (We've onlyfollowed up 1/3 of the prospects so far.); for places to hold Bible studiesin each area (The prospects are really spread out.); for Joyce's health asshe battles_ a cold during the last month before the baby is due; for starting a Christian fellowship in the city of Tsuen Wan that we and ^'Jayfull and"Helen Jew feel a burden for doing as soon as possible.

Just as we were finishing supper on May 10th, Joyce discoveredit was time to go to the hospital. We live twenty miles from the hospital, It could easily take two hours to travel, so we didn't want to wastemuch time. I prayed for a safe trip before we left.

Praise the Lord, we caught a bus-van right away, and therewasn't much traffic. We'd ridden in bus-vans many time, and none hadever jbroken down, but it did that night in a very unlikely place toget another ride. "Lord," I prayed, "this is in your hands. Help usto keep trusting you." No sooner had we crossed the street than anotherride was available.

Joyce had wanted a private room instead of being in the 16-bedmaternity ward, but there was a mix-up at the hospital and no rooms wereavailable. 'But, the ward didn't have any beds either, so they put herin a private room meant for nurses,at ward prices. Praise the Lord forhis economy.

Steven Linville Anderson, a fine 6 lbs. 8 ounce boy, was bornat 3s30 a.m. on JM,ayJLltb. Both Joyce and Steve came home two days laterand are doing fine. Steve's birth cost twice as much as Sandi's, butthanks to the generous gifts of many j)f you, we were able to meet the cost.

Joyce's mother. Mrs. Wymore. came on May 17th to be with usfor two weeks. We've enjoyed her company$ and since she is our forwarding agent, she appreciated the chance to see ydiat we're doinghere.

Carl and Carolyn Palmer, minister of missions at Los GatosChristian Church will also be here at the end of May to visit us andWayfull and Helen Jew.

We. praise God for our record attendance last week: 42 inin Sunday School and 9 in worship. But, please keep praying that somemight accept salvation.

Chinese in our area have been very busy this month worshippingthe Queen of Heaven or the "Great Mother." The Queen of Heaven is undoubtedly the most important diety the average Chinese here. She isparticularly important to fishermen and farmers because she is supposeto bring good harvests. The festivities include colorful parades intraditional dress, dragon dances, lion dances, feasts, sacrifices, offerings to the temples and the great Chinese operas. All surroundingvillages and prominent local citiaens are involved. It's an excitingcircus atmosphere. The dedicated worship of this goddess may be thelargest single obstacle to people being saved in this area. P easepray that God might begin opening their eyes.
